California State Senate candidate Bishop Art Hodges explores the intersection of church and politics. Rooted in Jesus' prayer, “Thy will be done on Earth as in Heaven,” Hodges argues that political engagement and public service are Christian virtues. He believes pastors have avoided political issues for fear of dividing their congregations—but says that must end, because America's political landscape has shifted from Right vs. Left to Right vs. Wrong. With people of faith often withdrawing from the ‘unsavoriness' of politics, only 25% of evangelical Christians vote in California. Hodges lays out his plan to mobilize this demographic and rescue the Golden State from darkness and bankruptcy under decades of one-party rule.
After a lopsided victory earlier this month, can California's redistricting Proposition 50 survive a legal challenge? And why do last January's devastating fires in Los Angeles continue to raise unsettling questions? Hoover senior fellow Lee Ohanian and distinguished policy fellow Bill Whalen, both contributors to Hoover's California on Your Mind web channel, join Hoover senior product manager Jonathan Movroydis to discuss the latest in the Golden State including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's pending retirement, what the indictment of a former Newsom chief of staff says about Sacramento's political culture, plus a tech-rich Northern California county's search for more tax revenue – and, speaking of wealth, the politics and sensibility of a 5% wealth tax on California billionaires possibly headed for next year's ballot. Recorded on November 18, 2025.
Popular for their water- and oil-resistant properties, PFAS are found in countless consumer products, including rain gear. Photo by Gabriel Almanzar. Popular for their water and grease resistance, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used in countless everyday products, from cookware and cosmetics, to rain gear and cleaning supplies. They are sprayed on crops, added to food packaging, utilized in electronics, and much more. As a result, these substances — which have been linked to serious health impacts and have earned the nickname “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment — are now widespread in our water, soil, and air. Several states have begun to take action on the issue. But the road to PFAS regulation has proven challenging, including in the Golden State. Terra Verde host and Earth Island Journal managing editor Zoe Loftus-Farren speaks with Andria Ventura, legislative and policy director with Clean Water Action, and Bernadette Del Chiaro, senior vice president for California with the Environmental Working Group, about ongoing efforts to reign in our use of these toxic substances California. California's water recycling movement has evolved from experiments to expansion—driven by progressive regulations, proven technology, and positive public trust. In this episode, Traci Minamide, Greg Wetterau, and Roshanak Aflaki of CDM Smith share expert insights from decades of experience advancing reuse across the Golden State. They reflect on the past, when early projects like the East Valley initiative faced setbacks and public skepticism that reshaped how engineers, utilities, and communicators approached outreach and transparency. In the present, they highlight how clearer regulations, efficient treatment processes, and pilot projects have made large-scale water recycling both achievable and affordable—turning wastewater into safe, local drinking water for millions.Looking to the future, the panel envisions a new generation of systems powered by AI-driven operations, advanced membranes, and rapid water-quality monitoring tools that will make direct potable reuse more widespread and resilient than ever before. This episode is part of The Golden State of Reuse, a series exploring the past, present, and future of water recycling across California. The series is a collaboration with WateReuse California and sponsored by CDM Smith. Nine weeks after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott gave President Donald Trump the redistricting map he wanted in Texas, California Gov. Gavin Newsom roared back with an improbable victory on Election Day that will allow the Golden State to negate everything Abbott and Trump thought they were gaining in Texas. California political reporter Monica Madden and Texas House Democratic Leader Gene Wu both join host Jeremy Wallace to explain how much harder of a lift for Newsom this really was — with a lot of help from Texans, at least financially. It partly explains why Newsom is taking a victory lap in Houston to celebrate his victory. Plus, reporter Taylor Goldenstein joins the program to help make sense of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's somewhat awkward speech to college students, where he focused heavily on his own legal troubles and the attempt by fellow Republicans to oust him from office two years ago.
