The Berlin Zoo has announced that its 11-year-old female giant panda Meng Meng is pregnant again with twins and, if everything goes well, could give birth by the end of the month.德国柏林动物园当地时间8月13日宣布,11岁的旅德大熊猫“梦梦”再次怀上双胞胎,如果一切顺利的话,大熊猫双胞胎预计将于8月底出生。The announcement was made on Monday after zoo authorities conducted an ultrasound examination over the weekend that showed the developing fetuses. Giant panda experts from China arrived in Berlin on Sunday to assist with preparations for the ultrasound.柏林动物园于周末对“梦梦”进行了超声波检查,检查结果显示胎儿正在发育。中国专家也已赶到柏林,为后续工作提供支持。Meng Meng was artificially inseminated in March. According to the zoo, female giant pandas are only fertile for approximately 72 hours each year.“梦梦”于三月进行了人工授精。据动物园介绍,雌性大熊猫每年的受孕时间为大约72小时。"One heartbeat could initially be made out on the ultrasound equipment, and shortly thereafter a second as well," the zoo announcement said, adding that the fetuses are now 2.5 centimeters long, but will grow significantly by the end of the month.“最初超声扫描检测到一个胎儿的心跳,不久后又发现了另一个。”动物园表示目前两个胎儿身长约2.5厘米,但到本月底将继续增长。Gestation generally takes three to six months, but the zoo said that dormancy—a period of up to several months in giant pandas during which an egg remains suspended in the mother's uterus and does not continue to develop—was the reason for the delay in confirming Meng Meng's pregnancy.大熊猫妊娠通常需要三到六个月,但动物园表示,大熊猫休眠状态(此期间卵子悬浮在母亲的子宫中,不会继续发育)是“梦梦”前几次孕检全都没有发现的原因。Zoo veterinarian Franziska Sutter told media that the pregnancy was still at a risky phase.园方兽医弗朗齐丝卡·祖特尔说告诉媒体,“梦梦”怀孕期间仍处于危险阶段。"Amid all the enthusiasm, we have to realize that this is a very early stage of the pregnancy and that a so-called resorption, or death, of the embryo is still possible at this stage," she said.她表示:“尽管大家都很兴奋,但我们也必须意识到,胎儿仍然有死亡的可能。”If everything goes smoothly, the cubs will be the first in five years to be born at the Berlin Zoo after Meng Meng gave birth to twin cubs, Pit and Paule, in August 2019. Did you know that, according to the National Institute of Aging, if we stretched out our arteries, veins, and capillaries as adults, they would measure around 100,000 miles? This means that our blood vessels could circle the globe four times, given that the earth's circumference is about 25,000 miles! The human vasculature is truly an intricate system that literally supplies us with blood (with veins circulating around 2,000 gallons to all body organs every day) - with life. It is no surprise that pathologies and disease processes that involve our vasculature can result in life-threatening effects, like heart attacks and strokes from coronary vascular and cerebrovascular disease, respectively. However, diseases of the vasculature can also result in effects that can simply alter one's quality of life, such as limb loss from critical limb ischemia due to peripheral arterial disease, varicose veins from peripheral venous insufficiency, lymphedema from lymphatic diseases, the need for hemodialysis due to chronic kidney disease secondary to renal artery stenosis, erectile dysfunction from genitourinary vascular diseases, and much more. We are joined today by fifth-year Integrated Vascular Surgery resident physician Dr. Yang Yang. She received her BS in Biochemistry and Neuroscience from Drew University, MD from Drexel University College Of Medicine, and is currently completing her Vascular Surgery residency at MedStar Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University Hospital. China's top political adviser, Wang Huning, called on Monday for the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to make full use of its role as a specialized advisory body, focusing on providing wisdom for the country's modernization goals.Wang, chairman of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, made the remarks while delivering a work report to around 2,100 national political advisers at the opening of the second session of the 14th National Committee of the CPPCC in Beijing, raising the curtain on this year's two sessions, China's biggest annual political event.President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and other Chinese leaders attended the opening meeting, held at the Great Hall of the People. At the meeting, the agenda for the session was reviewed and approved. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the CPPCC, and it is a crucial year for achieving the goals of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25).Wang said that upholding the leadership of the CPC has always been the fundamental political principle of the CPPCC since the political advisory body was founded, and it remains the fundamental guarantee for the development and progress of its cause. He stressed the need for the CPPCC to act as a specialized consultative body, closely focusing on the major decisions and initiatives of the CPC Central Committee, national strategic needs and significant practical issues in its advisory role."The CPPCC should leverage its group advantages, conduct extensive investigations and research, and gain a deep understanding of the vivid experiences created in practice, the desires and demands of the people, as well as the difficulties and obstacles in policy implementation," he said.Over the past 12 months, the CPPCC National Committee conducted 94 consultations for advisers and officials to exchange ideas.Wang also emphasized the role of the CPPCC in external exchanges and in promoting the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind, telling China's stories and spreading the country's voice to the world. After listening to the report, Zhang Yi, a national political adviser and a lawyer from Shanghai, said, "I was greatly encouraged, especially by the call for us advisers to provide suggestions in line with the central tasks of the Party and the country and fulfill our duties for the people."Zhang said that this year's conference is crucial for achieving the goals set in the 14th Five-Year Plan, particularly in relation to China's economic development and legal construction. He said that he would make suggestions regarding the effective regulation of artificial intelligence through legislation, after conducting research over the past year.Tsoi Wing-sing, a national political adviser from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said that in-depth research is crucial in formulating proposals, and this year he would propose a way to leverage Hong Kong's advantages in promoting China's experience in green finance on the global stage.Reporter: Zhang Yi, Yang Yang

