On today's Tax Tuesday, host Troy Butler, Senior Manager of Bookkeeping at Anderson, speaks with Jeff Webb, CPA, Vice-President of Professional Services at Anderson about some timely tax questions around deductions and payroll. The discussion also addresses some detailed information around bookkeeping including services offered by Anderson, and other apps and software that are best for certain situations. Submit your tax questions to taxtuesday@andersonadvisors. Highlights/Topics: "How do you write-off classes or courses, cars, equipment, or anything in general? What is the process? What do you keep? How do you show your proof of funds spent?" In a C-corp, you're allowed to take education for new lines of business. Other entity types, you're only allowed to deduct education for business tha you're already doing. "What's the best way to get payroll started? I want to start with hiring a couple of part time employees." - I highly recommend using a third-party for payroll. I don't recommend that you do it yourself, unless you have a full-time dedicated bookkeeper that this is their job. "Can I deduct expenses for working from home, and what forms can I use?" - What we recommend, typically, is that if you have an entity such as a corporation or even a partnership, you do administrative home reimbursement. "What's the best way to record startup expenses incurred on your private accounts?" There's a lot to read there, so we'll go on to the next one. - Startup costs, organizational costs are actually intangible assets, and those intangible assets get amortized. "Which bookkeeping app would you recommend for four units or less landlords to make our tax preparation easier for all of us?" - QuickBooks is always good. I like QuickBooks Online. "Can we discuss how our bookkeeping service works?" I can do that pretty well. "We're drowning in Excel and Quicken." - We have several different services we offer here at Anderson. The flagship one is called full service bookkeeping, and that's where we're going to do your books on a monthly basis. "What are common expense categories I should use?" - There are lots and lots of templates of charts of accounts out there that can give you a good baseline. For our Platinum members, we offer some generalized templates. "Can I discuss some big picture strategies to help with bookkeeping automation/AI?" “We have a physician set up their PLLC in New York State. Do I need to set up payroll, give myself W2? How much do they pay themselves to avoid an IRS audit? What's the bookkeeping needed? How do I take the remaining money out as a distribution?" That's seven questions in one. They're getting their money's worth out of that one. “What are the minimum requirements to do so and suggested curiosity of tasking?" – If you have a ton of activity, and a week's worth of transactions takes you four hours to do, then you probably shouldn't wait a whole lot of time to do your bookkeeping. At the minimum, I would recommend doing your books quarterly. "If our business is still paying off business debt from previous tax years, how do we account for that as far as bookkeeping and reporting?” - If you take out a loan, and you're making payments against that loan, those loan payments aren't expenses, except for the interest on that loan. “How does the bookkeeping service integrate with the accounting service?" – If you're using us for bookkeeping and using us for tax, we will coordinate your tax return with your tax preparer. Your bookkeeping team will work with your client tax coordinators/tax preparer Resources: Infinity Investing https://infinityinvesting.com/ Email us at Tax Tuesday taxtuesday@andersonadvisors.com Tax and Asset Protection Events https://andersonadvisors.com/real-estate-asset-protection-workshop-training/?utm_source=aba&utm_medium=podcast&utm_content=how-to-write-off-general-business-expenses Anderson Advisors https://andersonadvisors.com/

Have you ever had a client call you up one day to tell you that you did such a great job and now they are firing you? Client retention can be a real problem in the coaching industry, and my friend HB Pasley joined me on Podcasting Your Global Career to deep dive into the strategies and techniques of "The Chiropractor of Wisdom" 3 Key Takeaways Client retention doesn't take an abundance of time. Simple communication habits will go a long way. It's 9X easier to retain a client than it is to acquire a new client. Clients will refer you if you simply give them a next level experience HB's Bio H.B. has been a coach, a creative, and a professional communicator for close to four decades. He founded and presided over an arts-based Christian nonprofit that served the marginalized for over two decades. He has published many books and countless leadership guides, facilitated thousands of people in leadership development retreats, and has produced over 7 million song streams on Spotify. Even after all that, he is fond of deflecting attention from his accomplishments by saying, “my real claim to fame is that I have failed at more ventures than most will ever attempt ... and I took a lot of notes.” H.B. has founded works in tech, financial services, charitable orgs, and in the arts. His DNA is to start things, however, it may be his lifelong work with very strong, very talented people that has uniquely equipped him to be a professional advisor. It was “in the school of hard knocks,” he says, where he gleaned his best