Dr. Brian Lenzkes is an internal medicine doctor based in San Diego, who has focused much of his attention on clinical nutrition. After owning a medical practice with a group of physicians from 2003-2020, he launched LowCarbMD San Diego, a metabolic health and direct primary care practice in the summer of 2020. Dr. Lenzkes is co-host and founder of the popular LowCarbMD podcast, which has been downloaded more than 3 million times, and he is a professional speaker. He also recently launched Life’s Best Medicine, a weekly podcast that shines a light on stories about real people and events that instill feelings of hope, faith and love. Dr. Lenzkes has been voted one of the “Top Doctors” in San Diego for 11 years. Even after gaining the respect of the medical community and his patients, Dr. Lenzkes felt a void as many patients with chronic conditions became more sick and required more medications. At the same time Dr. Lenzkes battled his own weight gain while following ‘standard medical advice’. MBB 80: Brian Wiley-Six Defenses to Survive the Holidays & Stay on Track

Brian Wiley is a Certified Health Coach who works for Dr. Tro's medical weight loss and Direct Primary care, He has struggled with food addiction, and battled with obesity for most of his life. Being advised with mainstream approaches as his solution, along with the standard, “eat less, move more” resulted in minimal, or no success with eventual regain. In 2009, he reached his highest weight of 265 pounds. His doctor advised and encouraged him to take medications after his blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol reached dangerous levels at the age of only 35. His commitment to a low-carb lifestyle resulted in a 100-pound weight loss, and he was able to reverse his abnormal health markers improving his heart health and avoiding type 2 diabetes. Brian has maintained his weight loss for the nearly 12 years. "I see people every day on social media and in real life and they’re struggling. They’re going through the same struggles of food addiction, unhealthy eating patterns, and unsuccessful dieting like I did. Even 12 years later the same advice is given out but the situation is getting worse, I want to serve as an example that this approach can be successful. Michelle Hurn is a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of experience as a clinical, acute care dietitian, lead dietitian in psychiatric care, and outpatient dietitian. Michelle is an avid endurance athlete, she has qualified for the Boston Marathon 12 times, and she is currently training for her first ultra-marathon. While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connecting between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation,” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the rapidly declining health of her patients. In 2019, Michelle decided to follow a low carbohydrate, high animal protein diet to see if it would alleviate severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, her decades of anxiety began to fade. After reviewing the extensive clinical trials on a low carbohydrate diet, she knew she had to spread the word about this transformative way of eating. Michelle is currently writing a book, “The Dietitian’s Dilemma,” detailing how the current nutrition guidelines came into existence and advocating a low carbohydrate, animal-based way of eating as an option for individuals struggling with diabetes, mental disorders, eating disorders, sarcopenia, and heart disease. MBB 75: Josh Perry-A Brain Tumor Survivor's Reflections on Cultivating a Life of Love, Health & Happiness

Josh Perry was born and raised on Cape Cod, MA, where he developed his passion for BMX bike riding. Josh moved to Greenville, NC when he was 17 to pursue a career as a pro-BMX athlete and to ride with the best riders in the world, including Dave Mirra. In 2009, Josh won his first pro contest as well as the best trick contest, winning him a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Following the big win, Josh made his first X-Games appearance and continued competing in the Dew Action Sports Tour (2007-2013). In March of 2010, a hard crash on his bike led Josh to the hospital in fear of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). After almost a year of migraines, bouts of temporary blindness, and being repeatedly told that nothing was wrong, an MRI to rule out a concussion revealed a mass taking up the entirety of the left side of his brain. At the young age of 21, Josh faced mortality. In April of 2010, Josh underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor taking up the entire left side of his brain. This was a major turning point in his life putting him on track to learning about nutrition and taking better care of his body. In November of 2012, Josh had Gamma Knife Radiation treatment to treat two new tumors. This was another eye-opener for Josh and his health, which led him to research holistic health and nutrition even deeper. With his experiences with brain tumors and injuries, Josh became very passionate about learning about food and the correlation to our health and wellbeing, as well as sharing information with others in hopes of helping them become well. In February of 2014, Josh enrolled in the world’s largest nutrition program, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. In February of 2015, Josh completed the program to earn a certification as a Holistic Health Coach to further his efforts in sharing information with others and helping them achieve their goals with their health and wellbeing. In April of 2015, Josh launched www.DailyBrainstorms.com to share his story, and passion with the world and in October of 2016, Josh founded the Josh Perry Foundation as his way to give back to the world. A native of Miami, Florida, Danny Vega received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Columbia University in 2004, where he played football and was a three-time Dean’s List recipient. Danny earned his Master’s of Science in Human Performance from the University of Florida, where he worked with the national championship men’s basketball team along with the tennis and golf programs. He then went on to become the Strength & Conditioning coordinator for VCU basketball, helping the Rams to the 2007 conference champions and making it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. As a raw powerlifter, he had meet bests of 640 squat in wraps (610 raw), 400 bench, and 700 deadlift. He has competed in indoor rowing, where he has personal bests of 1:19.9 in the 500 meter, 14.5 in the 100 meter, and 389 meters in the minute for distance—all 3 of them are Florida state records. Born and raised in Waltham Massachusetts, Oak Lonetree (Peter Smerlas) is an MC extraordinaire that matches blue collar raps with classic boom bap production. From storytelling to relatability on common topics, each song ultimately embodies a pure hip hop sound. Aside from being schooled in 90s rap, he got involved with the hardcore and metal scene as a kid. By hanging out with the different cliques and crews, he became familiar and interested in various styles of music. His career began in 2003 when he joined the band, Primary Others, as co-vocalist. From there he released many solo projects and formed alliances with Cursed Out Productions, Hi Speed Network, and the The Dunnas -featuring punchline powerhouse Big Dese. By being no stranger to hard work, Oak was able to perform on shows with EPMD, Rakim, Black Milk, Roc Marciano, Devin the Dude, KRS-1, Camp Lo, Dirt Nasty, and more. “He has always been a positive force in the New England scene. MBB 52: Kristin Barishian: Conquering the Boston Marathon with a Fat Fueled Lifestyle

Kristin Barishian is a CPA and marathon runner from Boston, MA. Kristin has struggled with an eating disorder for most of her life, being diagnosed with anorexia in high school and having a revolving door experience with hospitals and eating disorder clinics. For the past 20 years, prior to the carnivore diet, Kristin followed a low fat, moderate protein and high carb diet to fuel her training runs, as she thought this was the perfect diet for a marathoner. She ate 6-8 times per day as she was always hungry. Her daily diet consisted of two very, very, very large salads a day, lots of rice cakes, puffed rice cereal, egg whites, turkey, chicken, non fat plain greek yogurt, protein powder and protein bars. She drank a ton of diet coke and other low calorie beverages to fill her up, and was ingesting up to 20 packets of fake sweeteners per day. She was depressed and had high anxiety all the time, and constantly thought about food. Kristin was diagnosed with anemia in October 2018 and was hospitalized for five days. She spent the next two months getting iron infusion on a weekly basis. As a result, she turned to the keto diet, which was extremely scary for her as she was afraid of red meats and fats. The keto diet saved Kristin's life. Not only did it help cure her anemia, but it helped lower her anxiety and give her mental clarity. After a year of doing the keto diet, Kristin decided to experiment with the carnivore diet, as she still felt like she was addicted to the sweeteners and she still had stomach pains and bloating from eating so many veggies. The carnivore diet has helped Kristin feel free from food addiction, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
