It's July. How is it July? And yet... it is. So now seems like a good time to bring back friend of the podcast - and professional TV critic, as heard on BBC Radio Five Live and elsewhere - Scott Bryan to check in on his favourite TV shows of the year so far. Somehow his list doesn't feature Shogun, which is definitely controversial (and he knows it). Also! As more than a bit of a bonus we have Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Lionel Boyce talking about The Bear as its third series drops in the UK on Disney+ - and Ali does his best not to watch all of it in just one evening / sitting.
Today Ben speaks to a man who is no stranger to agri podcasting or indeed broadcast journalism in general - Surrey farmer and Farmers Weekly podcast host Hugh Broom. Hugh worked full time as a broadcast journalist in radio for 10 years first in local radio in Reading before moving to Capital Radio, LBC and Classic FM in London and then going part time with BBC Radio Five Live doing news and travel until it moved to Manchester. Throughout that period he was also running the family farm in Surrey where he's the fourth generation to farm. The business is currently focussed on rearing dairy beef cattle but in the past also had a sheep enterprise and various direct sales ventures. From 2004 to 2009 he wrote for Farmers Weekly and when they launched their podcast at the beginning of Covid, Hugh was the obvious choice to sit alongside Johann Tasker as co-host. He's sat on numerous NFU committees in various roles including as south east livestock chair and National Beef Chair. In 2015, fifteen-year-old Shamima Begum left the UK with two of her friends on a flight bound for Turkey. But the East London schoolgirls were not going on holiday. They were going to join thousands of recruits from across the globe in the Syrian city of Raqqa. They were going to join the so-called Islamic State. Four years later Shamima Begum, now nineteen, was found in a refugee camp and the UK Government revoked her citizenship, something she's been trying to get back ever since. But what would make a teenager want to join a group like Islamic State? What were the “push and pull factors” linked to ISIS radicalisation? On this episode of Bad People Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen are joined by Josh Baker, the journalist behind ‘The Shamima Begum Story', where for the first time her account of what happened is investigated. This episode contains clips from the BBC Radio Five Live podcast ‘I'm Not A Monster: The Shamima Begum Story' CREDITS Presenters: Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen Producer: Lauren Armstrong-Carter Assistant Producer: Hannah Ward Editors: Anna Lacey Music: Matt ChandlerCommissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland #BadPeople_BBC
The UK continues its effective switch-off of the AM waveband. The station I knew as “Virgin 1215”, more latterly “Absolute Radio”, comes off AM this month in the UK. After working for Virgin for a number of years, it's sad to see the AM signal go.In the same press release - the first station I worked behind a mixing desk for - the station I knew as Classic Gold West Yorkshire on 1278 and 1530, will also be turned off.The first commercial radio station I ever listened-to at home, which I knew as Signal Radio 257, is also being turned off.And the first commercial radio station I listened to while being stuck at school, Radio Tees (also 257), will also see the big switch-off by the end of this month. It's almost as if Bauer are doing this personally! No wonder, really: according to a government official, AM radio in the UK has about 2% of UK radio's listening hours, yet costs 35% in electricity costs. It's eye-wateringly expensive to be on AM if you look at the power costs.Adam Bowie knows more than most, and has blogged about the intricate details of one of the UK's special INR analogue licences coming off the AM band. He suggests it's “a healthy six figure sum” to broadcast a national radio station on AM.Steven Goldstein, blogging from CES, notes that Tesla, Porsche, Audi, Volvo, and Ford have all removed AM from their electric vehicles. Some suggest that it's an interference issue; that's probably part of the reason, though my hybrid Toyota Prius manages AM just fine - I also suspect it's the cost of antennas and shielding.Remaining on the AM dial in the UK - and using the same, shared, transmitter network - are talkSPORT and BBC Radio Five Live. It's likely that this will, long term, mean that their costs increase.AM radio is clearly on its last legs - regardless of what the DRM Consortium will tell you - and what happens in the US and Europe will have its effects elsewhere in the world. Here in Australia, the ABC's flagship speech services (ABC Local Radio, News Radio, and Radio National) are all on AM in the capital cities. Their presence on DAB - surely one of the escape rafts for these services - is never once mentioned. Each of those services is in decline. I worry.Interesting to spot new, frequency-free logos for Nine's radio services, like 4BC in Brisbane, and 2GB Sydney. I hope that they will be accompanied by the AM frequency in marketing (since that's still important to market), but as a long-term change, it's one that makes sense.A good piece from Valerie Geller in 2006 - which radio programmers would have been wise to have listened to: arguing for doubling-down on radio's unique selling proposition, rather than cutting it out and relying on syndicated stuff.Devices used when listening to audio in the home....
