Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. Disney held an inventory conference this week and we got some news on upcoming movies and maybe some new Figment content. The 90s was a wild time for Disney parks. Michael Eisner was in the midst of his Disney Decade expansion plans to add new parks and attractions all over the world. Plus Disney World was starting to become the vacation destination we know today. But it wasn't smooth sailing the entire time. Euro Disney opened in the early part of the decade over budget and to underwhelming crowds. The weak launch of the new parks put a major financial strain on the company that impacted a lot of Eisner's grand plans. Today we count down the top parks, attractions and lands whose cancellations can be tied back to the financial struggles of Euro Disney. Submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode. Disney fans, what does The Disney Decade mean to you? To some, it brings back memories of a time when The Walt Disney Company had extraordinary growth during a ten-year period. To others, it's a time when promises were made that didn't come to fruition. Although that fact is true in some cases, it's undeniable that The Disney Decade brought lots of new and iconic content to the Disney Parks. But it didn't end there. The Disney Decade branched out, creating divisions of The Walt Disney Company that are now as iconic as the parks including Disney Vacation Club, Disney Cruise Line, and more. There were some misses along the way and some obstacles not allowing for all of The Disney Decade dreams to come true, but one thing is for certain. The Walt Disney Company would look very different if it weren't for a lot of risks taken during The Disney Decade. Listen as we discuss. This year the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are playing their 55th season down the road from Disneyland. Adam explores the relationship between America’s pastime and America’s favorite theme park. SUPPORT THE SHOW ON PATREON - OUR SOURCES Three Heavy Hitters Roles in the Disney-Angels Tale, LA Times, May 1995 Angels-Disneyland Doubleheader on YesterlandA History of the Angels on Halos Heaven - ADAM'S SCRIPT Sunday, October 27, 2002. 8 days before my 17th birthday. Edison International Field of Anaheim, one freeway exit south of Disneyland. I was watching this baseball game in Redlands, California, about a 45 minute drive away. The Anaheim Angels, my favorite baseball team, played the San Francisco Giants in the 7th and final game of the World Series. Taking a 4-1 lead into the 9th inning, closer Troy Percival had runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Just one pitch away from turning the Angels into World Champions for the first time in their 41 year history. Center fielder Kenny Lofton stepped to the plate representing the tying run. Lofton’s favorite pitch was low and inside. If Percival made a mistake low and in...this could suddenly be a tie game. Luckily for my adolescent psyche...that didn’t happen. If you’re a professional sports fan, and you were lucky enough to see your team win the championship during your formative years, you know the emotions I was experiencing that night. I honestly couldn’t remember a time in my life when I’d felt happier. Jump ahead a couple months. A few of my cousins were visiting from Ohio to spend New Year’s with me, my brother, and my parents. Like anyone visiting California, naturally, my cousins wanted to go to Disneyland, and we were happy to oblige. But before that happened, I needed to make a very important stop. A week earlier, on Christmas morning, one of my presents was actually a raincheck. A promise from my parents that when we were in Anaheim, we’d pay a visit to the Angels team store and they’d buy me a bright red, Angels World Champion windbreaker, the very same jacket worn by the players and coaches. That jacket brought back all those same emotions from that night in October. And it bears mentioning, even though it was December, we’re talking about Southern California. It was in the high 60s that day! Definitely not heavy jacket weather. But you better believe that jacket never left my torso that day. I still have that jacket. It doesn’t get a whole lot of use these days. It still fits, but it’s a bit more snug around the midsection than when I was in high school. A year ago, on this channel, we released an episode called “The Heart and Soul of Brooklyn”. In that episode, I told a story about a group of young boys living in Brooklyn in the summer of 1955, visiting first Coney Island and then Ebbets Field. In the process of creating and hosting that story, I realized that the world of baseball and the world of theme parks often run side-by-side and have a lot of similar elements. They’re both fun, they’re both great family outings, and maybe I’m getting overly sentimental here, but they both have an element of adventure and...magic. It’s now been almost two decades since the Fall of 2002, and the Angels are beginning their 60th season. They haven’t returned to the World Series...they really haven’t even gotten