Recorded on 16 January 2025 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr John Patrick Ethics courses only routinely appeared in the medical curriculum in the 80s An anecdote: “I only teach ethics I don't practice them.” Aristotle begins his ethics; “Every rational activity aims at some end or good.” Paul points out that “ The good that I would I do not…” The University presumes (with patent absurdity) that all our problems are due to ignorance! The Hippocratic Physicians knew that many practitioners were charlatans. Hence the four necessities: Where do morals come from? Polanyi. Lewis, Leff and for us Deuteronomy. The unintended disaster of reductionism leading to scientism. The change in the meaning of the word Fact introduced by reductionism and politicized by Bacon. Cheryl Ann Gajadhar is a woman of faith, resilience, and passion. She was born in Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in a humble family surrounded by a rich spiritual legacy. As a child, she attended St. Augustine High School and later went on to study at St. Augustine College in Chicago. Despite her upbringing in a religious environment, Cheryl Ann's childhood was marred by traumatic experiences of sexual abuse. At the age of five, she was abused by people she trusted, and later faced further abuse during her time in an orphanage in east Trinidad. These experiences would shape her life forever, fueling her determination to be an advocate for children and survivors of abuse. However, it was through her faith in God that Cheryl Ann found the resilience to overcome her adversities and turn them into a powerful testimony. She became a born-again Christian and was filled with the Holy Spirit, dedicating her life to Christ and his mission. Cheryl Ann felt called to use her experiences and faith to be a witness and voice for God and children and became an ordained minister and prophetess. Her ministry has taken her internationally, including Suriname, where she was able to share her message of hope and restoration to people of all ages and backgrounds. She has also been a dedicated Sunday School teacher, lovingly guiding children in their own spiritual journeys. Cheryl Ann is not just a minister, but also an accomplished author and motivational speaker. She has written over fifteen books, including "The Girl In The Cupboard", a powerful memoir of her experiences of abuse and healing. She has also authored a safety manual for kids and other titles focused on self-improvement and spiritual growth. Although she has only been able to publish five of her books, her writing has already touched the hearts of many and offers a beacon of hope for those struggling with similar challenges. She has been interviewed by Trinidad newspapers, sharing her insights and experiences with a wider audience. Cheryl Ann continues to work as a motivational speaker, visiting schools and churches to inspire and empower people of all ages. While her journey has not been without challenges, she shows no sign of slowing down her passion for the care and safety of young children, as in shown in her fourth book, “Safety Tips-[What young children need to know about their personal safety] and her mission to spread God's love and instill hope in others. https://www.thegirlinthecupboard.com

Young people need to be grounded in understanding the principles that our society is based upon. “From the Greeks in the West, from the early stages, in our literature courses all the way up to the modern period, whether it is in philosophy, science, or the history of art or music – we cover all these pieces from a Christian perspective. The goal is not to say that this tradition doesn't have its problems or its concerns but it is to say these are the best things we have produced as a society and they are fundamentally Christian, or have a Christian ethos in them…. We are thinking through what has framed and shaped society,” and how can students use that as they launch themselves into their careers. Thank you all for tuning in today. Dr. John Patrick, who will be discussing where we've come from, where we're going, and what we need to do to get back to being a force. The topic for today is the continuation of what we've been discussing and it's the duty to understand as much as we can about the person we say we worship. Jeremy Begbie, an English polymath and superb musician, came to mind as I was thinking about this topic. He once gave a three-day seminar at Augustine College (https://www.augustinecollege.org) where he spoke about the connection between theology, art, and philosophy. He compared the Bible to a great piece of music, with a beginning and an end, and said that it's a story of home away and home again. We're all like survivors of a colossal wreck that went down before the beginning of written time. Our little stories of realizing that we are lost and finding our way home again is a recurrent theme in human living and the Bible starts with this theme in the Garden of Eden. Ana Gil Garcia is the Executive Director of Academic Effectiveness at St. Augustine College. Originally from Isla de Margarita, part of Venezuela, she was born and raised on this Caribbean Island about 25 miles north of the mainland. Though both parents were supportive of their children's endeavors, it was Ana Gil's mother that would require all her children to attend college. Wanting to teach biology, Ana Gil had a strong desire to be in the classroom. After studying in the main city of Caracas, Venezuela, she'd be the recipient of a scholarship that would send her to the United States. Now a five-time Fulbright US Scholar, and a published author, her lobbying for Latino leadership parity, equity in education and digital access for Latinos in education crystallized on the launch of a principal endorsement program for Latino teachers to close the existing gap in Chicago Public Schools. She co-founded the Illinois Latino Coalition of Education Leaders (ILCEL) to maximize efforts in Latino educational issues and the Illinois Venezuelan Alliance to denounce the existing Venezuelan humanitarian crisis. She is one of the Rotary International faces of the “Humanity in Action” campaign to fight poverty. Her defense of democracy and social justice are recognized by diverse human rights groups. Tune in to hear more about how Ana Gil is active in supporting the Latino community and bringing education to areas that need it most.

