TICKETS ON SALE NOW PORTLAND LIVE SHOW Bela's Legacy Bela Karolyi helped usher many gymnasts over decades to the pinnacle of the sport. If medals are the measure of success, few can match his accomplishments. When addressing his legacy, however, it would be irresponsible to ignore the wake of destruction he left behind and the culture he helped cultivate that resulted in the largest sexual abuse scandal in American sports history. Many gymnasts, even those who have shared their own stories of abuse by him, have equally expressed gratitude and admiration. It's possible to recognize his accomplishments while also addressing the physical and emotional scars he left on the sport. We are sensitive to those grieving, but we also feel an obligation to honor those who have suffered by sharing a more complete picture of Bela Karolyi. In an exclusive, we have decided to share the most serious allegation against Bela, which we unearthed in our reporting while scouring the Romanian Secret Police documents. The accusation is of sexual assault. We have redacted the names and specific dates to protect the other individuals involved. At the time, the accuser was a teenager less than half Bela's age. It's important to note that this document was recorded in the Secret Police files, but it has not been substantiated. With that said the police files corroborated the story from the survivor noting that the accuser confided in two adults, over two separate occasions a year apart. The decision to disclose a sexual assault allegation against Bela is not one taken lightly, especially in the wake of his passing. However, this revelation serves an essential purpose, not only for historical accuracy, but also for societal accountability and justice. Only by confronting uncomfortable truths can we honor the experiences of survivors, learn from systemic failures, and create a safer, more just society. Silence and deference to power have already caused immeasurable harm. It is time to prioritize truth and healing over the preservation of a mythological past.
Video

This week on The Roe Show, I interview well known US Gymnastics Coach, Steve Nunno. Steve most notably coached Shannon Miller to the 1992 Olympics. We discuss the post 1992 Olympic tour that Nunno helped create for Miller and the team and the current state of the sport. Miller is one of the most decorated US Woman's Gymnasts of all time. Miller, coached by Nunno, won seven medals across the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, including five as a 15-year-old at Barcelona, Spain. Nunno, brash, outgoing, fun-loving and very quotable, became co-king of gymnastics coaching, along with Bela Karolyi, a Nunno mentor turned occasional heated rival. Nunno and Karolyi shared coaching duties for the United States at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. They were on the floor at Atlanta's Georgia Dome 20 years ago, when Miller and the iconic U.S. women's team, "The Magnificent Seven," won the team gold medal. ***Content warning: In this episode, we discuss the ways that individuals used harmful and abusive methods in their coaching tactics and their impact on athletes.*** In the explosive second part of this interview with former US national gymnastics team choreographer and long-time Karolyi collaborator Geza Pozsar, all three hosts and guest delve into what the Karolyis reveal about gymnastics culture in communist Europe and the capitalist US. Geza powerfully makes the case that Bela Karolyi's abusive methods were a function of his deficiencies in technical knowledge, for which he overcompensated through overtraining and harsh discipline. Indeed, rather than viewing Bela as representative of Eastern methods, we should understand that he failed to thrive in the communist system. It was only in the US that he was fully embraced thanks to a capitalist preoccupation with winning at all costs. Geza also makes the case that although there has been the scapegoating of particular figures in the horrific scandals of violence and abuse that have rightly haunted US gymnastics in recent years, many other complicit figures have not been held accountable, including the mainstream media itself. ***Content warning: In this episode, we discuss the ways that individuals used harmful and abusive methods in their coaching tactics and their impact on athletes.