close. Don’t get me started on that topic. It’s baseball season, and with Disneyland set to open in a few weeks, it’s also theme park season. Unlike last season, Disneyland and Angel Stadium will actually have visitors this year. Beyond geographic location, the two organizations, Disney and the Angels, share a lot of common ground. It’s April 1961. John F Kennedy, the first US President born in the 20th century, has been in the White House for about 100 days. Yuri Gagaran wins major bragging rights for the Soviet Union by becoming the first man in space. Fugitive Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichman is brought to trial in Jerusalem. And in Los Angeles, a new baseball team takes the field for their first ever home game. 1961 was a transformative year for the American pastime. Baseball is notoriously slow to change, and true to form, the same sixteen teams had existed for six decades. Some of them had relocated, most notably the Dodgers moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, and the Giants moving from New York City to San Francisco. But they were still the same ball clubs. Frustrated by the static nature of professional baseball, which if you’re unfamiliar is composed of the National and American Leagues, plans were drawn up for third league, the Continental League. They had their sights set on professional ball teams in Minneapolis, Toronto, Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta, a few of the many regions that baseball-loving Americans were moving to. Before the Continental League could take shape, Major League Baseball struck a deal. They would do something just short of sacrilegious. They would expand. The next two years would see the creation of the New York Mets, Houston Astros, Washington Senators...and the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels would play their first season just south of Downtown LA, at Wrigley Field. If you’re a baseball fan like me, the name of that park probably rings a bell. It shares a name with the Cubs longtime home park, on the north side of Chicago. And no, that’s not a coincidence. William Wrigley, the millionaire owner of the chewing gum company and the Chicago Cubs, built the park in the 1920s for two minor league teams. But in 1961, big league baseball moved in. The previous winter, several baseball executives descended on the baseball owners meetings in St Louis with the hope of putting in a successful bid for the new Los Angeles Angels. Gene Autry, better known as the Singing Cowboy, an established country crooner, radio personality, and movie star would purchase and own the Angels for the next 36 years. The Angels home opener that year was a disappointment, drawing just 12,000 fans, about 50% of the park’s capacity. That year, they averaged just 7,000 fans per game, one-third the total of the Dodgers, playing down the road at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Despite not drawing many fans, the Angels won 70 games that season. Not too shabby for a hodgepodge mix of out-of-shape veterans and career minor leaguers. But, for their whole tenure in Los Angeles, the Angels struggled to attract as much attention as their National League counterpart, they also struggled to fill the stands. This was especially disappointing from 1962 to 1965 when the Angels and Dodgers shared Dodger Stadium. It was time for the Angels to move out of Los Angeles and find their own identity. That’s where Anaheim came into the picture. In just seven short years, Anaheim went from a dusty citrus-growing town to the home of the most popular theme park on earth; Disneyland. In 1965, Anaheim got another major tourist attraction: The only American League baseball team in the state of California. While announcing the construction of the new Anaheim Stadium just four miles south of Disneyland, the team also announced a new name: The California Angels. If the team’s move to Disneyland’s backyard seems too perfect to be a coincidence, well...that hunch is correct. Walt Disney was a member of the Angels board of directors from 1960 until his death in 1966, and he was a central figure in the team’s move to Orange County. As fellow family-friendly Hollywood entertainers, Walt Disney and Gene Autry both saw the benefit of giving Americans another option for a family friendly outing. You could visit Anaheim and see Mickey Mantle and Mickey Mouse on the same weekend! 