Dr. John Robson (historian, columnist, documentary filmmaker, Executive Director of Climate Discussion Nexus, and professor at Augustine College) gives a vivid account of the people and principles that produced the Magna Carta, and explains how that heritage is still relevant and worth recognising. Our freedoms were not created in 1982 with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. They are rooted in a long tradition that grew out of a religious respect for human dignity. Dr. Robson traces this fascinating history, from King Alfred famously burning the cakes to Canadian Joseph Howe proclaiming the “sacred fire of liberty” before a jury in 1835. Dr. Robson also takes us back to fundamentals, reminding us that disagreements often reflect deeper assumptions about human nature, morality, and truth. Preaching for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Dr. Nontando Hadebe offers a reflection on the history-making relationship between Mary and Elizabeth and its power for women today: "There was another power operating in the most unlikely place - that is in the lives of these two women from an oppressed nation who had no significance, status or power. The two women had no male presence or authority to mediate their experiences for them; they were left on their own to make sense of the extraordinary events that were happening in their lives. Left to themselves, they discovered their power borne out of their relationship with God and with each other to face with courage, resilience and faith the uncertain future that lay ahead of them." This episode is focused on grief. That is, loving and losing those whom we love, feeling acutely the absence of our beloved and the abiding ache to be reunited in fullness. We wonder: how is it that God--who we're told is love and the author of all beauty--would allow for such cause for mourning and sorrow?Today's episode looks at all this in reference to the life of St. Augustine and his mourning the death of three particular individuals in his life: a friend, his mother Monica, and his son, Adeodatus. The episode begins with my guest's own profound experience of loss and grief, and how the writings of Augustine shed some light on these oftentimes opaque mysteries. As is customary on every 10th episode, Jason Hartman, your host, takes on a non-financial topic as he talks with Dr. Geoffrey Simmons, a physician who is Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Disaster Medicine. He has a B.S. in Zoology and has completed the course work for a Masters degree in Microbiology. As a Fellow with the Discovery Institute Center for Science and Culture, he has studied the theory of evolution for over forty years. For thirty of those years he was an ardent supporter of Darwinian ideas. Now, however, the data supporting this theory scientifically untenable. As of this date, his seventh book, What Darwin Didn't Know, is in its sixth printing and his eighth book, Billions of Missing Links, is in its second printing. Both books show how the incredible complexity of the human body and all other living beings cannot have come about through evolution. Some reviews: “A well-researched and open-minded analyses.” — Stephen Meyer, PhD, Dir. of the Center for Science and Culture, Discovery Institute “You've posed all those “break-down complexities” that Darwin worried about, and you've done it with flair!” — Jody Sjogren, Illustrator for Icons of Evolution A wonderful book…clear and accessible to the nonspecialist — John Patrick, M.D., Prof. of the History of Science, Medicine and Faith, Augustine College, Ottawa, Canada. Geoffrey Simmons is a rarity (referring to the types of books written). His book holds evolution, as he sees it, to the standard of scientific observation and finds evolution lacking — Dan Hays, Salem Statesman Journal, May 20, 2007Dr. Geoffrey Simmons focuses on the millions of structures and systems on the Earth that came about all at once, entire…with no preceding links, no subsequent links, no “sideways” links. To illustrate, he surveys examples like… the hummingbird and its circulatory systeminsects and insect–eating plantsthe role of the thousands of species of viruseschemical signals and the sensory apparatus that detects themthe self–regulating capacity of the Earth's ocean/air/soil systemIt's clear: Nature containsonly leaps, not links. Only the intelligence and purpose of an all–powerful Designer can explain the intricate creatures, connections, and “coincidences” everywhere. We'll be back to our usual investing, business and financial topics in the next episode #211. Be sure to join Jason and his team for the upcoming Phoenix Foreclosure Tour http://jasonhartman.com/store/events/ where we'll explore distressed property / REO opportunities and enjoy first-class accommodations at The Ritz Carlton Hotel in The Biltmore area of Phoenix / Scottsdale, Arizona.
