***Throwback Episode*** In this episode, we take the Wonderlic Test, the NFL Equivalent of an IQ test taken each year by hundreds of Draft Prospects at the Scouting Combine. The Wonderlic was originally created in 1936 by E. F. Wonderlic. The Wonderlic Personnel Test was the first short-form cognitive abilities test in the areas of math, vocabulary, and reasoning. It's a popular group-intelligence test used to assess the aptitude of prospective employees and applicants for learning and problem-solving in a range of occupations. The Wonderlic is available in 12 different languages and is often used in college, entry level jobs, and team-making efforts. It consists of 50 multiple choice questions to be answered in 12 minutes. We describe the test in detail, take it ourselves, discuss our results afterwards (and which of our scores relate to famous NFL players and occupational median scores), things we would've done differently, and if we feel that it's an accurate assessment of a person's intelligence or not. We also discuss the Wonderlic Test scores of all of last year's Quarterback Draft Class: Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen. Take a sample 50-Question, 12-minute Wonderlic Test here and let us know your results! See if you're smarter than all three of us before you listen to the podcast. Think you can score a 50? In this freewheeling episode, we dive deep into the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence and its potential to disrupt industries from music to podcasting. With the help of caller Kyle from Madison, he explores the staggering pace of AI advancements and ponders the future of creative professions in an age of intelligent machines. The conversation then turns to the gridiron, as [Host Name] and his callers debate the merits of the Wonderlic test and the challenges of assessing "football IQ" in the modern NFL. They also break down the Packers' recent draft, grading the team's efforts to fill roster holes and establish a new identity under a young quarterback. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Packers podcast without some good-natured ribbing of the rival Bears. We gleefully dissect Chicago's offseason missteps and the delusional optimism of their fanbase. Sprinkled throughout are musings on the psychology of fandom, from the relevance of the Myers-Briggs personality test to the dynamics of trash talk and sibling-like rivalries between NFC North fanbases. Things discussed: Recruiting is #1: Should Ohio State fans be freaking out? Well yeah, because Michigan has Ohio State's class. Why are centers underrated? High schools can't waste beasts at center, and Wonderlic scores don't come out in college recruiting. Jerod Smith: How that all went down. How committable were his Georgia and Alabama and Tennessee offers? Pretty committable. I'Marion Stewart is their #1 WR since the July camp. Marquise Lightfoot is turning into an elite, good to have Stewart at his school in his ear but that one's an uphill battle. The three transfers: Those are all depth chart things after spring. NHG was still hurt. Henning is a loss but there were other guys doing that and he wasn't going to be getting many targets. Moten really fell off a cliff last year, and if he's behind Quinten Johnson and Zeke Berry, it wasn't happening. NFL Draft: Don't like the quarterbacks. Seth thinks teams are going to pass on QBs and take the personality gamble on Jalen Carter. Everyone agrees he's the best player in the draft, but even Georgia coaches are saying they won't miss him: Todd McShay has 7 sources. Brian: Ignore these quarterbacks, all of them are going to be failures. CJ Stroud: Every time he opens his mouth it's like stop talking. Michael Vick and Deshaun Watson are the guys you model yourself after? Losing to Michigan doesn't define me? You're a football player not a test taker? Dude! All I'm hearing there is Georgia coaches are going to bad mouth their own players at the draft; seems like something the recruits should know about. Can the Lions trade down and get Devon Witherspoon lower? Only if the QBs fall down to 6th and someone wants to trade up five spots to get one. Wolverines in the draft? Mazi Smith doesn't have the pass rush to be in the 1st round but solid 2nd rounder. DJ Turner on the other hand could make it. Seth: there's a pretty tight group of CBs and they're all in a pretty solid order so that run could happen in the 1st round or 2nd. He's got a really high floor and some team is going to see the ceiling too, because his one issue is he's too slight. Here's the Brett Kollman video I referenced.

