A simultaneous sense of peace and excitement washes over the young and young at heart, wrapping us in a warm embrace and inviting us to assume our roles as the ensemble of the enchanting tale that is told anew here each and every day. Anticipation escalates as we approach the Walt Disney World Railroad Station, gateway to the Magic Kingdom and prologue to the magnificent story that we can sense is about to unfold. Our heart skips (and so do our feet) as we approach the station, just in time to hear that familiar "Choo Choo!" of the train whistle as it steamrolls into its stop on Main Street, U.S.A. [04:33] Our walk through the train station tunnel sets the scene for our cinematic journey, a preview of the story about to unfold. Just as you would see as the precursor to a feature film, "coming attractions" line the walls as we travel back to turn-of-the-century America, offering glimpses of all the Magic and wonder that lay ahead. We step out into a bright, sunny day in the early 20th century, alive with all the friendliness and charm of small town U.S.A. Locals greet us as we meander past City Hall, while the town's merriest residents situated around Town Square to greet the newcomers, offer direction, and simply welcome us into the place they call "home." The atmosphere is light and joyful, playful and peaceful in simultaneous synchronicity. Show tunes and ragtime melodies amplify the whimsy of this place, reminding us of bygone days that somehow feel so familiar, although we never lived through the eras of their depiction. [04:52] As we leave Town Square, we herald a passing trolley car, which pauses on its journey right down the middle of Main Street, U.S.A. to welcome us aboard. This is the heart of America at the start of its entertainment heyday. A glimpse into the age of whimsical new discoveries designed to captivate all ages, Main Street U.S.A. is a step (back) in time. After centuries of toil, foraging and rebuilding to create the America of modern day contexts, folks who were hardly making time to enjoy a moment to themselves could be found on a Saturday afternoon in penny arcades, licking ice pops in the heat of the day and catching a cartoon in the cinema with the whole family. We can smell a sticky, sweet aroma drifting through the trolley, its caramel scent tempting our departure. The Confectionary is truly a Main Street, U.S.A. destination, a whimsical candyland where delectable temptations are dipped, decorated and displayed for passersby to lure them into indulgence. On the left, the Main Street Emporium is a treasure trove of sundries and souvenirs to remember a day spent in the Vacation Kingdom. [7:31] The clip-clop of horses and clang-clang of a bell lets us know that another trolley is approaching, and you never know who you might see aboard as it passes by. Waving in welcome and pausing to disembark and greet visitors with a song and dance, the young lovers of small town, U.S.A. are celebrating our arrival. Dressed in their Sunday best and spruced up for the season, you can't help but feel their infectious joy as jazzy brass and foot-tapping percussions make you want to sing and dance along. [12:45] As we continue to make our way up the street, the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor wafts the scent of waffle cones out into the street to entice visitors out of the heat and into an ice cream sundae. Casey's Corner is batter up with ballpark favorites, hearty fare to remind us of summertimes at a ball game, complete with Cracker Jacks and ice-cold soda pop. Minding we don't succumb to the chasms of trolley tracks, we make our way from Main Street into the Hub, a vast, sprawling courtyard filled with fountains and trees and grassy lawns for a picnic or a brief respite. [17:31] Up ahead, the gleaming spires of Cinderella Castle shine brilliantly in the sunlight. It's breathtaking, striking in both beauty and a sort of unreality that is both intriguing and enchanting. Still, adventure is calling, and the distant sound of tiki drums is too inviting to ignore. And so we bid our trolley car engineer a warm adieu and head in the direction of the percussive