1966,the team’s first year in Anaheim, saw 1.4 million fans visit the ballpark, the highest attendance in the American League. In 67, to promote the opening of Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Carribean, Autry teamed up with the Disney company to offer Angels-Disneyland doubleheader. For $5, fans could buy a reserved seat at a game against the Cleveland Indians, and a special nighttime ticket to Disneyland, giving them access to the park from 8 at night to 1 in the morning. Just as Disney began to experience some of their worst years, the Angels entered some of their best. They acquired Nolan Ryan, one of the best pitchers in the history of the game, and would go on to win their division in 1979, 1982, and 1986. Disneyland and the Angels remained friendly neighbors, but for the most part, separate and unrelated entities throughout the 70s and 80s. But that began to change in the early 1990s. In the middle of the 1994 season, just as the Disney Decade was gaining steam, the studio released Angels in the Outfield, starring a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as well as Christopher Lloyd, Best known previously as Doc Brown from the Back to the Future franchise. Lloyd plays Al, who leads a team of Angels on a mission of divine intervention to help the team win the pennant. It’s cheesy. It’s sappy. It’s all the things Disney gets accused of on a daily basis, but it still gives me the warm fuzzies. Disney’s new CEO Michael Eisner had an interest in sports that went beyond the silver screen. After purchasing and debuting the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim the previous year, Eisner now had his sights set on the Angels. By this point, Gene Autry was in his 80s and in failing health, having handed over day-to-day operations to his wife Jackie. She agreed to sell 25% of the team to Disney in 1994. After Gene Autry passed away four years later, Disney bought the team outright for just over $100 million. During the years of Disney ownership, the team changed their name for the second time, from the California Angels to the Anaheim Angels. With some financial assistance from the city of Anaheim, the team also gave the stadium a much-overdue makeover. Early in their ownership, Disney made a big blunder. The company re-designed the team’s uniforms. Beginning in the 1997 season, the Angels played in blue and white pinstripes, with a logo that looked like it was straight out of Toontown. Many fans compared it to something an adult softball team would wear. In 2002, the team did away with their five-year mistake and took the field in classic red and white uniforms. The uniforms didn’t help pre-season predictions for the team, as most oddsmakers expected them to place third in their four team division. When the Angels finished the first 20 games of the season with a 6 and 14 record, even those projections seemed optimistic. But they turned it around. Not unlike the original 1961 Angels, the 02 (oh two) team was scrappy. A collection of veterans and newcomers, without a lot of household names. They’d go on to surprise nearly everyone by ending the season with 99 wins. In early November, they celebrated their world championship with...what else? A parade down Main Street USA. Though Disney sold the team in 2003, the relationship between the two hasn’t ended. Most notably, when Angel Stadium hosted the MLB All-Star Game in 2010, Disney created 36 baseball-themed Mickey Mouse statues and placed them throughout the Disneyland Resort. I’ve always loved the fact that my favorite baseball team plays down the road from my favorite theme park. When two things you love, and that you’re passionate about, intersect like that, it gives you all the warm fuzzies. I love food, too, and I get that same overwhelmingly happy feeling when I sit down and have a really good meal at Carthay Circle at Disney California Adventure, or Blue Bayou at Disneyland Wherever you’re surrounded by people who love all the same things you do, those are the really good moments in life. Maybe we used to take those places and experiences for granted a little bit. But I have a feeling, after 2020, we’re never going to do that again. Whether it’s a baseball game, a football game, a trip to a theme park, a family BBQ...whatever part of your life that features your favorite things and your favorite people, I hope you get to a whole lot more of it this year. To the Angels, happy 60th season. Play Ball!
Welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, your place for anything and everything Disney. This week we finish (for now) our series Disney Decade with 2010-2019. But before we get into that, let’s get to the news! Food and Wine starts early this year, going from July all the way to November. The cast for Obi-Wan Kenobi was announced and includes has some awesome names attached to it like Kumail Nanjiani, Sung Kang, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Also, the new Bamboo Bar and Patio opened at Splitsville in Disney Springs. This decade was definitely one of the most prosperous in Disney’s history. Bob Iger led Disney through some massive acquisitions of Lucasfilm and Fox. Marvel explodes at the box office, which then seems to feed into all Disney properties owning the box office by the end of the decade. Many of the parks also go through massive improvements and new a new park even opens! If this was the 2020s, we could’ve called this the Roaring ‘20s. The Roaring 10s doesn’t have quite the same flare. Oh well. Thanks for tuning in. Share this podcast with your friends, relatives, and that person at work that you struggle to talk to. And as always, have a magical week! Check us out on Facebook and Youtube or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode or support us on Patreon.

Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, your one-stop-shop for anything and everything Disney. This week in Disney news, Disney’s officially getting rid of Extra Magic Hours. Instead, they’ll be opening the parks up 30 minutes early if you’re staying on property. Also, The Festival of the Lion King is coming back to the Animal Kingdom, which bodes well for live entertainment coming back to the parks. Despite the announcement, we’re yet to receive a start date for the return of the king. Lastly, all five seasons of The Muppet Show have arrived on Disney+. This week, we’re resuming the Disney Decade series with the 2000s. Like many of the decades we’ve covered so far, this one is filled with its share of struggle, growth, strife, and success. However, this decade also comes with a hefty spoonful of acquisitions. Disney struggles after the Renaissance of animation ends and the slowdown in tourism caused by 9/11. Fighting in the boardroom ends in the CEO resigning and the rise of a new CEO. Disney acquires Fox Family, Pixar, and Marvel in what turns out to be fantastic deals for them. They fail, however, to acquire Universal Studios, which we think is ultimately a good thing. Amid the many forgettable movies that were produced, Stitch rises to the top and has proven to be a king for them. Also, live action movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure flourish. Listen in to hear more about this very important decade. Thank you as always for supporting us. Michelle shares her signature excellent research as she leads us through the period's twists and turns that led us to the company we know today.Once we wrap up our look at Disney In The 2000s - A Decade Of Turnaround, it's time for the Disney Stories of the Week. This episode, those include the possibility of a big name from the Star Wars Universe who may be about to join the MCU. We also discuss the important step taken this week that gets Disney Cruise Line closer to sailing again. As always, we wrap it all up with tips that might help you on your next vacation. Thanks for listening! Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, your favorite place to hear a guy named Joe and a lady named Angela talk about Disney until they’re as blue in the face as Stitch (which, to be clear, is a desired look). Ugh…Disney News this week is a bummer. Disney laid off 28,000 Cast Members due to the pandemic. If you’d like to help out the impacted Cast Members, consider donating to the Cast Member Pantry or local food banks in Orlando and Southern California. Also, in more bleh news, D23 has been postponed until 2022. The upside though is they’ll announce some of their 100th Anniversary festivities. It’s hard to introduce the topic this week after that, but this week we continue a fan favorite series, Disney Decade. This go round we’re delving into the 1990s. The ‘90s is maybe one of Disney’s best decades to date. The Disney Renaissance happened, there are massive park expansions and new parks built, great TV shows are made, sooooo many hotels come to fruition, and Disney acquires a major TV network. Thank you so much as always for listening! We hope you have a magical week! This episode of the Progress City Town Hall features our interview with themed entertainment veteran and former Imagineer Bob Baranick. Bob takes us from his days before Disney working on regional attractions such as the Six Flags Power Plant through his time as a model builder for Disneyland Paris's Phantom Manor and beyond. You'll hear tales of his stint as an art director at Disneyland, including many unbuilt attractions from the "Disney Decade" as well as legendary experiences such as the Indiana Jones Adventure. Memories and insights from an industry pro - it's the Progress City Radio Hour!
In honor of the passing of Judson Green this week, we look not just at his contribution to the Walt Disney Company, but the standard of leadership ideals he sought to put in place. An accomplished jazz musician and composer, he knew as more about the "show" in show business than most any Disney executive. He led an organization to accomplish great things in building out the Disney Decade in the parks world-wide as president and chairman of Walt Disney Attractions. We look at his perspectives around performance excellence and his legacy. And we learn why his advent and departure was what I believe the best and worst decision Michael Eisner ever made.
This week in Disney News, Animal Kingdom announces a new baby mandrill born on July 25, and Angela gets weirdly emotional about it. National Geographic will be releasing a new show detailing the behind the scenes activities at Animal Kingdom this fall. Surprisingly, with new movies still on hold, Pixar announces a new movie, Luca, set to come out summer 2021. Finally, the latest rumor is that Disney’s looking to replace The Hall of Presidents with something a little more long-lasting (aka doesn’t need updating every 4-8 years). And for our main topic, we continue our long-running Disney Decade series by heading back to the 1980s. The 1980s was an interesting and important inflection point for the Walt Disney Company. Between building a new theme park and Board Room shakeups, Disney almost didn’t make it out of the decade as an independent company. But out of this struggle rose an even stronger company with the end of the decade bringing about the beginning of the Disney Renaissance. This week, we discuss the happiest ship to never sail the Seven Seas. Once upon a time, there was a Golden Era known as the Disney Decade. It was a time of growth and expansion for the Walt Disney Company. But not every idea that was dreamed up came to fruition. Before there was a Disney Cruise line and before there was Castaway Cay, there was an idea for a ship like no other. It would have been a floating theme park, bringing the magic of Disney to unreached countries around the globe. Join us as we talk about the fateful tale of the S.S. Disney.
This week we take a look back at what kicked off the Disney Decade and before we start talking about a red headed mermaid with fishy friends, we need to take a look at a little orange cat.
