Joel and Judy Linton, missionaries and church planters in Yilan County, Taiwan, join Pastor Tim Bayly. Judy recounts the immense suffering her family endured at the hands of political operatives by Chiang Kai-shek. She shares her own harrowing experience of being stabbed by an assassin and her subsequent conversion to Christ. Joel describes his role as a pastor at their church plant and the challenges of working in rural Taiwan. Throughout the conversation, they delve into the concept of Christian nationalism and its relevance to Taiwan. ***Here's the latest newsletter sent by the Lintons to their supporters:Taiwan Prayer Letter of Joel and Judy LintonApril 2026Dear praying friends and family,Happy Resurrection Day!, which in one sense I could say every Lord's Day. This year we celebrated with one of our supporting churches as we have been support-raising in the U.S for two months. We've already spoken at 5 churches and we are planning to visit 6 more in five states. I need to increase my own support levels, and I'm hoping to pick up at least two more supporting churches. Also we are raising money for our Yilan church's building fund. And we have one other reason to be in the U.S. as our third daughter Ashlyn is graduating from college. Last week we got to see her perform a Rachmaninov piano concerto with a full orchestra. It was amazing! And it was the first time in two years our entire family was able to be together. (We took a picture together after the concert. See attached.)Please pray for out time here. After driving back down from Michigan, a letter was waiting for me in the mailbox: I have been called up for jury duty on a capital murder case. I wrote the court and the judge requesting to be excused but have still not heard back. If I have to serve jury duty, that will affect so many plans. I'm also concerned about being able to attend Ashlyn's graduation. Please pray that the judge will excuse me.Pray also for Liam Carr and his family. They are our newest Mission Sending Service long-term missionaries and are awaiting Taiwan's government to issue them a visa so they can move to Taiwan. The Carrs have also been raising support and are not yet to full levels. Pray for their move this year and their adjustment to living in Yilan County and full-time language study. Please pray for K.B. Church while we are away. Pray that God will work in each of those attending the church to become more mature. Pray that more will become Christians. And pray for more coworkers. Our greatest thanks to you all of you.In Christ's keeping.Joel for the LintonsJoel, Judy, Faith (and Carver), Charis, Ashlyn, Saorsa, and Seren.———To support us: Please make checks out to "Mission Sending Service" mark "for LINTON support" on the memo line.To donate to our church building fund, please make checks out to "Mission Sending Service" mark "for church building” on the memo linePlease mail to:Mission Sending Service111 Knights Bridge RoadFlorence, AL 35630U.S.A.Or please call Elizabeth Marchman at: (256) 762-3117 in order to arrange direct deposit. We are still investigating online giving options.Mission Sending Service is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Even the most conservative churches today are filled with rebellion against authority. Why? Because we have lost the doctrine of the Fatherhood of God. As fatherhood died, so the fear of God has died, and so authority has died. Having lost the doctrine of God's Fatherhood, we simplistically bounce between what we understand to be the only two options: absolute autocracy and absolute mutuality.Mentioned in the show:Alexander Mitscherlich, Society without the father: A contribution to social psychology; (1969).John Calvin, "Paradise Comes with a Caveat: The Meaning of the Two Trees”; preached Friday, September 22, 1559, on text Genesis 2:15-17 (sermon ten in his series on Genesis):"Now God's will is unknown to us of itself. He must make it known by His word so that we can discern from what He says what pleases Him and what He condemns. That, then, is why God in the beginning gives our father Adam leave to use everything He put in his hand except the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. Now, although we do not know why God commanded or forbade one thing or another, He must nonetheless hold such authority over us that we yield to His simple statement, for one aspect of obedience lies in the fact that we are not wise in our own conceits and do not bring ourselves to talking back and asking, "Who moved God to do this? Why did he do it?” If we engage in such disputes, we disparage God's majesty. When a master orders one of his servants, or a prince one of his officers, to do what he tells him, he will want to be heard and have his order executed without the servant's knowing why. Now if mortal men ask for such a privilege and such a right over those who are subject to them, what will the situation be by comparison when we are dealing with God! God's authority and right, then, are similarly diminished when we are unwilling to hear patiently what He commands and when we do not concede to His