pandemonium. [18:19] Welcome to a land of mystery and discovery, brought to life by bongos and exotic songbirds, rushing waterfalls and the “yo-ho” of swashbuckling pirates. [19:47] An impressive treehouse climbs up through the tallest, widest limbs of Adventureland, stretching skyward in an entanglement so inseparable from the tree that it looks to have simply grown that way. The thatched roof, netted walls and mismatched brick-a-beach give all evidence to a hideaway for the most resourceful adventurers, of which we are surely included. [20:37] Beyond, we see the resident tiki gods are whistling in hollow, wooden tones as adventurers pass on their way to the World-Famous Jungle Cruise. Whether or not they return from this exotic foray…well, the tiki gods are always hedging their bets. [21:10] In the distance, we hear the unmistakable belt of a steamboat roaring into motion. Still, our attention is occupied by the Agrabanian marketplace we've stumbled into, ornate lamps and jewels scattered on groaning tables in tents for our perusal. Overhead, some mystical, enchanted carpets soar above Adventureland with passengers tipping this way and that. This is obviously the best way to get a bird's eye view, but be warned about the camels: they spit. [24:05] A jaunty accordion calls us away from the Arabian marketplace and into a Caribbean Mercado by the sea. Welcome to Tortuga, the stomping grounds of pillaging, plundering pirates. A seaside fortress clearly overtaken by the conquering seafarers, we'll have to keep our possessions close as we pass through; these pirates are not to be trusted. And so we continue, from the muggy shores of the Caribbean islands and into the parched desert of the American West. [25:48] Welcome to Frontierland. A town straight out of an old wild, wild western film and just as riddled with playful confusion, Frontierland is home to singin' country beats, a briar patch full of laughing critters, and a runaway mine train you'll hope doesn't go awry when you decide to climb aboard. A lively hoedown of banjos, mandolins and an unmistakable fiddle bring this tumbleweed town to life. A resounding “yee-haw” would not be out of place here, accompanied by the mechanical gunshots of players at the Frontierland Shootin' Arcade. Here, folks are accustomed to takin' it easy, and that sounds mighty fine to us. [28:42] Now, we could find ourselves a rocking chair on the porch of Pecos Bill's Tall Tale Inn and relax the day away, but there is much more to discover. We are once again traveling back in time, though back further than the turn-of-the-century. It is 1776, the birth year of America, and we are in the midst of a patriotic palaver that could only be called Liberty Square. Delicate four-four time signatures compose the waltz of this colonial town, redolent with signs of freedom and pride, from the Liberty Bell proudly displayed in the shade of the Liberty Tree and its 13 lanterns to the Hall of Presidents, a hallowed tribute to the nation's leaders across the centuries. We've found the source of the steamboat whistle; the stately Liberty Belle awaits embarkation for a trip down the Rivers of America. [31:02] We, however, are working our way upstream. Past the handsome mansion on the hill that rumor has it is ghoulishly haunted, and under the viaduct that separates Liberty Square from a place less rooted in history and more in, well, fantasy. Stepping out into the sunlight once more brings us right into the heart of every fairytale and “happily ever after” we've ever known. Welcome to Fantasyland. [31:27] It's off to Neverland upon entering this daydream come to life. A tower in the distance calls to mind the wistful maiden who brushed seventy feet of hair each day and longed for the chance to live a life beyond her narrow confines. The children of the world dance and play in harmony together on the musical tour of nations, it's a small world. And isn't it, though? How far and wide we've traveled, and how much more there is to see! [32:51] A clock chimes us into the afternoon as we make our way into the heart of Fantasyland, where a carousel stands as a talisman of childlike delight. Young