Send us a textIn the season 7 finale, Leandra and Elyse are joined by Fio Gede Parma to discuss their book 'The Witch Belongs to the World', and its major themes: what does it really mean to be a witch? We talk about what initiation really is, the pros and cons of following a particular lineage, and the ins and outs of Fio's tradition, the Wildwood Tradition from so-called Australia.Fio Gede Parma (they/she) is a Balinese-Australian international teacher, magical mentor, and award-winning author. They were born in the island of Bali - to Roslyn and John - and descend from Balinese, Chinese, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English peoples. Fio has lived in so-called Australia for most of her life, as north as Thul Garrie Waja/Gurrumbilbarra (Townsville) and as south as Naarm (Melbourne).Fio was raised in an animistic, polytheistic, magic-affirming, spirit-knowing family - in a haunted house - whose traditions were largely impacted by what the west calls Balinese Hinduism. When forced to consider it, some Balinese name their ‘religion' Agama Tirta, Religion of the Holy Water. Ganesha, Siwa (Shiva), Krishna, Parwati Uma, Durga, Hanuman, the Barong and Rangda, the spirits and the ancestors were all spoken of, venerated, and regarded with holy awe. Big fancy churches are results of growth and gratitude of the people. They remind us of greater and lasting realities beyond this temporal world. There's a deeper significance though. Our Church finds its deeper essence when we engage in our mission and service of the people especially the poor.
Karaniwang suot ng mga Filipino sa Australian Citizenship ceremony ang tradisyunal na damit gaya ng barong pero ano ba ang dapat na kasuotan sa nasabing okasyon?

Fio Gede Parma discusses their book The Witch Belongs to the World: A Spell of Becoming.Fio Gede Parma - fee-oh g-deh par-mah - (they/she) is a Balinese-Australian international teacher, magical mentor, and award-winning author. They were born in the island of Bali - to Roslyn and John - and descend from Balinese, Chinese, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English peoples. Fio has lived in so-called Australia for most of her life, as north as Thul Garrie Waja/Gurrumbilbarra (Townsville) and as south as Naarm (Melbourne).Fio awoke as Witch at the age of 11, their numerological life path number (11/2). They dedicated themself to the Craft with a ritual from a book at age 12. Since that time Fio has been involved and initiated in the mysteries of four witch traditions: Wildwood, Anderean, Reclaiming, and Anderson Feri. Fio's magical mentors and teachers have been many, but there are a treasured handful, some among the Mighty Dead now, who have deeply inspired their work in the worlds. Their main teachers have always been the Gods, Spirits, the Witch Houses and Communities themselves, but special acknowledgement goes to Fio's parents, James A., Jarrah, Molly, Jane Meredith, Lee Morgan, Bex, Ravyn Stanfield, Raven Edgewalker, Dawn Isidora, Abel, Gwydion, Cholla - and Ni Wayan Juiti (Fio's father's mother), Felix, and Rose May Dance (1948 - 2021) of the Mighty Dead. The witchcraft and magic of these mystics, healers, spirit-workers, and priestexes deeply touch Fio's life.Fio was raised in an animistic, polytheistic, magic-affirming, spirit-knowing family - in a haunted house - whose traditions were largely impacted by what the west calls Balinese Hinduism. The skills of divination, seership, mediumship, trance possession, spirit-flight, and sorcery are practised in Fio's father's family.Fio started writing about the Craft at an early age and felt a fateful and undeniable vocation to not only immerse in the Craft but to teach witchcraft in the world and help mentor spirit-workers. They have been teaching both privately in covens and publicly at gatherings, festivals, workshops, and intensives since 2007. Fio stepped fully into their profession as a diviner, seer, community priestex and facilitator, working witch, mentor, writer, and teacher in January, 2010. This has been their whole job since that time.Their first book - Spirited: Taking Paganism Beyond the Circle was published by Llewellyn in 2009, and won the COVR award for best Wicca/Pagan book of that year; 2023 release The Witch Belongs to the World: A Spell of Becoming (Llewellyn) is a love-song to witches.https://www.fiogedeparma.com/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3589860/advertisement

