In this episode of the Expositors Collective Podcast, Mike Neglia speaks with Dr. Wayne Baxter, Associate Professor of New Testament and Greek at Heritage College & Seminary in Cambridge, Ontario. With a Ph.D. in Early Christianity from McMaster University and an M.Div. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Wayne combines academic expertise with years of pastoral experience, having served churches in Windsor, Ottawa, and Toronto. He's the author of several books, including Preparing Sermons from the Page to the Pulpit: Exegesis to Exposition in Seven Steps, a practical guide to sermon preparation. Wayne shares his journey from a non-church background to full-time ministry, reflecting on how his preaching has evolved from being overly technical to more accessible and engaging. He emphasizes the importance of situating Scripture within its broader context (co-text) and how this approach strengthens sermon preparation. Wayne also shares insights into sermon rehearsal, creative illustrations, and connecting Scripture to the daily lives of congregants. Mike and Wayne discuss the challenges of itinerant preaching, the state of expository preaching today, and how pastors can balance theological depth with relevant application. Wayne's heartfelt hope is that his book will bridge the gap between biblical study and impactful preaching, equipping pastors and seminarians to proclaim God's Word faithfully. Whether you're a seasoned preacher or just beginning your journey, this episode is packed with practical tools and encouragement to help you grow in your craft. A Commonwealth Scholar, Dr. Carolyn Weber holds her B.A. Hon. from Huron College at Western University, Canada and her M.Phil. and D.Phil. from Oxford University, England. Dr. Weber is an award-winning author, popular professor and international speaker with talks ranging from campuses world-wide to Billy Graham's Cove and 100 Huntley Street. She has served as faculty at Oxford University, Seattle University, University of San Francisco, Westmont College, Brescia University College and Heritage College and Seminary. She was the first female dean of St. Peter's College, Oxford. Dr. Weber recently relocated to the Nashville, TN area to work more closely with its special creative community dedicated to faith and the arts. She is delighted to serve as a professor at New College Franklin in Franklin, TN, where she is grateful to be part of the rich fellowship of learning at this unique and wonderful college. Carolyn Weber's first memoir, Surprised by Oxford (Thomas Nelson/Harper Collins) won among other distinctions the Grace Irwin Award, the largest award for Christian writing in Canada. Holy is the Day: Living in the Gift of the Present (InterVarsity Press) was short listed for the same prize, and won the faith living category. Surprised by Oxford is the incredible true story of Caro Drake, a young, headstrong American who lands a coveted scholarship to the University of Oxford for her postgraduate studies. Burdened with trust issues and intellectually hostile towards the abstract, Caro begins her time in Oxford with the singular goal of attaining her PhD. But through a tempestuous friendship with a charming young man and the wise counsel of the college's first female provost, Caro begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and the possibility of love. Surprised by Oxford invites audiences into a world of romance, reason, and high calling. The true-life story of college-aged American Caro Drake is a wonder-filled exploration of life's beauty and complexity, experienced in a manner not entirely dissimilar to C.S. Lewis's famous awakening nearly a century ago in the hallowed halls of Oxford, England. Grandpa Bill welcomes two guest at taping , later today -Lisa Jara Menstrual Health Specialist & Soul-based Life Coach About Lisa I'm Lisa from Germany and my pronouns are she/her. As a person I'm both a straight-forward, energetic powerhouse as much as a sensitive soul who enjoys holding space for people. Yet, I've also been conditioned, as a lot of people