wisdom for helping others. Refreshingly, H.B. openly speaks of his own failures as some of his greatest learning moments. As a business coach he often refers to himself as a “perspective partner.” His academic scholarships helped him earn a Bachelors Degree in Religion and General Business at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama, in 1988, Cum Laude. As a financial advisor he earned his Series 6, 7, and 63 designations. H.B. is also a Certified Exit Planning Advisor. He claims, however, that he has never been rewarded for book smarts, only for working well with people. Presently, H.B. lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with his wife Robin, an award-winning interior designer. His two sons live in Phoenix, Arizona. Xander is a student at Grand Canyon University, and Zane recently graduated with a degree in Entrepreneurial Business. H.B. loves golf though he is bad at it. He is better at fly fishing, reading books, and hiking. He loves to be on the water. This week we welcome Leona Williams and Erich Eastman! Leona Williams was destined to become a Country Music Entertainer. She landed her first radio show at the age of 15, simply called "Leona Sings" in Jefferson City, Missouri. That journey would take her all over the world and allow her to sing before thousands and thousands of Country Music fans. Leona moved to Nashville in the late 1960s from a small town in Missouri called Vienna, and was soon recording for Hickory Records with such hits as "Once More" and "Yes Ma'am, He Found Me In A Honky Tonk". Since then, Leona has traveled worldwide and opened shows for some of country music's top entertainers and made numerous personal appearances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Leona later teamed up with Merle Haggard for a top ten duet called "The Bull and the Beaver" and a duet album followed called HEART TO HEART. During this time, she would write some of Merle's biggest hits including "You Take Me For Granted" and "Someday When Things Are Good." Leona, a Missouri native, was inducted into the Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Fame in 1999. She was also honored with the prestigious George D. Hay Award in 2002 and was also inducted into the Missouri Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2011, Leona was awarded "Entertainer of the Year" by R.O.P.E. (Reunion of Professional Entertainers). Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
Our recent ILS Asia 2021 conference featured a panel discussion where experts explored the emerging insurance-linked securities (ILS) platform in Hong Kong and asked what considerations there may be for sponsors of or investors in catastrophe bonds and other ILS. Thanks to the efforts of Singapore and more recently Hong Kong, there's an exciting and growing opportunity for the insurance-linked securities (ILS) sector to play a meaningful role in the Asia region, according to these industry experts. Aided by its ILS grant scheme, Singapore has witnessed a surge in cat bond issuance over the past 12 months or so. Investor interest in ILS is high and as the Asia region looks to capture some of the demand, Hong Kong is also positioning itself to become a hub for ILS business. With interest in the asset class heightened, our panellists shared their thoughts on what this might mean for the ILS market in Asia, and also for issuances in Hong Kong. The panel featured: Stefan Kräuchi, Founder, ILS Advisers an ILS fund manager and investment adviser based in Asia; Andy Souter, Co-Head of P&C at Hong Kong based reinsurer, Peak Re; Simon Lam, Executive Director, General Business, Hong Kong Insurance Authority; and Ricky Spitzer, Partner at global law firm Mayer Brown.
Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
This episode of our podcast features an interview with Simon Lam, Executive Director, General Business at the Hong Kong Insurance Authority, who joined our latest event, ILS Asia 2021 to discuss Hong Kong's plans for its new insurance-linked securities platform. Hong Kong already has an established insurance and reinsurance market, while its legislative preparations for ILS were completed at the beginning of 2021. Since then the Insurance Authority has been building out its licensing and supervision infrastructure, with the support of an ILS working group, including notable ILS market players, Mr. Lam explained to the ILS Asia 2021 audience. “As we all know, being efficient in licensing is very, very important for ILS issuers,” he explained. Saying that “We also started an ILS capacity building exercise for staff of the Insurance Authority, through the engagement of a professional ILS consultant.” “The final piece was when the pilot ILS grant scheme was launched by the Hong Kong government in May,” Lam continued, saying that, “If you ask me where are we now, I would say that we are 99% ready for the first issuance.” At the same time Hong Kong has been engaging with potential sponsors of insurance-linked securities (ILS) arrangements, to generate initial deal-flow interest. Mr. Lam told our conference audience that, “In parallel, we are soliciting support from potential sponsors and I'm pleased to advise that we are already working on the first cat bond and hopefully, if all things go well, we will have the first ILS issue out of Hong Kong within this year.” The panel session mentioned at the end will be included in a later podcast episode.