Captain Teruk sees Jimmy watching a scuffle between two monkeys intently. When Jimmy tells Teruk that he is finding this friendly fight between the two monkeys cute, Captain Teruk warns him that simple competitions between monkeys can be terribly dangerous. One such contest had almost overturned the throne of Bali. Captain Teruk now proceeds to narrate the tale of the legendary enmity between Barong and Rangda, and how a contest between two monkeys led to an epic clash between them, the repercussions of which nearly toppled the throne of Bali. Biking across Europe, we had to pack light. The good thing about it is we know exactly what to wear daily. But it also meant doing laundry every 2-3 days. If you want to see how we managed to do it, you can see the pictures here: https://johnjonas.com/the-interesting-history-of-the-barong/ If you work in the Philippines, they have a shirt they wear to work that really unique to them. It existed even before Spain colonized them and is still in use today. Let's talk about that. Stay tuned tomorrow for a catch-up episode.

On this episode of The Halo Halo Podcast, Jezzie and Sigi feature the movie "The Fabulous Filipino Brothers", directed by Dante Basco and written by Dante and his brothers and sister. This comedy focuses on a Filipino American family in Southern California gathering for a family wedding. The movie highlights snippets of everyday Filipino life like silog in the morning; a loud boisterous multigenerational home; vicks vapo serving as a solution in a pinch and a sumptious wedding food spread. The four linked vignettes put a spotlight on each brother: Dayo, Duke, David and Danny Boy leading up to the wedding. From SoCal to the streets of Manila, this ambitious movie lets you step into this family united by their love for their culture and each other. Later, Jezzie and Sigi shift their discussion onto Filipino formal wear seen at traditional Filipino weddings–the Barong Tagalog. They discuss the origin and significance of this piece of formal wear and retell stories of wearing the barong for special occasions. Jezzie reminds us wearing a Barong Tagalog is not only about having and wearing your pride in your culture, it's also a dedication to the survival of our culture–a message that's echoed in the Abasta matriarch in “The Fabulous Filipino Brothers.” Filipino culture outside of the Philippines is indeed alive and well, what can you do to continue this dedication?
Found in most banjars across Bali, the distinct appearance of the Barong Landung characters are unmistakeable in the assortment of Balinese religious effigies. This conspicuous couple, always found together, are at face-value just symbols of an old Balinese love story. However, digging deeper, this historic husband and wife drama speaks not of love, but of identity. It is symbolic of Bali's multi-ethnic and multi-religious history, and ultimately of the centuries-long relationship the island has had with China. This new era has created challenges and opportunities for societies around the world. It has also served to underline the clear link between migration and development, as well as the opportunities it offers for co-development, that is, the joint improvement of economic and social conditions at both origin and destination. I typically use Google Maps. Now you may ask how can you use Google Maps without connectivity? You simply have to download the Aruba section from the map prior to losing connectivity. Once you do that, you have basic lead directions for a period of 30 or 90 days before you have to re-download the map. I use it all the time and it has never failed me. The Barong is a protective deity that can take on a variety of animal forms--lions, tigers, and boars are some of the more common images--and each one is addressed using a respectful title such as Great God or Great Lord. Many villages, especially in southern Bali, have their own Barong figure. The Barong mask is kept in a shrine within a temple and brought out for use. The Barong is one of the most prominent images seen in the performing arts of Bali. This video features the Calonarang, a dance drama intended to chase away evil and purify a village.
Barong masks are often sold as souvenirs, but true ritual Barong are created using a particular type of wood with special ceremonies marking key points in the process. In this video, scholar I Wayan Dibia is at the home of mask carver I Wayan Tanguhh and describes the process of repairing a Barong mask. The Amateur Traveler talks to Sam Oppenheim who makes a rare 4th appearance on the show to talk about Bali in Indonesia. Sam started his exploration of Bali in Ubud which is the cultural capital of the area. He met two of the people mentioned in the popular book Eat, Pray, Love: Wayan and Ketut Liyer. In Ubud he attended some of the traditional Balinese dances (Legong, Barong and Kecak). Sam explored the Hindu temples and the resort area of Kuta Beach with its famous nightlife, dove a ship wreck and explored the island by motorcycle. Sam’s does regret was not getting down to Nusa Dua on the southern tip with its wonderful sunsets or out to Komodo.
