In this powerful conversation, I sit down with Emily McElwreath—art advisor, independent curator, educator, and host of The Art Career Podcast. With nearly two decades of experience, Emily has worked with some of the most influential figures in the art world, from Andy Warhol to Alice Neel. She shares how artists can reclaim their power, normalize ambition, and take control of their careers. We also explore what collectors are looking for today, how to navigate the art market, and the evolving role of art advisors. Emily offers practical networking strategies for artists and industry leaders, insights on working with high-profile guests, and details on her recent Art21 collaboration. Plus, she introduces her must-have resource for emerging artists, Navigating the Art World: A Practical Guide for Artists. Whether you're an artist looking to elevate your career or a collector seeking guidance, this episode is filled with expert insights and actionable strategies to help you thrive.   Key Takeaways:   Artists must reclaim their power—they are at the center of the art ecosystem. Ambition is not a dirty word—owning your career is essential for success. Networking isn't about chasing opportunities—it's about building authentic relationships. Art collectors should buy what they love but also stay informed about the market. The art world is unregulated, making it crucial to work with trusted advisors. Artists should not rely solely on galleries—direct sales and relationships matter. Emily's free artist guide, Navigating the Art World, is a must-have resource for emerging artists.   Sound Bites:

This conversation between Shana Moulton and e-flux Film curator Lukas Brašiškis was recorded live at e-flux following a screening on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Weaving feminist undertones with surrealist imagery and sound, Shana Moulton's work explores the nuances of the contemporary psyche. Her Whispering Pines series, in particular, delves into the intricacies of self-help culture, the quest for spiritual meaning, and the often comedic absurdity of personal wellness rituals. In her performances, videos, and installations, Moulton, through the experiences of her alter ego, Cynthia, writes a narrative that is both personal and universally resonant, probing the boundaries between the mundane and the mystical in the time of global digital capitalism. The screening featured a selection of Shana Moulton's works: Whispering Pines Zero (2002, 6 minutes, a collaboration with Jacob Ciocci), Whispering Pines 1 (2002, 2 minutes), Whispering Pines 2 (2003, 4 minutes), Whispering Pines 5 (2005, 6 minutes), Repetitive Stress Injuries (2008, 12 minutes), The Galactic Pot Healer (2010, 8 minutes), Every Angle is an Angel (2016, 6 minutes), and the film-opera Whispering Pines 10 (2018, 35 minutes, a collaboration with Nick Hallett).  Moulton has had solo exhibitions at international institutions including Palais De Tokyo in Paris, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Kunsthaus Glarus in Switzerland, the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her work has been featured in Artforum, the New York Times, Art in America, Flash Art, BOMB, and Frieze, among others. Her work has been featured on Art21 and her single-channel videos are distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix. An edited version of this conversation was published on e-flux Film Notes. Film Notes, launched in June, features conversations with artists and filmmakers, scripts, and experimental writing on the moving image.

Papasakos Kauno rajono muziejaus direktorius Zigmas Kalesinskas.

Sculptor, Site-Specific Installation and Multidisciplinary Artist, Designer, Architect, Engineer, Educator and Provocateur - Abigail De Ville - calls in to The Junk and Jam Hour to catch up with Host and fellow High School of Art and Design Alumnus - Christopher Albert - to largely discuss her journey to becoming an artist who unabashedly manufactures, emotive pieces of three-dimensional work, rooted in the stirring themes of the history of racist violence, gentrification, and lost regional history. Her provocative, site-specific installations are purposefully sourced from objects and materials found from the streets of the surrounding areas of her exhibition sites - with the aim to highlight the stories behind such found objects, and the interconnections between our shared, messy histories. On topic is the inspiration she gained from her late grandmother, who inadvertently instilled in her a deep appreciation/curiosity for the stories aligned with cast aside items; our everyday fascination with the accumulation of stuff; and the irony of her work - bringing outside debris into pristine, sanitary galleries, hopefully planting the seeds of more divergent, compassionate thoughts in otherwise unaffected art-goers. She also talks about the processes, challenges and successes of some of her most notable, renowned work, - including Harlem River Blues, No Space Hidden (Shelter), and New Migration - an installation centered on the theme of the Great Migration of African Americans who fled north during the Jim Crow era, attracting some controversial attention. Despite the seeming weight of these subjects - this informative interview is terrifically fun! Earning her BA in Philosophy of Religion from Elon University, she continued her studies at the Corcoran College of Art. January 19 – March 10, 2016Kathleen O. Ellis GalleryGallery Talk: Wednesday, January 27, 6pmReception: Wednesday, January 27, 5-7pmLight Work is pleased to present Mass and Obstruction, a solo exhibition of work by artist Mary Mattingly.Mary Mattingly creates photographs, sculpture, video and large-scale public art projects ostensibly about climate change but revealing deeper focus on survival and endurance in the face of ecological degradation and violence. Describing photography as the universal language of storytelling, Mattingly blurs the line between fact and fiction, present and future. Using her camera both to document and fictionalize over thirteen years of her environmental art and activism, she creates images by digitally collaging together multiple locations. These fictional, non-specific locations often look strangely futuristic and allow for a conversation about the earth and our impact on it. For Mattingly the “location” is the world’s ecosystem. She looks at the big picture and forces us as viewers to confront our own culpability and the ethics of our choices, a fundamentally important pre-requisite for personal or political change. For the exhibition Mass and Obstruction, the artist presents images and objects that emerge from an unflinching scrutiny of her own consumption and life style as an artist.lg.ht/MaryMattingly—In conjunction with her exhibition at Light Work, Mary Mattingly will be presenting Human and Object, a selection of video works at Urban Video Project (UVP) at the Everson Museum of Art. Nick Ravich, director of production for Art21 in New York, talks about:  His approach as both a producer and a director of Art21 artist docs, which are produced in both shorter form as well as longer form on their most well-known platform, Art in the 21st Century, which is broadcast on PBS; the variation in artists’ approaches and responses to being subjects of Art21, and how inevitably they’re often made to be vulnerable, at the least by having a camera on them in their studio for an entire day (if not more); how Art21 survives as an institution, particularly with all of the other video-about-contemporary-art platforms that have sprung up since they launched; the affirmative dynamic Art21 has towards its artists, and how the process of choosing artists works (the artists almost always say yes); a bizarre experience he had with the photographer Kay Grannan when they were on a shoot and staying at a Las Vegas motel off the strip; and Nick launches into an insightful analysis of the differences between podcasts and video in terms of to what extent someone (artists in particular) will open up.

We watched an Art21 movie on three artists.  Katarina Grosse makes gigantic sculptural paintings involving trees, dirt, and the space of the art gallery itself.  Joan Jonas makes performance drawings involving dancers, musicians, and herself in her installations. Omer Fast makes experimental/journalistic-like movies about Drone Pilots or Porn Actors. We agree that performance art is problematic. Becoming the body that is viewed as the art is a little bit problematic. Where is the line? How much of that happens out of peer pressure? My definition of art is pretty broad and I would not say performance is "not art" however, I would definitely say that I cannot engage in it the same way that I would with physical space.  http://www.art21.org/artists/katharina-grosse

Abstraction in film for her is abstraction of time. Diana Thater builds a maquette, she photographs the animals that she displays. As viewers of videos on the Art21 website, we are really fascinated with the process of art making.