Hello and welcome to the Enchanted Ears Podcast, where we discuss anything and everything Disney. This week in Disney News, Disney's Head of Streaming leaves for a social media giant and other management shuffles around. Also, there's a rumor circulating that an animated Kingdom Hearts series is being developed for Disney+. We're definitely interested to see what happens and will tune in if this is real! This week we discuss the tumultuous 1970s. After the death of Walt in 1966, the company suffers yet another devastating loss when Roy passes. The company struggles to find its direction, but still manages to produce some really awesome movies and have some other great successes. Thank you so much for listening. In this groovy episode of Enchanted Ears Podcast, we talk about Disney during the 1960s. But first, there was quite a bit of news last week. In a fantastic turn of events, we finally get to talk about Hamilton the Musical as a Disney property!!! Yep...Disney paid $75 mil to own the filmed version of the original cast’s performance on Broadway, which they’ll make back in 1 night. Disney announced the release dates for several of their most highly-anticipated shows including The Mandalorian season 2, Wandavision, and more. Also, you’ll be able to start booking your fully-immersive Star Wars experience at the Galactic Starcruiser hotel later this year, so start saving your money now!!! Finally, someone is rumored to be in talks to direct the new Star Wars films and let’s just say we called it. This week, we continue our Disney Decades series with the 1960s. So much happens in this decade it’s hard to fit it all in (and we certainly missed a lot). During this decade we see the inception of a lot of iconic Disney classic movies, the creation of a new animation process, park ride innovations that blew people’s minds, new parks and parks that never were, and, of course, the death of Walt Disney. This decade brings about a lot of changes that forever impact the trajectory of the Disney company. Don’t miss out! This week, we're celebrating our upcoming visit to "The Happiest Place on Earth" for Disneyland After Dark: '80s Nite by looking back at everything Disney in the '80s. Michael Eisner proclaimed it "The Disney Decade" but some consider it a dark time for the Walt Disney Company. So, which one is it? We'll discuss many of the things that happened during that period and give our conclusions as to how we should look back at this interesting time in Disney history. Once we wrap up our look at Disney in the '80s, it's time for the Disney Stories of the Week. This episode, we shared a new way to plan ahead for your chance to pilot "The Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy" at the Walt Disney World Resort. We also discussed more ways to experience Star Wars on your next Disney Cruise. As well as a new Pixar short film that will delve into what happened to Bo Peep during her time away from the rest of the Toy Story gang. As always, we wrap it all up with tips that might help you on your next vacation. Thanks for listening! Cheers

It's fondly looked back upon as one of the greatest decades in the company's history since the passing of Walt Disney. The last decade, however, gives it a run for its money! This week we'll talk all about the Last Disney Decade! In the last decade the Walt Disney Company has seen amazing growth all across the board. We do our best to sum up what's happened in WDW this week!

We are back with our final episode of 2019, where we instead flip the focus on upcoming 2020. For housekeeping, we have a small update to our April trip, and give a spoiler-free review of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Our news items for 2020 include a potential FastPass Upcharge system to be rolled out alongside Disney's trip planning application, some of the movies and shows coming to screens this year, and information regarding the Avenger's Campus which is set to open this summer in Disney California Adventure. Our final 2019 show comes to a close with a discussion that focuses on some of our New Year's "resolutions" (strictly Disney-related)! Finally: we would be remiss if we didn't take a moment to reflect on our year, and how far we've come in so short a time, and say THANK YOU to all the friends and family who have supported us on this endeavor! Your encouragement is always appreciated. Here's to a great year, and another on the horizon. Happy New Year, everyone! Michael Eisner referred to the '90s as the Disney Decade. To us, it feels like the '10s have been yet another Disney Decade, with Disney properties dominating pop culture like never before. This week, in Disney News, Kevin Feige is moving on over to Star Wars! He’ll be helping produce a new movie with LucasFilm’s Kathleen Kennedy and we’re really excited to see what he brings to the table. Spider-Man’s back!!! Sony and Disney finally reach that agreement we’ve been hoping for. Also, the dates for EPCOT’s Flower and Garden Festival were announced and this year, there’s going to be a Remyiary!! This week we pick up on our Disney Decades series with the 1950s. This decade is driven by some huge developments in movies, TV, and parks. Some Disney heavy-hitters came out in the 50s including Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Sleeping Beauty. Also, Walt continues to prove he’s a visionary when he jumps head-first into the newest technology TV and is handsomely rewarded in being able to help fund his newest idea of a theme park. Then in 1955, Disneyland opens to huge crowds (thanks to thousands of counterfeit tickets) and changes the world as we know it! Thanks for lending us your ears! This week, on our series Disney Decades, we jump right into the most interesting and tumultuous decade yet: the 1940s. The Disney Company is struggling to stay on top with the high cost of animation and the declining foreign market due to World War II. After the smashing success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, films like Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi don’t quite generate the money that it cost to fund them. Walt feels attacked when his “family” tries to unionize, causing him to fire one of his most valued animators. Also, the U.S. government seizes part of the Disney Studio to house troops after the Pearl Harbor attack. Disney makes propaganda and morale boosting films during this time. Personally, Walt can’t catch a break either. His father dies while he’s away in South America. Despite the hardships Walt and his company face, Disney continues to receive recognition for the innovative nature of his films. Of these, the most notable is the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the Oscars. This award is only given on occasion to people who demonstrate consistently high quality in film making. Walt also finds himself embroiled in a bit of controversy after releasing Song of the South, the only movie in the Disney vault to never be released. Trains become a main focal point in Walt’s life after going to a train show. More importantly, the seed for a theme park is planted. The decade wraps up on a high note. The Disney Company wins yet another Oscar, this time for a nature documentary. Thanks as always for lending us your ears. We wouldn’t have a podcast without wonderful listeners like you! You know where to find us if you’d like to reach us on Facebook or Instagram. Have a magical week! Check us out on Facebook or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode.
