We meet artist Puppies Puppies. Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo (b. 1989, Dallas, TX), widely known by the moniker Puppies Puppies, expands ideas around the readymade by imbuing ubiquitous and everyday objects, signifiers, and actions with a personal and political charge. Puppies Puppies works across sculpture, installation, and performance art.She has, for example, reconfigured antibacterial gel dispensers, toilet bowl liquid, the color green, as well as the acts of sleeping, peeing, and taking a pill in installations and performances that challenge ableist frameworks of artistic and capitalist production. Many of Puppies Puppies's exhibitions have also included actionable components: a GoFundMe campaign to support a friend's transition fund, free HIV testing and counseling, and a working shower available for use by the public. Kuriki-Olivo thus asserts that life can be viewed as its own form of endurance practice, especially for those whose very survival is at stake, including trans, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people of color. At the Venice Biennale 2024, Puppies Puppies is exhibiting two works. A Sculpture for Trans Women... (2023) is a life-size bronze sculpture taken from a 3-D scan of the artist's body. Emblazoned with the word “WOMAN”, the work – which will be activated with performances throughout the Biennale – subverts the power of monuments to make visible and celebrates trans life in an act of protest and commemoration.Electric Dress (Atsuko Tanaka) (2023) pays tribute to those killed in 2016 at the mass shooting that took place during a “Latin Night” party at Pulse, a queer nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The sculpture references Atsuko Tanaka's Electric Dress (1956) with LED lights that flicker to the pulse of a heartbeat and lights that cycle through the rainbow colours found in the Progress Pride Flag. Both sculptures honour queer and trans life while confronting oblivion and invisibility.Follow @PuppiesPuppiesJadeSpecial thanks to Daniel Balice of @BaliceHertling gallery for connecting us! https://www.balicehertling.com Hosted on Acast. The Caylee Anthony Case The story of Casey Anthony and her daughter Caylee has captivated the nation since the toddler was first reported missing in July 2008. The saga began on July 15, 2008, when Cindy Anthony, Casey's mother, reported to the police that her 2-year-old granddaughter, Caylee, had been missing for a month. This phone call set off a painstaking search for the toddler and an intense investigation into her then-22-year-old mother, Casey. Investigations into Casey's cell phone, computer, and vehicle revealed internet searches for chloroform and neck-breaking, as well as traces of chloroform and human decomposition in her car trunk. Consequently, Casey was charged with first-degree murder in October 2008. Two months later, Caylee's skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near the Anthony family home in Florida. CSI on Notorious Murders: Caylee Anthony and Pulse Nightclub Shooting - Special Episode. You can also listen to this interview as a free podcast in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website or most major podcast platforms. Throughout her 2011 trial and since her controversial acquittal, Casey has maintained her innocence, offering inconsistent explanations for Caylee's death. Initially, she claimed a babysitter kidnapped Caylee, later stating that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family pool. In the 2022 Peacock documentary “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies,” she accused her father, George Anthony, of staging Caylee's drowning to cover up his alleged sexual abuse of her. The Pulse Nightclub Shooting On June 12, 2016, 29-year-old Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people and wounded 53 others at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, before being fatally shot by Orlando Police officers after a three-hour standoff. In a 9-1-1 call shortly after the shooting began, Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and cited the U.S. killing of Abu Waheeb in Iraq as the trigger for his actions. He later told a negotiator that his actions were motivated by American-led interventions in Iraq and Syria. The FBI deemed the incident a terrorist attack. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest and other social media platforms. Pulse was hosting a "Latin Night," and most victims were Latino. The shooting was the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since the September 11 attacks and the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history until the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Around 320 people were inside the club when Mateen began shooting at 2:02 a.m., killing and injuring dozens. CSI on Notorious Murders: Caylee Anthony and Pulse Nightclub Shooting - Special Episode. On our latest weekly roundup, Terri shares some decluttering success stories, including finding a loving home for her vintage record albums. What we're watching: On Only Murders in the Building's season finale, "Opening Night" (episode 9), we learn whodunit (that is, the multiple whos who done it) and question the wisdom of having very serious conversations in the wings while a show is underway on stage. Plus, of course, the next murder in the building happens, so we're ready for season 4.On Dancing with the Stars, it was Latin Night, or as Terri called it, "Dresses with Sleeves Night." Bruno continued to impress (?) with his collection of mesh shirts, and there were quite a few enjoyable, well-done dances.Catherine's library find this week is books on the amigurumi craft craze. Therein, you can find instructions on how to crochet everything from a doughnut-shaped unicorn to Mr. T to a whole family of dinosaurs. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed how volunteering can be a runaway train (that we've successfully disembarked from; October 10, 2019), care packages for kids (October 9, 2019), and digital hoarding (October 9, 2017).Note: After this episode was recorded, but before Terri edited it, she fell and broke her wrist. So if the editing on this episode is even less professional than usual, have mercy. Next week we will be off while Terri has surgery and recovers. We will be back the week after with stories—you can bet on that. When we come back, our TV watch will cover Motown and Disney nights on Dancing with the Stars as well as the movie Champions. We were quite proud of some of the predictions and connections we made last week, as well as those discussed over on Drinks with Broads, the Substack from the Fug Girls. We also did get the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars after all, and found it enjoyable even at two and a half hours long. All the LINKS - LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISON Week 26 - Music and Lasting Friendships On Friday night I met two friends, Bonnie and Jartu at Volare Bistro for dinner. The food was delicious. We laughed so much thinking about how much fun we had dancing salsa and traveling together. Yes, I met these lovely ladies while I was out dancing salsa. Bonnie reminded me we are at a club called The Duplex on a Friday night. She said I was at my table just dancing my heart out and she came over to say hello. And that started the beginning of a 20+ friendship, all because of salsa dancing. Back in the 90s we didn't have a way to track things unless you wrote them down. There were no cell phones or no handheld devices that you could keep up with things like now… thanks to Facebook I have a few pictures to share of some of my salsa experiences. My discovery of Latin music was because of a dear friend, Ade, who lived in the same apartment complex with me. She invited me to go to a club. I was not a club girl. I tried it after college; it just wasn't my thing. At first I said no. She went out with some friends and the next week she asked me to go again. So, I did something new. And doing something new like going out to a club that played salsa music introduced me to a whole new world. I thank Ade for asking me again. I went from going out that night, to immersing myself in the music. I took a Latin dance class at Georgia State University through the continuing education program. I started going out on Friday nights to the same club we went to, The Sanctuary, which still has Latin Night on Fridays. They had and still have classes before they open for dancing. Because life continues on we don't get out dancing like we used to. And when I say we used to, I mean, we would be out 2 to 3 times a week dancing salsa. I kept a change of clothes and my dancing shoes in my car at all times. I might get a phone call or make a call to Bonnie or Jartu, and say, “where are we dancing tonight?” Bonnie, Jartu, and I have traveled together to Puerto Rico, Miami, and Destin, FL. We have been together since the early 2000's. In 2009 we traveled to Puerto Rico and when we went to San Juan to go dancing, the place was closed for a private event. When we returned to the Ritz Carlton there was a band playing in the lounge so we had our own party with them. We enjoyed dancing and meeting people and the rain forest while we were there. Dancing connected me with such a group of generous, kind people. We had our usual spots on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Over the years we have celebrated birthdays and marriages, divorces, losses of parents, children and all the things that span 20 years of living. It was music, specifically salsa music that brought us together. It is our love for each other that keeps us together as friends. Last year one of our salsa friends, Gregory, transitioned to the Big dance floor and we came together to celebrate his life. Gregory Fitzpatrick gave me this t-shirt, Drop it like it's hot, salsa style, because I used to do a dance move where I would drop down to my heels, come back up and do a body roll… the good old days! We came together as a community of dancers to celebrate Gregory's life with dance. It was great to see each other and feel what only music can make you feel.   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/barbara-faison/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/barbara-faison/support

