Julie Brown is a high energy Keynote Speaker who teaches the importance of networking. She is also the author of This Sh*t Works: A No Nonsense Guide to Networking Your Way to More Friends, More Adventures, and More Success, as well as the host of the This Sh*t Works podcast. Prior to her burnout, Julie was overworking herself to the point that she jokingly was jealous of a woman who had awoken from a three day coma, because at least that woman got to sleep. She and her husband were working such hectic schedules that they would not see each other at all during the week. Everything changed when the pandemic hit and Julie realized that the hustle lifestyle had tricked her.    Hustle culture is causing people to overwork themselves until they burn out. Julie was going ‘balls to the wall' for everything every day of her life, except when it came to resting. She shares that the pandemic was a real wake up call, because she and her husband were unsure how they would ever go back to that jam-packed scheduled to the minute lifestyle. In addition to talking about Julie's burnout story, Cait and Julie talk about the importance of networking, how to build a community, and the underestimated strength of weak connections.    Have you ever thought a three day coma sounded appealing? Tune into today's episode of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast for a conversation with Julie Brown about building relationships, the dangers of hustle culture, and allowing yourself to rest.  Quotes • “Your question to me was, ‘Oh, do you have a burnout story?' And it was like, ‘Oh, you mean the time I was getting ready for work, and I heard the story about a woman who had just woken up from a three day coma. And I was jealous of her, because she got to sleep.' And then I said to myself, ‘well, that's what I need. I just need a well timed coma. And then I'll just rest and then I'll be able to get up and I'll be good to go.' And I knew something was wrong in my life where I didn't have time to rest unless there was a medically induced coma in my future.” (2:37-3:21 | Julie) • “There was a point when I was hoping for a coma that I said, ‘Why am I working so hard for someone else? Why do I have this drive to do this for someone else? Can I convert this energy into something else for myself?'.” (6:11-6:29 | Julie) • “You need to have that community in place before a crisis hits, because it's very hard to build a community in crisis.” (19:40-19:48 | Julie) • “Asking for what you need, what would be helpful to you, because you have already given back to your network, because your network wants to be there for you, is invested in your success, whether that success is your mental success, whether it's your financial success, that's not needy.” (21:01-21:19 | Julie) • “It's okay for us to be in places of need sometimes and be in places of abundance sometimes, as long as when we're in places of abundance, we are giving back to our community and giving back to our network.” (21:21-21:32 | Julie) • “If you are keeping score in your relationship, and you are always expecting tit for tat, you're never going to be happy.” (25:08-25:18 | Julie) • “I always tell people to build their network slowly and with purpose, because you cannot manage growing, fostering a number of relationships and do it correctly. And do it without getting tired, because managing relationships takes a lot of time and energy.” (40:04-40:28 | Julie)   Links https://cuely.ai/FRIED https://bearaby.com   Connect with Julie Brown: Website: https://sayhitojulie.com                    https://juliebrownbd.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/juliebrown_bd/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliebrownbd/   XOXO, C   If you know that it's time to actually DO something about the burnout cycle you've been in for too long - book your free consult today: bit.ly/callcait   https://friedtheburnoutpodcast.com/quiz   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Pitching bold marketing to health system leadership (encore)

The No Normal Show by ReviveHealth

TakeawaysObstacles left and rightIt's challenging to sell bold marketing ideas anywhere, but the nature of health systems and their power dynamics make it especially difficult.Health system leaders are predisposed to resist the unknown – the risks – because they deal with life and death every day. What makes them good at their jobs is, in many ways, the opposite of boldness.Given differences in expertise between marketers and senior health system leadership, marketers must also overcome a large understanding gap. The more you know about the marketing craft, the more difficult it becomes to explain to non-experts. In his book, To Sell Is Human, Daniel Pink calls this phenomenon “attunement.” Strategies for selling bold marketing ideasMaster your storyMarketers need to build stories that compel their leaders to take a chance on bold marketing, much of which has to do with perception. For example, in 2017, scientists found that they could increase the quantity of fruit and vegetables consumed by creating a dedicated space in shopping carts for fruits and vegetables. In response, the average consumer purchased more fruits and vegetables because they were psychologically nudged in that direction.Marketers can nudge leadership teams to take specific actions by giving them options. Like pricing tiers, you can bring the whole set upwards in boldness by offering three options knowing the middle one is most likely to be picked. However, when presenting options, never offer an option that you wouldn't be comfortable executing because sometimes that is the option that your audience picks. Recruit influencersA way to build confidence in those you're trying to influence is through social proof. To sell bold ideas, health system marketers