Anthony Peake is the author of 12 books. He has lectured across the UK and Europe and has also given talks in New York and Melbourne, Australia. He has appeared on national television in Germany and France and has been interviewed on numerous BBC local radio stations and nationally on BBC Radio Five Live. Here are the themes of four of Anthony's books most relevant to what we discuss in this interview. Is There Life After Death: The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When We Die (2006) Do you occasionally have that strange feeling known as déjà vu? Do you sometimes feel that you know what is going to happen next? Do you ever have a strong feeling that actions you are about to take are the right (or wrong) thing to do? All these perceptions may be everyday clues to your immortality. This book proposes that personal death is a scientific impossibility. Using the latest findings of neurology, quantum physics, and consciousness studies, Anthony suggests that we never die. This book will help you understand the reason for your life and how you can make it better next time. The Daemon: A Guide To Your Extraordinary Secret Self (2008) Appearing in Greek mythology, the Daemon is broadly understood as a guiding spirit which exists as one half of your split self. Anthony proposes that people consist of not one but two separate consciousnesses - everyday consciousness and that of The Daemon, a higher being that seems to possess knowledge of future events. Drawing upon phenomena such as déjà vu and near-death experiences, he explores the ways that our Daemon breaks through into our consciousness and can subconsciously impact upon our decisions. This book draws upon neurology, metaphysics and theology. It also follows the stories of famous figures, including Byron, Geothe, Jean Cocteau, and many others who have "felt a force outside themselves". The Hidden Universe: An Investigation Into Non-Human Intelligences (2019) From aliens or ghosts to the djinn, electric-voice phenomenon, and UFO abductions, this book is the most comprehensive and enlightening survey ever made of encounters with the "others" - intelligent, self-motivated beings that are clearly not human in their origins. In addition to fully detailing the history of these encounters, the book attempts a bold explanation (never before undertaken) of the true nature of these beings. The book will explore the increasingly frequent entheogen encounters facilitated by substances such as dimethyltryptamine, ayahuasca, 5-Meo-DMT, and LSD, as well as the beings encountered by individuals suffering from Alzheimer's-related Charles Bonnet Syndrome, young children's non-corporeal companions, and the seemingly independent beings met during lucid dreaming and near-death and out-of-body experiences. This model proposes that consciousness, far from being simply an accident of evolution, is the actual root source of the material universe. It suggests that at its most basic level everything that is seemingly physical is rendered into existence by consciousness. Cheating The Ferryman: The Revolutionary Science of Life After Death (2022) Is there life after death? This age-old question has plagued humankind from the moment we became self-aware, but do we now have enough evidence to answer it? This book reveals an extraordinary model of life after death—one that brings together ideas from ancient philosophy, neuroscience, quantum physics, and consciousness studies and manages to explain a number of seemingly mysterious experiences such as precognition, déjà vu, synchronicity, near-death experiences, and out-of-body experiences. It is called Cheating the Ferryman. This book is a much-awaited follow-up to Is There Life After Death, which introduced his revolutionary model. Since then, he has amassed more evidence, using new studies by world-leading researchers, theories from the likes of Stephen Hawking, Carl Jung, and Hugh Everette, together with testimonies of NDEs and precogni...

