Sometimes it's necessary to stop what you're doing and figure out the next step. Dr. Sasha Shillcutt calls this process a pause and pivot and she believes it's essential to move forward.   What Happens When You Pull Back and Pause Get space to examine your life and figure out what you want Release yourself from what's holding you down and back Experience your emotions Move forward   About Dr. Sasha Shillcutt Sasha K. Shillcutt, MD, MS, FASE is a tenured and endowed Professor and the Vice-Chair of Strategy in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Sasha is the CEO & Founder of Brave Enough, a well-published researcher in cardiac anesthesiology and gender equity, author, and international speaker.  Sasha's greatest passion is empowering and encouraging others to achieve well-being in their professional and personal lives. She speaks frequently to executives and leaders on the topics of professional resilience and gender equity. Her TEDx talk titled Resilience: The Art of Failing Forward has been viewed by thousands of people. Her writing has been published in both the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA.  She leads conferences and retreats for professional women through her organization, Brave Enough. Her first book, Between Grit and Grace: How to be Feminine and Formidable, was released in February 2020.   Why You Should Pause It can feel so overwhelming when you're stuck in the constant mode of go, combined with people-pleasing. The internet can be a harmful place and Dr. Sasha Shillcutt talks about her experience with running her first Facebook group. Sasha talks about how miserable she was while running her Facebook group. She explains how she was keeping it a positive experience for all the group members, but at a detriment to her own mental health. She knew she had to pause and pivot, but the idea of closing her group scared her. But when Sasha finally did pull back from what she was doing, she realized what a good decision it was.   What Happens After a Pause When Sasha took her pause and pivoted, she truly felt free to make better decisions for her life and business. She was no longer tied to something that didn't feel aligned with her values and caused her more stress. It wasn't easy, but Sasha broke free from what held her back. Sasha describes the pause as not being easy - at all - and one of the hardest things she's done, but also one of the most worthwhile. She encourages everyone to pause and pivot when they feel it's necessary. While she was in this space of pause, she also allowed herself to feel her entire range of emotions, including those perceived negative ones she tended to aggressively push aside.   Homework for Women Physicians It's time to grow deep in self-awareness, set clear boundaries, and develop strong time management skills to create the work-life balance you desperately need (and deserve!). In the Brave Enough Masterclass Brave Balance, you will learn tools to live an empowered life and create a long-lasting work-life balance so you live a life you love. Have you ever taken a pause to pivot your life and move forward in a different direction? I'd love to hear about it if you'd like to share. If you haven't, is this something you feel might benefit this era of your life? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  Why pulling back is a good thing [6:00] What a pause can allow you to do [15:15] How to break free from what's holding you down [20:00] What happens emotionally after a pause [21:30] Why it's okay and essential to feel your whole range of emotions [22:00]   Quotes “Give ourselves permission, as women, every year of our life, or every minute if you feel like it, to pause and pivot. Pull back to have to move forward. Success isn't linear, it doesn't just move from one axis to another, there's a lot of stops and pauses along the way.”[5:20] “The pause hurts so bad. If you think about your success in life, you probably didn't learn much from it. But if you think about the times in your life that were horrible, you probably learned the most life lessons.” [10:34] “I think it's so easy to get sucked into likes, followers, and people-pleasing. But it's a really dangerous, risky place to be. It's so easy to cross that line and make it be unhealthy.” [25:37]   Resources Mentioned Find Out More About the Brave Enough Master Class 5th Annual Brave Enough CME Conference Between Grit and Grace: The Art of Being Feminine and Formidable by Dr. Sasha Shillcutt  Find Dr. Sasha Shillcutt Online Follow Dr. Sasha Shillcutt on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram  Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes Episode 59: Dr. Tonya Caylor on Thinking Outside The Box  Episode 60: Dr. Ashley Sandeen On Finding Herself Again  Episode 52: Dr. Stephanie Byerly on Healing the Healers

ETH 2.0: ‘When One Client Dominates’: A Case Study of the First Major Incident on Eth 2.0

