It's a heart-to-heart on Spotlight today, as Gareth and Ross kick off by discussing a Discourse question about whether running marathons is bad for your heart? Ross describes five cardiac "risks" that have been documented, giving context and a bit of reassurance in response to theory that excessive endurance training is damaging to heart tissue. We then talk about maximum heart rate, and why it's an imperfect anchor for training prescription and a poor comparison between people. We shift from heart to brain to briefly discuss whether coaches should be sanctioned when players tackle poorly in rugby, and end off with a brief look at two teen phenoms competing in Australia last week, wondering whether their trajectories are inviting unreasonable pressure at too young an age.DiscourseAs always, Spotlight is inspired by your engagement in our Discourse community, and you can become a member by visting the Patreon site, and pledging a small monthly amount that gets you access and an opportunity to engage with, and learn from, fellow listeners.Show notesIan's question about heart risk from marathon running, and some excellent Discourse replies - Members onlyThe research paper on troponin elevation after marathons, which kicked off the Discourse discussion at the front of today's showGood insight and discussion on whether too much exercise is bad for you? Here's that article i mentioned where Tim Noakes punched some holes in the theory that marathon runners would be protected against coronary artery diseaseUltimately, sudden cardiac death in marathon runners is rare. Episode 2525 - In this BEST OF, Vinnie Tortorich and Professor Tim Noakes discuss sports science, how diabetes is carb intolerance, your brain and "the bonk", and much more. [libsyn_podcast id=32507382] PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Diabetes Is Carb Intolerance Vinnie and Prof. Tim Noakes begin with a discussion of Tim's professional background, especially in the early years of sports science. (2:00) He has been involved with sports science for decades; he studies the whole human biological system in its entirety. They discuss the early days of sports science used in the Olympics and other events like the Tour de France and what things were discovered. Tim has written several books such as (now in its 4th edition) and . and (11:00) Tim constantly reviews new information and updates his work; you have to move with the evidence. Vinnie asks Tim to share what the issue was with Tim's historical trial and the “tweet heard around the world”. (17:30) The trial was about information and not being able to speak outside the narrative of certain organizations. He gives various details about the trial, too. They turn to the topic of Diabetes. (26:00) Tim shares his history dealing with T2D and what he's discovered about himself using a low-carb lifestyle. He emphasizes that diabetes is carb intolerance. Vinnie and Tim discuss dealing with carb intolerance and give examples of ideal levels. (33:00) Even 1 gram of higher insulin inhibits the burning of fat. Many people don't understand that if they have large amounts of visceral fat, they are insulin resistant and at the very least, pre-diabetic. Your liver can produce any glucose your brain needs, except possibly over 4-5 hours of constant exercise; Tim explains. (35:00) The purpose of “carb burning” is not because your body “needs” the carbs; it's because your body is trying to get rid of the glucose in the blood. (35:20) Keeping your glucose and insulin flat is what keeps you healthy. (37:00) [adrotate banner="64"] The "Bonk" They also discuss going through a "bonk", and how the brain responds to carbs, even sweetness. (37:15) Tim discusses a study where they discovered surprising results about burning carbs vs. burning fat. The people in the study who were pre-diabetic benefitted the most from a high-fat diet. (50:30) This leads to a discussion about questioning long-held theories. (51:00) So they discuss the different Zones in exercise that can be done on a ketogenic diet--it's higher than previously thought! So this blows away previously done studies. They chat a bit about the training and success of Kenyan and Ethiopian elite runners. (55:00) Vinnie gets Tim's take on the use of drugs like Ozempic. (58:00) Changing your behavior is the only real way to be successful with your health. You can donate to the or ; Tim explains the important work that they do. They call the diet "Banting" in South Africa, in honor of the man who first proposed the ketogenic diet more than 100 years ago. Chef Jonno Proudfoot helped to popularize not just the term but the diet itself when he swam from Mozambique to Madagascar in the same year he released a Cook Book along with the legendary Tim Noakes. That confluence of