*** In the first part of our interview with former choreographer for Béla and Martha Karolyi, the Romanian Communist State, and US national gymnastics team, Geza Pozsar takes us through his experiences living in Romania and working for the famous gymnastics' duo in the 1970s and 198-s. This is the first part of all the history about the Karolyi's and the Communist Romanian sport system that is left out of every Western media portrayal of the coaching duo. Geza explains how Bela's coaching tactics in particular were not representative of the Communist nor Romanian sport system. Rather, their system was much more brutal. Geza does not excuse the Karolyi's methods and condemns them as he has done for the last 10+ years. Importantly, he contextualizes their world and his role in it by recalling the pressure that the Romanian state placed on winning medals in international sport, and also the high stakes involved for coaches if they did not produce Olympic champions in terms of their daily life at home. These conditions, along with Geza's assessment of Bela's limited technical coaching abilities, explain their motivations for defecting to the West to try their hand at coaching careers there. By contextualizing this history for us, Geza moreover confirms the dangerous fallacies in our anti-Communist, pro-American, capitalist narrative of Cold War sport that we have discussed in episodes prior. For more on Geza Pozsar, check out Dvora Meyers' terrific piece here. You can find Geza on Twitter @GezaPozsar. *Content Warning: this episode explores the topics of physical, mental, and sexual abuse in sport* In the second episode with Georgia Cervin on the international history of women's artistic gymnastics, we tackle the topic of abuse and especially sexual abuse in the sport. Georgia explains how contrary to contemporary popular media portrayals, American gymnastics' coaching culture was rife with abusive elements before the Karolyi's and Nasser arrived on the scene, as famous gymnast Jennifer Sey has repeatedly spoken about in her published work and public speaking. The Karolyi's built on the cultural foundations of American gymnastics when they arrived, thereby contributing to—but not instigating—the abuse of girl gymnasts. Georgia moreover gives us her take on the recent documentary Athlete A. While she explains her critiques of it, Georgia also shares with us what Athlete A does really well in portraying the women's story to the audience. As a former gymnastics coach herself, we discuss the limited training opportunities for coaches based in healthy and educational methods. Lastly, we hear about Georgia's recent collaborative work interviewing former elite gymnasts and providing practical suggestions to FIG and other gymnastics national governing bodies on healthier coaching practices (which were almost categorically ignored), and why women's artistic gymnastics can and should be a feminist sport. She cites the resurgence of adult female gymnasts, using 45-year-old Oksana Chusovitina and 32-year-old Chellsie Memmel (with an IG following of nearly 45k!) as a positive trend for the sport. If you missed it, don't forget to check out the first episode with Georgia that provides the pre-Karolyi history of the sport! You can find out more about Georgia Cervin and her work on her website. Her collaborative report on how to healthily sustain gymnasts' careers into adulthood, which was almost completely ignored by the sport's most important bodies and leaders: “Coming of Age: Towards Best Practices in Women's Artistic Gymnastics.” Instagram account for Chellsie Memmel, the 2005 World Champion who is documenting her adult gymnastics journey and has nearly 45k followers. **Content warning: this episode explores the political and cultural foundations of gymnastics that helped open the door to the abusive nature of the sport that we know well today.** In the first of a two-episode interview, Johanna dives into a crucial conversation with Dr. Georgia Cervin that is almost completely left out of ESPN's 30 for 30 podcast account of gymnastics culture in Heavy Medals: how the international history of women's artistic gymnastics helped lead to the sport's abusive culture today. Cervin traces the sport's harmful core beginning with its femininity-obsessed and racist foundations in International Gymnastic Federation (FIG)'s Code of Points. She explains how the female leaders of FIG used the Code of Points partly to dictate and ensure that the sport—and thus its female athletes—conformed to the IOC's Western notions of white femininity. This concept of gymnastics' femininity underwent drastic changes in the second half of the 20th century. Female gymnasts were initially coached exclusively by women (men were banned from the competition halls!), and the sport was steeped in balletic traditions to emphasize femininity and grace in adult women. Starting in the 1970s, male coaches increasingly became assistant coaches and justified their presence as being necessary to physically train and support female gymnasts in acrobatic movements. They moreover facilitated the changes in gymnasts' age and maturity levels, encouraging the training of increasing young and less-physically developed girls. Georgia ends the episode by explaining how after the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, former Soviet coaches sought jobs abroad and were welcomed with open arms by gymnastics leaders in Australia, for instance. These developments forever altered the global culture of women's artistic gymnastics. Stayed tuned for Part II, where we continue this history by looking specifically at the ‘Karolyi foundation,' as coined by Scott Reid in his episode, in the US and how it compares to the pre-existing gymnastics culture in the US. While we wait for her