BUFFALO, NY- September 26, 2023 – A new research paper was published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 17, entitled, “Availability of living donor optimizes timing of liver transplant in high-risk waitlisted cirrhosis patients.” Liver transplant (LT) candidates have become older and frailer. Growing non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and comorbid disease burden in recent years is also predisposing them for poor waitlist outcomes. In this new study, researchers Fakhar Ali Qazi Arisar, Shiyi Chen, Catherine Chen, Noorulsaba Shaikh, Ravikiran Sindhuvalada Karnam, Wei Xu, Sumeet K. Asrani, Zita Galvin, Gideon Hirschfield, Keyur Patel, Cynthia Tsien, Nazia Selzner, Mark Cattral, Leslie Lilly, and Mamatha Bhat from the University Health Network, University of Toronto, Baylor University Medical Center, and Dow University of Health Sciences aimed to evaluate the impact of access to living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in waitlisted patients at highest risk of dropout. “We reviewed all adult patients with decompensated cirrhosis listed for LT from November 2012 to December 2018.” Patients with a potential living donor (pLD) available were identified. Survival analyses with Cox Proportional Hazards models and time to LT with Competing risk models were performed followed by prediction model development. Out of 860 patients who met inclusion criteria, 360 (41.8%) had a pLD identified and 496 (57.6%) underwent LT, out of which 170 (34.2%) were LDLT. The benefit of pLD was evident for all, but patients with moderate to severe frailty at listing (interaction p = 0.03), height

Gastrointestinal dysfunction occurs in up to 60% of intensive care patients and almost 20% suffer from three or more gastrointestinal symptoms. Persistent GDF in this setting results in the enteral feed delivery of less than half of the estimated caloric requirement in these patients putting them at risk of hospital-acquired acute malnutrition and adverse complications including organ failure. The role of the gut in the genesis of organ failure has been recognised for decades. Gut injury occurs in many intensive care patients, where splanchnic vasoconstriction is present to maintain perfusion of heart, lungs, kidney, liver and brain. The intestine is extremely sensitive to ischaemia, and this results in hyperinflammatory response secondary to gut hypoperfusion leading to mucosal atrophy, increase in intestinal permeability, bacterial overgrowth and translocation. This prioritisation of blood flow away from the gut has consequences. To watch the lecture, and learn more about the speaker, please visit https://www.continulus.com

Yuktha Asrana admits she wears her heart on her sleeve, and that's the reason she loves Romantic stories so much.A new novelist, the idea of writing a book came to Yuktha nearly two years ago. She soon realised that writing a novel comes with its own set of rules and regulations, and set about learning as much as she could. To do that, she turned to YouTube and Fictionary. There she learnt the basics of scene structure, character development and dialogue, citing Jenna Moreci (who is very funny!) in particular. One of the things I so admire about Yuktha is her willingness to learn. She knew she was a debut novelist and so would get a lot of things wrong, but that didn't stop her from pursuing her dream.Writing is a long-term profession and our writing gets better with experience and practice. Nervous so share her work at first (she admits she was petrified!) Yuktha Asrani chose a few select people to share her first draft with because she knew they would be brutally honest. But their comments, whilst honest, were also encouraging, and that was enough for Yuktha to keep revising and later publish. We talk a lot about research and why Yuktha believes it to be such an important part of her writing process. Yes, fiction is made up, but she wants her stories rooted in reality so that her readers can really engage with the characters and the worlds they live in.Towards the end of our conversation Yuktha Asrani talks to me about how she found her editor, and what she considers important when finding the right person.Yuktha was a joy to chat with and if you're nervous about writing, or even publishing, your first novel, she will inspire you to take a chance on yourself and your writing.Links:www.yukthaasrani.comYUKTHA ASRANI/ Romance Author (@yukthaasraniauthor) • Instagram photos and videosYuktha Asrani Author | FacebookFictionary | Book Writing and Editing SoftwareWriting with Jenna Moreci - YouTubeBook Editing Blueprint A Step-By-Step Plan To Making Your Novels Publishable Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! “Bawarchi” (The Chef) 1972 takes us to Shanti Niwas (abode of peace) where we meet the large Sharma family. Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film tells the story of the squabbling Sharma family headed by the eccentric Daduji played by Harindranath Chattopadhyay. Daduji’s personality leads to frequent turnover in the cook job. Moreover, the family difficulties also add to the problem of retaining staff. The situation is changed when Raghu played by Rajesh Khanna (the first superstar of India cinema) shows up and is hired as the cook. He meets the many challenges within the family and begins the process of bringing the family back together. The cast of Jaya Bhaduri as Krishna Sharma, Usha Kiran as Shobha Sharma, Ramnath Sharma played by A.K. Hangal, Asrani as Vishwanath Sharam and several others make this movie an engaging and enjoyable learning experience for us. We hope you will enjoy this film and its view of life within the Sharma family. Here’s the IMDB page for “Bawarchi”Up next it’s “The Lavender Hill Mod” starring Alex Guinness and Stanley Holloway. An iconic genre-blending masterpiece or an cliche filled tonally inconsistent potboiler? They feud, you decide! On this week's feud, Vikram and Vidur assume the avatars of Jai and Veeru respectively to feud one of the biggest Bollywood films of all time - Sholay. The difference is that instead of Jai’s trick coin, they use the impartial Film Feud coin. And instead of being BFF outlaws who take on a revenge mission in a small village where they both find love, they simply sit in a studio and feud. They realize they both have reverence for iconic dialogues and commend how the comedian Asrani has aged. Things heat up when Dharmendra is compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Asrani is compared to Charlie Chaplin. Vikram points out that the given name for the genre is curry western not spaghetti western. Vidur points out all the progressive and feminist choices in the movie. They discuss recreating the song Yeh Dosti as soon as they can get their hands on a motorcycle with a sidecar. Storytelling (on film) occurs in three stages: on paper (writing), on sets (direction) and in the editing room. Apurva Asrani has had the experience of wearing all three hats. He’s been an integral part of some of the finest Hindi films in the last 20 years. Spoke with Asrani about his experiences working with RGV, Kalpana Lajmi, Hansal Mehta and Nagesh Kukunoor; his role in persuading RGV to switch from Steenbeck to Avid; the personally cathartic experience of writing ALIGARH; Indian queer cinema; and struggles of gay men in India.Asrani was articulate and insightful with his responses, and bared his soul on several issues he holds close to his heart. I greatly appreciated that. I think you’ll too. Part 2 of my conversation with Apurva Asrani. Waiting was written by Atika Chohan, Anu Menon and James Ruzicka. Also, Shahid (2013) was co-written by Sameer Gautam Singh. My apologies to all four writers. Sorry about this.