and old riders choose their regal steed as our favorite fairytale melodies twinkle from some invisible calliope. [35:50] Beyond the castle walls and out of earshot of carousels and clock tower chimes lies a peaceful, quiet village on the edge of an undoubtedly enchanted forest. A quaint little cottage emits curious puffing and whirring sounds, and a fountain at the center of the village spills water out of triumphantly raised steins, held aloft by a most imposing figure and his crony. Violins lilt and twirl out the notes of a catchy waltz, a tribute to the enchanted objects that inhabit the castle in the mountains beyond, and their yearning desire to be “human again.” [37:43] All at once and yet seamless in its transition, those violins give way to a trance of woodwinds. Here we find a charming palace by the sea, extended by elegant stone archways that serve as aqueducts to let water rush in and out of the rocky harbor. A cascade of waterfalls climb over mossy rocks and half conceal a mysterious grotto, where legend tells that mermaids swim and gather treasures from the world above. [38:45] To the South, we hear the tinkering of seven diligent dwarves in a nearby diamond mine, their resounding “heigh-ho” the sign of the workday's end. It is evening, and as the sun gleans closer to the horizon behind us, we carry on. [39:23] The day's end does not draw a line under the fun, apparently, because it seems we've stumbled upon the Big Top circus as its rolled into the Magic Kingdom. The exuberant brass band music invites us to “step right up, step riiight up” and enjoy the marvelous wonders (and cool air) of Pete's Silly Sideshow. This place is perhaps the most colorful and whimsical of all we've visited today, with fortune tellers and snake charmers and magnificent flying elephants taking to the skies. The young and the young at heart find much to entertain them here, laughter a constant vibration above the din and echoing all around. [45:24] The future is calling, and for that we bid the circus farewell and head into our last stop in the Magic Kingdom. This intergalactic adventure is unlike anything we've seen yet. From Star Command to Progress City, this place is a vision of the future that we get to experience in our present. Welcome to Tomorrowland. [47:20] Instead of taking our tour of Tomorrowland on foot, we welcome you aboard yet another highway in the sky: The Tomorrowland Transit Authority: PeopleMover. A spacious and open air carriage in the clouds, the views up here (and the breeze) can't be beat. As dusk settles onto the Magic Kingdom, we watch the sun sink low and golden hour turn to blue as we make our way around Tomorrowland. [47:37] We speed past the hum and purr of the Tomorrowland Speedway, an attraction often smelled before it is heard. (If you know, you know.) The otherworldly spires of Space Mountain exude an iridescent glow in the fading light, enticing the curious into the cosmos. All around Tomorrowland, the familiar voices of monsters and space rangers can be heard amid the disembodied voice of our guide and the robotic, xylophonic music. So much to see and discover, this was the only way to catch it all while still adhering to Roz's “tight schedule.” [52:00] And so our grand circle tour of the Magic Kingdom comes to a whirlwind conclusion as we find ourselves back once again swaying to the ragtime swing of Main Street, U.S.A. We've had quite the adventure, traveling through time and space to spread the wings of our imaginations and experience the wonder so often lost at the culmination of childhood. The Magic Kingdom is a place that grants permission to those who have been told that whimsy is for weekends and fantasy is to be associated with ignorance. This is truly a place of yesterday and tomorrow, of fairytales come to life, of endless possibility. We hope you've enjoyed our journey through the Most Magical Place on Earth. We hope it has brought nostalgia and provided a space for joyous reflection. We hope it inspires your own imagination to awaken once again and soar to new heights. It is always Here for you, as are we - Here, With the Magic. See ya real soon!