One of the survivors of that night is Jeannette, a gay single mother struggling to come to terms with a tragedy for which no one will ultimately be held accountable.  In our conversation with Jeannette and Maris, we speak about giving space to heal (physically and mentally), how Maris handled documenting Jeannette's life after surviving such a trauma, how they handled a very intense scene with Jeannette and her mother, Jeannette's community, and more. If you would like to see this film during the Frameline Film Festival, you still have time to grab a ticket for the in person screening or you can stream it at home. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The streets of Campbell River have opened up with a series of free, family-friendly events and entertainment that will continue until September. “We think that this is a great opportunity. Hopefully COVID is starting to leave us and we have the ability to return to a new normal. This whole set of opportunities with the downtown core is meant to bring us out of what we've been experiencing over the last couple of years in reduced ability to program and to get out and interact and socialize. This is really on the flip side of it. We want to be able to blow the lid off of this and get everybody downtown and enjoying what Campbell River has done. Campbell River has a lot to offer both the residents in the surrounding area and visitors to it,“explained Robin Mitchell, the city's Manager of Recreation and Culture “These programs and the opportunities with businesses and the various partnerships that Royce and Karen and Linda have set up, in order for us to be able to run all of these events downtown over the next three months are going to be absolutely mind-blowing.” Karen Chappell, Adult and Community Special Events programmer, added, “We are offering a ton of stuff this summer. We have what is called our Campbell River Live Streets, which has six major events that happen every Wednesday evening in the downtown core, we shut the street and we offer a large event.” This interview took place last Thursday. ‘Go by Bike Week' is now over, but it is an example of the kind of event Campbell River is hosting. The associated activities included: Thursday - a celebration station at Active Living Physiotherapy in Larwood Plaza. (bike maintenance, Track Stand competitions). Friday - celebration station from &-8:30 AM at Seymour Pacific Developments (breakfast) Saturday - Bike Swap at Spirit Square from noon to 4PM. All kids bikes sold for $30. Adult bikes for $60 and premium bikes for $100. Opportunity to test drive e-bikes. Checking the community calendar on the City of Campbell River website, the next special events are both scheduled for Sunday, June 26: Greenways Loop Day and the Campbell River Buskers Festival. School gets out the following Wednesday, June 29, after which this calendar will be bursting with activities. These include: - Battle of the Brushes on July 20, 2022 - an Evening Street Market, - Chalk Art Festival, - Salsa & Latin Night, - Music in the Night - and Rockin' River Country Stomp. “One of our big headliners this summer, which I'm personally really excited about is our finale of the summer for our large live streets. And we have Jesse Roper coming and he's a massive draw on Vancouver island. So we're, we had to really bump up our numbers for licensing and everything for that event,” said Chappell. There are also a lot of activities taking place every week: - Concerts in Spirit Square, every Tuesday at noon and Thursdays at 7 PM. - The Farmer's Market, Sundays from 10 am till 2:00 PM, in Shopper's Row until September 11th. - Lots of smaller events like yoga classes, in-line dance classes, and other daily activities

