On today's episode I have artist and writer Nathan Hamill and Filipkowski! I first found Nathan's work at DesignerCon back in 2019, which eventually led me to the comic strip that he and Eric started making called "2 Dumb Dinos". After over 295 comic strips, they released a "2 Dumb Dino's" book back in October, and I have absolutely loved it! I talked with Nathan and Eric about how they got their start, what led to them creating "2 Dumb Dinos", Nathan working at Bongo Comics on "The Simpsons", Eric working on "Drunk History" where he played Abraham Lincoln, getting to work on South Park and Sponge Bob, their mutual bonding over The Simpsons and the Chris Elliot sitcom, "Get A Life", and so much more. A huge Thank You to Nathan and Eric for taking the time to join me on the show. Make sure to follow them on all of the links at www.onthemicpodcast.com and pick up a copy of "2 Dumb Dinos" online or at. your local comic book shop! Thanks, Nathan and Eric! Enjoy the episode!

Hey all! Welcome, comic enthusiasts and horror aficionados! Today, we're plunging into the chilling world of "Karcis #1", the premiere offering from the innovative BlaX Trauma Productions. This new entry in the horror genre blends paranormal investigation with a gripping narrative set in the frozen landscapes of Alaska. The Chilling Premise "Karcis #1" introduces us to Paul Karcis, a paranormal investigator drawn into a harrowing mystery in Thompson Pass, Alaska. When a mutilated body is discovered in this secluded town, Karcis finds himself entangled in a web of supernatural forces and unspeakable horrors. The setting of a snowy Alaskan town adds an extra layer of isolation and menace to the story, promising to deliver a horror experience that is both unique and unsettling. The Artistic Dream Team The creative team behind "Karcis #1" is a blend of diverse talents, each bringing their unique skills to the table. Nathan Kelly, a US Army veteran turned comic artist, and Don Mathias, a Boston-based cartoonist with a portfolio including work for DARK HORSE and BONGO COMICS, are just a couple of the names associated with this project. Their combined expertise is set to bring the world of "Karcis" to life in a way that is visually stunning and emotionally resonant. Brian Hawkins, a name synonymous with compelling storytelling and profound narratives, is the mastermind behind "Karcis #1". Known for his works like "Black Cotton" and "The Vineyard", Hawkins brings his unique vision to life through BlaX Trauma Productions. This Kickstarter campaign isn't just a launchpad for "Karcis #1"; it's a declaration of independence in the comic book world. By choosing Kickstarter as the primary distribution channel, Hawkins and his team are directly connecting with readers and comic book enthusiasts, ensuring that their stories are told exactly as they envision. My Podcast Encounter: Brian Hawkins on Geek Freaks I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Brian Hawkins on my podcast, Geek Freaks. This conversation offered an insightful glimpse into the creative process and the passion driving this project. Hawkins' dedication to storytelling and his vision for BlaX Trauma Productions were palpable throughout our discussion, leaving me eagerly anticipating the release of "Karcis #1". "Karcis #1" is more than just a comic book; it's a bold step forward in the world of horror storytelling. With a gripping narrative, a talented creative team, and the backing of a passionate community, it promises to be a standout addition to any horror enthusiast's collection. Keep an eye on this Kickstarter campaign, as "Karcis #1" is set to redefine what we expect from horror comics. Bongo Comics has been publishing Simpsons and Futurama comics for decades. With the release of the new season of Futurama, we take our first look at this corner of the comic book universe with the Simpsons/Futurama Crossover Crisis collection, compiling two different 2-issue crossover events from 2002 and 2005. But how do these gag comics compare with some of the others that we've read? And will we be the next voice cast for the Groening-verse? Kia or Chris? The answers lie within. And of course, we continue our long read of Knightfall with Chapter 17 in Batman #499, in which nobody bothers to tell Robin anything at all. Next Time: The Eisner Award-winning Nightwing: Leaping Into the Light by Tom Taylor & Bruce Redondo!