Hour 1: There is a lot to recap with the local sports teams and we start with the Knicks winning Friday night and yesterday, taking a 3-1 series lead over the Cavaliers. Julius Randle did not play well the last two games. The Knicks fans don't know how to react to this winning of playoff games. Boomer & Gio were impressed with RJ Barrett. Boomer is pumped for tonight's Rangers/Devils game at the Garden. He was impressed by Devils' goalie Akira Schmid. Jerry is here for his first update and we talked about how passionate the Knicks' fanbase is based on their reaction to winning games in this series. Boomer doesn't like that we are talking about Julius Randle not playing well instead of the Knicks winning. Jerry has sound from the Knicks win yesterday. Gio doesn't understand why Boomer is suddenly defending Julius Randle when he had been going after him and wanted him off the team. Boomer said he's a positive guy and wants to focus on the wins. Charles Barkley is disappointed that Randle wouldn't talk to the media after a win. The Mets lost in San Francisco, their second straight loss. The Yankees lost their first series of the year, to the Blue Jays in the Bronx. The Tampa Rays have now hit HRs in their first 22 games so far. The Islanders lost and they are now a game away from elimination. Gerard Gallant said the Rangers were a little too ‘cute, cute' in their loss to the Devils. In the final segment of the hour, we talked more about the Knicks series against the Cavaliers. Pete Davidson was involved with a minor altercation with a male fan who was getting a little handsy. Gio said the Knicks have odd celebrities at the game.  Hour 2: The Jets and Packers are reengaging in talks to send Aaron Rodgers to the Jets. Gio wonders if it will feel like a big deal when it actually happens as we've been assuming it's happening for so long. Boomer says the Jets will be playing 5 prime time games and could be in a 6th prime time game if flexed in the final week. A number of Detroit Lions players have been suspended for gambling. Some of them even bet from the Lions facility. Gio doesn't think it's a big deal, but the callers seem to disagree. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sad sounds of the Cavaliers play-by-play team as the Knicks beat them twice this weekend. The Mets lost to the Giants, the second straight loss although they went 7-3 on the west coast trip. The Yankees lost a series to the Blue Jays. Boomer wonders if the Yankees can catch the Rays. The Islanders lost again and are one game from elimination. In the final segment of the hour, Morgan Wallen canceled his show at the last minute due to voice problems. There are rumors he was hammered and hanging out with multiple women which was the cause of the problems. A caller wonders if the Devils will start Schmid at goalie again tonight.  Hour 3: We talked about Anthony Gallo and how he thought he had something on his genitals but it was just freckles. Boomer wonders if it was a ‘tug burn'. We also talked more about the Knicks series against the Cavaliers. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Knicks taking a 3-1 series lead over the Cavaliers with two wins over the weekend. Jerry also went around the NBA from yesterday's playoff games. Dillon Brooks doesn't know why people think he's a villain and intended to hit LeBron James ‘in the nuts'. In the final segment of the hour, Gio thinks somebody is out to get CJ Stroud. His cognitive test scores were leaked and they were not good. Rich Cimini tweeted about the Jets draft and said the belief is the Jets will take Broderick Jones, the Tackle out of Georgia. We also talked about the best and worst Wonderlic scores for QBs.   Hour 4: The NFL Draft is happening on Thursday in Kansas City and they should have good weather (it's an outside event). It also looks like we're getting great weather for the Five Borough Bike Tour. We also talked about the Knicks dominating their series against the Cavaliers. Boomer is pumped for Rangers/Devils tonight at the Garden. A caller talked about Phil Jackson's comments on how he stopped watching the NBA because it became too political with the messages. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Knicks beating the Cavaliers twice over the weekend. RJ Barrett was outstanding and he gave credit to Jalen Brunson. Josh Hart talked about the bench play and how good it's been. Knicks fans were going crazy outside the Garden after their wins. The Mets lost their second straight to the Giants yesterday in San Francisco. Anthony Volpe had an error followed by a Vlad Guerrero Jr HR. Gerard Gallant talked about ‘cuteness' hurting the Rangers. 92%ers we are back with the thirtieth episode of New Heights presented by our friends at Fireball and we have an exceptional one for you guys.  In this episode, we are talking about all things NFL Combine. Yes, we know this is the start of tampering season, but with Travis hosting SNL we had to delay the recording on this one a little bit.  We break down how getting invited to the combine actually works (07:10), what kind of training goes into preparing for the on-field drills (10:00) and revisit some of the formal interviews that didn't go exactly as planned (17:35).  Next, we tell you what to actually look for when you're watching players do drills (35:50), debate if we should retake the Wonderlic (37:40), and Jason gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like being back at the NFL Combine as a veteran (43:30).  We also have an incredible conversation with former Eagles scout and current NFL Network Draft Analyst, Daniel Jeremiah (45:42). The guys touch on why the Combine still matters (46:20), the players you have to see in person to appreciate (56:55), if Philly will draft a running back (01:02:27), Jason's actual scouting report (01:09:10), and how Daniel jumped from NFL scouting to media (01:10:57).  As always, watch and listen to new episodes of New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce every Wednesday & check us out on Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok for all the best moments from the show.  Follow New Heights on Social Media: http://hoo.be/newheightshow New Merch: https://homage.com/newheights  Support the Show:   Enjoy the #1 shot in the country responsibly and visit https://www.fireballwhisky.com to find out where you can purchase those little cinnamon delights Learn more about your ad choices. Matt Waldman’s RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: Accounting for Leverage with QB Tanner McKee (Stanford)

Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary illustrates how 2022 NFL Draft quarterback prospect Tanner McKee of Stanford accounts for the leverage of two defenders in coverage with his ball placement on a downfield target after evading two pass rushers early in the play. What Is "Accounting for Leverage?" Leverage is the favorable or unfavorable position that one player has relative to his opponent. Football analysts spend a lot of time on aspects of quarterbacking like coverage identification, progression reads, and play recall. These aspects of the position emphasize book smarts. A lot of book-smart quarterbacks struggle to deliver to their NFL expectations set during the pre-draft screening process. These book-smart passers ace the whiteboard portion of the interview, often earning praise that they see and understand the theory of the game like a coach. They impress during the interview, and, in the past, performed well on the Wonderlic--a test that had little value for football players because it didn't test the speed and accuracy of processing of information found on a football field. Dan Marino, Brett Favre, and Steve McNair — MVP quarterbacks — excelled on the field because they knew how to identify "what is open," and deliver the ball immediately. Russ Lande calls this "release confidence." I call it a fast and confident processor. Marino and McNair had low Wonderlic Scores. I don't know Favre's score, but he didn't know what a nickel defense was until he was two years in as an NFL starter. While understanding the academic side of football has a lot of value, there can be too much weight placed on it when evaluating the position. Quarterbacking is a performance job, not an academic one. What often separates the best NFL quarterbacks from the rest is the player's ability to account for leverage. It's an underrated facet of performance gaining more recognition because it's an underlying key to success among elite passers. When a quarterback identifies the leverage of key defenders relative to a route in question, he has instant data that tells him if the route will break open and where to place the football. The most advanced leverage readers will see the position of 2-3 defenders relative to the receiver's route and make complex placement choices that work well in that context. This isn't required with most routes. Much of the time a quarterback may only need to read the leverage of 1-2 defenders relative to a route. One of the best publications that I can recommend for understanding how to account for leverage in a manner that cuts through the if/then that can force quarterbacks to think too much in the heat of action is, "From Headset to Helmet: The R4 System," by Dub Maddox and Darin Slack. This publication might be the quarterbacking version of Bruce Lee's publication, "The Tao of Jeet Kune Do." Whereas Lee discusses all of the inefficiencies of Wing Chun and how Jeet Kune Do works past it, Maddox and Slack's publication is similar in this regard with leverage versus traditional methods of coverage processing. The Basics of Leverage Reading for Quarterbacks A passer is looking for the position of defenders relative to the receiver's route break, but not always during the break but at the top of the receiver's stem prior to the break. Here are basic considerations of favorable leverage: The defender is shaded outside the receiver during the stem and the route break is inside with no safety or linebacker shaded inside above or below the receiver. The defender is shaded inside the receiver during the stem and the route break is outside with no safety or linebacker shaded outside above or below the receiver. The defenders' chests and/or hips are open to a side of the field opposite the direction of the break. There are several other considerations. One is the position of defenders who cover the zone of the receiver's break or who aren't primarily covering the targeted re...

We surf waves, climb mountains, and dive into odorous media mixed zones with Elliott Almond. He has earned a reputation as one of the top Olympic writers and sports investigative reporters during his adventurous career of nearly 50 years. Elliott explains how Edwin Moses led him to break a major story about steroids before the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games. He recalls the bunker mentality needed to report on the tragic death of Hank Gathers. Why did Marion Jones talk to Elliott after a failed relay despite despising him? Hear about the craziness of writing about figure skating on deadline, how surfing with quarterback Todd Marinovich led to Elliott taking the Wonderlic test, and how climber Alex Honnold paused to provide a unique perspective. And there's the time a Secret Service agent pointed a gun at Elliott when he was chasing Richard Nixon . . . For nearly 50 years, Almond has been a sports journalist on the West Coast, noted for his enterprise work and Olympic coverage at the Los Angeles Times (1974-1996), the Seattle Times (1996-98), and the San Jose Mercury News (1998-2021). He has been recognized by such organizations as the Associated Press Sports Editors, Best American Sports Writing, the California Newspaper Publishers Association, and the Society of Professional Journalists. Elliott has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times. He is currently an outdoor columnist for the Cascadia Daily News in the Pacific Northwest.   Elliott covered 14 Summer and Winter Olympics, as well as the 1999 and 2007 Pan American Games. His investigative work includes reporting on the BALCO drug scandal, steroids in international track and field, Gathers' death, Magic Johnson and the issue of HIV, and cheating in college sports at Washington, USC, UCLA, and UNLV. He wrote about such diverse subjects as the Tour de France, social issues in sports such as abuse in women's sports, crime in college and professional sports, and concussions and the consequences of traumatic brain injuries.   A life-long surfer, Almond spent much of his youth traveling the Southern California and Baja California coastlines. He is the author of the book “Surfing: Mastering Waves from Basic to Intermediate.”   From 2009-13, Elliott was an instructor for San Jose State University, where he served as an editor overseeing the production of a broadsheet newspaper by teenagers participating in a high school journalism workshop.   Elliott graduated from California State-Fullerton in 1975 with bachelor's degrees in communications and political science.