On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man, killed 49 people and wounded 53 more in a mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub. Orlando Police officers shot and killed him after a three-hour standoff. Pulse was hosting a "Latin Night", and most of the victims were Latino. It is the deadliest incident in the history of violence against LGBTQ people in the United States as well as the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since the September 11 attacks in 2001, and was the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in U.S. history until the shooting in Las Vegas in 2017. Our guest today was the owner of Pulse Nightclub, Barbara Poma. She is now the sole founder and executive director of onePULSE Foundation.  onePULSE Foundation is the nonprofit organization established in the aftermath of the June 12, 2016 tragedy at Pulse nightclub to create a sanctuary of hope and honor and preserve the legacy of the 49 people killed, 68 injured, and countless others who were affected. The four pillars of its mission are to create and support a memorial that opens hearts, a museum that opens minds, educational programs that open eyes, and legacy scholarships that open doors. Today we talk to Barbara about tragedy and healing, and what happens next.   With co-host Brody Levesque

The mass shooting at a queer Latin Night in Orlando in July 2016 sparked a public conversation about access to pleasure and selfhood within conditions of colonization, violence, and negation. Queer Nightlife (U Michigan Press, 2021) joins this conversation by centering queer and trans people of color who apprehend the risky medium of the night to explore, know, and stage their bodies, genders, and sexualities in the face of systemic and social negation. The book focuses on house parties, nightclubs, and bars that offer improvisatory conditions and possibilities for “stranger intimacies,” and that privilege music, dance, and sexual/gender expressions. Queer Nightlife extends the breadth of research on “everynight life” through twenty-five essays and interviews by leading scholars and artists. The book's four sections move temporally from preparing for the night (how do DJs source their sounds, what does it take to travel there, who promotes nightlife, what do people wear?); to the socialities of nightclubs (how are social dance practices introduced and taught, how is the price for sex negotiated, what styles do people adopt to feel and present as desirable?); to the staging and spectacle of the night (how do drag artists confound and celebrate gender, how are spaces designed to create the sensation of spectacularity, whose bodies become a spectacle already?); and finally, how the night continues beyond the club and after sunrise (what kinds of intimacies and gestures remain, how do we go back to the club after Orlando?). Dr. Kemi Adeyemi is assistant professor of gender, women, and sexuality studies and director of The Black Embodiments Studio at the University of Washington. Dr. Kareem Khubchandani is the Mellon Bridge assistant professor in theater, dance, and performance studies, and women's, gender, and sexuality studies at Tufts University. In the early hours of June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen entered Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. In the span of 3 hours, he took the lives in 49 others. Pulse, a gay nightclub, was hosting their weekly "Latin Night". Mateen was shot and killed while in a shootout with Police. This is the second deadliest shooting by a single shooter in US History, behind the 2017 Las Vegas Strip Shooting. To this day, Mateen's exact motive is unclear. During the assault, he called 911 and claimed the attack was in retaliation for the US dropping bombs on Iraq and Syria. The FBI does not believe he was radicalized. Some surviving patrons and former classmates claimed Mateen was a closeted homosexual. We will never know the exact motive.