need to understand which parties influence key decision-makers. In many systems, physician and service-line leaders are key influencers.Chris gives the example in which one of our clients loved a bold concept presented to them but needed to sell their organization on the idea. One of the system's top neurovascular surgeons stumbled upon the campaign concept and raved about it. Since this individual generates so much revenue for the health system, his opinion drastically influenced the CEO's decision to accept the idea. Express limitationsPhysicians are natural skeptics because their practice centers on science. Marketing doesn't always inspire confidence because not all marketing is based on science. When presenting bold ideas, don't be afraid to acknowledge the limitations of your research and hypotheses. By not having all the answers, health system marketers can increase their audiences' receptiveness. Selling bold ideas in practiceVCU Health is an academic system that runs on its own authority, which is unique because most are run by the state.VCU Health hired Revive to help their team fight vaccine hesitancy in Virginia. Our research showed three populations that were particularly hesitant – young, Black, and Hispanic populations. These groups didn't feel like the vaccine was for people like them.To resonate with these hesitant groups, Revive created the campaign, This Sh*t Matters, placing a heart over the third letter of “Sh*t” to indicate a double entendre. The campaign featured members from each of the hesitant communities and why the vaccine mattered in their life. While Revive came up with the idea, VCU Health's Chief of Marketing, Cynthia Schmidt, championed and sold the idea internally, tapping into both university, hospital, and peer influencers prior to pitching to senior leadership. These glowing endorsements gave her the credibility she needed to get approval to launch “This Sh*t Matters” out in the market. When crafting her story, Cynthia appealed to the topic that was top of mind across the system: a huge increase in the number of young people in the ICU. Cynthia crafted her story based on this priority, communicating that VCU's mission is lived out in the moments when they step up to do something bigger and bolder. The juice is worth the squeezeWhen your ideas are bold, others start to help you out. There were so many people who wanted to take part in the campaign or lend their expertise/resources.For example, sports stadiums opened up extra media placements within their stadiums, people called into radio stations requesting to tell their story for why This Sh*t Matters. There's a newspaper in Richmond that got a note from a complainer who said, “this isn't worthy of a newspaper like yours.” The newspaper responded by saying that they believe in the work and its mission.Vaccination rates increased within the community after the launch of the campaign. The campaign also demonstrated a competitive business impact.

Remember when we were all told to work from home for two weeks. And those two weeks were supposed to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. And then those two weeks turned into a month and then another month, and now we have strung those months together to form a year, 525,600 minutes Prior to the pandemic if you had asked the top business advisors how long it would take to transition almost every company and their workforce from in person to virtual they would have told you that it would take years to accomplish - and yet we did it nearly overnight. The question remains will we ever go back? The changes that happened in how we conduct business in that seemingly overnight shift, are they here to stay? According to the experts yeah. A number of the changes will be permanent. Listen as I break down the four changes that are definitely here to stay, and give a visual explanation of what 530,000+ American lives lost actually looks like. Miriam Webster defines the word too as to an excessive degree or to such a degree as to be https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/regrettable (regrettable). How many times has that word held you back? As in saying to yourself I'm too old, or I'm too young, it's too late, it's too early, I'm too fat, or perhaps as has happened to me on numerous occasions someone has accused you of being too much.  In this episode we take a look at the thought process around using the word too in order to describe our age, our appearance, our personality and so much more - and then letting the “degree as to be regrettable” for each of those things stop us from creating big change in our lives and careers.  Age is just a number, weight is just a number and you will never be too much for someone who can't get enough of you. The Drink of the Week: Long Island Iced Tea and the Blue Long Island This drink is a hot mess combination of Vodka, Gin, Rum and Tequila topped with Triple Sec because four alcohols wasn't enough and a splash of coke. You take a sip of this and your tastebuds literally scream LET'S GET LIT and wake up with a hangover and regret. If you want another equally hangover inducing variant, you can swap out the triple sec for blue curacao and the coke for sprite viola you have yourself a Blue Long Island.  If you liked what you heard today, please leave a review and subscribe to the podcast. How often do you think you use the word just when describing yourself or asking for something. For example, when you describe what you do like this, “I'm just an assistant manager;” “I'm just an administrative assistant;” “I just graduated college, I just got my degree.”  