We didn't exactly follow the normal episode pattern. But that's okay. Bob taught us about how the history of his people has brought him where he is and makes him who he is. His ancestors and their stories really matter. And maybe we don't have a direct "link" with the stories in The Book of Mormon, those stories really matter and bring us as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where we are and who we are. I also loved his description of all the different ways songs have come to him and his family. Each song has its own story and influence. I think the analogy there is wonderful for each of us--that our "stories" can be influenced and completed through different means. It was wonderful to talk with Bob. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6bYhZpIX3WwOT74fx3f9dN?si=NrEWTcCFS-aYODnnCRKJqw Here is his band's Spotify link.

If you go to a grocery store in the United States and pick up a box of cereal, you expect to find a white box on the back of the package with information in Helvetica Black about the food's macronutrients (things like fat and protein) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). The Nutrition Facts label is so ubiquitous that you may not even notice it. But how did it get there and why does it look the way it does? The history of that label is our story this week. Joining me to discuss the history of food labeling in the United States is Dr. Xaq Frohlich, Associate Professor of History of Technology in the Department of History at Auburn University, and author of From Label to Table: Regulating Food in America in the Information Age. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode music is “Oh, you candy kid,” composed by John L. Golden, with lyrics by Bob Adams, and performed by Ada Jones in 1909; the audio is in the public domain and available via the Library of Congress's National Jukebox. The episode image is “FDA Label Man,” an ad produced by the FDA for the nutritional label; the image is in the public domain as a United States government work and is available via the FDA Flickr. On this week's podcast, Rad interviews Dr. Bob Adams who served fourteen years in the Navy and eighteen years in the Army. He is the author of 3 books, including Six Days of Impossible which details his experiences during SEAL training class and the 11 of 70 men who achieved the impossible. After his time as a Commander in the Navy, he changed services to attend medical school where he applied his analytical skills to look back at the men that he shivered and struggled with through Hell Week together. As a Colonel in the US Army Medical Corps, Bob managed 5 large full-service family practice clinics, was a command surgeon with the US Army Delta Force, was a department chief for the Department of Deployment Health, and was a recipient of the Lifetime Medical Achievement Award (Order of Military Medical Merit). Today, Dr. Bob gives his very timely opinion on the recent deaths during Hell Week and how it is very unlikely that Hell Week itself is to blame for it. He zeroes in on one common denominator between the two deaths and that is the mandatory COVID shots that these men got. He also shares some of the most memorable moments during his time with the Airborne, including the three occasions that his main chute failed and he had to pull his reserve parachute during freefall and a particularly heroic middle-of-the-night ambulance transfer in enemy territory. Dr. Bob answers some viewer questions, including his tips on combat shooting, running more because endurance is everything on the field, improvising tools to save people's lives, and flyfishing to keep his mental health on point. Dr. Bob Adams, a former Navy SEAL joins Tim to talk about how a Navy SEAL is made, from what he needs going in, to Hell Week, to the SEALS' intensive training, and life as a SEAL. Bob also became a medical doctor after his SEAL career, and then joined the US. Army's elite Delta Force as a medical doctor . In this episode, Bob about the a very specific part of his military history, and that is the storied orientation would-be SEALs have to go through before they can become Navy SEALs. Today we're going to talk about Hell Week. