Original Release Date: Monday 24 February 2025    Description:   Your friends in podcasting have two more shows before they make their way (separately) to Europe and reconvene in Denmark! So, understandably, they have a full discussion agenda for this week's show. They discuss the theft of thousands of art works from Venice and how a 1954 cinematic masterpiece helped in the reconstruction of one of the landmark buildings of that city. They discuss TWO "Live Events of the Week" and in so doing, discuss Shakespeare, Armin Shimmerman, and two of the most legendary Los Angeles stage actors. In "Celebrity Deaths" a chart-topping singer-turned-elected official gets remembered, as does a prolific character actor, a groundbreaking African filmmaker, and an influential poet and multimedia artist of the Beat era. The "SNL50" special gets discussed, as does an excellent new sports documentary series on Netflix. Finally, this weekend's Spirit Awards (honoring the best in independent cinema) gets analyzed, and one of the most acclaimed animated films of 2024, one of the most acclaimed international films of 2024, and one of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2024 all get reviewed.

Pull out two strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum and submit them in the little box to listen to our episode on the Farenghi, Star Trek The Next Generation's first attempt at a recurring villain race which went incredibly poorly for everyone concerned. From their first appearance in the show when they act like incredibly hyperactive gerbils in the The Last Outpost to their most recent focus in Star Trek Prodigy where we find out more about Dal's past and the conflict between his old life and his new life in First Con-tact to one of Deep Space Nine's many attempts to bring nuance to the species in Family Business when Quark and Rom have to deal with their mother Ishka's becoming involved in what passes for First Stage Feminism in a culture where women can't wear clothes. What a perfect alien race to talk about the day before the British Election gets the money grabbing Tory's out of power after 14 years! Who says Star Trek isn't political? If they do, make them put three strips of latinum in the appropriate hole! EPISODES INCLUDED: The Last Outpost (13:39), First Con-tact (43:35), Family Business (01:03:43) Talking Points Include: They Live and Ironic 4th July movies (we didn't watch ‘They Live,' but instead we watched ‘Slap Shot'), we briefly touch on the inevitable rousting of the Torys, the unfortunate antisemitic coding of the Farenghi, BE INTIMIDATED BY MILES' ARMS! The Robocop vs. The Terminator crossover by Dark Horse Comics, (CORRECTION: Frank Miller HAD started writing and drawing ‘Sin City' the year before) the Monster of the Week RPG, back to the Season One well of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Bee-Gees, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam, where IS the Enterprise's Engineer? Geordi's weird ‘oooooh-wee!' could the Farenghi ever have been a threat? Doctor Who's own Farneghi the Slitheen and how they killed Charlie's interest in Doctor Who back in 2005, the Farenghi design and how it's immediately undercut, Armin Shimmerman giving some great vibes this early on, how this remakes ‘Errand of Mercy,' Captain Picard does a swear, that one episode of ‘The X-Files' what Stephen King wrote contained a swear, Transformers: The Movie dropping a ‘S-Bomb,' Are we actually watching ‘The Mighty Boosh? We want Matt Berry to be a Star Trek Alien, Adele (sound goblins ate anything we had to say further on Adele, apologies for the weird edit) WHY IS ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS' the US Number One in January? Kid Kapici, Sea Power is a Hometown Band, Dal has a Yondu. Charlie is a freak, Charlie also likes to equate Dal from ‘Prodigy' to Poochie, Prodigy excelling at non-humanoid aliens, cartoons for kids these days don't have as much as a reset button as they used to, Prodigy finally does a Starfleet, Warren Ellis and Brian Michael Bendis style decompression in relation to Picard, eventually Charlie will learn how to pronounce René Auberjonois' surname, Living Joy, Montell Jordan and THIS IS HOW WE DO IT, Charlie's love of KINECT Dance Games, Jake Sisko is disturbingly obsessed with his dad's love life, Quark is the lone conservative in a strangely progressive Farenghi family, THE RETURN OF JEFFREY COMBS, Farenghinar is the future tech-bros want, (CULTURAL NOTE: Rounders is the British equivalent of ‘Baseball,') how old is Jake Sisko? At this point during the episode, the weekly Madison Tornado siren test starts going off, Charlie deals with his own FCA in real life, Farenghi culture and their home world is almost set up to be a Gilliam-esque nightmare, once more a reminder that Miles didn't watch ‘Rejoined' for the Trill episode, this isn't a Farenghi Comedy Episode.

