André, The Impulsive Thinker, dives deep into the captivating concept of the interest-based nervous system as described by Dr. William Dodson in Episode 271. Whether you're navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship or just looking to understand more about how ADHD influences daily motivation and engagement, this episode sheds light on why certain tasks captures our attention while others don't. André shares relatable anecdotes and strategies, bringing clarity to ADHD entrepreneurs striving for personal growth and business success. Key Points: 1. Interest-Based vs Importance-Based Nervous System: André explains the distinction between the neurotypical brain's importance-based system and the ADHD brain's interest-based approach, emphasizing the need for tasks to be novel or exciting to maintain engagement. 2. NICUP Acronym: Breaking down the acronym NICUP — Novelty, Interest, Competition, Urgency, Passion — André illustrates how each component plays a crucial role in stimulating the interest-based nerve system, helping ADHD entrepreneurs harness it to their advantage. 3. Adapting Workplace Structures: Drawing from his entrepreneurial experience, André discusses the importance of structuring a business around tasks that energize and engage an ADHD brain, suggesting delegation for less stimulating tasks to maintain productivity and passion. One Question For Listeners: André prompts listeners to contemplate their personal and business tasks, asking, "How can you reshuffle your responsibilities to align more closely with the NICUP elements?" He poses this question to encourage listeners to evaluate whether their daily activities play to their strengths and intrinsic motivations, sparking a reflection on how alignment can drastically improve their effectiveness and satisfaction. By unpacking these concepts, André, The Impulsive Thinker, not only fosters understanding but also inspires actions that resonate well with high-achieving ADHD entrepreneurs aiming for both self-actualization and business growth. André, The Impulsive Thinker welcomes Dr. William Dodson to explore the intricate workings of the ADHD nervous system, particularly focusing on the concept of interest-based activation, as opposed to importance-based, which dominates the neurotypical world. Together, they unpack how understanding and leveraging the unique triggers of the ADHD brain can significantly enhance productivity and satisfaction. Dr. Dodson provides practical insights into how those with ADHD can thrive by structuring their tasks and environments according to what naturally stimulates their engagement, shedding light on why traditional structures often feel restrictive or ineffective to them. Key Points Covered: - The stark difference between interest-based and importance-based nervous systems in people with ADHD. - Techniques and environmental setups that enable ADHD individuals to tap into their 'zone,' enhancing focus and productivity. - The real impact of passion and emotion in driving tasks to completion for those with ADHD. Summary Points: - It's critical to reframe tasks to make them urgent if they are important for others but not for you, which can positively affect how you tackle them. - The importance of acknowledging and leveraging the fact that the ADHD brain operates on novelty, challenge, and interest to stay motivated and engaged. - Discussion around the need for persons with ADHD to create their "owner's manual" to navigate tasks and life, utilizing what works uniquely for them to get into hyperfocus or flow states. One Question For Listeners: How does this concept of the interest-based nervous system change your perception of your ADHD? André, The Impulsive Thinker, asks this to prompt active self-reflection among his listeners, encouraging them to reassess how they structure their work or pursuits to harness their unique cognitive configurations better. This episode is crucial for ADHD entrepreneurs eager to align their work habits more effectively with their neurological preferences, enhancing both their professional output and personal satisfaction. Dive into this enlightening discussion with André and Dr. Dodson and discover how to transform perceived limitations into impactful strengths. Guest: Dr. William Dodson is a distinguished expert in the field of ADHD, known for his innovative and passionate approach to understanding and managing the condition. Having made significant contributions to the ADHD community through educational webinars and resources, Dr. Dodson's work centers on reframing ADHD as a unique configuration of the nervous system, often referring to it as an "interest-based nervous system." This approach has revolutionized the way ADHD is perceived by highlighting its positive aspects and how they can be leveraged for success, especially among entrepreneurs. With a keen interest in the intersection of passion and ADHD, Dr. Dodson has expanded the dialogue around the condition to include discussions on how intrinsic motivations can lead to high achievement and fulfillment. Rejection sensitivity is one of the primary challenges neurodiverse and highly sensitive creatives face in reaching for their dreams. It can cause us to isolate, not seek out opportunities to share or showcase our work, or even keep us from doing creative work in the first place. If we do put ourselves out there, we risk severe mental health consequences when we experience real or perceived rejection, even of the mild kind (and rejection is inevitable on any creative journey!) How can we pursue our creative dreams in this context?  In this episode I discuss the ins and outs of rejection sensitivity and its more extreme form, rejection sensitive dysphoria. You'll hear what it is, why neurodiverse folks are prone to it, what it looks like in real life (using some examples from my own), and some tools I've developed over the last five years of my own creative journey that have helped me go from not wanting to share my fiction at all to live pitching my now completed novel at a conference next week (wish me luck!) Beth was inspired to record this episode after a 45 year old woman with ADHD described her shame and guilt for being too angry and reactive with her 15 year old son. It's important for all of us to recognize our strengths as well as our weaknesses. All of us will make mistakes, and we need to be honest about those as well as our positive qualities. Beth outlines observations from Dr. William Dodson about individuals with ADHD, have a distinctive nervous system, characterized by emotional responsiveness, sensitivity to rejection, and a tendency to activate based on interest (not importance). She also describes some of the common struggles in ADHD relationships, including impulsive behavior, inattentiveness, poor communication skills, trouble empathizing, and mood swings.  Common Pitfalls of ADHD and Marriage How ADHD Shapes your Perceptions Listen to this episode and more: neverperfect.org Follow us on instagram @neverperfectpodcast Please rate and review this podcast. Have you ever felt like you were anticipating rejection as you approached a person, or situation that you believed truly mattered to you? If so, you may be experiencing a form of "Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria" or RSD. RSD is typically associated as a by-product of ADHD. If you grew up continually being told no by those you cared about, then you may find yourself anticipating being told no as an adult. Now we understand that RSD is not simply something that affects those with ADHD, but to an extent, we ALL grew up hearing no when asking for things that we want (to a child, telling them that they can't eat candy for dinner every night, to them, will feel like rejection). The more that we learn about RSD, the more we can understand how to treat it. What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder? Dr. William Dodson Interview

