Today in 1882, the birthday of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He wound up being America's longest serving president, but at one point FDR had a very different destiny in mind for himself: he wanted to write screenplays for movies. Plus: we mark the birthday in 1951 of musician Phil Collins with a story of a statue that unintentionally looked just like him. This wraps up Halloween 2022, there were quite a few laughs in this episode. But we ended on a freaky note, this year for Halloween we touched on shows/specials/movies, we talked about Haunted/Cursed Movie Sets, we went through 2 sentence Horror Stories, and in this one we end with the actual audio clips of exorcisms. We wish you a safe and Happy Halloween, and don't be afraid to get a LITTLE spooked out, Tis the season!!!
Want to learn how to write movies? This book is about writing movies! We're joined by Danny Mac, who also writes movies. Normally these descriptions have clever jokes, but it's late on a Sunday night, and I'm beginning to suspect you don't read these descriptions, do you? I could probably write whatever I want here, couldn't I? I could probably confess something real dark here, right? Hahahaha. But could I?On the night of August 12, 2017, at 4 a.m., I awoke during a camping trip at Willow Lake to find myself sleepwalking through dense woods. It took me nearly half an hour to relocate the campsite, at which point I discovered blood on the fender of my car and a patch of dirt that seemed to have been freshly dug and reburied. I was unable to account for the past 6 hours. This episode of Editing Writing consists of an interview I did with Ali Khamseh. He describes himself on a website as "a bearded nerd from Iran in his mid 20's, with a particular interest in the motion pictures as a hobby, career and general life. Has a very high opinion of Jeremy Irons, adores Westerns and Musicals and loves movies from the 1960s." I can add to that that he has an extremely detailed knowledge of film from around the world, and was also very articulate and thoughtful about both art forms.See his YouTube channel here.

Suzanne begins with the announcement of a new “Music” category at www.WhereHollywoodHides.com, and—while reminding us she’s sooo much younger than Bob—lays claim to being a lifelong Beatles fan. For his part, Bob admits that he’s just “a rock-and-roll kind of guy” and would’ve bet the farm that I Want to Hold Your Hand would never make the charts. So much for his musical tastes... The episode moves on to what Bob himself describes as his “greatest career failure” while under contract to Aaron Spelling Productions writing and producing Dark Mansions for ABC-TV. It’s a tale of classic Hollywood casting politics as Bob sets the record straight as to exactly why former movie queen Loretta Young never got the part in the film that eventually went to Oscar winner Joan Fontaine. Bob reveals the nature of production and budgets in Spelling’s 1980s-era Hollywood, as well as the rationale (follow the money!) for the excessive proliferation of producer credits seen on Dark Mansions. With a tip of the hat to the talents of Linda Purl, Michael York, Melissa Sue Anderson, Nicollette Sheridan, and director Jerry London, Bob’s confidence in the show never prepared him for the horrible results of an evening of sneak-preview audience testing. It’s the story of how a “hit movie” with the promise of becoming a network television series became an instant embarrassment for all... as well as an immediate career bump for the fool who wrote it (that’d be Bob). Going from “Golden Boy” to “Bob who?”, and proving the truth of when you’re hot, your hot, and when you’re not...you’re not, this episode is a good illustration of the pitfalls to be found on the Hollywood career path for any writer, actor, producer, or director.
Sketch comedians and screenwriters Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, authors of Writing Movies for Fun and Profit, on the very practical secrets to their success.
