Weitergehendes findet sich u.a. in Jonas Tögels Buch „Kognitive Kriegsführung“. It's another bucket-list conversation with one of Tim's favorite players from the legendary New York Cosmos of the original North American Soccer League - defender extraordinaire (and de facto club keeper-of-the-flame) Werner Roth.   A childhood émigré of his native Yugoslavia in the mid-1950s, Roth spent the bulk of his youth in New York City - cutting his semi-professional teeth in the heavily ethnic, regionally competitive and historically influential German American Soccer League with German-Hungarian SC - where he eventually caught the attention of the new local NASL expansion franchise in 1971.   Roth joined the Cosmos the next year as one of its precious North American players, helping the club secure its first-ever league title and quickly establishing himself as a reliably solid defensive back whose presence could be counted on - especially as the team's ambitions grew.   By 1977, Roth had become captain of a high-wattage international superstar lineup featuring the likes of Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, and Giorgio Chinaglia - winning back-to-back Soccer Bowl titles and a global following.   We talk about all of it - plus Roth's time on the US National Team, his role in the cult classic WWII soccer movie Victory, thoughts on the current state of soccer in the US, and the potential for a Cosmos television miniseries in the not-so-distant future.

We can't imagine there's someone out there who's interested in this podcast and hasn't heard of Mark Waid, but just in case: he's written just about every major Marvel and Brand Echh character over the course of a 35+ year career in comics. He created the Elseworlds imprint for DC Comics, and his and Alex Ross's Kingdom Come continues to be critically and commercially regarded as one of the greatest comics stories ever, nearly 25 years after publication. At Marvel, he co-created the Age of Apocalypse and Onslaught for the X-universe, succeeded Mark Gruenwald's legendary run on Captain America and stuck the landing, wrote about a hundred issues of Amazing Spider-Man, returned the World's Greatest Comics Magazine to greatness with a three-year run on Fantastic Four, won a bunch of Eisners during his tenure on Daredevil, and so much more, you guys. The guy's Wikipedia page has sub-pages.He's also the publisher of Humanoids and has written or held executive positions for virtually every comics publisher active in American comics in the last quarter-century. We can't figure out why he spent almost an hour and a half with us either, but we're immensely grateful that he did.Per our "Recommendations" segment, please be sure to check out Portland's own Karl Kesel's Kickstarter for Impossible 2: Impossible Jones & Holly Daze Team-Up!Also, everyone on the podcast is a big fan of (and supporter of) The Hero Initiative, which creates a financial safety net for comic creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It's unclear as to which one is more cringe-worthy!   weirdcomicshistory@gmail.com @reggiereggie @AceComics chrisisoninfiniteearths.blogspot.com TAGS: Lois Lane, Superman's Girl Friend, I Am Curious (Black), African-Americans in comics, Robert Kanigher, Vince Colletta, Werner Roth, DC Comics, history, comics history, Black Like Me, civil rights, 1960s

This week, Chad interviews the legendary Marvel writer and editor, Roy Thomas (who is joined by his manager John Cimino)! Roy wrote the X-Men for years after Stan Lee and Jack Kirby left the book. While he worked on many other things, we focus this conversation on his early X-Men work with Werner Roth, Neal Adams, and other iconic artists. Roy discusses his original villain creations, his work with iconic characters, and how the X-Men have developed over the years. Then he talks co-creating Wolverine, and his upcoming work in X-Men Legends! This interview will change the way you see the 60s X-Men completely.