Or how about in your email correspondence, for example, I'm just emailing to check in. I'm just wondering if you had time to review my proposal. I just wanted to see if you had time to talk. The word just  frequently functions as a “subtle message of subordination, or deference.” We constantly fall back on the word just because we don't want to feel like we are bothering someone, or being a nuisance. Stop it. When you use the word just you are actively diminishing your importance.  In business using the word “just” serves to make the other person think that what you are working on isn't important.  Listen in to learn how to start removing the word Just from your vocabulary to start creating more clear and confident correspondence.  The Drink of the Week: Graft Cider, Birds of Paradise Moscow Mule Cider This Polynesian inspired Moscow mule is bursting with ginger and finishes with soft citrus and hibiscus berry notes. Ask any average person why they haven't accomplished their goals yet, and more often than not, their answer will be because they are afraid that they will fail. Why are we, as humans, taught to fear failure, and where does it have its roots? Ever since our school days, we are taught to categorize things as either right or wrong. The answers are either correct or incorrect, pass or fail, with zero lessons designed to teach you how to learn from your failures. We are taught only to be embarrassed by them to fear repeating them. You can't figure out if something works until you break it apart, and that is what our guest today did. Without ever having been in front of a live audience or even trying her hand at comedy before, Geri signed up not only for a stand-up class but an improv class, too, simply because she was interested in it and had always wondered if she was funny. What she got out of it was an amazing mechanism for overcoming her fear of failure. Geri Paige Butner is a Business Launch & Life Alignment Coach, who helps people align their life and work with what brings them fulfillment and joy. Geri shares with us the crazy journey she's had as a stand-up comedian, how she has learned from repetition, retooling, and keeping her cool with a subjective audience. She also discusses the variables that you need to consider when presenting in front of a live audience. Remember the episode with Nicole Kalil where we talked about how perfection is your number one confidence derailer? Well, that sneaky bugger keeps coming up over and over again, and today we discuss how everything doesn't have to be perfect, that there is tremendous value and opportunity in things that are not perfect. We begin to take bigger risks when we know that we will survive whatever we take on. Listen in and make the best out of another few minutes of your life! The Drink of the Week is The Rusty Nail Cheers to all the times you #NailedIt and failed miserably at trying something for the first time. It's a simple combination of scotch and the scotch-based liqueur Drambuie, a word derived from the Gaelic meaning “the drink that satisfies. Aren't we tired of the energy it takes to continually be thinking about our bodies and what other people think of them? Can you imagine what you could do with all the extra energy that you waste fretting about what size jeans you fit into? You would have more time for friends, for work, for actually being active, and you can bet your ass you'd be happier too. But it's not that easy. Especially for me. Designing a podcast episode around the subject of body positivity, body acceptance, and creating a more welcoming networking environment for our plus-sized colleagues and contemporaries wasn't something I could do alone because I haven't gotten there yet. At my heaviest, my weight pushed me into the category of clinically obese, and at my thinnest, I was so thin that I stopped getting my period at the age of 32. I'm 44 and I still have times when I downright obsess about my weight.  This is why for this episode I have asked Body image Coach and Best-Selling author Summer Innanen to join us. When I discovered Summer's website, with a picture of her taking a sledgehammer to a scale and then raising that sledgehammer in victory above her head, symbolizing a fiery, free and untamed life I knew she was the person to walk us through this conversation. In addition to being a best selling author and body positivity coach, she is the host of Eat The Rules, a podcast dedicated to empowering people to live life on their terms! This conversation taught me a lot of lessons. One, that body positivity doesn't mean that you love the way your body looks every day; it means that you don't think about your body in negative terms, that you accept it the way it is. And two, that it would be a lot easier for people in large bodies to accept their bodies if there wasn't consistent messaging by the media, advertising, their family, and the general surroundings that told them what they looked like wasn't beautiful or athletic or acceptable. Listen in for tips to feeling more positively for your body and learn how self-love can take you on that much-needed healing journey! The Drink of the Week is The Yellow Bird, a super fun combination of white rum, Galiano (a golden, sweet vanilla-anise Italian liqueur), triple sec, and lime juice. It is served straight up as a martini. For today's drink, I took inspiration from something Summer said in the interview- You're going to have bad days, and you will have really good days, but for the most part, we want balance in how we look at ourselves, like how the wings of a bird balance it in flight. Do you ever hear a shitty inner voice in your head that tells you that you aren't worthy of things, or that you can't accomplish something for one reason or another? That voice is called your Inner Critic. It's created by the voices you hear when you are in the formative years of your childhood. It could be the voice of your past, your mother, your father, an aunt, or a school bully. This voice can grow loud and paralyzing if you don't discover ways to silence. So, how do you arm yourself with ways to overcome this voice in your head - because not only is this voice a real asshole, it's a liar, liar pants on fire!  