The latter, a brutal knock-down, drag-out fight with clinical depression, led David to a suicide attempt. Thanks to the support of many people and being shown the necessity of putting one's self-care on a pedestal, David continues the essential yet challenging journey from the isolation of mental “hellness” to the inclusive space of mental wellness. His life having been saved, David is committed to moving the conversation about suicide, male sexual trauma, and mental illness from the dark shadows where they now live to the forefront of public concern. In doing so, his mission is to shine a bright light on the crisis we now face and open doors to the possibility of mental health for everyone, everywhere. Currently, David is a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the International Association for Youth Mental Health, the National Storytelling Network's Healing Story Alliance, and Active Minds. Student Well-Being: Why Mental Health Must Come First[00:02:22]Student well-being and strong mental health are essential for effective learning. This episode explores the growing mental health challenges faced by K-12 and college students globally. Rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues have surged, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent research from the U.S. Surgeon General notes a rise in mental health struggles among youth, including major depressive episodes and suicidal thoughts, compounded by increased screen time and social media use. In higher education, nearly 40% of students report conditions like anxiety or depression. [00:07:00]We discuss key contributing factors to the student mental health crisis, including excessive academic pressure, economic uncertainty, political and environmental anxiety, and disrupted sleep patterns. Social media plays a significant role, as students grapple with the pressure to maintain curated online personas.[00:15:45]Our conversation also highlights helpful resources and organizations working to address these issues, such as HundreED's Wellbeing in Schools project, Active Minds, and the Trevor Project. These organizations focus on integrating mental health support into education, providing vital resources, and advocating for policy change to improve student well-being.[00:20:15]]In the classroom, we explore trauma-informed teaching practices, mindfulness, peer support networks, and compassionate grading policies. Educators are finding new ways to balance preparing students for a tough world while creating a nurturing, supportive environment. JoJo Siwa: From Dance Prodigy to Pop Sensation and Business Mogul Joelle Joanie Siwa, better known by her stage name JoJo Siwa, is an American entertainment powerhouse who has captivated audiences of all ages with her incredible talent, infectious energy, and entrepreneurial spirit. Born on May 19, 2003, in Omaha, Nebraska, JoJo's journey began on dance competition shows, but her signature style and relentless drive have propelled her into a multi-faceted career that spans music, television, fashion, and business. Early Life and Dance Beginnings (2003-2015): JoJo's love for dance blossomed at a young age, nurtured by her mother, Jessalynn Siwa, a professional dance instructor. From the moment she could walk, JoJo was drawn to the rhythm and movement of dance. At just two years old, she began taking dance classes at her mother's studio, developing her skills in various styles, including jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary. As JoJo grew older, her passion for dance only intensified. At the age of five, she started competing in regional dance competitions, showcasing her natural talent and charisma on stage. JoJo's dedication and hard work paid off, as she consistently placed in the top ranks and caught the attention of industry professionals. Reality TV Stardom and Building a Fanbase (2015-2016): In 2015, JoJo's life took a dramatic turn when she auditioned for the second season of Lifetime's reality show, "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition." The show, hosted by the notorious Abby Lee Miller, pitted young dancers against each other in a fierce competition for a coveted scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School and a cash prize. JoJo, then 11 years old, entered the competition with her signature blonde ponytail, sparkling personality, and unwavering confidence. Alongside her mother, who served as her biggest cheerleader and support system, JoJo quickly became a fan favorite. Her larger-than-life personality, combined with her impressive dance skills, set her apart from the other contestants. Despite not winning the ultimate prize, JoJo emerged as the breakout star of the season. Her infectious energy, positive attitude, and memorable catchphrases ("Hold the Drama!" and "Live to Dance, Dance to Live!") resonated with viewers of all ages. JoJo's time on the show not only showcased her talent but also highlighted her ability to connect with audiences and build a loyal fanbase. Nickelodeon, Music Career, and the Rise of the JoJo Brand (2016-2021): Following her success on "Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition," JoJo caught the attention of Nickelodeon executives. In 2016, at the age of 13, she signed a talent deal with the network, marking the beginning of her meteoric rise to stardom. JoJo quickly became a fixture on Nickelodeon, appearing in various shows and specials, including "Lip Sync Battle Shorties" and "Nickelodeon's Sizzling Summer Camp Special." Her bubbly personality and unique fashion sense, characterized by her signature oversized hair bows and colorful outfits, made her instantly recognizable and beloved by young viewers. Capitalizing on her growing popularity, JoJo ventured into the music industry. In 2016, she released her debut single, "Boomerang," an upbeat pop anthem with a powerful anti-bullying message. The song and its accompanying music video, which featured JoJo's signature dance moves and colorful style, quickly went viral, amassing millions of views on YouTube. JoJo continued to release a string of successful singles, including "Kid in a Candy Store," "Hold the Drama," and "High Top Shoes." Her music resonated with young audiences, who