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Hell_Week_Navy_Seals_auphonic.mp3 President John F. Kennedy, a former Navy man himself, was the one who established the U.S. Navy SEALs in 1962. The idea was to create an elite maritime military force to conduct unconventional warfare. Their job was and is to carry out the types of clandestine, small-unit, high-impact missions that large forces cannot do. SEALs also conduct on-the-ground reconnaissance of strategic targets that may then be attacked by larger forces. Usually, what helps distinguish Navy SEAL operations is that they start and end in or near a body of water, like a river, the ocean, a swamp or a coastline. Navy SEALs train to operate in all environments, on land and in the sea. They often work in climate extremes. From the desert to the arctic, to the jungle. Not everyone who wants to be a Navy SEAL gets to be one. You have to earn it, and to do that, you start by going through one of the toughest weeks in your life. The Navy SEALs call it, “Hell Week.” Hell Week is held the third week of the first phase of SEAL training. It consists of 5 and ½ days of cold, wet, brutally difficult operational training on less than four hours of sleep. If you go through Hell Week, you are tested for your physical endurance, your mental toughness, your ability to endure pain and cold, your teamwork, your attitude and your ability to perform work under high physical and mental stress. You're sleep-deprived. But ultimately, it's your determination, your will and your desire that are tested. Only one-fourth of those who start Hell week make it to the end of those five and ½ days. One out of every four trainees survive Hell week and go on in their training to become SEALs. Bob Adams was a Navy SEAL. When he thinks of Hell Week, there are some things he never forgets. Bob Adams' Great-Great-Grandfather's battlefield commission at Gettysburg hangs on the office wall, a reminder of generations of service. But Bob Adams almost broke the tradition, a grandson of the CNO from the Naval Academy Class of 1926, Bob was “more interested in motorcycles and girls” than going into the military until he read an article about the then very secret Navy special warfare operatives. That article changed his course, and Bob Adams headed to the Naval Academy with the Class of 1973 determined to become a SEAL. Today, Adams is a retired physician, an author, and veteran who is still paying it forward. Visit the Swords and Seals website. The stops along the way suggest the course was not so straight and narrow. Because there were only three slots for the Class of 1973, for Adams spent time in the fleet before being accepted to BUD/S training. Adams would be one of eleven out of 70 to complete SEAL training and pin on the Trident. He would earn his MBA, enter the business world and hate it, and then decide, at the age of 35, to apply to medical school. With an Army scholarship in hand, Adams resigned his Navy commission, and his 0-5 rank, and became a freshly minted Second Lieutenant. He would become a Command Surgeon within Army Special Operations and also deploy to Iraq with the 82nd. And… build a private medical practice outside Raleigh, NC, then author two books, support veteran causes, and mentor entrepreneurs in medicine. He's busy even in retirement. We asked Bob to step into the Spotlight on the VeteranCrowd Network. Stories from the Stacks – A Soundtrack to an Investment Advisor’s Life with Olde Raleigh Financial
Olde Raleigh Financial's Meet the Masters Video Series https://olderaleighfinancial.com Olde Raleigh Financial Group had the opportunity to interview Dr. Bob Adams. Dr. Adams is a North Carolina-based retired physician, former Navy SEAL with an MBA, and an Eagle Scout. He is currently a Healthcare Consultant, public speaker, and the author of the book Six Days of Impossible: Navy SEAL Hell Week - A Doctor Looks Back. Dr. Adam's comments are based on a career in healthcare that included setting up military hospitals in hostile environments. He is refreshingly forward with his opinion and provides a counter-narrative to public media. The views expressed are those of Dr. Adams and do not reflect the views/opinions held by Advisory Services Network, LLC. Let's jump into the transcript. Alex Mihajlov: There you go. Well I'm really glad you joined us today because I am trying to find some rational voice in the latest national panic that is gripping this country and that is COVID-19 and everybody's screaming about it and talking about it and scared to death about it and afraid to talk to anybody and afraid to breathe near anybody. And so I was kind of hoping I'd get some rational thought out of you. The first question that I'm having a hard time finding out is how did this truly, how did this virus truly start? Do you have a good theory on that? Bob Adams: So you don't need theories, there's pretty good science to back up the beginning of the Wuhan China outbreak, there's a meat market there that sells animals that honestly are illegal to sell but are eaten anyway and they've tracked it back to that meat market and suspect a ground dwelling animal, looks a little bit like an Armadillo, as the animal vector for this particular virus. We tracked a lot of the covid viruses, there's seven of these corona viruses out there that we see six of them quite routinely and regularly. Similar to the over 400 flu viruses that are out there that we see annually and regularly this time of the year. So the Wuhan China, center of the outbreak has been tracked back to the first patient, and we're going to track its development and mutation over the years to come.
