When music journalist Myles Clarkson visits ailing piano virtuoso Duncan Ely at his palatial California home, ostensibly to interview the man, Duncan notices something distinct about Myles:  his hands – they're beautiful, the bone structure perfect for a concert pianist.  Myles, it turns out, is a Juilliard-trained musician whose career tanked after receiving some bad reviews.  Taking an interest in Myles, Duncan introduces him to his artist daughter Roxanne. Soon Myles has entered the pianist's inner circle, much to the chagrin of Myles' wife, Paula, who feels more than a tinge of jealousy at the attention being paid to her husband.  But things are about to take a turn for the uncanny.  Roxanne casts a plaster life mask of Myles, and with Duncan on his way out, Myles donates blood to help him.  While Myles is asleep, something happens, and when he awakes, he's changed.  It's almost as if he's someone else. His urge to live, to love, to play music, is revived, leaving Paula to wonder:  just what, or who, is inhabiting the body of the man she loves? You may have heard that the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops is meeting all month long in Rome. This is just the latest stage of the years-long Synod on Synodality, which included listening sessions in parishes and other Catholic ministry settings all over the world. Participants will be discussing issues connected to communion, participation and the mission of the church. One thing that makes this synod different from all the others that came before it is that this is the first time that laypeople – including women – are participating as voting members. And one of those laypeople is Julia Osęka, and she's today's guest. Julia is a physics and theology major at Saint Joseph's University, the Jesuit college in Philadelphia. Originally from a small town in Poland, the story of how Julia came to represent North America and young adults at the synod is an incredible one. Julia got involved in a synod initiative that united the Catholic universities and Newman centers from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, a collaborative effort that was unique in the country. From there, thanks to her deep faith, thoughtful disposition and ability to listen intently and generously, Julia was selected to participate in the continental stage of the synod, and then finally chosen to participate in Rome. Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked her what it was like to find out she was going to the synod, and how she's navigating missing a month's worth of classes. They also talked about her background and how she found herself at Saint Joe's in the first place. When you listen to the conversation, you'll be able to tell how impressive and faith-filled Julia is. It's so great that she's representing young adults, Jesuit higher ed and all of us from North America at the synod. Along with this episode, we are publishing an article by one of Julia's campus ministers at St. Joe's, Beth Ford McNamee. In the piece, Beth describes the synod process in Philadelphia that eventually led to Julia's participation in Rome. You can read that piece at Jesuits.org. As I've mentioned earlier, I'm currently working on a project called Higher Mind Training, and some people who listen to the podcasts have written in asking for some information about it, so I thought I would present an overview of some of its basics for you to consider. I'd like to start out by describing something that happened to me about four or five years ago. It was a very brief moment in time. The whole thing probably took only a few seconds, but it flipped a switch within my consciousness that went straight into the core of my being. It couldn't have begun in a more ordinary situation. I was at a train station, waiting to get on a commuter train into downtown Philadelphia. Let me give you a little background. I was doing some consulting work for a group that was trying to establish itself as an online entertainment company. I had put together a few consultants to work on the project - three talented professionals with lots of experience. As the momentum built, we began to have regular meetings at an office space in center city and we were generally meeting there about twice a week. I live on the outskirts of the city, almost in the suburbs, and the closest train to me stops at Overbrook Station, which is almost on the campus of Saint Joseph's University and many of the regular commuters seem to have something to do with Saint Joe's. After several weeks, I fell into a basic routine where I would get there about five minutes early and with about twenty other commuters, would board the train as soon as it arrived. It was only a 15-minute commute. It generally ran on schedule, but one morning, when I got to the station, to my surprise and a little consternation, I found out that for no apparent reason, the train was running ten minutes late. After another five minutes it was announced that it was now running twenty minutes. Everyone on the platform groaned and this changed things at the station because as time went by, there were probably about three or four times more commuters waiting for the train than usual. I, along with everyone else, started worrying about whether or not I would be able to get a seat on the train. Now I had all this time on my hands. I don't know about you, but whenever I'm in that kind of situation, my mind shifts into high gear, churning out thought after thought, just to kill the time. I started thinking about the consulting work I had taken on. Then about how this change in schedule was going to affect the rest of my day. Then the next thing I know I'm agitating about my golf swing and why am I having so much trouble learning this simple move that I was sure would be great for me. Then I started going over my finances and whether the juice would be worth the squeeze on this project, which was now developing a few side issues, and on and on and on, non-stop, never-ending, random mental wonderings. The Tibetan Zen practitioners have a term for this type of mental process – they call it the “Chain of Delusion” because it binds you to mental meanderings that are generally meaningless, or even worse. All the while, I was keeping my eye on the station clock, which was moving so slow, I thought it might have been broken. Anyway, it was finally announced that the train was nearby and everyone started gathering around the boarding area, which became mobbed with many more people than are usually there. Now, there is a basic routine you follow when the train stops. The first thing you have to do is let all the passengers out who are getting off at that stop. You stand as close as you can to the train entrance, while still giving them room, so that once they've all gotten off, you can rush on and try to grab a seat.  