have, that the expert on me lies somewhere outside, that my perception of the world or situations is wrong and that I have to go looking for validation, approval and happiness “out there”, from someone else.Afraid to do anything wrong, I took on rule after rule, becoming more and more rigid, to the point where my life seemed like an endless chain of tasks, bleak and meaningless. A fight I had to struggle through day after day. Until I decided to get help, started my healing journey and got back in touch with my emotions, which I had suppressed for so many years. After this mental health crisis, I decided I didn't want any other woman to feel that powerless and empty ever again and dedicated my life to guiding women back home to themselves, body, heart, mind and soul.Interested in social transformation, psychology, mysticism, emotional and spiritual healing, I enjoy supporting people to hear, understand and listen to their inner wisdom, which is far greater than our analytical minds can grasp. Helping them to slow down and savor the moments, good and bad, so they feel fully alive and stay true to themselves.Learn More About Lisa-https://lisa-jara.com/en/soul-mail-sign-up/ #Mental Health Awareness,#Spirituality,#Personal Leadership,#Women Empowerment,#Empowering Conscious Living,#Body-Positive,#Emotions,#Highly Sensitive Person (HSP),#Menstrual Health Kathleen Flanagan-Begin Your Journey to Enlightenment About KathleenKathleen Flanagan is a National and International multi-award winning author of Dancing Souls: Merging Heaven and Earth – Book One: The Call. What should contemporary preachers and pastors learn from the influential early Christian leader Augustine, was a prominent theologian and philosopher, who played a significant role in shaping Western philosophy and Christianity through his influential writings. He is considered a major figure among the Church Fathers of the Latin Church during the Patristic Period. His notable works include "The City of God," "On Christian Doctrine," and "Confessions."Shane Angland and Ian Clary join Mike to discuss the influence of Austine on their personal lives and ministries, and also how J.I. Packer used Augustine's commentary on John to help restore the struggling faith of one of Ian's mentors. While Augustine is commonly recognized as a philosopher, theologian and preacher, Shane and Ian argue that it is also important to take note of his role as a pastor and carer of souls. Shane Angland is currently a teaching elder at Ennis Evangelical Church, Ireland. He has served as a missionary in Ukraine and is a Th.M. graduate from Dallas Theological Seminary with an emphasis in historical theology.Dr. Ian Clary is a native of Canada; most recently he lived in Toronto, Ontario, where he served as a minister at West Toronto Baptist Church. He taught at various institutions in Canada, including Redeemer University College and Heritage College and he continues to lecture at Munster Bible College in Cork, Ireland.Ian's doctoral work looked at issues dealing with the Christian interpretation of history with a particular focus on early-modern British evangelicalism. His master's work looked at the reception history of patristics into the post-Reformation period with a focus on Christology.Suggested Links: God Crowns His Own Gifts: Augustine, Grace, and the Monks of Hadrumetum https://hesedandemet.com/product/god-crowns-his-own-gifts-augustine-grace-and-the-monks-of-hadrumetum/ Be sure to subscribe to the Into Theology podcast for Ian's journey through Augustine's Confessions: https://ca.thegospelcoalition.org/into-theology/Recommended Episodes: Shane Angland: The Problem and Promise of Preaching : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/7/7/the-problem-and-the-promise-of-preaching-shane-angland Ian Clary : Learning from the Puritans : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2020/5/14/episode-107-learning-from-the-puritans Bryan Chapell : Pulpit Flourish vs Pastoral Care : https://www.expositorscollective.com/podcast/2022/9/13/pulpit-flourish-vs-pastoral-care-with-bryan-chappell