And where does Benjamin Sisko, Star Trek's first black captain, land on their list of favorite captains? Michael Piller is responsible for bringing Star Trek: The Next Generation from pale spinoff of a cult TV show to pop culture phenomenon. And he got first crack at a post-Gene Roddenberry Star Trek future. Meet Sisko, Kira, Dax, O'Brien, Quark, Odo, Jake, Bashir, and many more as the Star Trek format shifts from deep space exploration to strong character and cultural work in a show that paved the way for the turn of the century Golden Age of Television. Phil Morris - Trek Untold Encore One of the folks on my big list of guests to get when I first started this podcast included this man, Phil Morris. Last week, we flashed back to what was originally the fifth episode of this podcast with an interview with his sister Iona. This week we jump ahead to episode 26, where we spoke with this incredibly accomplished character actor whose resume speaks for itself. Enjoy this classic episode you may have never heard before: Phil Morris is another of those actors whose face you've seen many times (200 to be exact) but whose name you may not have known until today. His father is the famous Greg Morris from the original "Mission: Impossible" show, and we spoke with his sister Iona Morris a few months back on this show, so acting is in his family's blood! Phil has been in the Star Trek franchise FIVE times, starting when he was a child in the original series in the season 1 episode "Miri." He explains how he got cast on the show and the scene they didn't warn any of the kids about! Over 20 years later, Phil returned to Trek and worked face to face with William Shatner in "Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock" and recalls the brilliant piece of direction Leonard Nimoy told him before his scene. Fast forward a few years later, and Phil made his way to DS9 in "Looking for Par'Mach in All The Wrong Places," where he tells us about becoming a Klingon, learning to fight with a batleth against Armin Shimmerman, and being directed by Andrew Robinson AKA Garak. One season later, he returned as the Third Remata Klan in "Rocks and Shoals" as a Jem'Hadar, and Phil tells us what it's like to work with the imposing Avery Brooks.  Finally, his "Star Trek Voyager" appearance as Lt. John Kelly in "One Small Step," what it was like being directed by his acting school classmate Robert Picardo, and what big emotions came up filming this episode. Plus, being Jackie Chiles on "Seinfeld," working with Angela Lansbury on "Murder, She Wrote" and Will Smith on "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," what he learned from his famous father and how the two of them got along on set for the "Mission: Impossible" reboot in 1988, Vandal Savage in Justice League animated series, and being on Doom patrol as Cyborg's dad, Silas Stone, and the story of the worst day he ever had on the job! Today's guest is only one degree of separation away from Patrick Stewart, and Kermit, the Frog! Juliana Donald got her start in Hollywood with a major role in "The Muppets Take Manhattan." She followed it up with appearances in many other shows and films en route to appearing three times in the Star Trek universe.Juliana first appeared in the season three episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" titled "A Matter of Perspective," and followed it up a few years later in the third season "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode where she seductively rubbed Quark's ears in "Prophet Motive." You guys, Martok HATES Kor. When Kor shows up at Worf's drunk in the middle of the night and asks him to do a favor so he can die with dignity, what is a bro supposed to do? Progressive Left vs the old liberals: Worf is Peter Daou.  This 90s show is all about post Trump politics, right?  How many people or characters can we compare the cast of this DS9 episode to?  What are the sexual mores of Klingon culture?  Klingon military school is like getting into West Point back in olden times.  We're still unsure what a Dahar master is.  The house of Kor, past and present.  Future? Maybe  not.  Oh, that Dax B plot.  Not our favorite. The questions one gets tired of answering.  What aspects of Dax are the writers retreading?  Did Jadzia's non warriors death get expunged?  How entwined are Kor's accomplishments and his noble bloodline?  Klingon Tucker Carlson?  Peter Daou stories are Worf stories.  Mean Girls in the cafeteria.  Oh yeah? Take some Shakespeare, bullies.  Remember Bobby Bacala?  What if the Sopranos…  no, nevermind.  That Ronald D. Moore can put a script together, even if it is a basic “blaze of glory” story.  Martok doesn't like people eating in his car.  Wade wrote down a lot of Klingon. Nunek! What does Armin Shimmerman have to say about Quark this season?  What do we?  The past was so fraught, we're scared to just name some characters.  Klingon Social Security and suicide squads.  We're going to disrupt dying in battle.     Let us know what you think by joining the conversation on Patreon! patreon.com/kickersofelves Or shoot us an email at the ol' hotline number. 917 408 3898

