Off the charts on intelligence by paper I think. I have a hard time following him on many details I am familiar with. a6. Dooley has one hell of a story and a great friend. I can be there as a back up or just to keep Dooley from running into rabbit holes. LOL7. Dooley, Just be yourself as that's what the audience wants. Send us a textJoin us for an enlightening conversation with Dr. Mitch Maki, President of the Go For Broke National Education Center, as we uncover the enduring legacy of Japanese American veterans from World War II. Discover the powerful story behind the phrase "Go For Broke" and how it became the rallying cry for the brave 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team. These soldiers, who faced fierce battles abroad and prejudice at home, became the most decorated unit of their size in U.S. military history. Dr. Maki shares his lifelong passion for preserving their stories, driven by his own childhood experiences in Los Angeles. We journey through America's past mistakes, examining the internment of Japanese Americans and its painful legacy. Reflecting on the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, we discuss how acknowledging these injustices can inform our approach to contemporary issues of race and political leadership. There's a yearning for the bipartisan cooperation once exemplified by leaders like Tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan, and we explore how their spirit of unity can guide us in today's polarized world. By learning from history, we aim to foster a more cohesive society. This episode also highlights the innovative ways the Go For Broke organization inspires civic engagement among young Americans. Through storytelling initiatives like the Torchbearers program and the Go For Broke Journalism Institute, students connect historical events with modern-day issues, cultivating pride and a commitment to positive change. From fashion collaborations to journalism projects, we showcase the transformative power of these narratives in nurturing a deeper understanding of loyalty, sacrifice, and civic duty across generations.

In this episode, Ralph Renzulli interviews Joe Mastrocco, a St. Johnsville resident and WWII Veteran who served two years in the Navy at Pearl Harbor. Before COVID, Renzulli had started a series of interviews with Little Falls Vietnam Veterans. The show was produced by The Creative Outpost and was filmed at the Little Falls Library in the China room. Thirteen episodes were completed before the program was shuttered. Initially, it was only Little Falls Vets, but he thought if someone was willing to do it, why not Ilion, Mohawk, Herkimer, Dolgeville, Fort Plain, or Canajoharie? "Anyone willing to do it," he stated. Renzulli says he intends to expand it to any Veteran - from World War II through Afghanistan. "I don't know how many people we have around here who have participated in those wars, but there have to be quite a few." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/studio25/support

Dick Miller, a 97-year-old WWII veteran, joins Lisa to talk about his stories and how he was chosen to lead the upcoming Aurora Memorial Day parade
“We had Japanese faces but American hearts.” So says our special guest Yoshio Nakamura, a Japanese-American born in California. Yoshio experienced first-hand the upheaval of World War II when Japanese-Americans were classified as enemy aliens. He endured internment at Tulare Racetrack and Gila River Camp, facing humiliation and loss of freedom. Despite the injustice, he demonstrated loyalty to the U.S. by joining the Army, serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Nakamura participated in key battles in Europe, contributing to the unit's status as the most decorated in U.S. military history. After the war, he pursued education and became an art teacher. Despite hardships, Nakamura maintains a positive outlook on life. Also joining us is Dr. Mitchell T. Maki is the President and CEO of the Go For Broke National Education Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy and lessons of the Nisei (a person born in the US whose parents were immigrants from Japan) World War II veterans. The mission of GO FOR BROKE is to educate and inspire character and equality through the virtue and valor of our World War II American veterans of Japanese ancestry. Dr. Maki is also the lead author of the award-winning book, Achieving the Impossible Dream: How Japanese Americans Obtained Redress, a detailed case study of the 1988 Civil Liberties Act. Nearly fifty years after being incarcerated by their own government, Japanese American concentration camp survivors succeeded in obtaining redress for the personal humiliation, family dislocation, and economic ruin caused by their ordeal. An inspiring story of wrongs made right as well as a practical guide to getting legislation through Congress, Achieving the Impossible Dream documents the redress movement from its earliest roots during World War II, the formal introduction of the idea in the 1970s, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, the judicial battles during the 1980s, and the lobbying of the legislative and executive branches in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2000, the book received the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award which is given to books addressing bigotry and human rights in North America. Dr. Maki has held the positions of acting Provost and Vice president of Academic Affairs, Vice Provost of Student Academic Success, dean of the Colleges of Professional Studies and Health and Human Services (CSUDH), acting dean of the College of Health and Human Services at CSU Los Angeles and assistant professor in the Department of Social Welfare at UCLA. As acting Provost, Dr. Maki provided academic and strategic leadership for CSUDH's five academic colleges which served over fifteen thousand students. What a wild day! The sky this morning was crazy-looking! Talked about the weather in our area to start the show, and we talked about some of the flooding in Brazil & TX. Recapped last night's NHL & NBA playoff action, and heard about the jockey from the Kentucky Derby that might be in a bit of trouble! We let you know what's new on New Release Tuesday and what's on TV tonight, which led Brian to go down a rabbit hole about Paris Hilton & these boot camps that abduct children. In case you were unaware, today is "National Teacher Appreciation Day", and we talked about some of the teachers that influenced us when we were in school. Had a couple of uplifting