Welcome to Episode 25 where my special guest Mia Scharphie joins us to teach you how to silence your inner critic and move beyond the shitty narrative it plays in your head! Mia is a trained facilitator, the founder of the Build Yourself workshop- a programme that helps women build the dynamic, powerful and meaningful careers and businesses they want, and has run research efforts for the Harvard Business School. In this episode, we discuss why accountability and trust are key to building your career and how to find the “right” accountability partner for your business, why your inner critic does not serve you any functional purpose and how to mute that shitty voice. Your inner critic gives you a skewed perception of reality. Only you can acknowledge that this voice is not based in reality. If you write down the things that this voice says to you and then read them out loud, you will discover what complete and total bullshit it really is. Perhaps you should name your inner critic and then tell it to shut the fuck up repeatedly until it doesn't talk to you anymore. Tune in. We could help you do that! You walk into a room full of people you've never met before; self- doubt, fear, apprehension, do they all kick in? The same probably happens when you speak up and share your opinions or ideas in a work meeting. What does it take you to effectively conquer your mind in such situations? It takes a belief in yourself. It takes confidence. So, if confidence looks so good on you, what keeps you from wearing it everyday? And the confident people, what have they discovered that you don't know yet, what is their secret to being confident? Our guest today is Nicole Kalil, an amazing speaker, coach and also the host of the podcast "This Is Woman's Work". Nicole spent most of her professional life with a Fortune 500 company, where her passion for leadership led her to become the first female Chief Development Officer in the 160-year company history. She joins us on the episode to give us matchless advice, definitions and actionable tips on building self-confidence! And to quench my thirst for constantly validating opinions with research, Nicole makes known that confidence could well have something to do with your genes. But, even if that were the case, it would constitute only 25 percent of your total confidence level. So, confidence is a skill you can always develop! Sounds good? Listen in to today's episode to discover the major confidence derailers and why perfection tops the list! Nicole shares with us the 5 confidence builders that she has mastered: 1. Action 2. Failure 3. Grace 4. Choosing confidence 5. Understanding, awareness, and mindfulness that confidence comes from the inside You're going to achieve self acceptance and self belief by practicing the confidence boosters that Nicole mentioned, taking action, failing forward, giving yourself grace and choosing to have confidence in yourself. And when you do that, it will be easier to take your head trash to the dumpster and light that shit on fire. Tune in for unparalleled ideas on networking your way with more confidence and grace! The Drink of the Week is a cocktail called Crank It To 11 - and since last week was all about music and this week we are lighting our head trash on fire, I think it works well. (This amazing cocktail was a special Shaker and Spoon box that I bought for my husband. If you haven't tried Shaker and Spoon you totally should - I've included a link below where you can get $25 off your first box) Take some hickory wood chips (those come in the cocktail box) and make a little pile of them on a non flammable surface. Light them on fire. When they start smoking, put the glass over to trap the smoke. After you trap the smoke, flip the glass over and add one large ice cube - I used a huge square one from a mold. Then add 1.5 ounces of American Whisky and a little cherry syrup from the jar of cherries (we talked about this in a previous episode. Use really good cherries not the shitty red kind and 4 dashes of cherry bark vanilla syrup). Then use a cocktail stirrer to stir it up and add a black cherry as a garnish. I tell you this drink was fan-fucking-tastic! I am not joking. If you liked what you heard today, please leave a review and subscribe to the podcast. As Americans we are taught that we all have certain unalienable rights. Written right there in the pages of our Declaration of Independence is that we have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Something about that line has always gotten me thinking. And it's the word pursuit. You know why? Because I think of that word as having movement. The word pursuit, which means an effort to secure or attain, appears to me to be an ongoing effort, something which may slip through our fingers if we don't keep working on it. So if happiness or the pursuit thereof, is one of our unalienable rights, how are we doing with it, after some 200 years after the writing of that line? Well, research suggests that we aren't doing so great. A new NORC poll drawing on trends from the long running General Social Survey finds Americans are less likely to call themselves very happy than at any point since that survey began back in 1972. If you think it's because of the global pandemic you're both wrong and right: Research suggests that we've been unhappy for a while now. In March 2019, a full year before there was even a hint of an upcoming pandemic, The World Happiness Report, which is released to coincide with the United Nations International happiness day, stated that Americans are as unhappy as they've been in years. For the third straight year in a row, the US has dropped in the happiness rankings. So, how do we right this ship? How do we Bobby McFerrin our lives and ‘Don't worry, be happy'? 