Therapy Show

Dr. William Dodson is a board-certified psychiatrist and, since 1994, has specialized in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder which is more commonly called ADHD. He has written extensively on how the basic research on ADHD can be applied to everyday clinical practice. Dr. Dodson retired in April from active patient care and is currently spending his time completing the manuscript of a textbook on ADHD for clinicians on how to diagnose and treat ADHD from childhood to the elderly.  Incredulously, there is no such textbook, and this will be the first one available for clinicians once it is completed. Dr. Dodson is a former faculty member at Georgetown University and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Dodson is a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and was the 2006 recipient of the Maxwell J. Schleifer Distinguished National Service Award for his work with people with disabilities. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder includes a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, or both. If present, ADHD symptoms of inattention or hyperactivity can make it difficult to perform in school, home, and social settings. Dr. Dodson’s work with ADHD has revealed the hallmark feature of ADHD to be the “inconsistent engagement,” inconsistent performance, inconsistent moods, etc. Activities that were done beautifully yesterday are terribly done today. Usually this is commonly viewed in a very judgmental way that the person with ADHD is “flighty, unreliable, unpredictable, or intentionally not trying.” It is only in the last few years as children with ADHD became articulate adults with ADHD that we have come to understand that there is a consistent pattern to the inconsistency. In a limited number of circumstances people with ADHD could “get in the Zone/get in the Flow” and not have any impairment at all. When an ADHD person is Interested, Challenged, or finds the task Novel or Urgent they snap into the Zone and can literally do anything they try to do. When they lose that sense of ICNU, they are back in La La land again. The conditions that engage, organize, and motivate the other 90% of human beings (Importance, Rewards, and Consequences) never ever work for people with ADHD. Individuals with an ADHD nervous systems ALWAYS use Interest, Challenge, Novelty, and Urgency and can NEVER use Importance rewards and consequences in daily life to get the tasks of their lives done. The second defining feature of ADHD is the special problems of how people regulate their emotional lives.  People who have an ADHD style nervous system tend to experience their own lives in an intense and passionate way that can be exhausting to themselves and their loved ones.  To make matters even more difficult, people with ADHD can also have episodes of overwhelming, almost unbearable emotional pain that are triggered by their perception that they have been rejected, criticized, or fallen short of their own expectations.  While no one likes being rejected or criticized, the experience of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (also called emotional dysregulation in Europe) is much, much more intensely painful and disruptive to their lives than similar events are to Neurotypical people without ADHD. The combination of the emotional component of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria and the cognitive component of an Interest-Based Nervous System can explain virtually all of the manifestations of adolescent and adult ADHD. So, in the end the only person who sees the evidence of ADHD firsthand is you. In the end the only person who must completely be sure that you have an ADHD nervous system is you as well.

Introduction ADHD is typically considered a disorder of attention and focus. There are various other traits everyone knows are linked – officially, hyperactivity and “behavior problems”; unofficially, anger and thrill-seeking – but most people consider these to be some sort of effect of the general attention deficit. Dr. William Dodson pushes a different conception, where one of the key features of ADHD is “rejection-sensitive dysphoria”, ie people with the condition are much less able to tolerate social rejection, and more likely to find it unbearable and organize their lives around avoiding it. He doesn’t deny the attention and focus symptoms; he just thinks that rejection sensitivity needs to be considered a key part of the disorder. I say “Dr. William Dodson pushes”, but this requires a little research before it becomes apparent. What a Google search shows is just a bunch of articles saying that rejection sensitivity is a key part of ADHD that gets ignored by non-expert psychiatrists and that it’s important to educate patients about it and include it in any treatment plan. My conclusion is that all of these articles can be traced back to Dr. Dodson or people inspired by Dr. Dodson, of which there are many. The ADHD patient community has gotten really into this and pushed it in a lot of support groups and patient communities and so on, where it is repeated uncritically as “an important ADHD feature psychiatrists often forget about”. But the genesis is just Dr. Dodson saying so, with limited formal evidence.