Taiwan's politics have long been defined by tensions with China, which claims the island as its own. Over the past several years, China has stepped up military exercises and Taiwanese leaders have responded by asserting the island's self-rule — a tension that shows little sign of easing with the weekend's election of current vice president Lai Ching-te to the presidency. Across Taiwan, individuals are formulating their own responses to the specter of conflict. Our previous Big Take episode showed one young military veteran's determination to defend Taiwan set him on a tragic course to Ukraine. In this episode, Bloomberg reporters Wan Chien-Hua and Yang Yang explore those who are plotting flights to safety. Some attend civil defense fairs, which teach where to shelter and drill kids on five ways to protect from missile strikes (plug ears; open mouth). Others accumulate passports to foreign countries that may promise more peaceful lives.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Watching footage of Russian attacks on Ukraine, Jonathan Tseng thought: That could happen here, too. So from his home in Taiwan, Jonathan — Tseng Sheng-Guang in Chinese — resolved to take up arms against Russia. He left his wife, son and his beseeching mother in June 2022 to join the ranks of foreign fighters in Ukraine. His decision mirrored his own fears about unwelcome aggression on Taiwan, should China move beyond decades of warnings and threats, and into open conflict, against the island it claims as its own. Bloomberg reporter Yang Yang spent several months looking for and talking to Jonathan's family, friends and fellow soldiers in Ukraine, in order to understand more about what drove a young Taiwanese man to battle a neighboring aggressor, and what happened to him there. In YI YI, the sudden illness of the matriarch in a three-generation household sends the lives of its inhabitants spiraling. In the emotional chaos, NJ, his wife Min Min, his daughter Ting Ting, and his son Yang Yang find themselves reckoning with the end of a generation and at the crossroads of many versions of themselves. In our discussion of director Edward Yang's final film, we discuss the big ideas he hints at in everyday scenes: generational baggage and a struggle to move forward; the struggle to maintain identity amid changing circumstances; and the inability to control the world's perceptions of you while you figure out who you want to be. - Get tickets to EDWARD YANG, GIANT OF TAIWANESE CINEMA (March 2023 at the Trylon): https://www.trylon.org/films/category/edward-yang-giant-of-taiwanese-cinema/ Follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/trylovepodcast and email us at trylovepodcast@gmail.com to get in touch! There's evidence the Federal Reserve may have finally gained the upper hand in its war against inflation, a potential relief not only for US investors but also real estate agents 8,000 miles away in Hong Kong. The central bank's year-long rate-hike campaign has stymied America's housing market as well as that of the Asian financial hub, and people on both continents will be glad to see the back of it. This week, we explore how global challenges like inflation, rising interest rates and worker shortages are moving markets in three continents. First, Chief US Economist Anna Wong tells host Stephanie Flanders that, while inflation appears to be slowing in the US, it's too early to tell if the Fed has won the war. Too many risks remain in the global economy, including Russia cutting its oil production or China's reopening sending commodities prices soaring. What appears more clear, Wong says, is that someone may have gotten a heads-up on this week's surprising US inflation report. A minute before the Consumer Price Index numbers went public, someone traded heavily on Treasury futures. "So, by being a bit early, before everybody gets the same data, somebody is making a lot of money with that move,'' she says. Next, we travel to Hong Kong, home to one of the world's priciest property markets. Reporter Enda Curran and producer Yang Yang visit a 33rd-floor apartment that just sold for $3.2 million -- a relative bargain for a unit with a view of the famous Happy Valley Racecourse. In a better market, it might have fetched almost 10% more, the unit's real estate agent said. While China's restrictive "Covid zero" policy may be partly to blame, so too is US monetary policy. Since Hong Kong's currency is linked to the US dollar, Fed rate hikes ricochet across the city's system. And just as US housing prices are cooling off, economists say prices here could fall 30% from their peak. Finally, reporter Alessandra Migliaccio shares how Italy's legendary fashion companies are struggling to persuade young people to make 1,000-euro boots. The nation's youth unemployment rate is almost 24%, but roughly one in every two job postings in the luxury industry goes unfilled, according to trade group Altagamma. New Fendi Chief Executive Officer Serge Brunschwig is on something of a crusade to reverse the trend and get Italian youth to take up the craft. Still, it's no easy sell. In the words of one 18-year-old who's learning shoemaking, ``People say, `Oh, you make shoes? That's a bit useless.'"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Laura Leay interviews Yang Yang and Yepin Zhao of the University of California, Los Angeles about a dual-function p-type soft interlayer they developed to enhance efficiency of charge transfer in organic solar cells. With the introduction of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as the p-type material, the researchers are able to improve the efficiency of the device as well as change its optical distribution. One goal for such a device, they say, is to create a greenhouse that generates its own electricity. This study is published in ACS Nano (doi:10.1021/acsnano.1c09018).