circumstances spurred a nationwide movement towards a low-carb, high-fat lifestyle. Proudfoot narrates his story with a dash of history, a pinch of socio-political context, and a sprinkle of media influence. Jonno provides practical tips for those attempting the delicate balance of promoting a healthy lifestyle without commercializing it. People have asked us many times what we think of CrossFit, so it's about time we just laid it all out. In this episode we work our way through CrossFit's various philosophies, protocols, and teachings and highlight where we agree and where we don't. In general, the first half of the conversation is more critical while the second half is more positive. If you want to dive in on your own, we framed this conversation around the CrossFit Level 1 Training Guide, which you can download for free. They describe it as "the most comprehensive CrossFit training resource available" and "foundational to the CrossFit methodology" so it's arguably the best primary source for understanding the CrossFit system. We talk about all the classics in here: - Defining "fitness" and CrossFit's "fitness in 100 words"- What "functional fitness" means- Kipping- Nutrition (including Paleo and Zone)- Olympic Lifting- Uncle Rhabdo and Pukey the Clown And so much more... In one section we mentioned a series of articles on hydration. The Hyponatremia of Exercise is a 12 part series by Tim Noakes. Here's a link to part one which links to all the subsequent parts. Skip to part 4 if you want to see where the Army (and specifically USARIEM) got involved, but it comes back up throughout the series.
High-carbohydrate diets and carbohydrate loading have been long-standing tenets of athletic training and competition, but newer research indicates a low-carbohydrate diet may be more beneficial for performance and overall health. Professor Tim Noakes and Josh Clemente discuss how a fat-adapted body can rely on fat as a fuel source at all exercise intensity levels, rather than burning mostly carbohydrates, and how such adaptation and dietary focus may reduce one's risk of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Episode 2432 - BEST OF: On this Friday's BEST OF show, Vinnie Tortorich speaks to Dr. Nadir Ali and they discuss low-carb events, lipotoxicity and cholesterol, dopamine and hijacking your brain, and more. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS STATINS AND CHOLESTEROL Vinnie welcomes Dr. Nadir Ali back as a guest and they start by chatting a bit about Dr. Ali's focus on educational events, quality cholesterol, and living a "non-prescription lifestyle." (2:35) They also discuss how several doctors' or writers' careers have been limited, or even stopped, when they have tried to educate with the truth. (5:45) Maryanne Demasi from Australia is an example; Vinnie explains who she is. Also, both Gary Fettke and Tim Noakes have been targeted previously. The limitations on certain freedoms and access to information are concerning. The conversation leads to the use of statins. (12:07) Vinnie relays info from a consult he had and why he advised the person to find a different doctor. Dr. Ali goes into detail about when things like statins and CAC scans can be useful, and when they are unnecessary. For a doctor to just give you a statin and tell you it's good for you is not great; there are instances where a statin helps, and when they do not. He also goes into detail about genetic factors like PCSK-9, and how it makes a difference in cholesterol levels. (20:30) Vinnie asks about the carnivore diet and whether it's a good idea for cholesterol. (23:00) There are plenty of good reasons to eat meat. There is potential for lipotoxicity in some people; Dr. Ali explains. (25:10) There needs to be an individualized approach; as a result, it may be better to transition in stages. HIJACKING YOUR BRAIN They switch to talking about how to get people to change their habits, as everyone always wants a "magic bullet". (31:00) Dr. Ali goes into how he and his colleagues have come up with tricks and hacks to help people improve their habits. (31:30) Dr. Ali goes into detail about the "dopamine spike effect." (32:10) He describes studies that show the anticipation of the reward is what spikes the dopamine, NOT the reward itself. He also talks about how food engineering has manipulated our brains to want to eat more, especially things like sugars. Vinnie and Dr. Ali discuss addiction, and willpower vs. changing your environment. (37:00) They discuss how to get someone who is less disciplined to be able to change habits. (47:10) Dr. Ali describes a study that shows how random rewards affect dopamine, anticipation, and behavior. (50:50) The same behavior modification is used in Vegas on slot machines. The food industry uses a similar effect