In this week’s episode, CoinDesk’s Christine Kim and Consensys’ Ben Edgington talk about what caused 70% of validators on Ethereum 2.0 to stop producing blocks on the network and the important takeaways for protocol developers in light of this event. They also discuss the updated roadmap for the Eth 2.0 upgrade as outlined by Vitalik Buterin in a recent presentation. This episode is sponsored by hellointerpop.io and The Sun Exchange.Last Friday, April 23, founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, gave a presentation at the Scaling Ethereum Summit on the upgrades he expects to come after the network’s transition to a new, environmentally friendly proof-of-stake (PoS) protocol. “The first set of things here is a lot of security improvements, some economic sustainability improvements and some features,” said Buterin at the event. “The far future is just about really nailing down and improving and having extremely strong guarantees about the security of the system.”Buterin detailed a number of different upgrades after PoS including sharding, rollups, verifiable delay functions, Ethereum Virtual Machine improvements and more. To Kim, the main takeaway from the presentation was not the individual upgrades and their technicalities, but the sheer breadth of work still to be done on the protocol even after its long-awaited merge with the Eth 2.0 network. “When are we going to get to the end here? ... There seems to be a lot more that we’re going to have to continue to talk about when it comes to Ethereum finally reaching its production ready, world computer phase,” said Kim. To this, Edgington noted the vision outlined by Buterin was indeed ambitious and big but that he was in full support of such a roadmap. “I love this idea that we just keep on growing and evolving. It keeps me engaged. There are lots of very interesting problems to solve,” said Edgington. Speaking of a problem, the Ethereum 2.0 network had its first major incident on April 24 after 70% of validators on the network were suddenly unable to produce blocks. Developers quickly identified the root cause of the issue was from a bug in the Eth 2.0 software client, Prym. A patch was rolled out to affected validators the same day. The issue still persisted through till Sunday, however, for certain validators who hadn’t upgraded to the latest version of Prysm. The important lesson, according to Edgington, is for validators, staking pools and developers to be more proactive about client diversity on Ethereum 2.0. “Here’s an example where the network would have been much more robust if each of the four clients had 25% of validators each. In that case, you’d only be missing a quarter of the blocks if this had happened and the network would have been more or less fine,” said Edgington. “But when one client dominates and that client has a problem, it’s really serious for the whole network.”Catch the full breakdown of how developers are responding to Saturday’s incident by listening to the entire podcast episode of Mapping Out Ethereum 2.0 hosted by Edgington and Kim. How To File An Agency Protest?

First you must present your factors in a concise and logical format so that the contracting agency can review for protest.  If you fail to present your facts in this matter the agency may elect to dismiss the protest.  And we don’t want that.  Your protest should include the following information: Name, Address, Fax and Telephone numbers of the Protester. The Contract or Solicitation Number. A detailed statement of the legal and factual grounds for the protest. You must include a description of resulting prejudice to the protester. Include copies of any relevant documents. You must request a ruling by the agency. Also include a form of relief. You must establish yourself as an interested party. You must establish that this protest is timely. You must address the protest to the contracting officer or other official designated to receive protests. You have the right to request an independent review of your protest at a level above the contracting officer. All solicitations should advise potential bidders and offerors that this review is available. The official does not have to be within the contracting officer’s supervisory chain.  When it is practicable the office should not have been previously involved in the procurement.  If there is an agency appellate review of the contracting officer’s decision on the protest, it will not extend GAO’s timeliness requirements.  You still must file your protest with GAO within that 10-day timeline. Now remember that protests based on alleged improprieties in a solicitation must be file before bid opening or the closing date for receipt of proposals.  All other protests must be filed no later than 10 days after the basis of protest is known or should have been know, whichever is earlier.  In addition, the agency can determine that a protest was raised from issues significant to their acquisition system may consider the merits of this protest which was not filed within the specified time frames. What Happens After the Government Receives my Protest? The Government cannot award the contract once they receive your protest.  That is of course, unless the contract award if justified.  In order to justify the contract award, the Government needs to put into writing its urgent and compelling reasons or its determination that it is in the Governments best interest to do so.  This determination or justification needs to be approved at a level above the contracting officer or by another official depending on the agency procedures.   The contracting officer will inform those contractors who submitted bids that they might become eligible for contract award pending the outcome of the protest.  In order to avoid the need for re-solicitation, the contracting officer will reach out to the bidders to extend the acceptance time.   The Government can depending on the urgent need of the supplies or services made a determination that it is in the best interest of the government to award the contract without waiting for the resolution of the protest.  Otherwise, the government will suspend all contracting actions until the protest has been resolved.   The agency protest does not extend the time for obtaining a stay at GAO.  Agencies may include as part of the agency protest process a voluntary suspension period when the agency protests are denied and the protester files with GAO.    No one wants to see a protest on a contract award including the contracting activity.  The contracting activity will do their best to resolve agency protests within 35 days after the protest is filed.  That is to the ext3nt permitted by law and regulations.  During this time the parties may exchange relevant information.   Once the agency has reached a decision on the protest, they need to explain their position to the protester.  This explanation needs to be logical and will also provide a method of acknowledgement of receipt by the protester.   But wait, what if I want to file my protest with GAO.  That is what we will be discussing next.

It's also important to pay a retainer for that company at least for the next 6 months to make any updates.