were drawn to her positive lyrics, catchy melodies, and energetic performances. JoJo's music videos, often featuring elaborate dance routines and vibrant visuals, became a staple on Nickelodeon and YouTube, garnering billions of views worldwide. But JoJo's ambitions extended far beyond music and television. With a keen eye for business and a deep understanding of her target audience, JoJo began to build a powerful brand around her name and image. In 2016, she launched her own line of hair bows, which quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The oversized, colorful bows, adorned with glitter and emblazoned with the JoJo Siwa logo, flew off the shelves, becoming must-have accessories for young girls across the country. The success of the JoJo Siwa bow line was just the beginning. JoJo expanded her merchandise empire to include a wide range of products, from clothing and accessories to room décor and toys. She collaborated with major retailers, such as Target and Walmart, to make her products accessible to fans everywhere. JoJo's merchandise line became a multi-million dollar business, cementing her status as a savvy entrepreneur and a powerful force in the world of children's entertainment. In addition to her music and merchandise ventures, JoJo continued to make waves on television. In 2017, she landed her own Nickelodeon special, "JoJo Siwa: My World," which gave fans an inside look at her life and career. She also starred in the hit Nickelodeon series "The JoJo & BowBow Show Show," a wacky and energetic variety show that showcased her comedic talents and love for all things fun and colorful. Coming of Age, Newfound Confidence, and Continued Success (2021-Present): As JoJo entered her late teens and early twenties, she began to embrace a more mature and authentic version of herself. In January 2021, JoJo made headlines when she came out as pansexual, sharing her truth with her millions of followers on social media. The announcement was met with an outpouring of love and support from fans and fellow celebrities alike. JoJo's decision to live her truth and embrace her identity was a powerful moment, not only for her personally but also for her young fanbase. As a role model to millions of children and teenagers, JoJo's openness and authenticity sent a message of acceptance and self-love, encouraging her followers to be true to themselves and celebrate their individuality. In the years since her coming out, JoJo has continued to use her platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity. She has partnered with organizations like GLAAD and The Trevor Project to raise awareness and support for the LGBTQ+ community, using her voice and influence to create positive change. On the music front, JoJo has continued to evolve and grow as an artist. In 2022, she released her fourth studio album, "Celebrate," which showcased a more mature sound and tackled themes of self-acceptance, love, and empowerment. The album was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard Kids Albums chart and garnering praise for its catchy hooks and uplifting messages. JoJo has also ventured into acting, starring in the Nickelodeon movie "The J Team" in 2021. The film, which JoJo also executive produced, follows a young girl who starts a dance school to rival her former dance coach. The movie was a hit with fans, showcasing JoJo's acting chops and her ability to bring her signature energy and positivity to the big screen. In May 2024, JoJo announced a partnership with the popular online fashion retailer SHEIN to create a new clothing line. The collaboration, which is set to launch in the fall of 2024, will feature a range of trendy and affordable clothing and accessories designed by JoJo herself. The partnership is a testament to JoJo's enduring popularity and her ability to connect with audiences of all ages. The SHEIN collaboration is just the latest in a long line of successful business ventures for JoJo. In addition to her music and merchandise empire, she has also launched a successful YouTube channel, which boasts over 12 million subscribers and features a mix of music videos, vlogs, and behind-the-scenes content. JoJo's social media presence is equally impressive, with over 30 million followers on Instagram and 40 million fans on TikTok. JoJo's entrepreneurial spirit and business savvy have made her one of the most successful and influential young stars in the entertainment industry. She has been featured on Forbes' "30 Under 30" list and has been named one of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People." Her net worth is estimated to be over $20 million, a testament to her hard work and dedication to her craft. Despite her incredible success, JoJo remains grounded and committed to using her platform for good. She is an active philanthropist, supporting various charities and causes that align with her values of inclusivity, empowerment, and self-love. In 2021, she launched the JoJo Siwa Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children and families in need. In recent years, JoJo has also become a vocal advocate for mental health awareness. She has been open about her own struggles with anxiety and has encouraged her fans to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. In 2023, she partnered with the mental health organization Active Minds to create a series of videos and resources for young people dealing with mental health challenges. JoJo Siwa's journey from dance prodigy to pop sensation and business mogul is a testament to her incredible talent, hard work, and entrepreneurial spirit. From her early days on dance competition shows to her current status as a multi-faceted entertainment powerhouse, JoJo has consistently pushed boundaries and defied expectations. But perhaps what sets JoJo apart is her unwavering commitment to being true to herself and using her platform to make a positive impact on the world. Whether she's releasing a new album, launching a new business venture, or advocating for important causes, JoJo approaches everything with her signature energy, positivity, and authenticity. Zane Landon, a mental health and disability advocate and founder of Positive Vibes magazine, actively promotes mental