to hijack your brain by modifying food to trigger addiction and purchasing patterns. This leads the conversation to today's tech, algorithms, and the challenge of addiction in that area. (54:00) Vinnie tells Dr. Ali about what he observed with a young man at the gym. Dr. Ali mentions how he has changed his environment to change his patterns. For all the benefits of tech, there is a detrimental side. (59:00) Dr. Ali can be found at ; on youtube at ; and in his . Rachael Cunningham won the free race entry to IRONMAN New Zealand. We find out more about her. We explore the crucial role of mental fitness in endurance sport and its significance for both performance and recovery. We discuss how athletes handle pre-race anxiety and stress differently and the mental resilience required in elite adventure racing where cognitive stamina and decision-making under duress are as crucial as physical ability. We share insights from an episode of That Triathlon podcast with certified psychologist Stuart Holliday, who specializes in working with endurance athletes. Stuart discusses the o of self-talk and the need for athletes to conduct a robust self-assessment, examining their psychological approach before, during and after races. We introduce Matt Fitzgerald's book "How Bad Do You Want It?" as a resource for understanding and improving mental toughness in the face of adversity. We examine key concepts such as the central governor theory by Tim Noakes, discussing the role of the brain and mind in athletic performance. We also explore the notion that athletes don't encounter their true physical limits due to a maximum tolerance for perception of effort. While some individuals possess an innate ability to push past their perceived limits, for most, this is a skill that can be developed. We touch on cases where athletes perform significantly better on race day compared to their training sessions, suggesting a psychological component that unlocks higher intensity and effort levels. Lastly, we consider the role of psychology in recovery, discussing practices like yoga nidra and meditation, which can aid in activating the parasympathetic nervous system for improved rest and digestion. Episode 2420 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich speaks with journalist Andrea Bertaglio who shares a recent controversy where truth is stranger than fiction, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2023/12/stranger-than-fiction-andrea-bertaglio-episode-2420 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction Andrea is experiencing a similar thing that happened to Dr Tim Noakes. (3:00) His book "" has caused some attention, a lot of it negative. (7:00) He is being accused of trying to diminish animal welfare, but that is not what he is doing at all. He just writes science-based articles about the importance of meat in nutrition and the importance of livestock. He also writes about animal welfare and that it is in the best interest of both the farmers and the animals to have reasonable parameters in place. He tells a story that is an example of how certain rules affect farmers' ability to produce. (18:00) Vinnie wonders what a journalist is anymore. (22:30) Now there is “identity news”; Andrea weighs in. Andrea feels like he is transparent in his efforts and in informing the public. (27:00) Andrea explains how he got caught up in a current controversy. (30:00) Truth is stranger than fiction. He was invited to do a podcast interview but it was used for an article where he was misrepresented. He was attacked on LinkedIn and explains how a different article claimed to have reached out to him “in depth” when in actuality it was a “copy and paste” situation. (34:00) So there's a big lack of integrity behind the claims against him. Deep Pocket Interests Andrea explains some of the differences in how topics are addressed in different parts of Europe vs. in the U.S. (35:15) Vinnie discusses how corporations have their hands in so many of the U.S. organizations like the ADA and the AHA. (40:00) There are deep pockets involved in so many of these interests. Vinnie shares an Instagram post that received a lot of comments accusing him of fear-mongering. (42:30) Andrea is not interested in falling into conspiracy theory; however, there is a definite drive from certain ideologies to replace animal agriculture with manufactured products. (48:00) Vinnie gives a rundown on how the argument by vegans and other activists keeps changing. (52:00) Organizations in Europe are trying to claim that livestock animals are emitting more gases than transport vehicles. (54:00) They chat about other ideas that spark controversy. (49:00) Denmark is forcing farms to close to fall under climate numbers. In Ireland, there is a movement to kill over 200,000 head of cattle. Then there is the movement to get schools to reduce serving animal proteins. You can find Andrea on X @AndreaBertaglio. It's a journey from alcohol & drugs, to rock n roll, then turning his life around and becoming a nutrition expert. 