In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, the Disney Decade was in full swing, and part of it was advertising what’s new at Walt Disney World Resort. Disney parks was no stranger to “live” events from the parks. The Happy Easter Parade, Christmas Day Parade, and yes, The 4th of July Spectacular. While Disney has “live streamed” some recent 4th of July performances, it just doesn’t quite feel like the anticipation of waiting to watch the “live” fireworks on July 3rd in the 1980s. The special, like the Christmas and Easter Parades, evolved over the years; and in 1989, America’s 213th Birthday the focus was on Disney recording artists and the newly opened MGM Studios theme park. The Spectacular kicks off at Washington Square, New York, New York, or in this case, at Walt Disney World MGM Studios. Remember the Studios had just opened just two months earlier on May 1st, 1989 – New Kids on the Block are at Pleasure Island along with the Mannequin Dancers. Mickey Mouse Club Members are at the new Typhoon Lagoon Water Park; boy that footage looks familiar, almost like I’ve seen it before. Carol Channing is at Cinderella’s Castle; Jane Frisk, at the Theater of the Stars, and The Temptations in front of Oscars Service Station at MGM Studios. Disneyland has just opened the new Splash Mountain while Willard Scott and Gretchen Carlson, Miss America, host the All-American Parade at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom along with the Main Street Electrical Parade, and Sandi Patty closing out the Spectacular during the “live” fireworks performance. Happy 213th Birthday, America!!

In this week’s brief Disney News, there’s a rumored second park in the Shanghai Disney location…and even better, Bob Iger has hinted that it could be a whole park dedicated to Marvel!! For the rest of the episode…. Welcome to the Roaring 30s…for Disney at least. While everyone was suffering through the Great Depression, Disney doubled down and worked hard to stay afloat and to continue innovating. This decade sees the advent of three-strip Technicolor that was used for the “Silly Symphonies” and eventually the multiplane camera that Disney used to film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Many important characters emerge including Goofy, Donald, and the whole Duck crew. But mostly everything in this decade centers around the iconic film that started a revolution in film making and had an Oscar created just for it: Snow White. The film certainly wasn’t easy to make and Walt wanted perfection, but the gamble totally paid off with the highest grossing film to that date. Joe and Angela also come up with a fantastic *cough cough terrible*retirement plan of going around to garage sales and trying to find old Disney artifacts like two knuckle-headed Indiana Joneses. Check us out on Facebook or submit a question/topic for us to discuss on a future episode.

