It always takes time for revolutionary technologies to establish themselves. Blockchain is no exception. Although the pace of mass adoption is speeding up – the telephone took 70 years to achieve 50 per cent market penetration among consumers, while smartphones managed that in three – blockchain is more akin to a general-purpose technology such as electricity in its ability to transform a wide range of commercial activities. As such, it must solve engineering problems that constrain its growth, of which lack of speed and scalability is the most obvious. But blockchain shares with all forms of digital technology the ability to scale exponentially once the engineering problems are solved. This webinar, hosted in partnership with Trade and Invest Wales and Fintech Wales, will assess how close blockchain technology is to taking off into exponential growth and how it could change the entire shape and structure of economies. George Gilder—A New Way to Think About Money: The Time Theory of Value - The Wiggin Sessions EP18

There are obvious flaws in Marx's labor theory of value, the idea that the value of a commodity can be objectively measured by the average number of hours required to produce it. But George Gilder is exploring a new way to think about money built around the time theory of value, an idea that frames currency as a measure based on time—much like the meter, the kilogram or the lumen. George is the most knowledgeable man in America when it comes to the future of technology and its impact on our lives. An established writer, investor and economist, George has an uncanny ability to see how new breakthroughs will play out, and he shares his ideas through Gilder's Daily Prophecy. On this episode of The Wiggin Sessions, George joins me to discuss the three principal ideas in his forthcoming book, Life After Capitalism, beginning with the theory that economic growth is fundamentally a learning curve. George shares his interdisciplinary approach to developing new ideas, describing how he thinks about money as tokenized time and what's missing from our current measures of economic growth. Listen in for George's perspective on how governments are using money as an instrument of power (and why that stifles growth) and get his take on the crypto movement's potential to emerge a new economy. Key Takeaways   How George got interested in the semiconductor industry and information technology  George's theory that economic growth is a learning curve How globalization improves our ability to fight pandemics and how the same concept applies to capitalism The impetus to plan and control among governments and current elites The idea of Google Marxism and how we are repeating Marx's greatest error George's interdisciplinary approach to developing new ideas The three principal ideas in George's forthcoming book Life After Capitalism How George frames money as tokenized time How George thinks about the time value of gold in a way that's not related to speculation How economic measures fail to recognize the huge technological progress that's underway George's take on how governments are using money as an instrument of power rather than an instrument of knowledge—and why that stifles economic growth The great mistake cryptocurrencies are making right now  Why George believes a new economy will emerge from the crypto movement Connect with George Gilder Gilder's Daily Prophecy Connect with Addison Wiggin Consilience Financial Be sure to follow The Wiggin Sessions on your socials. When grappling with competition issues in the digital economy, Google is often the first name to come up.  The tech powerhouse has been in the firing line of competition authorities in Europe. Its business model and strategies have sparked intense debate about what big data and big analytics mean for competition and how or even whether antitrust enforcers should respond. And, yet, for users who share their most intimate details with the search engine, Google has been equated with a "modern-day God". In this episode of Competition Lore, I am delighted to share the opportunity that I had to discuss these and related issues with Google’s Chief Economist, Hal Varian. Hal was not only generous with his time but with his views ranging from general topics such as the role of economics and populism in antitrust to specific issues raised by the European Commission’s decisions against in the Shopping and Android cases. Aside from setting up the interview, Google had no other input to the production of this episode. Hal hinted in the episode at a second edition of his co-authored best-selling book; let’s hope we can hold him to that!  But if you want to read the first edition, it is Information Rules: A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy.   