Episode 50! I’ve been sitting on this one for a while waiting for the opportune time to return it to the airwaves. That time has arrived! Norm Nathan’s Vault of Silliness presents a Dumb Birthday Game from August 10th, 1992. I will title this: A Gem of Foolish Hilarity EVERY time I listen to this, I laugh just as hard. If ever there was an example of Norm’s motto: “Leave this world a little sillier than you found it” it’s this one. Our esteemed panel is a s follows: Paul – the school teacher from Malden Little Mike from Chelmsford – 13 years old and only 5” tall. Dominic from RI (he can’t help it he has to live someplace) Chris from PA who is expecting twins! I’m producing and in studio Russ Gannon in Traffic Featured Birthdays: Jimmy Dean Eddie Fisher Patti Austin Roseanna Arquette Rhonda Flemming Ian Andersen And then some dates in history to round out the game: What year was Herbert Clark Hoover born? And Leo Daft opened America’s first commercially operated electric streetcar in Baltimore. The whole crew really goes off the rails, especially Norm! Other high lights include: Commercials and promos: Dave Maynard – Cruise Night! Caitlyn Travel/Wanderlust Travel Club WBZ’s Monday Night Quarterback with Scott Wahle The Birthday-gate Scandal reignites like a trick candle. There’s one of the DBG excuses that drove Norm crazy. Tiny Mike seems to have written a whole stand-up routine! Norm has been delinquent in sending out prizes. We are treated to guest appearances by Jack Benny, Lionel Barrymore Jimmy Stewart AND Arthur Godfrey. We contemplate a philosophical statement so deep that we have to embroidered it on our doillies. And Norm has an epiphany that if management fired him, he’d have no defense. Even the Union would abandon him after this show. Norm Nathan’s Vault of Silliness brings a whole new dimension to broadcasting…again. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 11. Activities and events from Friday, July 19 through Thursday, August 1 Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 11, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday, July 19 through Thursday, August 1. There are many activities and events in the Sandwich Weekly Podcast and I’m always looking for new ways to make it easier for you to find what you’re interested in. If you’re using a podcast player that supports chapter markers such as, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or the Apple Podcast app, you can skip directly to any day in the audio file. This, unfortunately, isn’t a feature that’s available on the podcasts web page. On the podcast web page, you can scroll down the show notes to look for particular days of activities. You can also use the standard search keys (ctrl-f on pc or cmd-f on Mac) to enter your search terms. This week I introduced a new feature that will, hopefully, make the show notes easier to navigate. At the top of the show notes there are shortcuts to go directly to a particular day in the notes. This way you won’t need to scroll down the list to find the day in which you are interested. Here’s the schedule of activities and events for the next two weeks… Friday July 19 Saturday July 20 Monday July 22 Tuesday July 23 Wednesday July 24 Thursday July 25 Friday July 26 Saturday July 27 Sunday July 28 Monday July 29 Tuesday July 30 Wednesday July 31 Thursday August 1 Friday July 19 Science Club - 4–4:45pm Friday at the Sandwich Public Library. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 10. Activities and events from Friday July 12 through Thursday July 25 Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 10, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday July 12 through Thursday July 25. On the podcast web page you can scroll down the show notes to look for particular days of activities. Here’s the schedule of activities and events for the next two weeks… Friday July 12 Saturday July 13 Sunday July14 Monday July 15 Tuesday July 16 Wednesday July 17 Thursday July 18 Friday July 19 Saturday July 20 Monday July 22 Tuesday July 23 Wednesday July 24 Thursday July 25 Friday July 12 Computer Class – Computer Basics - 10:30 – noon, Friday at the Sandwich Public Library. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 9. Activities and events from Friday July 5 through Thursday July 18 Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 9, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday July 5 through Thursday July 18. On the podcast web page you can scroll down the show notes to look for particular days of activities. Here’s the schedule of activities and events for the next two weeks… Friday July 5 Saturday July 6 Sunday July 7 Monday July 8 Tuesday July 9 Wednesday July 10 Thursday July 11 Friday July 12 Saturday July 13 Sunday July14 Monday July 15 Tuesday July 16 Wednesday July 17 Thursday July 18 Friday July 5 American Legion Fish Fry- 5 to 7:30 pm Friday at the Sheridan American Legion Post 729. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 7. Activities and events from Friday June 21 through Thursday July 4 Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 7, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday June 21 through Thursday July 4. And now, this weeks tidbit of Sandwich history… It’s not commonly known, the Sandwich area played an instrumental role in the Underground Railroad. In case your knowledge of 19th century American History is a bit weak, the Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early to mid–1800s. It was used by African-American slaves to escape into free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and others who were sympathetic to their cause. The William Eddy home on Somonauk Creek was one of the underground stations (or safe houses), as were the Beveridge home in Somonauk and the Stewards’ home in Plano. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 5. Activities and events from Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 5, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Before I begin, I would like to thank all the listeners who have taken the time to visit and like the podcasts Facebook page and those who have sent some wonderful comments. Remember that this podcast is for you and if you have any suggestions for improvement, please send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. A special thanks to Geoff Penman who corrected the historical tidbit from last weeks episode. If you remember, I said that Davis Lake extended from Veterans Memorial Park to, what is now, Gletty Road. I didn’t believe that was possible since the buildings on Main Street existed prior to Davis lake being drained. I mistakenly thought that the Park referred to Veterans Park which is across from City Hall. Actually the lake extended from Sandwich Memorial Park to Gletty Road. Sandwich Memorial Park lies west of the YMCA and has an entrance on Water Street. This weeks tidbit of Sandwich history is about what once was an old train car and is now the Bull Moose Bar and Grille. The train car is a former Pullman Palace car that was built in 1893, at a cost of $25,000, and initially shown at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago later that year. It was placed into service by the Burlington (now the Burlington Northern Sante Fe) railroad and was part of their special “Pride of