prohibitions without question. In short, if we want to be obedient to God, as is proper, we must in no way question Him to learn what motivated Him to approve one thing and to condemn another, and we must be content to know that He has spoken and the decision has been made and that we are not permitted to resist it in any way."Screenshot of excerpt from Tim Bayly, Daddy Tried: Overcoming the Failures of Fatherhood (2016): (here) ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Since he'd spent his life serving as an interim pastor, I wondered if Larry was a normal interim, or a good one? Asking him how he handled longterm conflicts he discovered in churches he was asked to serve as interim pastor, Larry said it was his habit to expose the church's conflict right out of the gate.“How,” I asked?“The first thing I do is change the order of worship. That brings the power players out into the open.”Couldn't believe he said or did that. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Pastor Tim and Andrew Henry discuss Helen Andrews' article "The Great Feminization," in which she presents this thesis: "Wokeness is not a new ideology, an outgrowth of Marxism, or a result of post-Obama disillusionment. It is simply feminine patterns of behavior applied to institutions where women were few in number until recently."Is she right? Has God made men and women different? Does His Word clearly define the differences? Has the church been faithful to uphold His Word as our standard? The episode concludes with a discussion of the feminization and bowdlerization of English translations of Scripture. Also mentioned:Carol Gilligan's In a Different Voice (1982)Andrew Jackson, speaking of Marshall's opinion in Worcester v. To love God is to be a Christian...Now "man's" knavish interest consists in creating millions and millions of Christians, the more the better, all men if possible; for thus the whole difficulty of being a Christian vanishes, being a Christian and being a man amounts to the same thing, and we find ourselves where paganism ended. From Andrew: Heartwork is a journey within to tap into vital resources for today! Thank you Paul for helping me get the word out about my new book: Heartwork. Many counselors treat depression and anxiety by attempting to locate the root cause and process those feelings. While there is nothing per say wrong with this approach, I submit there is a kinder and self-validating way to calm the worry mind, while boosting the higher reasoning. Not All Tesla is Tesla. What Tesla means to people has shifted drastically. It's a shibboleth in our culture. From the darling of the green left to the “Swasticar,” you're now considered a villain if you drive a Tesla, particularly a Cybertruck. We don't understand Elon Musk until we get a grip on South Africa and her unapologetic males. South Africans have not been run through the American/European "plastic extruder" that removes manhood from them. We as a nation have lost manhood. South African males typically have this attitude: there is absolutely nothing that they can't do. It's an endearing trait. There are many things you can say about Elon, but he does demonstrate irrefragable masculinity. Intrinsic to that trait is a can-do positive confidence. There is an optimism about him that causes him in most things to come through.Purchasing a Tesla used to be a way of widening your phylacteries. It was a symbol of progressive ideology. Now it is a right-wing middle finger. Being a Tesla owner is a legitimate risk to your safety. It is increasingly possible that the left is going to lose their mind so badly that they are going to create a revolution. What is going to happen? Will the center hold? And then there is the woke right and their millenarian crusader vengeance fantasies. There is a fundamental truth about violence: it is like fire. Once you start it, you can't control it.***Mentioned in the show: the evolving simplicity of SpaceX's Raptor engine. This video covers his interview at Satellite 2020:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD0bcsAXaic***Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. So often we attempt to be aspirational in the setting of traditions in our families. What does that mean? It means we work hard to build traditions meant to project to others the "perfection" of our marriages, our childrearing, and our homesteads. Rather than cave to the pressure to portray the perfect home with the perfect traditions for the perfect children in the perfect marriage with the perfect timing and gravitas, let your traditions develop more naturally, from your unique quirks and talents. Andrew's family, he says, has a tradition of staying up late at night each winter vomiting. At least they can laugh about it! Tim and his family sing the Appleseed song with a Beethoven-esque number of amens to conclude. Children love these simple, easygoing traditions and will pass them on to their own families in due time. Lighten up. Let the traditions develop naturally and...awkwardly. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Pastors Tim and Juergen discuss the latter's education in Germany and his move to the United States to teach economics at Indiana University's (now named) Kelley School of Business. Juergen recounts how he and his wife, Ilsa, came to faith through the witness and compassion of members of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA). The discussion then turns to the discipline of economics, Juergen's working relationships with various financial institutions, the fiscal crises of European nations, the harm done to Russia by American economists, and Juergen's early experiences with online education at IU—all back in the nineties. Today, there is a near-monopoly of online education for earning an MBA at Kelley. Tim and Juegen discuss the difference between in-person and online education for undergrad as opposed to grad students, the utility of community colleges, the shrinking enrollment at IU caused by demographics and the change in our foreign relations with China, and the growing proportion of women (as opposed to men) enrolled in institutions of higher education and professional schools today. They end with a lengthy discussion of things parents and their sons and daughters should consider in choosing a college, ending with the limitations and benefits of small and big, and Christian and secular, colleges and universities. ***Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. Around 1980, people around the world began speaking of "human flourishing." In 2000, the frequency of the phrase's use in media flourished exponentially. Be suspicious of new words and phrases taking the world by storm. As Chesterton said, before you take a fence down you must determine why it was erected in the first place. New words and phrases often arise to replace and relegate truths that are no longer deemed to be kind or helpful.***We mention Tim Keller's statement about “human flourishing."We also mention Tim Keller's response to Covenant Theological Seminary students' questioning whether he preaches against homosexuality.Andrew mentions a section of The Screwtape Letters.***Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. We have failed to teach our children and our culture the creation mandates: "God blessed them; and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth'" (Gen. 1:28). In this episode, Pastor Tim Bayly is joined by his son, Joseph (Senior Pastor at Christ Church in Cincinnati), and son-in-law, Lucas Weeks (College and Administrative Pastor at Trinity Reformed Church in Bloomington, IN) to discuss parenting. We often think that our parenting is a failure if we have to resort to authority. That attitude is foolishness and an abandonment of God's rules for parenting. Our fears and modern psychologists have trained us to believe that authority is antithetical to having your child's heart. We must be reminded that if we intend to hold on to our children, obedience to God is the only way. No one would deny that mothers and fathers have duties regarding their children, but many are willing to dispute that children have duties regarding their parents. Parents ought to serve and love their children, but also children ought to serve and love their parents. ***Mentions during the show:First, the podcast starts out talking about this book: Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peersby Gordon Neufeld and Gabor MatéSecond, we mention this book:Shepherding a Child's Heartby Ted TrippThird, I read from this book:The Thing (the chapter I read from is titled, “The Drift from Domesticity”)by G. History changes very quickly. Read the book of Esther. We've witnessed numerous surprising and sobering changes in the past two weeks. The performance of President Biden during the debate makes us question who allowed for (or orchestrated) such a sad spectacle. What if an assassin's bullet had killed former President Trump? What effect will this event have on his soul?Mentioned in the episode: Donald Trump was being interviewed, and asked what he thought about death—whether he was worried about it—he responded: “No. I'm fatalistic and I protect myself as well as anybody can. I prepare for things. But ultimately we all end up going. No. I don't believe in reincarnation, heaven, or hell—but we go someplace. Do you know, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out where.” (Chicago Tribune, March 12, 1989, page 10, Section 5)***Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. It must be understood that the Christian faith is never owned by any King or any party. A constant temptation of Christians is to be programmed by personalities. Rather than taking cheap, easy, stupid, and faithless shortcuts, we ought to be taught how to think. Primarily and tragically, we forget the doctrine of the sinfulness of all men (even our heroes) and the doctrine of the Fall. Learn in this episode what it means to think as a Christian, not as a partisan. The Lord rebukes His people for such sin through the prophet Haggai: "Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 'Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?'" (Haggai 1:3-4) On the other hand, there are hucksters in church leadership who love money more than they love the sheep. They refuse to shepherd for fear the tithes and offerings will dwindle. Pastor Tim & Andrew Henry discuss money at church and aim pastors and sheep toward faithfulness. Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. Parachurch ministries, political causes, and entrepreneurial enterprises seduce good men away from giving their lives to the Church and her pastoral work. How do we attract young men to the work of the Church during the formative years of their lives? College professors successfully shape their students, often in perverse ways. Why do pastors lack a similar zeal? What must pastors do to identify and draw men into working with Christ's sheep? As mentioned in the show, please check out the Psalm setting by My Soul Among Lions. Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors Who Say What They Think. The parachurch was an innovation of entrepreneurially-minded Christians during the twentieth century. They considered the Church to be old and in the way. Efficiency was the gospel need of the day, so cumbersome mechanisms like denominations, ordination, and church discipline were bypassed. Pastor Bayly and Andrew Henry discuss the rise of the parachurch, the glory of the Church, and how reforming the Church—with all its ugly but necessary division and doctrinal distinctions—is the genuine need of the day.Read Bayly's The Church ReformedOut of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors who say what they think. There are very few places as divisive in today's church as the potluck lunch. When visitors come to our churches we are likely to hear them proclaim about their food orthodoxy before they say anything about their theology or church background. Tim and Andrew offer some helpful commentary about how to keep food from dividing the church. Show NotesThe man Tim was trying to remember mentioned during the recording was Jerome Irving Rodale founder of the magazine, Organic Farming and Gardening, and also Rodale Press. The talk show host Dick Cavett tells the story:MAY 3, 2007, 6:33 PMWhen That Guy Died on My Show (interview with Dick Cavett)When I'm doing an appearance somewhere and taking questions from the audience, I can always count on: “Tell about the guy who died on your show!” I generally say, “I will, and I promise you that in a few moments you will be laughing.” (That gets a laugh.) I go on: “First, who would be the logical person to drop dead on a television show? A health expert.” (Laugh.) I go on to explain that he was Jerome I. Rodale, the publisher of (among other things) Today's Health Magazine. (Laugh.) The irony gets thicker. He'd been on the cover of The New York Times Magazine that Sunday, and we needed one more guest. He was a slight man, and looked like Leon Trotsky with the little goatee. He was extremely funny for half an hour, talking about health foods, and as a friendly gesture he offered me some of his special asparagus, boiled in urine. I think I said, “Anybody's we know?” while making a mental note to have him back.I brought out the next guest, Pete Hamill, whose column ran in The New York Post. Rodale moved “down one” to the couch. As Pete and I began to chat, Mr. Rodale suddenly made a snoring sound, which got a laugh.Comics would sometimes do that for a laugh while another comic was talking, pretending boredom. His head tilted to the side as Pete, in close-up as it happened, whispered audibly, “This looks bad.”The audience laughed at that. I didn't, because I knew Rodale was dead.To this day, I don't know how I knew. I thought, “Good God, I'm in charge here. What do I do?” Next thing I knew I was holding his wrist, thinking, I don't know anything about what a wrist is supposed to feel like.Next, in what felt like a quick film cut, I was standing at the edge of the stage, saying, “Is there a doctor in the … (pause) … audience?”Two medical interns scrambled onto the stage. The next “shot” that I recall was of Rodale flat on the floor. The interns had loosened his shirt and his pants, and were working on him. He was the ghastly pale of a plumber's candle.Other memories that seem to come in stop-frame sequence:- Two stewardesses in the front row who'd been winking and joking with me during the commercial breaks were now crying. I guess from their training and having seen emergencies, they knew the score.- Watching the awareness that this might just be real start to roll backward through the audience. Their reluctant awareness that this was not part of the show.- A camera man standing on his tiptoes, his camera pointing almost straight down on Rodale and the “action.”- Someone running onstage with a small tank of oxygen with a crucial part missing.- The bizarre feeling of denial that this must be part of the show. After all, we were in makeup and there were stage lights and a band and an audience that had been laughing and clapping only moments earlier.- Pete Hamill amidst the turmoil, as an ambulance crew arrived, calmly and professionally making notes in his reporter's notebook. (He got a memorable column for the next day.)