Cicely TysonBefore we begin tonight's show with my guest Dr. Stepheny Finnie, I wanted to acknowledge the passing of the fantastic and always gracious Cicely Tyson.Cicely Tyson was an actress and fashion model. In a career spanning more than seven decades, she became known for her portrayal of strong African-American women. Throughout her career, Tyson refused to play drug addicts, prostitutes, or maids, roles she thought demeaning to Black women. Call me at 844-9INTERN. *************************************************************************************** "To get into the front door of any Fortune 500 company, you have to approach them with an idea. We are not selling sites; we are selling ideas." - Darren O'Donnell. Darren O'Donnell has an MBA in International Business from the Golden Gate University and a BS in General Business and Entrepreneurship from the Colorado State University. He has vast experience in producing revenue and creating business relationships in the sports industry. His main focus in the Denver Broncos is to discover and generate new business opportunities. With over 18 years of experience in the industry, Darren worked with sponsorship and ticket sales, consulting, and agency representation. Darren believes that perhaps the foundational attribute to get into the sports industry is persistence. As he said, the industry doesn't have unlimited opportunities, and applicants most certainly will face several negatives before getting a chance. There is when a second attribute gets into the scene, flexibility. Rarely, the first step into the industry will be in our preferred position. Flexibility is key to adapt, evolve, and grow in the industry from inside of it. Darren highlighted the importance of having new ideas when requesting a job opportunity. In the sponsorship sales world, it is vital to bring fresh perspectives and new ways to approach it. Listen to the full episode, and learn about the importance of volunteering and what Darren means when he says that the ideal candidate for sponsorship sales should have figured out how to "smell the money." Also, he answers how a student can add value to sports professionals and how he thinks the industry will look like in the forthcoming years. Connect with Darren O'Donnell at: Linkedin

Good morning, RVA! It’s 72 °F, and the tropical storm is upon us. At this moment we’re still under a tropical storm warning until 1:30 PM and we had a flash flood warning earlier this morning. It has rained a lot and will continue to rain a lot for the next couple of hours. Keep an eye out for strong winds as this storm moves through our region. If you’ve got plans, meetings, or errands to run today, it’s probably a good idea to make sure they’ve not been cancelled or postponed. Stay vigilant and stay safe!Water coolerRichmond Police are reporting that Jerome Montague, 30, was shot to death early Sunday morning. Police responded to the 2000 block of Dawson Road and found Montague fatally shot.As of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 1,324↘️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 0↗️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 207↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 77, Henrico: 84, and Richmond: 46)—just the second time that number’s been over 200. Since this pandemic began, 296 people have died in the Richmond region. Remember: The new emoji methodology compares the average of the last seven days to the average of the seven days before that—that’s how we get zero reported new deaths paired with an up arrow. The emojis are nice, but, in my opinion, nothing beats looking at the statewide stacked graph of new cases, new deaths, and new hospitalizations. Also worth looking at today is this graph of new cases (and new deaths) across the Richmond region. Henrico is reporting an average of 63 new cases per day, which is an all-time high. However, the seven-day average of percent positivity in the County, according to the VDH website, sits at 6.2%. This probably means Henrico has been out there testing, testing, testing. For comparison, Richmond and Chesterfield have seven-day average percent positivities of 6.5% and 7.9% respectively.Last night, City Council unanimously adopted ORD. 2020–154 and has now officially complied with the state’s mostly-dumb process for removing Confederate monuments. While everyone eventually voted for the paper, 8th District Councilmember Trammell said something along the lines of “I’m going to vote yes, but I don’t think we should.” Which, OK. That’s an easy way to let folks who are paying attention know how you really feel but avoids putting you on the record as “super pro Confederate monument.” Now the City will spend the next 30-or-so days looking for folks to come get these huge statues. At last night’s meeting—which I dipped in and out of so may have missed a few comments—it sounded like the Italian-American Cultural Association of Virginia wants the Columbus statue and J.E.B. Stuart’s family and the J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace Preservation Trust in Patrick County want his statue. Who will come to claim the Maury statue, I wonder? Here’s the reopening PDF from last night’s School Board meeting! I’ve only given it a quick once-over, but it’s divided into five sections: the Academic Office Plan, Talent Office Plan, Schools Office Plan, Engagement Office Plan, and Operations Office Plan. There’s a lot in here, and there are a lot of services the district plans on providing to students and teachers as everyone figures out virtual learning together. Specifically, check out the Engagement Office section (p. 37) for how the District plans on getting the word out about the changes to this coming school year. This, from the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s