stories about a WWII Veteran who finally got his diploma, and a couple who won a brand new truck, but donated it to a kid who needed it more than they did. There was a few interesting food stories this morning, including people eating lemons WHOLE, a woman who likes pickles in her Dr. Pepper, and a guy who thinks he figured out the best way to cut a sandwich. Did you hear about Snoop Dogg??? He is apparently going to be sponsoring the Arizona Bowl this year. And unless you live under a rock, you've seen the memes & videos about a man vs. a bear in the woods. We discussed it on the show this morning. We talked to Grant Bilse from the Wisco Sports Show about the current state of the Brewers. And during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about the most boring video of all time, a wrongful traffic stop in #Florida, a woman who was stealing from stores by using the self-checkout lanes, an alligator that was causing an issue at a Starbucks, a hippo that devoured a boat, a zebra that was finally captured after being on the loose for a week, a bunch of dogs that got painted up like pandas, and a guy who didn't poop for three months.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
One of our greatest natural treasures are our own people. People we know and love. Some of those people have lived extraordinary lives and done heroic things to ensure the freedoms we and others have now. Today Patty welcomes an amazing young person, Tyler Boland to the show, who started a project called 'Keeping History Alive' aiming to interview World War II veterans to preserve their stories. His interest was sparked by his great grandfather's WWII memorabilia and has since grown into a mission to capture as many veterans' stories as possible. With the dwindling number of WWII veterans sadly becoming a reality, Tyler's project has gained national attention, leading him to plan more interviews and a YouTube channel to share these important narratives. When Tyler Boland set out to preserve the stories of World War II heroes like his great-grandfather, he found an incredible friend in 99-year-old veteran, Matt Gutman. Their bond takes center stage as Matt, shares memories of his service, steering a Higgins boat through enemy fire. Feel the weight of history as Matt's voice bridges the years, bringing to life tales of survival and duty that are as much a part of him as the air he breathes. His anecdotes provide a candid look into the sacrifices made and the daring spirit of those who served.Venture into the heart of warfare with Matt's riveting first-hand account of his voluntary enlistment in the Navy and the daring operations as a Higgins boat driver during the most pivotal moments of the Pacific theater. The courage in his blood, a gift from his immigrant parents, led him to face perilous beach landings and a harrowing night in a foxhole, clutching only a knife and a grenade. The history that Matt carries is made tangible through a samurai sword, an heirloom echoing the legacy of conflict and the honor of military service that we are given a rare chance to explore. With every story recounted, gratitude for the bravery of veterans like Matt Gutman resonates deeply. Acknowledging the remarkable lives of these individuals extends beyond mere appreciation; it's a celebration of their indelible mark on our world. As we conclude, we're reminded that the wisdom and valor shared by veterans remain as timeless as the memories they entrust to us. Join us for more unforgettable narratives that continue to shape our present and enlighten our future. #WorldWarII #veterans #mattgutman #tylerboland #greatestgeneration"Everyone should listen to this episode... we owe such a great depth of gratitude to our Veterans. In this special episode, our guest is Mr. William Atkinson "Mr. Bill". His father was an airman in WWII serving in a B-24 Bomber Crew. Mr. Bill co-wrote a book with his father to recount his incredible story. In this episode Bill shares his story and the impact his father had on him. Below is a brief description of the book: James C. Atkinson began life the descendant of an impoverished farming family in rural east-central Mississippi. While a high school senior, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and, like so many young men of his generation, left his home to fight for his country in WWII. After a year of rigorous training, he was qualified as a Radio Operator/Gunner on a B-24 bomber, and what began as the adventure of a lifetime for Sgt. Atkinson, ended in horror and tragedy in the war-torn skies over Ploesti, Romania. Though this is Dr. Atkinson's personal story, it is not unique. Rather, it is representative of the stories of legions of young men from the Greatest Generation who would face the challenge of rebuilding their lives after rising from the ashes of the most destructive war in history. Andrew Biggio was excited to show his neighbor, a WWII veteran, the M1 Garand rifle he had recently purchased. The weapon was the most common rifle used in WWII, and Biggio thought his elderly neighbor would appreciate holding the gun. “When I put that rifle into his hands and he raised it into his shoulder and started waving it around the room and pointing and smiling, and we talked about the Battle of Okinawa for like three hours,” Biggio, a Marine veteran himself, recounts. Biggio was in awe of the stories his elderly neighbor had just shared with him. The rifle had not only triggered memories in the veteran's mind, but acted like a microphone, propelling the man to describe his war experiences in detail. Biggio asked his neighbor to sign the rifle becasue he wanted to remember the stories he had just been told, and this gave Biggio the idea to find other WWII veterans and ask them to sign the M1 Garand rifle. Today, “I have 320 names on that rifle,” Biggio says. “You can't even see the wooden stalk. The whole rifle's full of white ink names.” But the majority of the soldiers who have held the rifle have done much more than signed it, they described their war stories in detail while grasping the weapon, stories which Biggio has compiled into two book. His first book, “The Rifle: Combat Stories from America's Last WWII Veterans, Told Through an M1 Garand,” was released in 2021 but could not hold all veteran stories. In September, Biggio released the project's second edition, “The Rifle 2: Back to the Battlefield.” Biggio joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to share some of the stories of the WWII veterans he has had the privilege of meeting and writing about.
