This episode covers the role of US and Chinese domestic politics in the US-China relationship. There are many drivers of US-China strategic competition, and domestic politics is among them, and has become increasingly important, though it has not been well researched and analyzed in recent years. One reason for the lack of analysis on Chinese politics is that since Xi Jinping became China's top leader in 2012, domestic politics in China has become even more of black box than previously. Bonnie is joined by Dr. Evan Medeiros, who has recently published a pathbreaking study that seeks to update the understanding of political forces in China and the United States that are influencing the bilateral relationship. Medeiros is one of the world's leading experts on Chinese foreign policy. He is the Penner Family Chair in Asia studies and the Cling Family Distinguished Fellow in US-China Studies in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. The report we will discuss today is titled: "The New Domestic Politics of US-China Relations" and was published by the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis where Evan is a senior fellow for foreign policy. During the Obama administration, Evan was on the NSC staff, first as director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, and then as special assistant to the president and Senior Director for Asia.  Timestamps[02:14] Influence of Domestic Politics in the US and China[03:32] Differences between US and Chinese Domestic Politics[05:19] Weakening of Historical Forces for Stability[08:35] Most Important Driver of Change to America's China Policy[13:34] Xi Jinping Shaping Domestic Politics in China[19:38] Reversing the Downward Trend in US-China Relations[21:44] Close Connections between Domestic and Foreign Politics[24:49] Biden and Xi as Leaders in the Bilateral Relationship

An interview with the only living signatory of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. What an honour and privilege to speak with The Honourable A. Brian Peckford P.C., on the current state of Canada. It's a long one, but worth every minute. Brian was born August 27, 1942 in Whitbourne, Newfoundland. He graduated from Lewisporte High School in 1960. In 1966 he graduated with a BA in Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland. He later did post graduate work in English Literature and Education Psychology. He taught high school in Sprindgale, Newfoundland, and in 1972 he entered Provincial Politics. In March 1972 Brian was elected the first Progressive Conservative MHA in the history of the riding at age 29. Later that year he became Special and Parliamentary Assistant to the then Premier, Frank Moores. In 1974 he was appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing and in 1976 Minister of Mines and Energy. While Minister of Mines and Energy, he also served for some time as Minister of Rural Development and Northern Affairs. In March 1979 Brian won the Progressive Conservative leadership convention and became the third Premier of the Province since Confederation. He was at 36 the youngest first minister of Newfoundland since the First Prime Minister, Philip Little in 1855. Brian became a strong advocate of Provincial Rights as manifested in his efforts to gain some control and revenues from the newly developing offshore oil and gas resources culminating in The Atlantic Accord. This groundbreaking Agreement brought revenues to the Province as if the resources were on land, around $30 Billion to date, and a say in the management of the resource. Brian was involved in the Constitutional Patriation Process of the early 1980's leading to the Constitution Act of 1982. It was Newfoundland's proposal presented at the Conference that led to the breakthrough. Brian is the only living First Minister of that Constitutional Process. Mr. Peckford retired from politics in March 1989 and began a consulting company, with his wife Carol, assisting companies in Europe and North America. He has written two books, the last, ‘Some Day The Sun Will Shine And Have Not Will Be No More,' a Globe and Mail best seller in 2012. He has received awards as an Outstanding Young Canadian and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association. He was sworn to the Privy Council by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1982. Brian has conducted inquires on behalf of the British Columbia Government and the Government of Canada. Stay in touch with Brian at https://peckford42.wordpress.com/ He retired in 2001 and presently lives with his wife, Carol, in Parksville, British Columbia.

The federal election campaign has consumed all of the political oxygen since the Governor General officially dissolved parliament on September 11. The Liberal strategy out of the gate was to equate Conservative Leader to Doug Ford - characterized as the service-slashing Premier of Ontario who cares little about the little guy. A vote for Scheer is a vote that threatens everything from healthcare to affordable housing. How has that strategy played out? How could it be related to the midweek bombshell from Time Magazine - publishing photos of Justin Trudeau in blackface? Meanwhile, life goes on for parents and kids across the province. Education workers represented by CUPE have given the union a strong strike mandate and we're getting a better sense of the class sizes.

In the course of a week, Alberta's political landscape changed dramatically. First, Premier Ed Stelmach announced he would not run in the next provincial election. Then David Swann, leader of the Alberta Liberal Party and leader of the Official Opposition, also announced his resignation. On the one side: a new party with a dynamic young leader is scoring high in the public opinion polls. On the other side: the two major parties in the legislature both face leadership races. And there may or may not be a new center option in the form of the Alberta Party. More than it has for decades, the political landscape appears open for major change -- but what kind of change will it be? The speaker will argue that the door is now open for a new kind of politics to emerge, a politics that reflects the demands and the priorities and the style of a new generation. In 1971, Peter Lougheed's surprise win marked the political arrival of the "Baby Boomer" generation -- but the first baby boomers turned 65 in January. The last generational shift obliterated the long-lived Social Credit party; what will the next one look like? After the upcoming leadership races and the provincial election that will probably follow in 2012, there will be new faces wall to wall -- and the odds are they will be younger faces. The critical question, the one that will drive our politics for the next decades, is how the parties -- the old ones, and the new ones just emerged or trying to emerge -- will cope with this new reality. Speaker: Peter McCormick Dr. Peter McCormick is Professor and Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Lethbridge, where he teaches Canadian Government and Politics and Constitutional Law. He holds degrees from the University of Alberta (BA 68), the University of Toronto (MA 69) and the London School of Economics (PhD 74). Premier Ed Stelmach's recent resignation and rumblings regarding property owners rights, the environment, deficits and the upcoming budged seems to have shaken their long standing, right of center, foundation. The Alberta Party, which has existed in one form or another since 1985, aims to represent the center of the political spectrum. They have recently consulted with a wide range of Albertans before the development of their policy platform. The party advocates that Alberta, a potential world economic leader, should take advantage of a diversified long term economic plan favoring more stability and less, as is now the case, “boom and bust” cycles. The speaker will explain how the Alberta Party plans to renew Albertans faith in the political process, while strengthening the educational and health care systems and proving that a healthy environment not only can coexist with, but is necessary for, a healthy economy. Speaker: Sue Huff Sue Huff is a 30-year resident of Alberta and interim leader of the Alberta Party. Her great-grandparents settled in Alberta in 1906. Sue was born in Bermuda and spent her first 14 years traveling around Canada because her father was in the Canadian military.