C. Suarez Rojas and Kenya Hunter, seems like a disaster: “Hanover County Public Schools says it is temporarily returning signage with the current names of Lee-Davis High School and Stonewall Jackson Middle School as the school system works through the process for renaming them.” I mean, sure, I guess. The schools will be renamed, and I think they’d have survived without signage for a couple of months.ZONING NEWS. Jonathan Spiers at Richmond BizSense says the Richmond Planning Commission “adopted a pair of resolutions declaring the city’s intent to amend its B-3 General Business zoning district.” B-3 is a car-oriented, sprawly zoning district that is almost entirely (82%!) found in the City’s 8th and 9th Districts—tap the link and take a look at the map. Page two of the staff report (PDF) gives you an idea of what they’re trying to tweak about B-3, and it’s good stuff all around: removing “adult” uses, getting rid of parking lots as a principal use, moving parking lots to the back or side of properties, and adding breweries and dwelling units to the list of principal uses. Basically making B-3 more livable, more like a neighborhood and less like a never-ending stretch of strip mall parking lots. A tiny percentage of the City’s B-3—1/100th of one percent, says a city planner—is, unfortunately, along the very edge of Oregon Hill and a few folks from the neighborhood oppose the change. To accommodate, Planning Commission will look to rezone those properties in addition to making the tweaks to B-3, which, who knows, may just generate even more opposition. We’ll have to wait and see.Note! Today’s free COVID-19 testing event at Fairfield Middle School has been cancelled due to the tropical storm. The Health District will hold their next community testing event on Friday, August 7th at the Hotchkiss Field Community Center (701 E. Brookland Park Boulevard) from 9:00–11:00 AM. If you think you’ve got the virus, need to get tested, or just have questions, give the local COVID-19 hotline a ring: 804.205.3501.This morning’s longreadAsk Yourself, Who Gets Left Behind in Cycling? Here’s a short piece by Keith Benjamin, the Director of the Department of Traffic and Transportation in Charleston, South Carolina. We don’t have a Department of Transportation in Richmond, so we don’t have anyone at the director level thinking about and advocating for those who are most impacted by traffic violence in our community. In Charleston, the top city in South Carolina for bike and pedestrian deaths and injuries, Black citizens make up 22 percent of our population but represent over 40 percent of bike and pedestrian deaths and injuries. Our hospitality industry is the backbone of our downtown, but only 20 percent of these workers live downtown, so many are relegated to disconnected alternative modes of transportation just to get to work on time. For our fixed transit routes, 65 percent of our riders are Black, over 70 percent have a household income of $45,000 or less, and over 89 percent walk or bike to the transit stop.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

In this extremely informative episode, Shawn and Joni share their hard-earned advice to the young entrepreneurs just getting started in today’s competitive business landscape.
In this interview with Glen, first we cover his new revolutionary ‘Periodic Table of Elements’ - that he has introduced to the world - that will have all physicists and chemists - globally exclaiming - “why did I not think of that!” Glen furthers this ‘new paradigm’ that is upon us - by saying that as astrology is a fact of physics he welcomes any physicist to challenge this statement - but so far no one has stepped forward. The global elite who control the world wide media use this media to put down astrology at every turn, Yet, behind our backs the establishment will always draw up a chart when their babies are born. Whilst these same ruling class will always check their chart or their countries chart before going to war or making a large incursion into a market, or change of government etc. Thus they have contained and closed down the whole subject, that even academia and intellectuals shy away from it, for fear of compromising their occupation within the upper echelons of education and universities. (except in India). As Nikola Tesla once stated. “The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.” Glen welcomes input from physicists to look into this ancient of sciences to reinvigorate the debate on its efficacy. In following up on this statement that astrology is a fact of physics - we have been told (programmed) that astrology is basically a witchcraft belief - and that ‘you have to believe in it’ - and he says that is not true at all. Saying that astrology is based on real things. Like the stars - that they are real things that are emitting real electro magnetic forces and we ‘live in the middle of this field’ of star force … and the old, but true saying that there are as many stars in the sky as there are grains of sand on the earth - and he says if we imagine that - then we have all these ‘beams of force’ that have been constant for billions of years that they create this sort of holographic energetic field and with that we have got the solar system moving - and we have this again like an atom - we’ve got the sun in the middle and we’ve got these sort of energetic magnetic spheres that in the atom will have the electrons all organised - whereas in the solar system we have planets that are ’sitting there’ spinning and condensing matter that has come from the sun but as they move around inside that magnetic shell - they change the form of that shell and so the star light that’s coming through those planetary shells are hitting different ’tones’ - so it’s like the difference between C sharp and C minus - let’s say Mercury moves around its shell - it warps that shell and so the tone coming from that ’star force’ is altered as it comes through there - and that’s what we receive - we receive that electromagnetic variance on the earth - here. So as the planets move they alter their magnetism within our solar system - and matter follows magnetism - so as the magnetism changes - so does the matter change. So there’s a direct relationship between the movement of the planets and the effect on Earth. Now within the ‘Biodynamic’ agricultural movement there are a few people who have done this work - but there is a particular book - called moon and planet - by Agnes Fyfe (http://garudabd.