If you‘ve already made millions and you know you're being watched, why keep offending?Curtis Warren was one of Britain's wealthiest drug barons, who had a remarkable journey from the streets of Liverpool to the summit of the international cocaine trade. He was the first person to trade directly with the notorious Cali Cartel in South America, and the courts eventually asked him to pay back an incredible £198 million.Yet Curtis Warren has spent the majority of his adult life behind bars, unable to enjoy his ill-gotten gains. So if you've already made a fortune from crime, and you know the authorities are on to you, what keeps you going back for more? Why wouldn't you just lie low and enjoy spending your money? Is it a career, a habit, an addiction, or something else?On this episode of Bad People Dr Julia Shaw is joined by Livvy Haydock from the podcast ‘Gangster', which tells the story of Curtis Warren from the streets of Toxteth in the 1980s to becoming Interpol's ‘Target One'.This episode contains clips from the BBC Radio Five Live podcast Gangster: The Story of Curtis Warren.CREDITS Presenters: Dr Julia Shaw and Livvy Haydock Producer: Ben Motley Editor: Anna Lacey Music: Matt Chandler Commissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland #BadPeople_BBCBad People is produced in partnership with The Open University and is a BBC Audio Science Production for BBC Sounds.
The Queen is the longest-lived and the longest-reigning monarch in British history as well as the first to celebrate a platinum jubilee. The milestone is being marked with Trooping the Colour on Horse Guard's Parade, royal gun salutes, a service of Thanksgiving in St Paul's Cathedral and a Jubilee Pageant with the Gold State Carriage led by the Sovereign's Escort. For more than 70 years Her Majesty has been at the centre of ceremonial life, and images of her wearing the royal robes and the Imperial State Crown are seared into our collective memory. But there's another side to the life of Elizabeth II, far away from Buckingham Palace, bugles and military bands. The Queen is a farmer, landowner and countrywoman, said to never be happier than when she's out in the countryside in the company of her dogs, horses and livestock. Privately her passions are her corgis and dorgis (corgi-dachshund crosses), Shire horses, rare breed fell ponies, her string of racehorses, the running of the royal farms and her livestock which includes three historic native cattle breeds; the Jersey, Highland and Sussex. In this edition of Farming Today, Vernon Harwood is in Windsor, in the shadow of the world famous castle, to consider the monarch's place in the rural life of the nation, and learn about the support she gives to individuals and organisations in the countryside. The first thing you do in hypnotherapy setting is to build rapport, which makes people feel comfortable, and therefore respond to the hypnosis much better. I use affirmations which I deliver at a certain point in the recording, and also use sound frequencies to make the recordings enjoyable to listen to, and experiential. I've made the recordings over a 20-year period and they've changed over time, and now I generalize the recordings and make them work for the majority. There are times I've re-recorded an old recording, and then people write in and ask for the original because they feel connected with it. When I make recordings, I totally believe in what I'm saying and what I'm delivering. You just have to be right for this job, because if you're in the right place, you get that ability to be able to help others. I saw a stage hypnotist doing his thing and I saw something in it in that moment, and that's what sparked my interest then went off and learned the therapeutic side. I never intentionally started to make recordings for any kind of business plan. I did it for a client who asked me for a recorded session. I started recording more tapes and sold them off to stores and it took off very quickly. I was meditating and doing affirmations about being in the right place at the right time, and my unconscious mind my conscious mind, were working in perfect synergy. I got a call from Nielsen book data and they said that I could have a gold disc for my title, because I had sold a quarter of a million pounds' worth, and I got a gold disc. I then realized I could use that as leverage promotional thing and I put that out there on all social media which led to BBC offering me a deal for all of my recordings. All the time I was working on my unconscious to clear away any negative failure programming because without doing that, it would have been much harder and I wouldn't have got this far. Commercial break You can create this program inside you, that the external world responds