News: As we suspected would happen, starting on June 15th, Disneyland will allow out of state guests to attend. The State of California strongly recommends that all guests be fully vaccinated or obtain a negative COVID-19 test before arriving at the parks. Face masks will still be required throughout the resort. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/05/disneyland-resort-theme-parks-to-welcome-back-guests-from-outside-california-beginning-june-15-plus-theme-park-reservation-window-expands-allowing-more-time-to-plan-your-visit/ With the addition of the out of state guests that will be flooding the parks, the reservation window to reserve a day in the park has expanded to 120 days. This doubles the size of the original reservation window. Dining reservations are still limited to 60 days for now. – https://www.micechat.com/292483-disneyland-update-avengers-fireworks-staffing-crowds/ As we spoke of last week, the possibility of fireworks returning to the parks as early as the 4th of July is not out of the question. MiceChat reports that some of the pyrotechnic cast members are being recalled. With fireworks being outdoors and guests being able to be physically distant, it is possible to have them back soon. – https://www.micechat.com/292483-disneyland-update-avengers-fireworks-staffing-crowds/ The night that this podcast is posted, June 2nd, Disneyland will broadcast live online the Avengers Campus Opening Ceremony. The stream starts at 8:15pm Pacific time on the Disneyland Facebook and Twitter channels, as well as on the Disney Parks Blog, and YouTube. A few “special guests” will be on hand to launch this new land. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/05/tune-in-to-avengers-campus-opening-ceremony-live-from-disney-california-adventure-park-june-2-at-815-pm-pt/ When Avengers Campus opens, there will be a standby queue to enter the area. This will be similar to the standby queue used for Star Wars: Galaxys Edge a couple of years ago. There is no word on how often this queue will be in place, or for how long. Disney is “strongly encouraging” guests to mobile order all food and beverages in the land. Guests will be directed to do so upon walk-up. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/06/01/disneyland-adds-avengers-campus-standby-queue-to-control-access-to-new-marvel-land/ With Avengers Campus opening this week, some of the merchandise for the new area has already appeared on shelves in the park. The Backlot Premiere Shop now has Spider-Bots, Web-Shooters, clothing, and more. There are two versions of the Spider-Bots; one larger one that has accessories that can be attached for $79.99, and a basic one, which is smaller and is not radio controlled for $24.99. The Web-Shooters come in two varieties; a Web-Shooter that looks like Spider-Man’s web shooter, and a Repulsor, which looks like Iron Man’s repulsor. A Power Band must be purchased separately for the accessory to work. – https://www.micechat.com/292487-avengers-campus-merchandise-now-available-at-disney-california-adventure/ Producer Vern will be very happy to hear this next bit of news. The World Famous Jungle Cruise is reopening to guests on July 16th, after being closed since the parks closed back in March, 2020. When it reopens, there will be a new story in place to help add a backstory to the opening day attraction. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/05/new-jungle-cruise-experience-will-open-at-disneyland-park-july-16-with-work-completed-at-magic-kingdom-park-this-summer/ The traditional red, white, and blue decorations in the parks for the summer have been installed. In preparation for Memorial Day, Main Street and Buena Vista Street were decked out in the patriotic colors, which are expected to remain in place through most of the summer. – https://www.micechat.com/292483-disneyland-update-avengers-fireworks-staffing-crowds/ Not only are the parks returning to more elaborate decorations, but so is Downtown Disney! The abstract sculptures that were installed two summers ago, which look like abstract shapes, until you find the correct angle, revealing a Disney character or scene, have been setup around the planters in Downtown Disney. – https://www.micechat.com/292483-disneyland-update-avengers-fireworks-staffing-crowds/ Cruella came to theaters and Disney+ Premiere Access this past week, and guests can see a prop from the movie at Downtown Disney. Cruella’s car is on display near the tram loading station, parked under a canopy and surrounded by posters from the movie. – https://www.micechat.com/292483-disneyland-update-avengers-fireworks-staffing-crowds/ A little known condiment is available at the Little Red Wagon on Main Street. Bacon Ketchup can be added on the side with a corndog. It is ketchup with bacon pieces mixed in. The Disney Food Blog says that they liked the flavor, but the ketchup was the main taste, even with the bacon. There is a strong bacon aftertaste. The side costs $1.19 in addition to the $9.97 corndog. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/05/29/review-is-a-disneyland-corn-dog-even-better-with-bacon-ketchup/ MiceChat posted a copycat recipe of a popular attraction that is celebrating it’s 62nd anniversary this year on June 14th. The Jolly Holiday Matterhorn Macaroon copycat seems fairly easy to make, with just 8 ingredients it shouldn’t be too difficult to replicate at home. – https://www.micechat.com/292739-how-to-make-copycat-matterhorn-macaroons-for-national-macaroon-day/ The Inside the Walt Disney Archives Exhibit that is currently at the Bowers Museum, will be moving to the Graceland Exhibition Center on July 23rd. Disneyland is looking great! There are still a few attractions under refurbishment, but the park overall looks spectacular. A new billboard has popped up in ToonTown! Mickey and Minnie are working to hide the construction of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway with the sign, reading “What big building? There’s no big building here!” – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/04/photos-video-disneyland-unveils-humorous-billboard-to-hide-mickey-minnies-runaway-railway-show-building-in-toontown/ There is a new PhotoPass+ One Day package available at Disneyland! Trader Sam will be operating the Lost and Found of the Jungle Navigation Company, at the direction of Alberta Falls, the proprietor. This is just one scene that will be updated for the Jungle Cruise at both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/04/jungle-cruise-getting-ready-to-set-sale-with-help-from-old-friend/ Guests attending the reopening of Disneyland, and getting a chance to ride Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. will want to check out the guide to getting a boarding pass for this popular attraction. A free roaming Groot animatronic character could be making its way to the parks in the future. This technology opens so many possibilities for interactive elements in the parks that are not limited by being stationary, or on wheels. The Groot character moves without any safety cables in parts of the video, and walks on two feet. Groot also moves his arms and has very realistic facial movements. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/04/photos-video-walt-disney-imagineering-has-created-a-free-roaming-groot-animatronic-character-that-will-change-the-industry-forever/ and https://techcrunch.com/2021/04/23/daily-crunch-meet-disney-imagineerings-new-robot/ In a follow up to one of our stories last week about the Disneyland Hotel getting guest scan in access, the fencing at the Downtown Disney entrance to the hotel has been uncovered and looks great! This week, the early bird gets the Touch of Disney worm, tips for making Touch of Disney a better experience, Avenger’s Campus updates, some fun surprises for guests and legacy passholders, we talk about our planning for our visit to Touch of Disney, and more! Please support the show if you can by going to https://www.dlweekly.net/support/. If you want some DLWeekly Swag, you can pick some up at https://www.dlweekly.net/store/. News: Arriving early seems to be the best bet when it comes to Touch of Disney. For those folks staying at a hotel on Harbor, the access is easier and you can arrive to Downtown Disney earlier than the 11:30am Mickey and Friends crowds. For locals, there is also the option to park at the Anaheim Hotel for $10 and walk over. The crowds do pick up in the afternoon and early evening, so getting in and ordering some food right away is a good idea. Avoiding food and checking out the characters and photo ops in the afternoon when it is busiest is the best idea. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/03/18/what-does-a-sold-out-a-touch-of-disney-crowd-look-like-at-disneyland/ Touch of Disney hasn’t been all sunshine and churros. Guests online and even in our community, reported some hiccups with the opening weekend of the event. Guests arriving to Mickey and Friends at 11:30 when the garage opened, then had to walk the tram route, which resulted in getting the the gates after the noon start time. Entrance was slowed down due to having to scan the ticket, take guests photos, then scanning the $25 food gift card to enter. Mobile ordering is highly encouraged, but also had long waits for food once ordered, that in some cases, was faster to stand in line and order at the booth instead. – https://www.mouseplanet.com/12893/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_March_22__28_2021 Something interesting popped up online this week with guests being