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/garudabd.org/files/BDAGEarthAstrolgy3.pdf ) - and this group have been involved in a method called chromatography - where they get the sap of a plant and they ‘rise it up through blotting paper and then they rise up silver nitrate and then they expose that to the light and it develops a picture - and it shows us the qualities of the sap of the plant at the time it was picked. So she did these trials over many years and every so many hours. That what she found was the direct relationship between the movement of the planets and the change in the plant sap. So she showed this direct correlation that plants are completely affected by the movements of the planets. Glen stresses that Astrology has been doing this for 5,000 years and astrologers have been watching this direct relationship. Glen has been doing this for 40 years - that there is a tremendous body of knowledge of what is the influence of the various planets when they are in certain positions and in certain relationships with another planet. So he says there is a very ‘worked up science’ of these effects and, He emphasises - there is no belief here - this is a direct relationship between the state of the field of the solar system and what is happening on earth - there is no belief here. In this interview: Tim mentions - that the global elite use astrology whilst publicly putting it down - and Glen concurs Stating that astrology is a fact of physics and is scientifically true and we have a society that wants to base itself on scientific fact yet deny the very basic fact of magnetism and matter. So this is an immense hypocrisy that science is perpetrating on ‘we the people.’ Where he says they will use it - they know it works - it’s a fact of physics and then they come along and try to fool people that it’s all fantasy. He calls it a huge fraud that the scientific community are perpetrating. Yet, Nancy Reagan wife of US President Ronald Reagan, used the services of Joan Quigley to assist her with helping her husband at many levels during his Presidency. In an interview, Quigley mentioned that over the next seven years, she issued guidance, for pay, that went far beyond mundane scheduling to matters of diplomacy, Cold War politics and even the timing of the president’s cancer surgery. Glen says astrologers are endeavouring to bring consciousness into a very unconscious realm. He says the greatest next step in human development will be when everybody starts to use astrology and that now with Astrology.com and Astro.com - all the information now is freely available to anyone with a computer. Stating that it is a very simple language based upon the 9 planets and the sun - (the moon being classified as a planet) there are only 10 planets in the whole game. So all the information now is essentially at our fingertips. Please listen - there is so much information in this interview … far too much for me to type up … Glen talks about Venus and Mars and the times that they are in-synch and then the other times when they are in opposite situations - we get an understanding of how this all comes about - by looking at the position in the sky of these planets. He talks about depressed people and what influences and planets can cause depression - that you may have three instances of planetary events influencing you over a very short period - but you can map out when this ‘transit’ passes - this, is a great relief. Meaning you are not going to be in a depressed situation for life. As all things must pass. Glen talks about transits - and he also broaches previous lives or reincarnation as he expands on the vastness of this cosmology. That it is not just luck - that your birth chart is not just a bad lottery draw - it is actually a result of all of our past lives - be it a million or only a few … stating that our spirit is this eternal being - that moves from one life to the next and every experience we have - it’s like we put a T-shirt on - like been there and done that! So we wind all of this experience into and around our eternal spirit - and that becomes our sort of personality - and our psychology - and all of our neuroses - and all that is wound up in what we call the astral body - and he says this is what astrology is. It is the theology of the astral body - and this is related to the planets. The stars are the spirit realm and the planets are what we call the astral realm - and all of our experiences from the past are accumulated and that is what’s imaged in the birth chart. Now from birth we have the ability to alter that field of activity and it is through our will, if we have a habit that we don’t like - our will says I am going to change this - I am going to physically force my physical body to do something else - and in forcing the physical body the energetic body has to shift - the mater sort of alters the magnetism as it were. Rather than the other way round. And so by doing that 10,000 times we form a new habit - so we have forced our astral body into a change - so that is the point of life. So