It isn't particularly rude; you're just jockeying for position. Finally, the train pulled up and we all moved in as close as we could, but still within acceptable limits. There were only a few cars, so we all knew that a lot of us would be standing up for the whole ride into town.  The train stopped and the door opened. But strangely, no one got off. Suddenly, one the conductors, a tall and sturdy looking man in uniform planted himself in the doorway. The paragon of authority, he just stood there staring at us with a rather solemn look on his face. Something seemed wrong. I was hoping there wasn't a problem with the train that might cause a further delay or even a cancellation.    Then he stepped back a little and a woman came and stood in the doorway. She was fashionably dressed, had light brown hair that was stylishly cut and seemed to be in her mid to late forties. From her professional appearance, I assumed that she was with the University in some manner. Maybe a professor or an administrator. And she was wearing light sunglasses. She just stood there, not moving, looking off into the distance. Then I could see the conductor take hold of her right hand and put something in it. Within another moment, we could all see what it was. It was a long, white walking stick and we all knew instantly that the woman was blind. The entire feeling on the platform was immediately transformed and the moment was incredibly powerful. We had all been taken out of our normal, everyday routines and suddenly placed into an entirely different world. And this world was filled with a quick shock, followed by tremendous humility and gratitude. It might have only lasted for a brief moment, but we all felt the unspoken truth of that moment. We had learned something profound in that split second and we all knew that we all knew.   The woman was as cool as can be. Using her walking cane, she carefully made her way down the train's steps, and walked away, looking like she had done it a million times. We all boarded the train, but it was in a most orderly and polite manner and I doubt if anyone minded that they had to stand up for the fifteen-minute ride into town. I know I didn't, because rather than running through my standard chain of delusion, my consciousness was filled with clarity as I reflected on what I had just been shown.  I don't who that woman was or what she was doing, but she was clearly a professional going about her business. It was nothing special, she was just getting on with another day in the life. And that's exactly what I was doing as well, but what a major difference - I could see and she could not. I had been given the incredible gift of sight, and Oh My God, what can you say about that feeling when you understand the absolute preciousness of the gift you've been given? So, this quick example highlights the very first part of Higher Mind Training – the first step is to simply begin to recognize how miraculous the gift of life is. Now, it's not all that easy to do because we each have a tendency to take all of it for granted, all day, every day. And sources from ancient wisdom all the way through to modern neuroscience tell us that having appreciation and gratitude in our hearts for the simple gift of life is the most powerful thing that we can do to begin to evolve our awareness so we can realize our highest potential as human beings. This evolution of consciousness is critical to our long-term happiness, but in our modern world, most of us don't see it that way. We're mainly hung up on solving our problems, which never seem to end. For me, it's almost a joke. As soon as I get one taken care of, five more pop-up. But what if the trick to achieving real happiness isn't to spend your whole life just trying to solve your problems, but it's to change the way we use our intelligence, which is what's causing 99% of our problems in the first place. In this regard, I'm going to leave you with two of my most favorite quotes about solving problems, and they're from two of the most respected authorities on human intelligence that our species has ever produced. The first on is from Albert Einstein who said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” And the second one is from the legendary psychologist, Carl Jung who said, “The greatest and most important problems in life can never be solved. They can only be outgrown.” So, two of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century tell us that it's absolutely critical for us to evolve and grow. Years have gone by since I came across these quotes and I'm still trying to let their wisdom sink into me. And here's one last idea to consider, which comes from Abraham Lincoln. But not Lincoln the great president, but Lincoln the great log splitter who once said, “If I was told I had four hours to cut down a tree, I'd spend the first three hours sharpening the axe.” Maybe it's a good idea for us to keep sharpening that old axe of our awareness. But the trick is knowing how to do it. Well, that's the end of this episode. Next, we're going to take a quick look at the two basic parts of our mind – our ordinary mind and the higher mind. As always, keep your eyes mind and hearts open, and let's get together in the next one.