Disneyland's Star Wars Galaxy's Edge opens in a matter of weeks and we couldn't be more stoked! May The Fourth has always been fun to talk about, but come the last day of May, history shall be made. A land that has taken years, if not DECADES, to conspire now takes up a good chunk (14 acres) of the Northwest portion of Disneyland Park in California, USA. The Droid Depot will get your nuts, bolts and gyroscopes adjusted and may send you on your way with a brand new toaster-sized robotic friend. Don't forget to say "hi" to BB8 for us! If you're into the eats - Oga's Cantina, Ronto Roasters, the Milk Stand and Docking Bay 7 will square you away with meats, cheeses and that Blue Banta Milk that is truly out-of-this-world! If you don't mind a few popcorn kernels stuck in your teeth, pay Kat Saka's Kettle a visit for the sweetest, most savory treat in the System! But Wait! You can't parade around Black Spire Outpost in those blue jeans. Nope, not that Off-White hoodie, either. Supreme fanny-pack? Toss it. Once you've made the call on whether you are Dark Side/Light Side, you're going to need to look the part. Zip in to First Order Cargo and proclaim your allegiance. Foolish enough to go with the light side? Then Resistance Supply will certainly square you away with a finely tailored Tomb Raider looking getup, complete with an artisan leather thermal detonator satchel! Alrighty, your 4-hours at Black Spire Outpost are coming to an end... BOOM!!! Millennium Falcon's don't just fly themselves! get over to Sugglers Run and do the most good! Fully functional and responsive controls surround you as you careen through galaxies once only seen in the movies. Well, the movies and Star Tours. If you can hang in there, towards the end of the year you JUST MAY be able to rise up against the resistance in... well, Rise of the Resistance! Here you'll battle the First Order in a visually captivating, heart-pounding environment. Sadly, innovation and technology still need to catch up with Disney Imagineers' ideas - hopefully sooner rather than later. If none of that sounds interesting enough to give this podcast a listen - then maybe a little Bob Iger Vs. Abigail Disney in the Twitter ring will! Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger pulled $66,000,000 this past year. Abby doesn't think he deserves it - and while she is probably right, Disney as a company defends Bob's take-home pay by stating that it is "90-percent performance based." Iger's impressive Disney Decade has brought our $24 per-share holdings out of the red and into the $125 range, sure, but when the going got tough, didn't he stop working out? No, he didn't. He still cranks out 4am cardio sessions on the VersaClimber. Haven't been on one? Try it and see if you can walk the next day. Don't forget to leave a comment - good, bad, or ugly - we'll take em all! Photo Credit: LUCASFILM/WALT DISNEY PICTURES
This week we begin our Disney Decades series with the Roaring 20s, a time when people spent out the wazoo and men had never heard of hair gel or used tar to tame their crazy locks (unsuccessfully). #alternativefacts During this time, Walt Disney experiences difficulty between bankruptcy and “Bad Blood” Taylor Swift/Katy Perry-level fights, reminding us all that failure paves the road to success. (That is unless your failure is the failure to do a good Mickey Mouse or Goofy impression. In that case, give up, you’re scaring the kids.) We keep the singing to a minimum again this week, but struggle to not make a Hamilton reference every five minutes. But it is true, all conflicts should be settled by rap battles. In other news, we had so much Disney news this week that it’s hard to remember it all. We hope you enjoy learning about early Disney as much as we did. Thank you for downloading the Thirty20Eight, a show about Disney history, Disney listory, and news. This week, we look at the Disney Decade of the 90s and the explosion of Disney Stores around the world. Enjoy!
Back in Episode #91, I covered the 1988 Walt Disney World 4th of July Spectacular and Episode #101 was the 1987 Christmas Day Parade both a the beginning of the “Disney Decade”, the period of time starting in the late 1980’s into the 1990’s. Michael Eisner was CEO, and Michael leveraged a formula that Walt himself had perfected: leverage television to promote Disney Parks. Not the same way it’s done today, but in a “let’s show the audience why they should come to the parks” sort of way. Something that the company has gotten away from recently. Have you noticed the recent televised Christmas celebrations aren’t really parades at all, but a showcase of Disney recording artists performing in front of park icons? That’s a story for another blog. By the mid-1990’s, the cadence had been set; audiences, especially youngsters, could expect an Easter Day parade, 4th of July fireworks and Christmas Day parade all “live” from Walt Disney World. Live, in quotes of course; but as one of those youngsters and before social media, it sure looked live to me. Originally airing March 30th, 1997, the 97 version of the Easter Day parade featured a Cinderella Castle cake… no, not a Cake Boss cake, but Cinderella Castle with a makeover turning it into a 25th Anniversary cake. With Walt Disney World in preparation for the 50th Anniversary just a few years away, I thought this episode of SamsDisneyDiary would be a great time to look back at the 1997 Happy Easter Parade and all the exciting new attractions ready for Walt Disney World’s 25th Anniversary. Hosted by Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel from “Boy Meets World”, and J.D. Roth from Walt Disney World Inside-Out, join all your Disney friends for television’s biggest Easter celebration. Plus, get an inside look at Walt Disney World’s exciting new attractions, Disney Wide World of Sports, Test Track, Remember the Magic 25th Anniversary Parade, Some interesting things I noticed: The parade kicks off with a “backstage” look at the parade preparations, complete with Mary Poppins and Peter Pan flying