to automatically. If you take on board these affirmations and these beliefs on a deep level, the world responds to you and is incredible. This life is an amazing opportunity to grow and heal our Karma and awaken, and naturally, looking inside and meditation is the way to find that. A lot of my work is about helping people who are stuck, to move forward and work on themselves and go for the delayed gratification instead of the short term pleasure. Look at the influences in your life and do not be afraid to cut ties when people are holding you back or lowering your energy. Focus on creating your own safe place through a daily meditative practice and nurture yourself. ………………………………………………… Do you want to be a go to expert that news reporters, anchors and media producers turn to? Murder cases that take nearly four decades to solve are rare and usually reserved for when there is no idea as to the identity of the perpetrator. The brutal killings of Peta Frampton and Chris Farmer in Latin America in 1978 should have seen the suspect Silas Duane Boston arrested and convicted quickly – especially as there were two witnesses: his sons. But a case such as this doesn’t get a podcast – the BBC’s Paradise – devoted to the tale if things are straightforward. Far from it, in fact.Boston’s sons were young and scared of their father, only coming forward decades later. Law enforcement agencies, armed with snippets of information about the disappearance of Peta and Chris, did not put the pieces together for years.BBC journalists Dan Maudsley and Stephen Nolan tell the story of Chris and Peta, Silas and his sons, and the investigation – uncovering many new details and discoveries along the way.Their journey takes them to a crime convention, lawyer and police offices in the US, the homes of Chris and Peta’s family members in England and a trip to the region where the murders took place, including a graveyard as Dan and Chris’s sister search for the graves of the victims.Listeners will soon realise that Dan’s work on the Paradise case is not over, as he explains in this episode of MetaPod.

Rory Smith joins Jonathan Wilson and Marcus Speller on this week’s Greatest Games to reflect on one of football’s most highly-anticipated fixtures to have never even happened – the postponed 2018 Copa Libertadores final second-leg between River Plate and Boca Juniors. A rousing 2-2 draw at La Bombonera had perfectly set-up a winner-takes-all Copa Libertadores superclásico final – the like of which never to have been witnessed before in the 58-year history of the competition. However, it was an occasion that proved too seismic to even taken place – where it was originally intended to have been hosted, at least. The local and global significance of the superclásico, Conmebol tribulations, Jacaranda trees and more.About the panel: Jonathan Wilson founded The Blizzard in 2011 and is editor of the magazine. He’s contributed to a number of publications including the Guardian and Sports Illustrated as well as having authored Behind the Curtain, Inverting the Pyramid, The Outsider, Angels with Dirty Faces and most recently The Names Heard Long Ago, among others. Marcus Speller is a host of the Football Ramble podcast as well as Answerable Questions with Questionable Answers. Marcus also regularly hosts our live Q&A events across the country alongside Jonathan. At the age of 17, Hope Edelman lost her Mom to breast cancer. After she lost her Dad later in life, she turned her pain into inspiration, as she began a journey to better understand the confusing world of grief. Her first book, "Motherless Daughters" was a number one New York Times best-seller, and now her latest book, "The After Grief", gives a brilliant insight into how we not only process grief, but how loss isn't something we just get over. The BBC Radio Five Live presenter Tony Livesey, who lost his Mum suddenly, when he was just 13 said about Hope's book, that if he'd had a roadmap like this for dealing with grief, it would have changed his childhood. This blogpost is dedicated to Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo of BBC Radio Five Live. I enjoy their Friday-afternoon banter and wondered if I could support them in any way. Well, there is only one thing that came to mind: I could help Mark, who always tries to pronounce names and titles correctly, to do so in German. This is an alphabetical list of Germans (and Austrians) that claim international fame. Some more, some less... By clicking on the player below each name, you will hear it pronounced in German. You can also download each file as an MP3 by right-clicking on the name and the clicking on "save as". If you need more names - please just send me an e-mail or leave your suggestions in the comments!