If you want to see some really beautiful (and useful!) coronacharts, check out this set of graphs, tables, and maps from the Anchorage Daily News that Patron John shared with me. I am jealous of this person, “Kevin Powell,” who can make all of these wonderful visuals.Over in vaccine world, President Joe Biden, who I still sometimes forget is the president, said yesterday that we’d have enough doses for “every adult in America” by the end of May. That’s just three months away, and, like I’ve said before, abundant supply of vaccine really does change everything. We can go from anxiously refreshing websites and email clients, to strolling on down to our neighborhood pharmacy or grocery store. You may still get your vaccine at a massive clinic run by the national guard, but it won’t be your only option and it won’t feel like winning the lottery (which is a good thing!).Last week the Mayor announced the Richmond Equity Agenda, which “serves as a road map to recover the right way, outlining priorities for the next four years and beyond.” He’s also asked that residents—like you—weigh in on the Agenda by leaving comments on the actual text of the ordinance itself. You should definitely do this! Scrolling through the document, I see that the housing and transportation people have already made a first pass, but we still need folks passionate about health, wealth-building, education, climate, public safety, history, community engagement, and economic development to dig in. That’s a big list of topics, and surely most of the folks reading this email care about at least one of those things. Please take six minutes this morning, scroll through the topic sections, and leave at least two comments about how you’d like to see our City equitably addresses some of the challenges facing us.Ack! I forgot to link to this on Monday, but the YWCA has started their 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge. You might remember a similar thing from last year, but here’s the gist: Sign up and then each day, for 21 days, via email “you will be presented with activities such as reading an article, listening to a podcast, reflecting on personal experience and more. Participation in an activity like this helps us to discover how racial injustice and social injustice impact our community, to connect with one another, and to identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination.”Anah Johnson and Adam Lockett have a column in the Richmond Times-Dispatch about the City’s need to refocus on safer and expanded spaces for pedestrians—especially with budget season right around the corner. I deeply agree with this bit: “As the demands for more sustainable transportation infrastructure in the city and surrounding counties continue to grow louder, it would be an unfortunate and preventable injustice if the health and needs of the people once again were not prioritized. Richmonders should be able to go for a walk, hike or bike ride without a risk of respiratory illness or fatality from a vehicle.”VPM’s Ian Stewart has a picture of the newly-installed pedestrian hybrid beacon at Grove and Somerset Avenues! I think I might try to ride my bike out there today to check it out. New infrastructure road trip!!Trevor Dickerson at RVAHub writes about Photogrammar, a new project out of UR’s Digital Scholarship Lab. Be careful or you could lose your morning scrolling around on a map of over 170,000 photographs from life in America during the Great Depression and World War II.The Atlantic-10 men’s basketball tournament kicks off today in Richmond at the Siegel Center with first round games featuring La Salle, Saint Joe’s, George Washington, and Fordham. Tomorrow’s second round takes place in both the Siegel Center and the Robins Center. Then, on Sunday, the championship game will be played in Dayton, which is garbage. I mean the whole idea of having a basketball tournament right now is garbage, but having the entire tournament in Richmond except the final? Double garbage. Richmond starts their tournament play tomorrow at 11:00 AM and VCU will tip off on Friday at 3:30 PM. Sports! This morning’s longreadMars Is a HellholeI like reading things about why we shouldn’t deify Elon Musk. The influence Musk is having on a generation of people could not be more different. Musk has used the medium of dreaming and exploration to wrap up a package of entitlement, greed, and ego. He has no longing for scientific discovery, no desire to understand what makes Earth so different from Mars, how we all fit together and relate. Musk is no explorer; he is a flag planter. He seems to have missed one of the other lines from Pale Blue Dot: “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world.”If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.Picture of the DayJust one from my now enormous collection of matchbooks.