forthcoming book to be released, her most relevant publications include “Ringing the Changes: How the Relationship Between the International Gymnastics Federation and the International Olympic Committee Has Shaped Gymnastics Policy,” and “Gymnasts are Not Merely Circus Phenomena: Influences on the Development of Women's Artistic Gymnastics During the 1970s.” After listening to the episode, check out our recent piece "Canceling the College-Football Season Isn't Enough" published in The Chronicle of Higher Education __________________________________________________________________________ As always, please like, share, and rate us on your favorite podcast app, and give follow us on Twitter or Instagram. @Derekcrim @JohannaMellis @Nkalamb @EndofSportPod www.TheEndofSport.com **For a transcription of this episode please click here. [content warning for discussions of child sexual abuse, suicide] Stephanie Green ventures back into the grim case against Larry Nassar with me this week, this time with Netflix's Athlete A, which sets itself apart from other properties by also making a case against USA Gymnastics, the Karolyi Ranch, and the messed-up ways we think about child athletes. If you watched At The Heart Of Gold, do you "need" to watch this one? And will you want a follow-up in a year's time? Later, we delved into the case of Scott Menaged as told by S13.E06 of American Greed. Despite Stacy Keach's gusto-rrific voice-over and a pretty decent explainer on recession-market house-flipping, Stephanie and I still had questions about Menaged's credit-card scam...and his terrible jeans. After the glory of winning gold in Atlanta, the U.S. National Team slips on the world stage, finishing last in the finals at the 1999 World Championships. With the next Olympics less than a year away, USA Gymnastics turns to the one person they think can save the team: Bela Karolyi. Bela finally has what he’s always wanted, control over a semi-centralized training system in the United States. But on such a tight schedule, will the, “You can do it!” motivator-in-chief be able to lead a team to victory? **Content warning: this episode explores the disturbing and pervasive issue of sexual abuse in sport. Please make an informed decision about listening to the episode. What Reid details, however, is necessary listening for athletes, parents, coaches, fans, and academics alike to understand one of the darkest sides of contemporary sports. This episode was also recorded before the release of Athlete A, but stay tuned for separate discussions on that in the near future!** Derek and Johanna speak with Scott Reid, an investigative reporter for the OC Register with decades of experience covering abuse scandals within sports, especially within USA Gymnastics and USA Swimming. Reid traces the long, interwoven threads of physical and emotional abuse with sexual abuse in some sports, dating in some cases in gymnastics back to the 1970s. He provides damning details about the culture of the ‘Karolyi foundation' that helped cultivate Larry Nasser's behavior and harm. Perhaps more shocking though is his assessment that because USA Swimming has historically been run by ‘good ole boys' who created a culture that normalized coach-swimmer relations, sexual abuse is more pervasive in this organization than in USA Gymnastics. He then lays bare the capitalist and structural reasons why national governing bodies, the NCAA, and even the IOC do not think that protecting athletes from harm is their #1 priority. At the end of the conversation we discuss the roles that athletes can play in protecting themselves, and Scott's take on how sports parents should approach their kids' coaches, social media, and vice-versa. You can check out some of Scott's work discussed in the episode here: “100s of USA swimmers were sexually abused for decades and the people in charge knew and ignored it, investigation finds” “NCAA argues in sex abuse case it has no legal duty to protect athletes” “SafeSport: Amy Nyman made gymnasts feel ‘scared, degraded and humiliated” Find Scott on Twitter: @sreidreporter __________________________________________________________________________ As always, please like, share, and rate us on your favorite podcast app, and give follow us on Twitter or Instagram. @Derekcrim @JohannaMellis @Nkalamb @EndofSportPod www.TheEndofSport.com **For a transcription of this episode please click here. Tim wants to clarify his position on soccer, which leads to an interesting discussion and the conclusion that neither Sportlander is a hater of soccer as much as it may occasionally sound like. We move on briefly to the only NFL news worth chatting about. Cam Newton signs in New England. The Sportlanders differ in their opinion about Cam and his prospects. The Portland Trail Blazers look to finish strong, but has the NBA rigged the process? We're not saying yes, but there aren't a whole lot of no's out there either. How is it looking for baseball's chances in 2020? Although Brian does not cry, he is sad. Tim tries to find the silver lining in all of it as always.

THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW Jennifer Sey became the US national champion in 1986, just seven months after breaking her femur at the 1985 world championships, an injury that led to a change in rules about bars spotting. In 2008, she published her groundbreaking memoir Chalked Up and has since been an advocate for survivors and those fighting against abuse in gymnastics. She produced the documentary Athlete A about the failures of USA Gymnastics to deal with the criminal ex-doctor, which premieres on Netflix this week. We talked with her about what she hopes the general public learns about gymnastics culture from the film, whether the Maggie Haney suspension represents progress or not, why watching Kerri Strug vault in 1996 didn't feel like a glorious moment to her, and balancing the horror of Athlete A with hope by focusing on the triumphs of Maggie Nichols, Rachael Denhollander, Jamie Dantzscher, and the Indy Star journalists. Nassar's boss, William Strampel, has been arrested for insane 1970s sexual misconduct. That's the official charge. Those two MSU trainers who were informed about Nassar and did nothing still work there MSU spent $500K in January monitoring social media accounts of Nassar survivors and journalists. Alex sits down with the voice of The Rock 106.9 WCCC and iRockRadio, Mike Karolyi. It’s been a very eventful couple of years for Karolyi and the beloved station. From being pressured to adopt a classic rock format in 2013, getting bought out by a Christian station in August of 2014 with one final major broadcast and the revival in December of 2014 with iRockRadio, a worldwide internet radio station with an accompanying app. The former FM station made a heroic comeback with the authentic format featuring bands such as Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Sevendust, as well as playing new bands and singles daily. Karolyi takes time to reflect on the past year and a half of iRockRadio and what the reaction and support from listeners and musicians has meant to him. The future for iRockRadio is so bright, you’ll have to pull out a pair of shades!
Simone Biles broke two world records and tied Kim Zmeskal's record for three consecutive national titles. © Christy Linder 2015 National Champion, Laurie Hernandez, teammate 2014 National Champion Jazmyn Foberg, Texas Dreams superstar Ragan Smith and new national team member Sydney Johnson-Scharpf joined us for a live video broadcast on Periscope. Periscope only archives broadcasts for 24 hours but our video will be uploaded to YouTube soon. We asked them what they were most proud of this weekend, new skills, nicknames, Sydney's balance beam crash in warm-ups and what their national team theme song should be for 2015. After the kids went out to party, national team coaches Christian Gallardo and Aimee Boorman joined us. Christian coached Nia Dennis at Buckeye Gymnastics and now coaches Shilese Jones and Olympic all-around champion Gabrielle Douglas. Aimee Boorman is the lifelong coach of two time world champion, Simone Biles. We discussed: The Gabby Douglas strategy, is she playing it safe and waiting to upgrade until she absolutely needs to? We think that would be smart. But is she top three on any even right now. Christian and Aimee explain, "Brestyan's Legs" a plyometric leg circuit that gives Aly ligaments of steel. She spent three years working in entertainment marketing, and later worked in client relations for a boutique investment bank. After several years in the corporate world Kim decided to follow her true passion into fitness. Kim has been an avid athlete since childhood. As a native Houstonian, Kim grew up competing for Karolyi's Gymnastics before she transitioned into cheerleading. Kim was a cheerleader at The University of Texas and was also an instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association. All the while, Kim enjoyed indoor cycling classes as her favorite way to stay fit. While living in NYC Kim discovered the studio fitness scene and the idea was hatched for an indoor cycling studio that offered a full-body workout yet was fun and exciting. Kim returned to UT Austin to pursue her MBA and finesse the idea for what would be Revolution Studio. While at UT she met her future husband and now business partner, Mitch. Together Mitch and Kim own Revolution Studio, Sugar Land's premier indoor cycling studio. The couple just celebrated one year of marriage along with one year of being in business! They live in Bellaire with their neurotic but lovable 11-year old Yorkie named Allie.