Prof. Kelly Goldsmith, PhD is a brilliant researcher in the space of marketing and human behavior. She was the person who helped America understand why we were hoarding toilet paper at the start of the pandemic. It was her work to understand scarcity that helped people laugh at themselves in the midst of a stressful situation that was out of their control. In this episode of AMPstigator, we talk through what the research says about setting goals, finding happiness and living with perceived scarcity. Goldsmith explains how to overcome our human nature to better pursue a life with more meaning and purpose. PLUS! We delve into her 24-day stint on Survivor and her strategies for making it on and staying on the show. This episode is for you if: - You love witty fast-talkers with high IQ's (Kelly is GOLD for this) - You geek-out over research on human behavior - You want to better understand why you never reach your goals - You want to understand why you're afraid to take the leap and live with purpose - You want to hear about Kelly's stint on Survivor What's in this episode?Prof. Kelly Goldsmith, PhD brings her 20+ years of research into bite-sized and simple ideas that help you understand human behavior and better harness it to live a life with purpose. We start by discussing goals and why we usually don't meet them: we have unrealistic timelines, we don't make them quantifiable, and we just give up. We also talk about happiness - more specifically - why we don't try to be happy. Most people perceive happiness as something others can impact. When people perceive their level of happiness as something they can control, their overall measure of happiness improves. Goldsmith specializes in scarcity - which is how consumers respond to not having enough. In this episode of AMPstigator, she applies her research in scarcity to a person's fear of changing their lives or living with purpose. She also discusses her 24-day stint on Survivor Season 3. Her account of getting on the show is laugh-out-loud funny and what it taught her about herself and others.

"Visually, it looks quite simple and plain at first glance, while details such as the carving of clouds and snowflake patterns as well as the uneven casting on the surface have made it special." The medals will be produced by the Shanghai Mint, the same coinage company that manufactured the 2008 medals.这些奖牌将由2008年北京奥运会奖牌制作公司上海造币厂进行生产。Also unveiled at the ceremony were medal cases, made from bamboo, and the lanyards with Olympic rings and "Beijing 2022" embroidered on ribbons made from silk. Topics Discussed and Key Points:● How sports evolved in China over the past 1500 years● Why team sports have been slower in China● The role that the Chinese government plays in sports● What reform in the Chinese sports industry currently looks like● How the sports entertainment world looks in China with regards to live events● How foreign organizations can connect with sports fans in China● What is a “venue” in China?● What Greg expects for the 2022 Winter Olympics Episode Summary:Today on The Negotiation, we speak with Greg Turner, an industry leader in live sports and entertainment events and venue management in China. He is the Founder and Managing Director at High Performance, which manages and promotes events at Shantou University Sports Park. Greg himself led the development of the STU Sports Park; a $110 million project donated by the Li Ka Shing Foundation to Shantou University. Before Greg's involvement with STU, he served as the General Manager at XingYang Sports Culture Development, having been recruited directly by China's first-ever Winter Olympic Gold medalist Yang Yang to manage her investment into the development of ice sports in China. During his eight months working on the initiative, Greg led his team in building up various grassroots programs for ice hockey, figure skating and short-track speed skating, establishing Feiyang as Shanghai's premier public ice-skating facility.Listen in as Greg talks about the factors that shaped the development of the sports industry and culture in China, from their unique government-driven character to the Soviet-era roots that motivate the nation to dominate the global sports world.Greg then talks about the differences between sports cultures in the West and in China, what foreign organizations should focus on when looking to establish themselves in the local sports industry, and the reforms that the industry is currently undergoing. Finally, Greg explains how live events are organized and promoted in China as well as his thoughts on the 2022 Winter Olympics. Key Quotes:“Sports in China operates a lot different than what we're used to—it's very government-driven. Government policy lays the framework for how it's going to be developing. That dates back to 1918 when the first paper that Mao Zedong published was on the lack of personal fitness for Chinese people and how that was impacting their ability to build a strong nation.” “[China aims to have sports consumption] become one of the new pillars of the Chinese economy. They're shifting away from manufacturing and they're trying to have more of a balance between service and manufacturing—maybe more on the service side. Sports are seen as part of that basket of industries that are going to develop the national economy and help it keep growing.” “Sports, [for the Chinese] is just one piece of the entertainment diet that they have. If they have to choose between watching their favorite player or favorite team play a game or watching a movie with friends, it's actually a really difficult decision. If you add in dinner, they're probably going to choose the dinner first and foremost. So, sports doesn't have that same drive and passion that it has in the West.” “Doing business in China is kind of like boiling water: There's nothing going on for a long time then, all of a sudden, everything explodes. [...] I think sports is right on the cusp of boiling point.” “With everything going on in the world in China and in the U.S., one of the things that I take heart in is that sports is a great uniter. We've seen that in the past and I hope we can see that again as we go through the next few years.”