On June 11, 2016, Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, was hosting "Latin Night", a weekly Saturday night event drawing a primarily Latino crowd.  About 320 people were still inside the club, which was serving last call drinks at around 2:00 a.m. EDT on June 12.  At around the same time, Omar Mateen arrived at the club via rental van, parking it in the parking lot of a neighboring car shop. He got out and walked toward the building armed with a SIG Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol. He was wearing a green, blue, and white plaid dress shirt, a white T-shirt underneath and tan cargo pants. At 2:02 a.m., Mateen bypassed Officer Adam Gruler, a uniformed off-duty Orlando Police Department (OPD) officer working extra duty as a security guard, entered --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thes3podcast/message

I typically use Google Maps. Now you may ask how can you use Google Maps without connectivity? You simply have to download the Aruba section from the map prior to losing connectivity. Once you do that, you have basic lead directions for a period of 30 or 90 days before you have to re-download the map. I use it all the time and it has never failed me.   If you want to be a co-host of this show or simply want to relay feedback, please do send me an email at curt@onehappypodcast.com, message me on Facebook, drop a voice message on our hotline number (302) 635-0815.

Thursday, 8 November (4:00pm): Thursday's Karaoke Party Have you ever wanted to grab the mic and belt out a song?   Most people love to sing in the shower - there, in the privacy of this super small venue, they are superstars. But now they can take their aspirations one step further: sing their hearts out during Thursday afternoon’s Karaoke Party at MooMba Beach. It is a weekly event, held from 4 to 6 pm, and everyone can join in free of charge. Rasta Alvin is the host of the party, which features bucket specials on Heineken, Amstel Bright, Chill and Balashi beer.   Be bold, break the mould, step out of your comfort zone and grab the microphone. Just do it - it will be one more great memory of your trip to Aruba. And who knows: you might be discovered at MooMba! Let’s look into the cruise ships schedule portion for this week.     Our topic for discussion this week is the usability of Google Maps in Aruba. You can download the Aruba map for offline use because not everyone has internet connectivity on the island. I made a post about this on One Happy Podcast’s Facebook group which you may also want to check out. We’ve used it for navigating the island for 3 years now and it has never steered us wrong.   Also, Aruba Ray Ellin had his show on Comedy Central called This Week at the Comedy Cellar debut recently. Its official blurb goes: “This Week at the Comedy Cellar takes an unprecedented look inside New York City's hottest comedy club and the country's top comedians as they tackle all the freshest topics of the week.” Do check it out on Friday nights at 11pm on Comedy Central. If there’s anything at all that you would like to suggest for the show or simply want to relay feedback, please do send me an email at curt@onehappypodcast.com or drop a voice message on our hotline number (302) 635-0815.

**CW: Gun violence, discussion of Islamophobia** Dance and Drama Professor Kareem Khubchandani reads “In Praise of Latin Night at the Queer Club” by Justin Torres. The Orlando nightclub massacre on June 12th, 2016 was an assault on brown and black bodies in an LGBTQ scene. It disrupted what had been a sacred space, somewhere people could go to feel far away from “white, straight America.” Every year, Kareem reads this piece to his Intro to Queer Studies class -- because for him, being in the swirling and bumping club atmosphere is about “really living up to a kind of beauty that you believe you deserve.” When you hear the cadence and rhythm of Torres’ piece, you can almost feel that irresistible energy. In the final episode of season 2, we talk to Kareem about Orlando, drag queens, and care packages from his mom. Produced by Shirley Wang, Jenna Fleischer, and Bobby Familiar