able to see different angles into Avenger’s Campus with Touch of Disney going on. It appears that the Web Slingers attraction has a part of the track outside on the roof! We looked at some aerial photos to see if we could 100% confirm this, but there wasn’t a good angle to do so. There is a piece of concept art that has Mission Breakout in the background, so it could show proof of this. We were under the impression that the stunt show would be in this area, so we will see when the land and this attraction officially open to the public. – https://www.micechat.com/285785-disneyland-gets-ready-to-reopen-as-california-adventures-food-festival-kicks-off/ Attendees of the Touch of Disney event are able to look into Avenger’s Campus and see one of the decorative highlights of the new area – the Quinjet! It is parked on top of the location of the possible future location of the phase 2 big Avenger’s e-ticket attraction. – https://www.micechat.com/285785-disneyland-gets-ready-to-reopen-as-california-adventures-food-festival-kicks-off/ Guests were greeted with some unexpected refurbishments going on within California Adventure at the start of the Touch of Disney event. The rotunda for Ariel’s Undersea Adventure is behind scaffolding and being painted, as well as quite a bit of work around Pacifc Wharf, specifically the Cocina Cucamounga. – https://www.micechat.com/285785-disneyland-gets-ready-to-reopen-as-california-adventures-food-festival-kicks-off/ One amazing thing that has returned with the Touch of Disney event are the PhotoPass photographers! There are a number of locations that have been setup to take advantage of their return. There are also some locations that are setup without PhotoPass photographers that are just plain fun! There is a Mickey mural on the side of the D-Lish booth, a D23 Mickey Hands mural near Ghiradelli, butterfly wings by Paradise Garden, and more. For a complete list, check out the link in the show notes. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/03/20/heres-every-photo-op-at-disney-california-adventures-new-event/ During the Touch of Disney event, the games of Pixar Pier are open for guests to enjoy. Dividers have been installed between the seats and cast members are cleaning and sanitizing between each game. The games were free to play during the event, but it is unclear if it will remain that way. – https://www.laughingplace.com/w/news/2021/03/19/games-of-the-pixar-pier-operating-during-touch-of-disney-event-at-disney-california-adventure/ Legacy Passholders have a few places to pick up some nice swag at Touch of Disney. Over in Paradise Gardens, there is an AP corner with a photo op for the 20th anniversary of DCA, along with a Legacy Passholder magnet and button. News: Disneyland sent out a survey to some annual passholders this week with a TON of different pass and ticket options. We will talk more about this at length for our discussion topic! – Links here AP refunds- talk about our experience If the total amount paid toward a Passport (minus any refunds already given) exceeds the “usable value” of the Passport, that excess amount will be refunded for that Passport. The “usable value” of the Passport equals the total sales price of the Passport divided by the total number of access days to any theme park permitted under the Passport at activation and multiplied by the number of days that the Passport could have been used to visit any park per the terms of the Passport prior to March 14, 2020. – https://disneyland.disney.go.com/annual-passholder-refund-information/ This week, Disney announced some drastic changes coming to the World Famous Jungle Cruise. Former Jungle Cruise skipper turned Imagineer Kevin Lively announced the changes on a video posted by the Disney Parks Blog. The changes involve making the attraction more story based, focusing on a skipper and his passengers journey going awry. Two previous boats, the Mekong Maiden and the Kwango Kate will also make an appearance. Gone will be the “natives” of the jungle, making this a more inclusive attraction. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/01/new-adventures-to-cast-off-soon-along-world-famous-jungle-cruise-at-disneyland-park-and-magic-kingdom-park/ and https://www.micechat.com/280932-breaking-news-major-changes-coming-to-the-jungle-cruise-at-disneyland-and-magic-kingdom/ With Disneyland being closed for so long, UBS, a financial services company, expects attendance will reach “historical levels” by 2022. These changes breathe new life into this venerable and popular attraction, while at the same time being thoughtful and respectful and more inclusive. We look at the announcements made, and the context behind all of it. We also throw in our thoughts as to what's still missing in these announcements.