18:56 - Jonny's top 5 nutrition myths that need to be addressed about saturated fat and cholesterol. 22:15 - The incidence of pre-diabetes is a real issue in western society and Jonny explains why and what it's all about. 24:12 - The medical fraternity are divided on the issue of nutrition. Add to this, Big Pharma has a huge influence on MD's and what information they are exposed to. 31:05 - As a young ER doctor, Peter Attia felt contempt for a patient with diabetes. She was overweight, he thought, and thus responsible for the fact that she needed a foot amputation. But years later, Attia received an unpleasant medical surprise that led him to wonder: is our understanding of diabetes right? Could the precursors to diabetes cause obesity, and not the other way around? A look at how assumptions may be leading us to wage the wrong medical war. This is the TED talk from Peter Attia that Jonny Bowden refers to. 32:03 - Tim Noakes, an MD and University of Cape Town (UCT) emeritus professor, won the second of two decisive victories against his regulatory body, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The HPCSA's Appeal Committee dismissed its own lawyers' objections and upheld in full its first committee's comprehensive ruling for Noakes in April 2017. That ruling exonerated him completely on all 10 aspects of a charge of unprofessional conduct. The appeal ended the HPCSA's unprecedented, multimillion trial of Noakes that it had dragged out for more than four years. Its ruling reverberates down medical, nutrition science and food- and drug-industry corridors of power globally to this day. It effectively endorsed Noakes's right to freedom of speech as a scientist and the evidence for low-carbohydrate, high-healthy fat (LCHF) therapies. It vindicated his vigorous opposition to South Africa's industry-led, high-carb, low-fat Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs). The FBDGs closely follow the influential US guidelines that launched in the late 1970s and are currently under revision. Gut microbiota are the microorganisms, including bacteria and archaea, that live in the digestive tracts of vertebrates including humans, and of insects. Alternative terms include gut flora and gut microbiome. The gastrointestinal metagenome is the aggregate of all the genomes of gut microbiota. Jonny explains in simple terms how we can try and optimize our gut microbiome. 1:08:15 - Fixing the gut involves many different things and is a multi-factorial approach and most doctors don't address it. The Plant Free MD with Dr Anthony Chaffee: A Carnivore Podcast
The Plant Free MD Series | Episode 40 | Tom McDonald In this episode Dr. Chaffee and Simon chat with professional AFL player Tom McDonald. AFL is the most popular sport in Australia and it requires strength, endurance, athleticism and of course skill. Tom is in his 13th professional season and plays a key role for the Melbourne Demons who are one of the top teams. For more than 8 years Tom has eaten a meat heavy, high fat and low carb diet. He was first inspired to try it when Professor Tim Noakes was invited to speak at the Melbourne Demons. This way of eating and the hard data provided by Prof. Noakes inspired Tom to try and he hasn't looked back. Tom explains his rigorous training schedule and how he gets enough nutrition into his system, how he optimises his recovery and his body composition for professional sport. We talk about how to overcome cramps, why carnivore and ketosis are antiinflammatory, what's going on with Saladino and his honey and fruit diet, whether plants are hormetic, the dangers of oxalates and more. Tom is well spoken, he's a critical thinker and he's curious, he makes an excellent guest and I'm sure you're going to really enjoy this conversation. In this excerpt, Prof. Tim Noakes shares how he began to realize the benefits of eating low-carb, high-fat food.