this IS the place that we have the opportunity to reorganise this energetic psychology that we have - and so the birth chart is just the starting place. Listen - Glen talks about progression - he also says fortunately for us the planets in the sky are predictable - listen ... You choose your parents and country of birth too. Quickly covered were subjects that you can research for yourself. The rewriting of the Bible by Constantine at the Council of Nicea and the elimination of reincarnation out of the Bible. https://probe.org/was-reincarnation-ever-in-the-bible/ He talks that we have reduced our understanding of who we are in the Western culture to that of body and a soul and God - and now science has relegated our soul to the mind and the mind now is seen in many ways as delusional and we take drugs to close down or get rid of the mind and now we are basically just a body … Some would say an empty body ... There was a huge amount of information given. This is some of it, below. Partnerships very often have an earth sign with a water sign or an air sign with a fire sign. If we checked out Marriage Registers we would find that the statistics will prove that this can be statically supported to a certain degree. That when Mercury, the planet of communication is, retrograde - communications seem more garbled but as soon as Mercury goes direct - more flow and coherency happens That an early version of the St James Bible has it had written ‘three astrologers came for the East” but subsequent printings have been watered down /censored. To the extent that it has changed to ‘the three Magi’ and then changed to now it’s the ‘three wisemen.’ But, the Bible has been continuously censored … will the three wise men end up becoming: ‘the three coca cola salesmen?’ The time of birth and the location are very important to obtain for a concise reading. Questions that I never got around to asking were: That Chartres Cathedral in France has the 12 signs of the zodiac as stained glass windows. How does each planet have its characteristics embedded into their planet’s respective influences? Venus = love beauty feminine - yet Mars = war energy and is masculine. I encourage you to listen - and then use the two astrology websites to get a basic understanding of what your birth sign is. Then find yourself a good experienced astrologer. For more tech tips, news, and updates visit - CraigPeterson.com --- Read More: What Government Contractors Need to Know About NIST, DFARS Password Reqs --- Automated Machine-Generated Transcript: Hey, does your business make something that might be used all ultimately by a government contractor? Did you know that all of the requirements that they have rolled downhill right into your lap? That's what we're going to talk about. [00:00:22] Hey everybody. Welcome. This is Craig Peterson. I'm so glad you guys are here. There are so many things to understand in this whole world of security and technology is frankly, it's just very, very confusing. It's impossible to catch up on. I'll give you that. And it's very hard to keep up on. So what I've been trying to do here on the show, and then. [00:00:44] And in the webinars that I've been putting on is to help you guys understand it, turn it into English, make it something that's workable. I had quite a week last week, very, very eyeopening to me because I've been working with a few different companies this justice last week that had major security problems and were completely unaware of it. To me, that is just completely unreasonable, right? Well, I shouldn't say they weren't unaware of them. One of them was the pizza shop that I mentioned, and they knew something was up because the payment card industry guys knocked on their door and say, it said, Hey, we got to do an audit. [00:01:27] And they came in, took one, look at the equipment that they had. Back in the, you know, computer room, if you want to call it that, you know, where the server is and immediately failed them. That's all they had to do was see that links us Rotter is sitting up on the wall because the link says is not good enough for businesses to keep your data safe. [00:01:49] And frankly, the same thing is true for many of the other products out there. Now there's a lot of other levels that go beyond where. The payment card industry is requiring. And one of those is for government subcontractors. I have quite a few clients that are government subcontractors, and I think every one of them came to me because they had. [00:02:14] Problems there they were trying to solve something was wrong. It was, it was, computers were slow emails. Weren't getting routed properly. Some of their customers were getting emails that actually weren't sent by them and yet had their return address on them. Right. Those sorts of problems. So we got involved and had a look and figured things out. [00:02:36] And you've heard a few of those stories here. Well, this week was interesting because one of the listeners for the show reached out to me. He got a job. Helping out a business that is a small business. It is, you know, by small, small business standards, it's a decent-sized business, but they make components that are used by the federal government, by the military. [00:03:03] And they were not doing what needed to be done. Not at all. And they think that they should be able to be ready in the next 18 months for the lowest level. And maybe they will, but based on what they do, uh, they got to get a lot more ready, a lot higher. Right. That's the basic definition here. Is, if you make something that either goes boom or at attaches to something that goes, boom, you have to comply with something called DFARs. [00:03:40] And I tar now DFARs is the defense federal acquisition regulation supplement much easier to just say DFAR