CHAP - Chapelizod Heritage Association Podcast

The village of Chapelizod is located between the River Liffey and the steeply sloping hills leading up to Ballyfermot to the south and the Fifteen Acres of the Phoenix Park to the north. A map created sometime between 1655 and 1666, as part of Sir William Petty’s Down Survey of Ireland, shows Chapelizod with a church, a structure at the location of the King’s House, two mills, and the ford of St. Laurence – but no bridge – crossing the river between the two ancient roads leading westwards out of Dublin city. The village of St. Laurence was located on the south bank of the River Liffey in between the ford and Palmerstown. In 1662 the newly appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, James Butler the Duke of Ormonde, initiated the conversion of the ancient King’s House into the Viceregal Lodge (the residence of the Lord Lieutenant before Áras an Uachtaráin was constructed in 1751). The Duke of Ormonde contracted a man named William Dodson to enlarge the building, and around the same time a letter was sent from Dodson to James Butler, which contained an invoice of 195 guineas, 1 shilling and 7 pennies for “making one new bridge at Chappell Izard”. Completed in the 1660s, this is the oldest known masonry bridge built across the River Liffey in County Dublin. The Liffey served as the backbone of Chapelizod's industrial past. In 1380 King Richard II of England granted control of the fishery, weir, and millrace of Chapelizod to the Priory of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, a monastic order based in Kilmainham. Flax was dried on the fields that extended along the southern banks of the river, before being used to weave cloth in the mills that were built along the river banks. Later, there were even attempts to manufacture silk in Chapelizod! Much later in time the Phoenix Park Distillery was built alongside the river, drawing upon the Liffey for its hydraulic power and as a source of the key ingredient for their drink.People have long valued the River Liffey for its natural beauty as much as its industrial usefulness, as expressed by James Fraser in his Hand Book for Travellers of Ireland, published in 1844:“The road from Chapelizod to this town [Lucan] may be agreeably varied, by keeping the left bank of the Liffey. The scenery, which is purely rural, is, perhaps, the best of that character around the city; and equal to any part of the Liffey's circuitous course. The high banks, the neat villas, and rustic cottages, with their accompanying plantations; — the mixed cultivation, with the extensive fields of strawberries, mingling with all the variety of crops which market gardens exhibit; the meandering of the Liffey, and the various rapids occasioned by damming its waters in order to propel the machinery connected with the small factories along its course; the verdant meads which occupy the sinuosities of the narrow valley, and the undulating road which is carried over the summits of the little hills, all combine to render this a very charming stretch of rural scenery.”The Strawberry Beds extend for some two miles along the north bank of the river upstream from Dodson’s Bridge. From as far back as 1837 this area was famous for the small, pale, and exquisite strawberries that grew along the steep slopes of the valley. Holidaymakers would descend to Chapelizod and beyond to enjoy these delicious fruits, frequenting taverns and hotels like The Wren’s Nest and, from 1865, the Angler’s Rest. The strawberry plants sadly disappeared in the early years of the 20th century. The Liffey also provided ample opportunities for fishing throughout Chapelizod’s history, both upstream and downstream from Dodson’s bridge. The southern bank of the Liffey up as far as Ballyfermot was a popular site for sports like duck shooting, which continued until around 1950, and in more recent times the river is used by the many rowing clubs that line its banks to the east.Dodson’s Bridge and the Liffey have also provided literary inspiration for many of the writers that have lived in Chapelizod. The bridge served as the setting of Peter Brien’s ghostly encounters in a short story named The Spectre Lovers, written by Sheridan Le Fanu in 1851 and published in the Dublin University Magazine. The River Liffey was later personified by Jame’s Joyce’s character Anna Livia Plurabelle in Finnegans Wake, a character no doubt inspired by Joyce’s days spent in Chapelizod walking across the bridge and along the river banksOn June 16th, 1982, the bridge was renamed as Anna Livia Bridge to mark the centenary of the birth of James Joyce. Today, the Anna Livia Bridge continues to serve as a vital fording point between the northern and southern areas of the village, and a significant link between north and south Dublin, and it continues to provide one of the best views of the River Liffey from within the village.Further Reading:Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1851) Ghost Stories of Chapelizod.