Episode 2315 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich and return guest Professor Tim Noakes discuss sports science, dealing with carb intolerance, your brain and "the bonk", and much more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2023/04/dealing-carb-intolerance-tim-noakes-episode-2315 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS DEALING WITH CARB INTOLERANCE Vinnie and Prof. Tim Noakes begin with a discussion of Tim's professional background, especially in the early years of sports science. (2:00) He has been involved with sports science for decades. Sports science studies the whole human biological system, and its entire functioning. They discuss the early days of sports science used in the Olympics and other events like the Tour de France and what things were discovered. Tim has written several books such as (now in its 4th edition) and . (11:00) Tim constantly reviews new information and updates his work based on the findings; you have to move with the evidence. (35:00) The purpose of “carb burning” is not because your body “needs” the carbs; it's because your body is trying to burn off (or get rid of) the glucose in the blood. (35:20) Keeping your glucose and insulin flat is what keeps you healthy. (37:00) THE "BONK" They also discuss going through a "bonk", and how the brain responds to carbs, even sweetness. Episode 2226 - On this Friday's show, Vinnie Tortorich speaks to Dr. Nadir Ali and they discuss low-carb events, lipotoxicity and cholesterol, dopamine and hijacking your brain, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2022/11/hijacking-your-brain-episode-2226 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS STATINS AND CHOLESTEROL Vinnie welcomes Dr. Episode 2216 - On this Friday's show, Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Dr. Stephen Cunnane and they discuss brain development and fats, taking care of your brain, supplements, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/taking-care-your-brain-dr-stephen-cunnane-episode-2216 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS TAKING CARE OF YOUR BRAIN Vinnie starts the show by sharing how he heard about Dr. Stephen Cunnane through Dr. Mary Newport, who has been on the show recently. (1:45) Dr. Steven Cunnane talks a bit about his book, The book discusses brain development in babies and the need for healthy fats. (6:00) It also discusses how various nutrients play the part in various ways in human evolution. The big question Vinnie and Stephen discuss is: are you taking care of your brain? (15:00) Or are you letting it rot with what you are eating? Vinnie's interest in the brain comes from taking years of beatings playing football; as a result, he's curious about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). (16:00) Stephen says it's never too late to be able to make improvements; the question becomes "what can you do"? (21:25) Part of the challenge is the parameters given to doctors that make them hesitant to suggest low-carb. Mark Cucazzella is brought up as an example. The two discuss the movie "First Do No Harm", by Jim Abrams of the Charlie Foundation. (25:05) Charlie's doctors wanted to give him a lobotomy for his seizures; instead, they controlled his epilepsy with the ketogenic diet. They also discuss Eric Westman, Jeff Volek, Steve Phinney, Tim Noakes, and others and what an important part they play in low-carb science. They switch to discuss certain limitations of the current healthcare systems. (29:50) Certain low-carb doctors are walking away from standard practice so they can actually practice health care and not sick care. ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS Vinnie and Stephen also discuss what zinc and other minerals are optimal for the brain and how they help. (34:10) They discuss iodine, zinc, selenium, and certain deficiencies. They chat about the best sources of various nutrients. More is not always better, and Dr. Cunnane explains why. Don't over-intellectualize it: just eat sensibly. The conversation leads to a discussion about omega fatty acids, cholesterol, and ketones, and how the brain needs them. (46:30) There is still plenty to learn about cognitive decline and Alzheimer's; a lot of questions remain! (51:00) But there is more to it than diet and diabetes; social interaction, looking forward to things, and exercise seem to play a part as well in keeping a healthy brain. Conflicts of interest in science and medicine muddy up the waters of good information. (55:00) Dr. Cunnane has been awarded a research chair position at his university; as a result, the research will focus on ketotherapeutics. (1:01:30) They'll be studying ketogenic interventions of all sorts for mental illness, neurodegenerative disorders, and more. Episode 2212 - BEST OF: On this special edition of the Saturday show, we dusted off episode 256 (from April 2014) when Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino speak to Dr. Tim Noakes and they discuss a wide variety of health topics, from bad studies and good info, low carb, Big Pharma, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2022/10/bad-studies-good-info-dr-tim-noakes-episode-2212 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS BAD STUDIES & GOOD INFO Vinnie and Anna start the show with a couple of different stories. (1:30) They both have stories regarding some thievery happening in their areas of Los Angeles. Anna then tells Vinnie about