in, just in time. The parade kicks off with the Gateway High School Marching Band all the way from Monroeville, PA (Just outside of Pittsburgh) with traditional Easter music. Disney characters and dancers continue the parade with “Here Comes Peter Cottontail” and “The Hop”. A segment on the new Community of Celebration, Florida includes an interview with Roy Disney: “Celebration is really Epcot I think… in the sense of what Walt was looking for… a place where real people come to, to live real lives, and have the advantages of modern technology and all the things industry can bring us while adding value at the same time.” Interesting to hear from Roy and some of the residents; of course, Celebration is alive and well today. A parade segment with Pluto and his baseball themed band, playing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” – A perfect segue to a segment on the brand-new Disney Wide World of Sports complex. J.D. Roth gives us a quick tour of the facility; something for every athlete with “big time” competitions in over 30 sports. The field house holds 6 basketball courts and is the new training home for the Harlem Globetrotters. The facility is set to open in May 1997, and the crown jewel of the facility, the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves. Mickey and all his friends are returning to the Magic Kingdom to celebrate the 25th Anniversary. We get a sneak peek of the new 25th Anniversary Walt Disney World parade, new at the Magic Kingdom, “Remember the Magic”. J.D. Roth invites a few lucky guests watching the parade at the Magic Kingdom to take a special preview of the fastest attraction at Walt Disney World, the new Test Track. The first live proving ground open to the public. Keep in mind, Test Track isn’t open yet and won’t open for another 2 years (April 1999), though the segment suggests that it will be opening this fall 1997. J.D. spent some time with an Imagineer in the “Visitor Center”, or the queue as most people would call it, getting some details on exactly what Test Track is, before taking a ride on the newest attraction at Walt Disney World. Other interesting notes and observations: The Castle Cake looms in the background of the Main Street USA parade shots. The parade features lots of Easter floats, costumes and characters, none of which I have ever seen during a parade at Walt Disney World, Easter or not. The Country Hoe Down includes characters from the Country Bear Jamboree, including some parade floats still used today. A small segment of the show is a tribute to Bub Thomas, an original member of the Main Street Barbershop Quartet – the quartet dedicates their performance to his memory, singing on a barbershop parade float. The Disney Magic, the first ship of the new Disney Cruise Line is under construction. We get to see some early concept art, and a construction video shows the bow being installed in Italy. We also get to see images of Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. It sure looks like the island, but there is no construction or sign of anything that is to come. While it’s mentioned in the show that the Magic would set sail next March (1998), the Magic first sets sail on August 15, 1999. In an interesting segment, the parade hosts “race” to set the table during the parade with help from Lumiere and “Be Our Guest”. The Test Track segment is amazing. We get to ride almost two years before the attraction is open to the public; very interesting to see the theming that isn’t in the building – and the creative camera work, including the loading area. The Swan and Dolphin get some love during the closing credits.
As the 20th century drew to a close, Disney was reflecting on a roller coaster of a decade. Throughout the 90s, every division had experienced both dizzying highs and discouraging lows. The theme parks started the 90s in a rut when Disneyland Paris flopped, but regained its footing when Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom proved a big hit. On the other hand, the animated feature division struck gold early in the decade when Beauty and the Beast, became the first ever animated feature nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, but hit a major rough patch in the mid 90s when controversial powerhouse Jeffrey Katzenberg was fired, and his new studio declared war on his former employer. By the time Tarzan was released in the summer of 1999, Michael Eisner had been the public face of the company for more than ten years. That was true when he worked in partnership with Frank Wells, when he ran the company solo after Wells’ death in 1994, and it would continue to be the case moving into the new millenium, when former ABC President Bob Iger was appointed COO. For better or worse, the buck stopped with Eisner. Tarzan was a big hit, and the parks division was on a hot streak. As the 21st century dawned, Disney was optimistic that Eisner and Iger could continue creating magic together, riding the success they’d had throughout...the Disney Decade. The 1990s were supposed to start with a big bang, but three big hurdles would soon fall into Disney’s path, and would significantly change what was actually built at Walt Disney World. In fact, these hurdles would change the entire landscape of the company at the very beginning of the Disney Decade. In our concluding look at The Disney Decade, we'll look at the "after" part - after the 90s. Eisner's reign as CEO has a messy end, and Bob Iger must take over a brand once again in need of repair. What is the legacy of the Disney Decade?
This week, we head back in time once more, to the Disney Decade. The 1990s represented a renaissance for the Disney Company, both in the studios and in the theme parks. A decade that began with promise and great ambition would see a lot of success and victories, but also carried its share of tragedies and failures.
This week, we'll take a first poke at the Disney Decade... by only talking about the decade before it! Did you know that Disney was almost bought up and sold for parts? Have a listen!