is isn't it. And this is a set of standards that apply to civilians. And defense agencies in the United States, ITAR gets even higher level and it requires compliance, but I tar basically means yeah. [00:04:04] Yeah. Things go, boom. Okay. So if you make a component, so I have clients that make something as simple as power supplies. And those power supplies are used by military contractors and they go into various types of devices, another client, we went out to them and to help them out, they decided not to spend the money they needed to spend. [00:04:28] I have no idea what they ended up doing, but they make cable harnesses that are used in military systems. And they weren't even close to being compliant, which is, you know, the typical thing that we see. So here's your problem, frankly, because of the new teeth that are in place now where they've taken and they moved it to something called CMMC and the CMMC is requiring them to do. [00:04:58] Even more and it has even more teeth on it. It's absolutely amazing. So we've, this is in place to help protect federal contract information. And a lot of these manufacturers say, Hey, you know, it's not going to happen to me. I make power supplies. I make screws. I make assemblies. And in some cases they make much more fancy stuff, but. [00:05:23] It does. It applies to all of you and organizations that failed to comply with these rules can get hit badly with massive fines, class, oxygen, lawsuits, and also jail time for the owners of the business, for the people who are supposed to be running the business. Real jail time. We're talking about 10-year terms for some of these things. [00:05:50] So we have to be careful. We have to look at what we're doing and we have to understand if what we're doing is the right thing. So how does this apply to you? Well, if you are just a regular civilian, I think you should be happy that finally the federal government. Is trying to protect our information. [00:06:14] Right. We've had the Chinese attacking us and we've been in these businesses where the Chinese had backdoors installed. And what does that mean? What's a backdoor while he imagines that your computers that contain your proprietary information are directly accessible by the Chinese. So that means whether or not it's military, your computer, the information on it is now in the hands of the Chinese. [00:06:44] And in the case of one of our clients, what that means is all of his designs. All of his clients lists all of everything that he has worked his whole life for. He now gets to compete against a Chinese manufacturer that has been given all of that stuff. So imagine that happened to you. What does that mean? [00:07:05] It, it means that our military isn't as secure as we had hoped it'd been. And we could go through all kinds of stories here. I, I really want to kind of stay focused, but what this means is we need to make sure, especially in this kind of post COVID world, that all of our systems are up to date. All of our systems are properly secured. [00:07:31] So this, this company, this week, one of these companies this week, they had put in VPNs and they had used some slightly higher-end equipment. You can't just go and buy SonicWall off of the shelves over at staples, but it does not meet any of these federal guidelines. And what really, really upsets me here is that. [00:07:57]They do a search online for the model of hardware, software, whatever it is they're using. And they're looking for an instance for compliance and it says, yeah, we're DFARs compliant when they are not compliant. It just. Ah, I don't know what to do about it. Maybe it's just me, right? Maybe I'm just a little bit too uptight here, but they're conning people. [00:08:24] They're conning you. And if you've attended my webinars, you know how these VPN companies are, conning is how these privacy protection companies are. Conning how the antivirus vendors are calling you. And I'm also seeing this for our, our military subcontractors. All of them that I've been involved with have been conned. [00:08:46] And now that's not true with the really big ones. Right. I deal with small businesses, 500 employees, and smaller, but. Man. They don't even know what they don't know. And that's part of the problem. Right? That's always part of the problem. So there are a few things I want you guys to, to understand and know, cause this applies to everybody. [00:09:09] First of all. Nest. This is a government organization that comes out with standards. It's a national Institute of standards and technology. And remember, they used to advise that you have these super-duper fancy passwords that are hard to remember and a different password on every machine. And you had to change them every month or two. [00:09:32] Well, they have relaxed that now, and they follow the same guidance that I've been preaching for years, which is. Have a passphrase, a set of words that you remember that you're not going to forget and that you can type in pretty quickly, but it may be 30, 40 characters long. And then use that in conjunction with a good password manager, like one password that is going to keep all of the passwords for you. [00:09:59] So you have the one big, really good master password and then a whole bunch of. A password stored in your password manager. Now let's see multifactor authentication is the next one I have on my list. And it is not what it used to be. Unfortunately, a multifactor authentication. Now a lot of people are looking at it as well. [00:10:22] Uh, it's just a text message. I'm gonna need a text message. Well, okay. That's, isn't that wonderful, but that is not true. Multifactor authentication, you know, multifactor authentication means something that, you know, along with something that you have, like a