The episode features an interjection from Professor Scott Galloway with his thesis that Google is a “modern day God”. You may find his book, The Four, of interest or you could listen to his TED Talk. Or, if you’re one of those who likes to contemplate whether there is “life after Google”, then you should read the book by George Gilder, Life After Google: The Fall of Big Data and Rise of the Blockchain Economy, also referred to in the episode. Or you could just watch this on Youtube. Featuring regular cut-through interviews with leading thinkers, movers and shakers, Competition Lore is a podcast series that engages us all in a debate about the transformative potential and risks of digitalised competition. Join Caron Beaton-Wells, Professor in Competition Law at the University of Melbourne, to tackle what it means to participate as a competitor, consumer or citizen in a digital economy and society. Let’s talk a little bit about client expectations, shall we? They're changing, if you haven’t noticed. You have noticed, right? The expectations of our clients and customers are different than they were even just five years ago – and the reason, in large part, is technology. Let's take search, for example. There’s an interesting book called Life After Google: The Fall of Big Data and the Rise of the Blockchain Economy by George Gilder, and early on in the book, Gilder makes the point that folks who search the Internet – almost everybody, in other words – are extremely impatient. We don't like to wait. Gilder says research shows that we're generally satisfied when results are delivered within one-twentieth of a second, but any slower that that and we start to get antsy. Google was first founded in 1998, so that’s a lot of change in just 20 years – but the pace is only picking up and we have to start getting ahead of that. That's where our guest comes in. Ryan Estis is a sales and leadership expert who gave the keynote address at that very same CCH User Conference. He says services like Netflix, Uber, and AirBNB represent a huge shift in customer experience, and accounting and finance pros can stand to learn something from these companies. The most popular criticism of the crypto space is its lack of stability. What if you could solve for volatility, leveraging a decentralized stablecoin to mitigate the risk associated with a cryptocurrency portfolio? And how would a market risk manager from the traditional finance and investment industry assess the current risk profile of the blockchain space? Steven Becker is the President and COO of MakerDAO, a decentralized, autonomous organization on the Ethereum blockchain. Based in Santa Cruz, California, Maker seeks to realize the potential of cryptocurrency through its Dai stablecoin, collateral loans and decentralized governance. Today we met with Deryck Graham of First Digital Capital, who’s sponsoring the live community event ‘Blockchain Economy’ happening next week in Perth, on Tues 21st August with a view to attracting crypto enthusiasts, blockchain professionals, investors and those simply wanting to learn more about all of the above. The main purpose of the event being education and networking. Guest speakers include a veritable New York line up starting with Dr Scott Stornetta, Co-Inventor of the Blockchain, Dr David Yermack, Professor of Finance at NYU Business School and currently working for a month with the University of Western Australia, and Justin Dombrowski, CEO of Soho who is presently collaborating with First Digital Capital. While we questioned Deryck about the obvious lack of women in the speakers’ line up, he assured us that Fremantle’s very own Dr Jemma Green was unable to join the event that evening and that visiting Simonne Hurse of Techfest-club.com and Satis group would be among panellists on the night. I really really care about getting more women involved in all this, and I co-run a group for women in tech here in NYC, with 2000 members. We're always looking for excellent speakers + companies to sponsor the group, please get in touch if you'd like to get involved. (http://www.techfest-club.com/) From Simonne’s profile on LinkedIn. Dr Scott Stornetta struck our imagination and Amy-Rose is musing over whether he’s actually Satoshi, or better, Scottoshi… Currently a high-school maths teacher, he started working on the blockchain idea back in 1991 while working as a researcher at Bell Labs, before even the unfolding of the internet. The research involved whether he and a colleague, could make a digital file unbreakable and indelible, according to Deryck. They were unable to prove their hypothesis, but then 3 months later, they couldn’t prove that it COULDN’T be done either… Some time later while queuing at a busy restaurant one Sunday lunch, he had an ‘ahah’ moment when he observed all the people lined up in front and behind him, with the other diners watching them in line… “Hashtags in a chain were the people in the queue, and the distributed ledger were the people watching us in the crowd…” Dr Scott Stornetta’s work