Howdy and Happy New Year from Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast!  In typical fashion, this greeting isn't coming until the second week of the new year. We kick off the show with Skype visit from comedian, podcaster, and friend of the show Paul Mecurio. He's going to be at The Punchline in San Francisco this week, so if you're in the Bay Area, be sure to check him out! (I'll be at the Wednesday night show and will be packing some of our Succotash magnetic buttons - just ask me for one!) I'll be meeting up with Paul and doing a face-to-face sitdown for a longer chat which we'll feature on an upcoming epi. Paul's opening intro with me is only a few minutes of this show, which means we've got time for a bunch of clips, our Burst O' Durst - in which political comedian Will Durst gives us his predictions for 2014, an ad for Henderson's Auld Lang Slacks, our Tweetsack segment, and the pilot episode for Adam Barker's new Batfella pod series! As I announce in this week's episode, our Honorary Associate Producer Tyson Saner is no longer honorary, he's actually the Official Associate Producer! While there's no salary or benefits that come with the gig, we're honored to have his services in harvesting clips from the vast field of comedy podcasts out there. And he'll be co-hosting an upcoming episode soon, so you'll get to hear from the man himself. It’s a nicely put-together interview show and recently the guest was none other than friend-of-Succotash Travis Clark from the Tiny Odd Conversations podcast. (I have my own interview that I haven’t had a chance to get to that I did with Travis and his wife Brandi when I was in LA for the Podfest last October. I'll post it soon. I promise! This Ain’t IowaI’m often talking about how vast the world of podcasting is and comedy podcasts comprise a major continent of that world. It’s so big that it’s hard to see – or hear – everything until it’s too late. This Ain’t Iowa is a podcast out of Las Vegas, hosted by comedian Brian Mollica and it’s been chugging along since 2006. But now that chugging is coming to an end. Brian’s doing his “farewell tour” of the show, as he calls it, and has been having past co-hosts and regular guests calling and dropping in. One of those guest was a guy who was only ever identified on the show as “Wooden Spoon” and Spoon seems to have a somewhat colored and checkered past on the show. Pop My CultureWe haven’t heard from the Pop My Culture podcast for a while, with Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland - oh, they've been podcasting, we just haven't played a clip from them recently - but we’re going to hear from them now, along with their guest Armin Shimmerman, who you might know from his role as Quark on Deep Space Nine. Break Room PartyI first caught wind of the Break Room Party podcast on Twitter so I decided to check ‘em out. At first, it sounded to me like one of those dreaded “shootin’ the shit” shows I’ve kind of come to fear having to slog through but I hung in there.  Sure enough, the four hosts – Josh, Brandon, Trey & Ryan – didn’t disappoint. What they lack in comedy chops they make up for in comraderie and good natured ribbing. PLUS they dispense business advice. Every episode’s a different topic and this time it was about The Interview. The boys got off into a sideline about How To Turn The Interview Around. UttabullAnother show that came via a Twitter reference is the first podcast that I’d heard of that originates from the Isle of Man in the British Isles. Liam and Jason are the hosts of Uttabull. (Or, rather, Liam seems to be THE host while Jason USUALLY shows up.) They do a segment called Jason’s News and that’s where I pulled this clip from, as the gents get into a story from somewhere in Poland. Hangin’ OutcastTwitter was once again the conduit for me virtually meeting up with the Hangin’ Outcast podcast. These guys – Alex and Justin - are located in the Heart of the Inland Empire, which is another way of talking a whole bunch of nothing off the beaten track in Southern California. From this episode, I pulled the two hosts doling out some advice for those who want some to get into this podcast game. The 31 PodcastTyson Saner clipped us something from a show I hadn’t heard of before: The 31 Podcast. It’s basically a twist on the old “20 Questions” game, in which the host, Brandt Tobler, asks his guests 31 questions. Not sure why. But here he is with his guest Tom Segura, cohost of his own podcast, Your Mom’s House. BatfellaHere's the FULL debut episode of Adam Barker’s parody audio series, The Adventures of Batfella. Written and voiced by Adam along with some guests. Episode one, of many more to come, features the voice talents of British actress Rita Ramnani. If you're an Adam Barker fan (And, really, who isn't?), you should enjoy this show and not just because  the two podcasts that Adam normally does – the Oddcast Podcast UK and Its Not Soccer are taking a break until early spring while his girlfriend has a baby. There it is then. Epi79 is done. 2014 is off and running. And all is right with the world. I want to thank you, our listener, for doing us the honor of listening, I hope you continue to listen and, what’s more it would be delicious of you if you were to pass the Succotash… — Marc Hershon

The Circle Trilogy. When Deep Space Nine kicked off its second season, it did so with a Star Trek first: a three-part story. It was essentially a proof of concept for what DS9 would become. It added some much-needed depth to the series and explored the underlying issues facing Sisko as he carried out his mission of preparing Bajor for admission into the Federation. With a mix of religion, government infighting, corruption, and isolationism, the Circle Trilogy—comprised of “The Homecoming,” “The Circle,” and “The Siege”—is an early preview of the greatness to come for Deep Space Nine. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Tristan Riddell to discuss this three-parter and its place within the Star Trek universe. In news we cover new Star Trek artwork from Bye Bye Robot and Jeff Foster, a joint KRE-O stop-motion animation project between Hasbro and Bad Robot, an extra-special featurette on the TNG Season One Blu-ray, the sale of the original Shuttle Galileo, and your chance to buy—yes buy—Armin Shimmerman. Plus we examine Greg's iMessage stream of consciousness while watching Star Trek Generations.