health awareness, wellness, and inclusion. Despite battling his own mental health, Zane showed up to the Mental Health Youth Action Forum in Washington, D.C., to advocate for youth mental health policies and confront the stigma surrounding mental illness, particularly the misconception that it leads to violent behavior. In this episode, he shares his journey with major depressive disorder, emphasizing the empowerment he found in diagnosis and connection with others, as well as the healing power of helping those in similar situations. Alongside these topics, Zane addresses his struggles with weight and overeating and the recognition of the complex relationship between mental health and eating habits. He stresses the importance of body positivity, self-acceptance, and maintaining health objectives.Reflecting on the universal impact of mental health, Zane discusses the importance of recognizing individual worth and the value everyone brings to the world. His narrative includes the profound effects of early life experiences, personal achievements, and investing in oneself. In light of COVID-19 and the loss of his mother, Zane expresses gratitude for her influence in his life and explores his belief in an afterlife and continued connections with those who have passed. The conversation also delves into processing grief. Zane emphasizes the need to change one's internal narrative. He candidly discusses his spiritual yearning and the lack of definitive answers in coping with the absence of loved ones. He finds solace in the hope that his mom is in a safe place or some form of afterlife, and he seeks to honor her memory by channeling his love and energy into positive actions, such as a newfound love of cooking (which his mom loved to do). Grateful for the ability to discuss grief, mental health, and suicide openly, Zane advocates for improved societal approaches to these issues and uses social media and his digital platform to promote accessibility and encourage positive change.RESOURCES:Positive Vibes MagazineNAMIActiveMindsThe Grief Recovery HandbookMental Health Youth Action ForumAfterCloudEpisode Sponsor: Magic Mind | Use the code "GRIEVINGVOICES" to receive 20% offCONNECT:Support the showThis episode is sponsored by Do Grief Differently™️, my twelve-week, one-on-one, in-person/online program for grievers who have suffered any type of loss to feel better. "Don't Be Afraid To Talk About Your Problems". Those were the words of the late Jack Nathan pictured here. A vital young man who wrestled with anxiety and depression who  passionately championed talking about mental illness to let others know they were not alone. His parents David and Bradi Nathan and his sister Drew are keeping his mission alive. David and Bradi joined me live on The Debbie Nigro Show said, "Jack left us suddenly and accidentally on 7/3/20 at the age of 19, due to fentanyl poisoning. He was a survivor of mental illness- not a victim."  Before passing, Jack had created “HappyJacksWorld” to raise awareness and fund access to mental health resources.  Happy Jack IS Jack Nathan. In his honor, his family is continuing his mission to continue supporting those who struggle with mental health. On Happy Jacks World website you'll find merchandise with the signature Happy Jack Logo you can purchase to show your support. 15% of each HJ sale is donated. Jack's parents want to be sure you know we can all make life better for kids like Jack and ask that we all help keep Jack's legacy and mission alive. I welcome the opportunity to help and share Jacks' message. I always welcome the opportunity to talk about mental health, a topic that was insanely taboo and 'hush hush' in the years I was growing up watching so many struggle.  To be human is to struggle but some struggle more than others. Thankfully we continue to become educated about the brain and how it works so we can undertstand how to better help others we care about and give them more hope and inspiration. Happy Jack Donations have been made to the following Foundations in Jack's memory and in their commitment to help all: Active Minds, Child Mind Institute, Born this Way Foundation, Runway of Dreams, Riley's Dance, JaneStrong, Lean on Me, Denver University, American Cancer Society and Release Recovery Foundation.

When teens and young adults struggle with their mental health they tend to isolate from friends and family. And when they are isolated they struggle with self esteem and shame. What teens and young adults and actually all of us need is conversation, connection and validation when we are struggling. Just knowing we are not alone makes us feel better and improves our mental health. Our guest today Lauren Cikara is the Director of K-12 Initiatives at Active Minds. Active Minds was founded at the University of Pennsylvania following the suicide of founder Alison Malmon's brother. At Penn, Alison looked for existing mental health groups that she could bring to campus to combat the stigma of mental illness, encourage students to seek help early, and prevent future tragedies. Finding none, she created her own student-to-student model and formed an organization known as Open Minds. In just a few years, Alison was fielding calls from all over the country from students and administrators wanting to do something on their own campuses, both at K-12 schools and universities. In 2003, the organization, now known as Active Minds, established a national office in Washington, DC and was incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization. Now in more than 1,000 campuses and communities, Active Minds directly reaches more than 1.9 million people each year through awareness campaigns, events, advocacy, outreach, and more. Active minds is about changing the conversation about mental health and therefore changing the culture. How will we build back resilience?  We're diving into these questions with a special four-part series called “Catalysts for Change: How Are You Feeling?” In our last episode, Jill spoke with Kat Boit, student leader at Harvard University and co-president of Active Minds, a nationwide organization aiming to change the conversation about mental health and provide support and awareness for college students across the country.