is mentioned 3 times in the Bitcoin whitepaper by Satoshi Nakamoto. Deryck has been involved in a number of community charity events, one that saw Perth Porsche drivers take children out for a convoy ride through the streets and city of Perth in conjunction with Make-a-Wish Australia (transforming the lives of children battling life-threatening medical conditions through the healing power of a wish), raising in the meantime hundreds of thousands of dollars. He currently runs Classic Cars & Coffees one Sunday a month at the University of WA, where between 350 to 550 cars are showcased by members who raise funds for charities. City Journal editor Brian Anderson joins Vanessa Mendoza, executive vice president of the Manhattan Institute, to discuss Brian's summer and vacation reading list. Summer is traditionally a time when Americans can catch up on books that they've been meaning to read (or reread). We asked Brian to talk about what books are on his list this year, how he decides what to read, and more. Check out Brian's summer reading list, in the order discussed: The Masque of Africa: Glimpses of African Belief, by V.S. Naipaul. Leo Strauss on Political Philosophy: Responding to the Challenge of Positivism and Historicism, edited by Catherine H. Zuckert Invested: How Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger Taught Me to Master My Mind, My Emotions, and My Money (with a Little Help from My Dad), by Danielle and Phil Town Aristotle's Way: How Ancient Wisdom Can Change Your Life, by Edith Hall Room to Dream, by David Lynch and Kristine McKenna Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, by Greg McKeown Life After Google: The Fall of Big Data and the Rise of the Blockchain Economy, by George Gilder

We’ve got royalty on the show today, as our guests are none other than Ron Baker and Ed Kless, co-hosts of the influential podcast Soul of the Enterprise: Business in the Knowledge Economy. They are two of the deepest thinkers I’ve ever met, and they’ll challenge YOU to think deeper about, too (they’re a bit fanatical about that, in fact, which is one of the things I love about them). Before we dig into the meat of the show, let’s learn a little bit more about these two: Ron started his career as a CPA in 1984 with KPMG before going on to found the VeraSage Institute, which is a leading think tank dedicated to educating professionals. He is also THE leading evangelist for value pricing and killing the time sheet. Ed is Senior Director of Partner Development and Strategy at Sage and a Senior Fellow at the VeraSage Institute. So, all of that is just lip service to the fact that these guys are guys you need to listen to. They know their stuff and they’re not afraid to tell you about what YOU need to know about where this profession is going – and what you need to be doing to stay ahead. In This Conversation We Cover: Why the billable hour is on its way out (and why the time sheet needs to watch its back) The argument against cost accounting How we can start thinking about moving this profession forward Why Ron thinks the profession should lose its regulated monopoly Changing & innovating our business model What the future of the profession looks like to Ron & Ed The Robots Aren’t All Bad There was a report from PwC out of the U.K. about A.I. and automation, but don’t worry – this isn’t the same old story about robots coming to steal our jobs. Actually, it’s a much more positive perspective on the impact of automation: “AI will create as many jobs as it displaces by boosting economic growth.” In the PwC report, it says artificial intelligence is set to create 7.2 million jobs over the next 20 years, slightly more than the 7 million jobs predicted to be lost to automation over the same time span. That’s right – A.I. will create MORE jobs than it will destroy over the next 20 years, but we don’t often hear that side of narrative. Now, there is a caveat: Some professions will benefit more than others from that level of job creation. Health care, for example, will benefit significantly. On the other hand, manufacturing will be on the losing end of that spectrum. But what about the accounting and finance profession? PwC lumps it into a category called “Financial and Insurance Activities,” and that will be on the losing end as well. According to PwC, we’re going to see an 18 percent increase in job creation and a 25 percent decrease in job displacement. So we’ve got some work to do. The important takeaway, however, is that technology is as much a job creator as it is a job destroyer, and we don’t often stop and think about that. Nor do we often stop and think about the fact that if we take the time to learn a few new vital skills, we might have the opportunity to seamlessly move into some of these new jobs that technology will be creating. We don’t have to fade into irrelevance – We can learn our way into some future-proofed careers!