"Philippians brims over with often quoted passages: 'He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus' (1:6), 'To live is Christ and to die is gain' (1:21), and 'I can do all things through Him who strengthens me' (4:13) are just a few. But the portrait of Jesus Christ as a humble servant serves as the core of Paul's teaching in this letter (2:5–11). "Paul's joy at the mere thought of the Philippian church is undeniable in the letter, and it's that same joy that he wanted the recipients to possess as well. To lead the Philippians to this truth, Paul took them directly to Jesus, teaching them that a community of believers living in harmony with one another comes only through mutual humility modeled after the Savior. Paul wrote that he poured out his life as an offering for the sake of Christ, leading Paul to find great joy and contentment in Christ's service. His letter to the Philippians showed them that by centering their lives on Christ, they, too, might live in true joy." Today, we welcome to the podcast, Dr. Wayne Baxter. Dr. Baxter serves as professor of New Testament and Greek at Heritage College & Seminary in Cambridge, Ontario, where he has been since 2012. Prior to his time in the academy, Dr. Baxter spent ten years in pastoral ministry in Windsor, Ottawa, and Mississauga.

In just over a decade, America will face a shortage of up to 124,000 doctors and 200,000 nurses will need to be hired each year, according to the American Hospital Association. Overall, there will be a 3.2 million shortage of healthcare workers by 2026, according to a white paper presented by https://www.mercer.com/. Some of this is attributable to “COVID burnout” by healthcare workers but we also are facing a crisis of both our population getting older and healthcare workers quitting the profession, says Dr. Kenneth Johnson. Dr. Johnson is the Dean of the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and chief medical officer at Ohio University. Dr. Johnson also serves as chair of the Ohio Council of Medical School Deans. Dr. Johnson says we have known about this looming crisis for years but as a country, we have failed to adequately address it. COVID also has exacerbated this situation. Some 30 percent of healthcare workers are considering leaving the profession and almost 60 percent have reported impacts to their mental health because of work during the pandemic, according to a Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation Survey One reason for a shortage of doctors is that most doctors' residencies in hospitals are funded by Medicare and about 25 years ago, Congress capped the number of residencies as a cost-cutting measure. Congress has failed to agree to remove the cap. Dr. Johnson also says that there is a paucity of faculty members to teach new medical personnel, especially in nursing fields. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing says that 80,000 qualified nursing applicants were turned away in 2019 due to lack of qualified faculty, clinical sites, classroom space and other budget constraints. Dr. Johnson explains to Spectrum host Tom Hodson what needs to be done to quell this crisis.

It seems we could almost reuse many of the introductory comments for the books of the Bible in this corner of the canon. Like Isaiah and Jeremiah before it, Ezekiel is a significant text through which to wade. Opening his work on this book, Charles Dyer wrote, "For the average reader of the Bible, the Book of Ezekiel is mostly a perplexing maze of incoherent visions—a kaleidoscope of whirling wheels and dry bones that defy interpretation. This impression often causes readers to shy away from studying the book and to miss one of the great literary and spiritual portions of the Old Testament" ("Ezekiel," BKC, 1224–25). Well, we won't shy away, but mainly because we have a lot of help. Dr. Rick Reed has served as the President of Heritage College and Seminary since January 2013 where he also teaches in the areas of preaching and pastoral theology. Of all the books of the Bible, there may not be one that is more consistently beloved, more pastorally accessible, and more desperately read than the Psalms. In the many ways it is unique within the canon of Scripture, not the least of which is that it contains inspired words from God, through people, directed back toward God. As one theologian has noted, "The Psalms are one of the most dearly loved books in the Bible. For generations, they have been one of our greatest treasures as God's people. ... We go to the Psalms when we're laughing and when we're crying. Amazingly, they often say what we feel but couldn't find the words to describe" (Johnston, The Psalms, Volume 1, 13). To help us tackle this massive, 150-chapter song book, we welcome to the podcast Dr. Ian Vaillancourt. Dr. Vaillancourt currently serves as Associate Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Heritage College and Seminary in Cambridge, Ontario. He's an ordained pastor in the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada and served in pastoral roles for fourteen years before transitioning to the classroom full-time. His passion, wherever he is, is to exalt Christ from the Old Testament. And we're going to watch him do just that in this episode.

How do you start a college? It would take a miracle. “But maybe a miracle can happen,” Sister Kathleen Ross said to herself, inspired by Mother Marie Rose and by the community in the Yakima Valley asking for access to higher education. Sr. Kathleen worked with Martha B. Yallup and Violet Lumley Rau to found Heritage College and oversaw its growth from 85 students to more than 1,400 during her tenure as President. In this episode of Holy Names Sisters: Women on a Mission, she reflects on how the college was built to empower transformational, student-centric education.

"Now it came about after the death of Moses ... " (1:1). It's with these sad-but-hopeful words the Holy Spirit opens the sixth book of the Bible—Joshua. Much is changing for the nation of Israel at this point of their history. They've been created and called (Genesis), freed and led (Exodus), taught and guided (Leviticus), disciplined and counted (Numbers), re-disciplined and re-taught (Deuteronomy). But now they have a new leader, new wind in their sails, and they're about to step over the border of their new land, a home promised to them by God himself. To help us better understand the biblical epic that is Joshua, we welcome to the podcast Dr. David Barker.