Burlington” train. In 1904, the train car was given to President Teddy Roosevelt to use during his presidential campaign and returned to the Burlington railway after Roosevelt was elected. The train car was put back into use for another presidential election in 1908 as William Howard Taft’s official transportation carriage. Taft won the election. During the next election, Roosevelt ran on his own Progressive Party (or “Bull Moose” Party) ticket Figuring the train car was good luck since it was used by the last two winners of Presidential elections, he got the car from the Burlington railway and used it to criss-cross the country during his campaign. Well, Teddy Roosevelt lost that election to Woodrow Wilson and the train car was returned to the railroad. The train car continued on the Burlington line until it was retired in the early 1930’s. In 1934, Sandwich resident Henry Tattersal bought the train car for $75 dollars and moved it from California to Sandwich, placing it on the southwest corner of Main and Church Streets. He redesigned the train car as a diner and opened it later that year and called it “The Diner”. In 1935, a man by the name of Wright bought the diner and moved it across the street to its present day location next to a house and renamed it “Wright’s Diner”. The train car diner has gone through a number of owners and name changes over the years, eventually incorporating the house into part of the restaurant It has been known as Paul’s Diner, Cucina Plata, Kelly’s Pub and the American Grill. The diner closed in 2008 and sat vacant for a couple years. That’s when Ron and Sue came into the picture. Ron and Sue bought the train car and house and painstakingly restored the inside building and car, as well as spruced up the outside that had deteriorated over time. Having had an antique business for over 25 years, Sue Saballus used her antique connections to find lighting fixtures and decorations to restore the train car to its original splendor when Teddy Roosevelt used it a century before. They even restored the original leaded glass windows along the top of the railcar. The Sandwich Weekly podcast, covering local activities and events for the period May 24th through June 6th. Here’s a little tidbit of Sandwich history thanks another podcast listener. Did you know that there once was a lake, Lake Davis, which stretched from Veterans Memorial Park to what is now Gletty Road. The lake covered approximately 100 acres, but was drained in 1912–1913 by installing tiles routing the water east to the Little Rock Creek. This was possible because Sandwich was built on a natural gradation due to a geological fault line known as the Sandwich Fault, so the city stands on a hillside. The southeast corner of the city is the lowest spot, roughly near the Harvey Creek Preserve, as well as near Little Rock Creek. It was drained because it was considered a “dead” lake. The lake didn’t have a sand beach, but was used for boating, fishing, swimming, hunting, and trapping. If you have some little-known history about Sandwich, send it to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. I’ll read it on a future podcast and give you full bragging rights. I have some good news, you may remember in episode one that I made a reference to chapters. Well, through lots of trial and error, I was able to get chapters implemented. If your podcast player supports chapters you can now jump directly to any day in the audio file by selecting that day in the chapters list. Two excellent podcast players that support chapters are Overcast for Apple devices, and Pocket Casts for both Apple and Android devices. The Sandwich Weekly podcast, covering local avtivities and events for the period May 17 through May 30. Here’s a little tidbit of Sandwich history thanks a podcast listener. You may, or may not, know that Sandwich was established around a planned railroad stop built on land given to the railroad by Almon Cage. Mr. Cage originally named the city Almon, but then decided to change the name to Newark Station. The railroad had only a flag stop at first, but when “Long John” Wentworth, a Congressman and future mayor of Chicago, got involved, then the railroad established a full stop in the town. At the time the name of the town was Newark Station and it became confused with it’s nearby southern neighbor, the town of Newark. Since Representative Wentworth had played a large role in convincing the railroad to have a full stop in the town, he was given the honor of naming the town. The Congressman selected the name Sandwich after the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in which he was raised. Interestingly, an ancestor of Wentworth, Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, established the town of Sandwich New Hampshire in 1763 naming it in honor of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, said to be the inventor of the sandwich. One of “Long John” Wentworth’s greatest, and often overlooked, accomplishments when he was a congressman, was to push for the border between Wisconsin and Illinois as it currently exists. There was a big push to have the Wisconsin border established at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, bringing the border to the southern edge of DeKalb county. This would have meant that Illinois would have no access to the lake, and Sandwich would lie in two states. If you have some little-known history about Sandwich, send it to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. I’ll read it on a future podcast and give you full bragging rights.   The Sandwich Weekly podcast, episode 2, activities and events from May 12 to May 23 Hello, this is the Sandwich Weekly podcast. I’m your host Robert and I’ve prepared a list of activities and events happening in and around Sandwich over the next two weeks. just a reminder that everything I mention in this podcast, as well as contact information, can be found in the show notes. You can view the show notes on your podcast player or on the web at sandwichweekly.com. Good news, the Sandwich Weekly podcast has been approved by Spotify. If you subscribe to Spotify you can listen to the podcast using the Spotify app or web player. Before I get to the event calendar I thought it would be fun to pass along a little-known historical fact about the city of Sandwich. Did you know that Bob Hope once headlined a benefit show at the Sandwich airport? The show was sponsored by Friends of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Aurora to raise funds to purchase a small plane for Father Tony Gendusa who was a missionary in New Guinea. The event also included a two-hour air show starring Jerrie Mack, the first woman to fly around the world solo in a single-engine plane. The show was emceed by WGN’s Eddie Hubbard. There were between 5,000 and 10,000 people in attendance that day. That’s pretty impressive when you find out that the date of the event was July 20, 1969 - the same day that the Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon. In fact, Bob Hope delayed his departure from Sandwich to watch the moon landing in the airport's administration building. If you have some little known historical facts about Sandwich, send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com and I’ll read them on an upcoming show (of course I’ll give you credit!)