what she witnessed while at an audition. (10:20) Vinnie is still cancer free! A few shout-outs to some "superfans"! Dr. Tim Noakes joins Vinnie and Anna and they start by asking him about confusion in the headlines regarding health topics. (16:00) Many nutritional studies are only based on association, not controlled interventional trials. They also chat about why he's low carb and some of the things that he has discovered for himself. (20:00) Vinnie asks Tim about Harvey and Banting (from 1862)--who they are and why they are important in health history. (26:20) They also chat about what changed in the 1950s, Ancel Keys' studies, and dietary guidelines. Tim mentions the little-known fact about Ancel Keys near the end of his life. (31:30) The conversation then turns to the "China Study" and why it's a good example of bad information. (32:15) This leads to talking about cholesterol and saturated fats and why Total LDL is not a real indicator of heart attack risk. (34:00) They chat about the importance of getting a calcium score. As a result, they also discuss how blood sugar plays a part. They discuss a bit about the question: if we have all the conclusive studies, why aren't changes happening faster? (40:00) Big Pharma plays a huge part by wielding its influence. INSULIN RESISTANCE & SUGAR ADDICTION They then get into insulin resistance: what it is and how it works (or doesn't). (43:30) Diabetes, hypertension, and other illnesses all have insulin resistance in common. (48:00) Sugar addiction is a real thing. Also: why are dietitians resistance to change? They also discuss ketosis, athletic performance, and "sugar trickling." (57:55) The trio discusses dairy, how it may affect weight loss, and what daily vitamins are helpful. (1:03:05) Anna and Vinnie wrap up the discussion with Tim, then conclude the show with a bit of music and a bunch of superfan shout-outs. Episode 2210 - BEST OF: On this special edition of the Wednesday show, we replay episode 838 when Vinnie Tortorich welcomes back Dr. William Davis to discuss his book "", the state of the healthcare industry, becoming undoctored, the effects of grains and sugars on your body, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/best-of-becoming-undoctored-dr-william-davis-epsiode-2210 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS BECOMING UNDOCTORED Vinnie welcomes Dr. William Davis who is a prominent cardiologist and also the author of "Wheat Belly". (2:00) Dr. Davis gives his own backstory of when he was in med school and the effects of the lifestyle and food that was available. (4:00) Vinnie and William discuss how diet is so important and the dietary guidelines are just bad! (8:00) All the grains that are promoted are to blame for T2D and autoimmune disorders. Many vitamin and mineral deficiencies happen because grains affect absorption and gut and bowel flora. (9:45) William then gives the reason behind writing his book "Undoctored". (10:30) Vinnie asks William where the idea of fiber and grains being beneficial to the bowel originated. (14:00) They also discuss how inflammation affects the body; Vinnie explains what would happen during his ultra racing. (20:25) William gives his thoughts on inflammation and toxins. Many prescribed medications for inflammation could be reduced if there weren't grain consumption. (22:50) They then discuss cholesterol and the myth behind it. (30:00) William talks about LDL and particle size and what it means. Vinnie shares his experience with cancer and what he was advised to do by his doctor. (35:00) William agrees that ketosis appears to be one of the best ways to avert cancer and encourage remission. MANAGING YOUR HEALTH They chat about how there are ways with tech and other resources for people to manage their own health better. (39:30) Vinnie and William chat about particle tests and statins. (46:15) William explains why parts of the cholesterol test aren't even an accurate measurement. Many doctors are motivated by money. (49:30) Because the sugar industry controls so much, often doctors become pariahs if they speak out against sugar and grain. An example is the treatment of Dr. Tim Noakes in South Africa when he was actually treating people and getting them healthy. (51:00) Dr. Davis tries to uncover the truths behind that in his new book. Health is a basic right. The grain industry has hired PR firms to discredit Dr. Davis. They also discuss several prominent vegan doctors. (56:00) William summarizes steps you can take for better health that he discusses in his "Undoctored" book as well. (1:01:10) Dr. Davis also discusses some of the books in his series, including cookbooks as well. (1:04:00) [the_ad id="20253"] PURCHASE BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE The documentary launched on January 11!