mobile app or security key. So be careful with this. [00:10:41] And again, if you're government contractor, you've got to use. Special types of key chain storage like TPM or TEA. If you need more information, by all means, reach out to M E me@craigpeterson.com. But if you're looking at getting some of this federal government money, By being a contractor, or if your devices are used or materials are used by military contractors realize that your neck is really on the line. [00:11:13] Now with CMMC long jail term, backbreaking fines, it will put you out of business. If you get audited, or if you lose some of this data, Hey, when we come back, we're going to talk about a lawsuit and, and I think this one's going somewhere. Google got sued for at least $5 billion because Incognito mode is not the incognito mode they've been advertising. [00:11:42] Hey, how sad for fun? Make sure you sign up. This is the fundamental of this book, ask more questions (and then be more quiet) to embrace curiosity and understand rather than give advice. However, you need to be cautious when asking more questions – don’t ask them all at once with ‘drive-by questioning’ (when you fire multiple questions all at once). You will lose the depth of conversation, momentum, and the other person will be confused as to which questions to answer first. Also, be aware of asking leading questions, or advice shrouded in a question, instead ask “what else” and then be quiet and let the other person answer. And finally, just ask it – it’s easy to spend a long time building up a question, giving examples and generally being very long-winded in asking a question rather than just getting on and asking it. One of the benefits of taking a coaching approach is being able to ask the harder questions… so just ask them. BIG IDEA 2 (9:19) – Identify the three P’s. Under great questions, you will discover three things, or the 3 Ps. The project which is the content of the challenge or situations, the people which is really about the relationship between the people, and the patterns – the trends or themes, both positive and negative. Help people find their AHA! moments, whether it’s negative or positive through your questions and by exploring these three areas. This can help them see their positive patterns that they don’t appreciate enough about themselves. BIG IDEA 3 (13:02) – Beware the drama triangle. The drama triangle is taken from more therapeutic models but has a lot of relevance in a coaching context. The drama triangle has three roles – the persecutor, the victim, and the rescuer. If you see people fall into one of these roles, you can ask – ‘how can I help?’. This question can help stop the drama from unfolding by acting as a circuit breaker. So if you hear someone in victim-mode whining about a situation, asking ‘how can I help’ can snap them into a higher level conversation about what really has to happen next or the real challenge (or admit that they were just whining!). These types of coaching conversations don’t have to be sitting down, forty-five minutes sessions but you can use a coaching mindset in the micro-interactions we have with other people – and often these can be the most powerful moments to use a coaching approach. Back in 2004, Tim outsourced a call center work to a BPO in the Philippines and he was surprised by how efficient and cost-effective the service was. Tim realised that the Philippines offers an enormous pool of talent, which can perform not just voice work, but a whole range of knowledge work - the accounting, marketing, customer service, a whole range of services. He then decided to set up his own back office operations in the Philippines for a successful national business in Australia, giving birth to EMAPTA. If forensic accounting is an area that interests you, make sure you listen to this episode in its entirety! Steve Dawson, a CPA in the Lubbock area, shares his 30+ years of experience in the forensic accounting area with us on this episode of Life In Accounting, a podcast production of Where Accountants Go. Finding Your Passion The theme of finding your passion comes up numerous times in this episode. Steve initially happened on accounting as a possible career almost by accident. He started out as a Math major, but realized that wasn't for him so he changed to a General Business major for a while. As Steve puts in, he was in the “introductory to introductory accounting” class when he realized that accounting was the right direction to go. Therefore he quickly changed his major to accounting and the rest is history. Also, as he continued to work in the audit field with Bolinger, Segars, Gilbert & Moss, he realized that it was the forensic accounting area that he most enjoyed. In fact, it was the realization that he wanted to do forensics full-time that eventually led him to take the plunge and start his own firm (Dawson Forensic Group), even though he had attained the position of partner at BSGM by that point. Certified Concealed Carry… One of the areas of discussion that surprised me the most was the danger that can be involved in this type of work. I knew we would be discussing criminal activity, but I thought it would be primarily following a paper trail and involve testifying in court. As it turns out, Steve's firm is frequently contracted by law enforcement organizations at all levels, and the perpetrators they are investigating aren't always the mild-mannered bookkeeper. Steve's firm does work that lands them in precarious situations sometimes, leading to the need for the concealed carry certification. This definitely isn't your typical accounting job! If forensic accounting is something you've considered for your own career, make sure you listen to this interview with Steve Dawson, a true forensic accounting expert.