Jeepers! We're back with part TWO of our deep dive into Bongo Comics' "Radioactive Man" series. In the 1990s, at the height of "The Simpsons'" popularity, Bongo Comics decided to bring Bart Simpson's favourite superhero, Radioactive Man, to life! The series was written by Steve Vance (who also did layouts), with finished art by Bill Morrison and co-plotting/colours by Cindy Vance. Each issue jumps around in the fictional history of Radioactive Man and in this episode we examine the last four issues: #216 (from 1972), #412 (from 1980), #679 (from 1986) and #1,000 (from 1995). Each issue is PACKED with homages to/parodies of superhero comics, background jokes and references to "The Simpsons." There's so much thought and care put into each and every panel. This is one of Matt's all-time favourite series, but at the start of our first episode, Cale wasn't as excited about the book. Will Matt's enthusiasm lead to more appreciation from Cale? You'll have to listen to find out! We will be back in two weeks for "Batman: Year One" by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli. A re-telling of Batman's origin, this graphic novel is set in the same universe as Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" (make sure you listen to our 10th episode) and re-teams him with his "Daredevil: Born Again" collaborator (so make sure you listen to our 8th episode as well)! We've been posting a ton of images on social media, celebrating all of the classic comics that have influenced "Radioactive Man." You can follow us @mattandcalereadcomics on Instagram and Facebook or @mattandcaleread on Twitter.
Our comic aficionados celebrate 20 episodes with a deep dive into one of Matt's (and Bart Simpson's) favourite comic: "Radioactive Man"! A spin-off of "The Simpsons," this six-part limited series was published from 1993 to 1994 by Bongo Comics. Radioactive Man is a love letter/parody/deconstruction/celebration of superhero comics, jumping between time periods from issue to issue. And in classic "Simpsons" style, it's hilarious! We had so much to say about this series (by Steve & Cindy Vance and Bill Morrison) that this is our second ever two-part episode! In part one, we will discuss the characters and the first two issues in depth (Issue #1 from 1952 and Issue #88 from 1962). Bongo Comics is now defunct and the series is out of print, so why not make a trip to your local comic book store and explore the back issues? Join us in two weeks for the second part of this episode, where we discuss the remaining four issues (Issue #216 from 1972, Issue 412 from 1980, Issue #679 from 1986 and Issue #1,000 from 1995). You can follow us @mattandcalereadcomics on Instagram and Facebook or @mattandcaleread on Twitter.
Matt's wife, Emma, joins our comics aficionados to discuss the first graphic novel she ever read: "Clumsy" by Jeffrey Brown! "Clumsy" is Brown's first graphic novel, an autobiographical diary-style comic about a year-long long-distance relationship. Brown's writing is brutally honest and revealing and his art style is messy and immediate. It's almost as if he is bleeding on to the page. All three of us found plenty to relate to amongst the book's many vignettes as Brown is deeply candid about his love life. Emma had never read a graphic novel before dating Matt, but now she is his muse and star of his autobiographical "Smith vs Smith" series. Fans of Jeffrey Brown's work will also enjoy Matt's graphic novel, "You're Stuck With Me Now," the true story of how he and Emma met while teaching in Kuwait, how Matt proposed, and how Emma tricked Matt into living with two cats. You can grab a copy of the book online at SmithvsSmith.com/store and see more of Matt's comics about Emma on Instagram @smithvssmithcomics. You can follow the podcast on Instagram and Facebook @mattandcalereadomics and on Twitter @mattandcaleread. We will be back in two weeks for the first of a special two-part episode on one of Matt's favourite childhood comics: "Radioactive Man," a spin off of Bongo Comics' "The Simpsons Comics"!