The TEA doesn’t think that this is anything to be worried about as Disney shifts to providing a better experience to the guests attending and increasing their spending. – https://wdwnt.com/2020/07/disney-parks-attendance-flat-in-newly-released-2019-tea-aecom-theme-index/ When Disneyland does reopen and the Cast Members are welcomed back to the parks, the backstage areas will be 100% smoke-free. Some guests were finding loop holes in the policies, like walking around eating and drinking so they wouldn’t have to wear a mask, since that is allowed. They have closed that loop hole and now guests must eat and drink in place, while being socially distant. They have also tightened the types of masks that they accept. No bandanas or neck gaiters are allowed. PhotoPass photos taken with guests not wearing a mask are not available. – https://www.micechat.com/264693-disneyland-update-its-beginning-to-look-a-lot-like-progress/ All active Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders who have paid for their Passports in full will automatically have their Passport expiration date extended due to theme park closures to provide additional access opportunities at the end of the Passport term. The new expiration date will be reflected on the Annual Passholder’s Passport account prior to the reopening of the theme parks. As an alternative, and in lieu of an extension of their Passports, Passholders who have paid in full may choose to receive a partial refund for the theme park closure period. To request this alternative option, we ask that you contact Annual Passport Member Services at (714) 781-4567. We do anticipate heavy call volume and appreciate your patience as we answer all inquiries. Your Annual Passport should show a new date once the extension period has been determined. Please keep checking our updates as we will have more information to share soon. Discussion Topic: Our Merch Likes

Exit Through the Gift Shop. While also the name of a 2010 documentary by artist Banksy, this concept has become kind of a joke among critics and fans alike in the location-based entertainment industry. Even Disney attractions themselves have referenced this concept, with a joke on the World Famous Jungle Cruise stating that floating through a temple could lead to danger or adventure, but probably leads to a gift shop. You might think from all this talk that this is just the way of things in the industry, that every attraction ends with the ability to buy all the merchandise in the world, but in reality, this is an exception to the rule. Even at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, only 6 of the 37 listed attractions actually exit through a gift shop, and one of those, Fantasy Faire, is really more of a side opportunity than a forced walkthrough. While it has become a joke, the concept of finishing an experience with a shop is actually a brilliant design move and, I would argue, contributes to the overall Guest experience. Attractions are designed to excite or inspire their Guests. The very best attractions inherently create a call to action to their Guests to remember or relive their experience. What better way to reinforce this call than through specific merchandise or keepsakes that reinforce those memories, giving the Guests something tangible with which to relive their adventure. And it’s not just theme and amusement parks. Museums, Zoos, Aquariums, and Historical Sites all rely on the income and inherent guerrilla marketing that comes with the sale of souvenirs. Traveling exhibits, such as the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit most recently at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science features its own merchandise location for the exhibit itself, in addition to the museum shop. This popup shop features recreations of many of Leonardo’s stunning inventions along with the tools and resources that would allow visitors, especially children, to continue exploring their own inherent ingenuity in the same way Leonardo did. Sure, the exhibition relies on the income generated by this location, but it also provides a channel for Guests to take their enthusiasm and that deeper “call to action” beyond the walls of the museum to their own lives. The experience fosters a curiosity, and the merchandise helps it grow, it’s all part of the Total Guest Experience. So while in this day and age, when gift shops and merchandise opportunities may be seen as “shameless” cash grabs or just another way to empty Guest wallets, I would posit that Guests would be keenly aware of a lack of this design and business choice. Far be it from a capitalistic cliche, exiting through the gift shop is really addressing Guest and business needs in a most simplistic and effective way. Now of course, if done in an obnoxious and detrimental way, it could certainly negatively impact the perception of an experience, but that holds true for any segment of the designed environment. A poorly designed queue, lack of shade in a tropical environment, lack of benches, inefficient HVAC, all can contribute negatively to the overall attraction experience, but at the end of the day, I dare say in most circumstances, the Total Guest Experience is enhanced by encouraging visitors to “exit through the gift shop”. How do you feel about this concept? Do you agree with my assessment or do you think I’m completely off base? Either way, let us know at connect@mainentrancecast.com.

This week we are back at the Magic Kingdom for a fun excursion on the World Famous Jungle Cruise. What is that you say? We have already been on the Jungle Cruise? This is true, however this time we are on the Jungle Cruise at night. One of the best things about the Disney parks is that at night it is a brand new park and adventure, so here we enjoy a different ride on the Jungle Cruise at night.

This video is a fun and exciting trip on the World Famous Jungle Cruise attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. This video was recorded in preparation for Patricks show which would focus on the Jungle Cruise, and was recorded on a rainy day in January 2007. Videography by Paul Barrie, and our skipper is the fabulous "JACK the SKIPPER!" Jack is one of the best JC skippers I have heard in a long time. His brand of dry humor and his ability to speak CLEARLY into the mic make this trip through the jungle one for the record books.