- Finding myself in a fog in my dressing room, discovering a few strange objects in my pocket that someone must have handed me. A ChapStick, a watch and some keys, clearly from the dead man's pockets.- A voice in the alley as I got in the car: “Hey, Dick, was that for real?”I went home and looked up Robert Frost's poem “Out, Out —,” which contains the words, “… And they, since they/ Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.”The next morning, I called my mentor and former boss, Johnny Carson. The story was all over the news. I asked Johnny how I could ever do another show. “It's like Kennedy's death, isn't it, Richard?” he said. “You wondered how anybody could ever do another show. This won't sound very profound but you just go out and do it. And you'll get a couple of surprises.”That night I told the whole story in the (comedy) monologue spot. No laughs then. I dreaded coming back from commercial. No one referred to the tragic happening, and everything meant to be funny got what seemed clearly to be larger than usual laughs. This, it turned out, was the main surprise Johnny knew was in store for me. Everyone was eager to get back to laughs. This is the topper: Upon warily deciding to view the sorry event a few weeks later, along with my staff, we noticed three things that, incredibly, no one had recalled Rodale's saying: “I'm in such good health [he was 72] that I fell down a long flight of stairs yesterday and I laughed all the way.” “I've decided to live to be a hundred.” And the inevitable “I never felt better in my life!” (The gods and their sense of humor.)From accessed February 17, 2024.Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors who say what they think. John Ensor (President of PassionLife), Ben Sulser (of Church of the King in Evansville, IN, and Ensor's son-in-law), and Tim Bayly continue their conversation on abortion. The first half of the conversation roamed afield as we discussed singleness, womanhood, manhood, abortion, being pro-life, preaching, and the Church. This half turns to abortion, specifically, beginning with the difference between the responses of Christians in China and Christians in Europe and America to preaching that opens up the guilt of abortion. We also discuss the criminalization of abortion, incrementalism vs. abolitionism, the "safety net" of Roe v. Wade, and contraception. * * *PassionLife's mission is to work "as a prolife global missions partner to missionaries and indigenous Christian leaders, where the plague of abortion, infanticide and gendercide is especially concentrated."Evangel Presbytery's Abortion and the Church—mentioned in this episode—is available in electronic format here (for free) and in hard copy here (for pay).Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors who say what they think. It is hard to say no in any context—especially to our children. Saying no is perceived as a denial of the power of God, a moralistic unkindness, or a lack of compassion. Regardless, we must be prepared to say no—as God does to us in His Word. In this episode of Out of Our Minds, Mary Lee Bayly joins her husband and our other fearless host, Andrew Henry. Along the way, they discuss the difficulty and importance of saying no to job opportunities, promotions, and our children's opportunities (music, sports, etc.). The "no" rooted in Christ is part of our mission. There are times when couples should take defensive actions against their children for the sake of the marriage. Husbands must be prepared to say no; a husband who never says no to his wife is refusing to acknowledge his stewardship of the marriage. These topics and much more...Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors who say what they think. For the love of Christ and His Church.Out of Our Minds is a production of New Geneva Academy. Our children are in danger everywhere, both outside and inside the home. Some parents are oblivious to physical dangers; others desire to wrap their children from head to toe in bubble wrap before they send them out to play. Overprotection can sissify children, especially boys. Negligence and foolish risk-taking can kill them. Life is precious and can end in a moment. That truth must factor into our parenting. Nevertheless, we must protect the ability of our children to learn wisdom by getting hurt.Physical dangers are not the only dangers our children face. Spiritual and sexual dangers are also constant. One of the best protections we can provide our children is a deep understanding of Original Sin. Subsequent episodes will delve more into the sexual dangers.PS: In this episode, the book Tim couldn't remember was John Eldridge's “Wild at Heart.” Released in 2001, the book sold over four million copies in the U.S. alone, starting the man's movement still thriving today among conservative Christians. The Religious News Service summarized Eldridge's message: "The book sought to empower men to realize 'dreams of being the hero, of beating the bad guys, of doing daring feats and rescuing the damsel in distress'.”Out of Our Minds Podcast: Pastors who say what they think.