Bingo Bango Bongo! If you thought Maude couldn't get any stiller than her recent Season 8 appearances, you thought wrong! We're back at it and gracing the timeless pages of Bongo Comics for three more fantastic Maude NON TELEVISUAL appearances! First up, Bart Simpson Comics' Issue 42 “Battle of the Plexes”- written by Tom Peyer- gives us a glimpse into something we had only prior dreamed possible...intrigued? Well there's more! Next up, regular Simpsons Comics Issue 41's story “Bart Simpson and the Krusty Brand Fun Factory”- written by Jesse Leon McCann and Robert L. Graff- sees Maude pop up just for one panel alone! What is she doing? Where is she going? We can only speculate, and speculate we shall, will, and did. And finally, the real meat of the Bongo Cast- Simpsons Comics Issue 11. “Fallen Flanders”- written by Bill Morrison. Within the spectrum of colours and lines on the pages infront of us, Maude takes the most centre of stages that we might have ever seen her take! After an A-R-G-U-M-E-N-T with Neddy in the Jebediah Springfield Forest, Maude finds it hard to control her emotions...especially when Neddy might be deaddy. Please, I implore you, tune in immediately!
Bill Morrison joins me again this week to talk even more about Simpsons merchandising. If you're unfamiliar with Bill, he has designed countless pieces of artwork for The Simpsons - from newspaper ads and magazine covers, to toy and video game packaging. He also co-founded Bongo Comics with Matt Groening, and has done and continues to do so much cool stuff!Other topics include DC vs. Marvel, greeting cards, and a story about a very special issue of Treehouse of Horror comics. To hear the first interview with Bill, go check out Episode 14!
In our first official episode of 2021 we talk to a complete Legend in the illustration world, Bill Morrison. From his work with Disney to the Simpsons to even being co-founder of Bongo Comics with Matt Groening, Bill Morrison has definitely done it all. He tells us so many great stories from working on a Beatles illustration to drawing up Disney movie posters. This is a great way to kick off the New Year so grab your skateboard and a Krusty burger and come on over to Springfield with us! https://instagram.com/atomicbattery?igshid=1g4gm5ws52i0w https://twitter.com/billmorrisonman?s=11
It's that time again, we're almost at the halfway point of the season so it's time to flip open the Bongo Comics for another inspection of Maude's inky adventures. All business, the MFDBers are looking into FIVE Bongo Comics this time around! First up is “Send in the Clowns”- written by Mary Trainor- which gives us a brief look at Maude's response to ANOTHER armageddon! Next is “Slobberwacky” -written by Jesse Leon McCann- where Maude can be seen in sepia toned glory, taking part in ANOTHER parody? You betcha! Third is “Around Town With Ned Flanders”- again written by Jesse Leon McCann. With a title like that, Maude's got to be in more than one panel surely? You're wrong. And don't call me Maude. Buckle up by the way it's a long one. Fourth up is “The Simpsons Save The World”- written by Ty Templeton- and we take our furthest ever look into the future...and a statue of the Flanders family that may be telling history slightly falsely. And finally, the piece de la resistance. In “Verti-Go-Areeno”- written by Chuck Dixon- Ned references RuPaul and then meets a woman who looks a big diddly deal like our sweet Maude...but this Maude has a dark side...Tune in to this excessively long episode to find out more!
Some of us knew of her wit and great writing even before she started writing comics, reading her column "You All Be Sorry!" on Comic Book Resources, but we couldn't even imagine how good she really was until she started working for Bongo Comics, and then writing Deadpool for Marvel. But she EXPLODED into our collective imaginations when she moved to DC to create the definitive run on BIRDS OF PREY. Her time on Batgirl is also beloved by the fans. She's also created creator-owned books like Welcome to Tranquility and she's come back to Marvel with books like Domino and its sequel Domino: Hotshots. I am talking, of course, about the amaaaaaaazing GAIL SIMONE! We've talked about life, the language of comics and what's unique about it, the craft, art, science music, movies, tv... and everything else we could think of! And she also answered your questions, soooo... This week, we welcome Bill Morrison to the show. Bill is perhaps best known as one of the cofounders - with The Simpsons creator Matt Groening - of Bongo Comics, which has been the one and only home of The Simpsons and Futurama comics for almost 25 years. On this episode, we chat about his time at Bongo, how they manage to keep coming up with new stories after more than 230 issues (and 27 seasons on TV), whether he ever got tired of the Springfield characters, his own series Roswell: Little Green Man, and his time working on commercial Disney projects and the urban legends he spawned (especially on particular poster for The Little Mermaid).