2020 is almost over. What a dumpster fire of a year AMIRIGHT? This is usually the time of the year when we gather our year end lists, think about all the things we have done, seen, heard and accomplished in the past 12 months. But right now the only thing I can think of is that I'm so glad it's almost over. Is it just me or are you also struggling to find things to be grateful for? I don't generally think of myself as an ungrateful bitch. But then I started getting nervous; what if I am and I don't even know it!? This question called for research, to see if some people are just more grateful than others, and if so why! Is there a gratitude gene? And what do you do if you don't have it? The research suggests that genetics may actually help explain why some people find it easier to feel and express gratitude than others. There have been studies that have explored what specific genes may help determine a person's grateful or less grateful disposition. Two promising candidates for this are the genes CD38 and COMT. While CD38 is involved in the secretion of the neuropeptide oxytocin, COMT acts in the recycling of the neurotransmitter dopamine. You remember our friends oxytocin from episode 20, and dopamine from episode 17 right. As I was pondering the research, I came across an email from a wonderful lady from my network who was starting a 28 day Gratitude journey on Facebook! Before my less grateful COMT gene could take over, I signed up for the journey, deciding to give my gratitude genes a workout. Each day within the Facebook community Beth prompted us to write down three things we were grateful for. And guess what? It totally helped me find the littlest things to be grateful for every day! We're joined in the episode today by the incredibly positive Beth Hewitt, who's a business and career strategist specializing in creative visualization, positivity and resilience. She's also the host of the Visualise You podcast. ( P.S. You're absolutely gonna fall in love with her accent!) Listen in as we discuss all about the 28-day Gratitude journey, why and how she decided to start it and how it's impacted the participants and their outlook on life. Also, how it legit helped me flex my gratitude muscles! There's absolutely no wrong entries for your Gratitude list, neither is there a specific time to practice it. Go at your pace and it becomes a habit! Drink of the Week Riverbench Blanc du Noir Sparkling Wine. Most people think of wine, especially in France, as a man's world. But look into the history of the three ladies mentioned in the episode to see how they revolutionized the champagne industry. We've all heard the line before, that it is better to give than to receive. During the holidays you'll hear it over and over again, but is it true, and if so why? What does the act of giving do for us? Sure, philosophers will tell you to give freely, but what about scientists? What does the data say - is there data to back up the idea that it is indeed better to be a giver than a getter?  Well, of course the data backs it up or this would be a pretty shitty podcast episode. But let's start by first defining what giving is. For the purpose of my research and this podcast we will use this definition. A https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift (Gift), is the transfer of something without the expectation of receiving something in return.  There have been a number of studies on the biological effects of giving - decades of research actually. Tune in the learn how giving activates regions within the brain associated with pleasure and how the act of releases the same hormones within the body that are released during sex! We also discuss three types of business interaction styles: takers, matchers, and givers. Listen in to determine which interaction style is yours.  We also take a trip to the island of Puerto Rico where we discover this week's Drink of the Week: Coquito or Puerto Rican Eggnog! Coquito see link for the full recipe: https://thenovicechefblog.com/coquito/ And if you would like a shout out for tipping your bartender and contributing to the ever growing This Sh!t Works bar tab click https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/JulieBrownBD?locale.x=en_US to make a donation. This week, while the country memorialized our fallen heroes, Julie & Brandy finally accepted that Corona is here to stay by introducing a permanently temporary, new segment called, "This Sh*tty Week in Corona."  The segment is nothing but depressing bullet points, just begging to be fast-forwarded.  After that they tell a rage-inducing tale about how the nation's Senate Majority Leader is quietly helping the republican party to take ownership of the Judicial Branch of government via the federal courts.  Not wanting to leave their 14 listeners with a gross taste in their mouths, the girls offer a wonderful palate cleanser in the form of Meghan McCain and her annoying recreational outrage directed (this time) at Chris Cuomo & his brother, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo).  The episode is, by no means, a deep dive, but sometimes a quick dip into the shallow end is all you need to get your life.  **************************************************************************************************************************** *** Subscribe to our Patreon Podcast! https://www.patreon.com/dumbgaypolitics **** *** Check out our website! https://www.julieandbrandy.com *****  ***** Dumb Gay Politics with Julie & Brandy **** Julie Goldman **** Brandy Howard **** Julie and Brandy *** The People's Couch *** DGP *** Gay Podcast *** Political Podcast *** Lesbian *** Bravo *** Starburns Audio Learn more about your ad choices.