Jim Cuddihy with career advice ~ "I tell kids all the time, interns that come into my office, people who want to get into the business: 'When you wake up in the morning, you better want to go to work. Figure that out. Do something that you love.'" Jim Cuddihy - Executive Vice President MASN A Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town and we have a special, special delight to have a guest that has made such an impact on the greater Washington area at both Home Team Sports, Comcast SportsNet, and now with MASN. We'll get into that later, but right now I'm gonna say hello to Jimmy Cuddihy, the man from New York who took over Washington by storm. Jim Cuddihy: Great to be with you, Andy. One of my heroes since I moved here to D.C. in 2001. On Moving to Our Town A Ockershausen: I love your story. When you first arrived in the city, your wife and your two little children, at the time, got lost and ended up going by Georgetown Prep. Jim Cuddihy: You know, it's- A Ockershausen: The hated rival of Gonzaga Eagles at this point. Jim Cuddihy: Kind of ironic, right? My little guy's like five years old and we're looking for houses. This is the first time they've moved down; I'd already been here a couple months. And we see this beautiful campus and we pull in and there's a rugby game going on. I played, I had coached, I love the sport. A Ockershausen: It's your life. Jim Cuddihy: I take a picture with my son and the ball's half as big as him, right? And he goes to school, they do a father's day present where they do cardboard cutouts of tools. And he cuts out a saw and he puts the picture in there and he writes, "To the best dad I ever saw." A Ockershausen: He's five years old? Jim Cuddihy: And to this day, I still have that in my office and he turned out to be a fantastic rugby player, Gonzaga High School, and now the captain of Saint Joe's University rugby team. So it was ironic, that that young of an age, he- A Ockershausen: Jimmy, it is all do to his experience at Georgetown Prep. Jim Cuddihy: That's right. A Ockershausen: Prep- Jim Cuddihy: He wouldn't want to hear that. A Gonzaga guy wouldn't want to hear that, but you're right. A Ockershausen: But your career has been in broadcasting, but you grew up in New York City and I love hear you telling stories about the guy ... The guys you grew up with all became an important part of the city. Cops, firemen, workers, whatever they did, and you moved on. But you grew up in that atmosphere. On Growing Up in Stuyvesant Town, New York City Jim Cuddihy: Yeah. And those guys. . . And those guys are still my best friends. We grew up in a neighborhood ... Really one of the only communities in New York City called Stuyvesant Town. On the lower- A Ockershausen: I know it quite well. Jim Cuddihy: Yeah. It's on the Lower East Side from 14th Street and 1st Avenue to 23rd Street. A Ockershausen: High rise. Jim Cuddihy: High rises. And they built them in the 50s for the returning war veterans. A Ockershausen: Correct. I remember that. Jim Cuddihy: So this kind of neighborhood, you would run home from school, drop your book bag down, and you'd go right out and play until 6:00 or 6:30 until it was dark. And sometimes your mother would open up the window- A Ockershausen: Yeah. Parks and recreation on site, correct? Jim Cuddihy: We had 15 playgrounds and every playground had a specialty. A Ockershausen: Was that a project of an insurance company? Was that Metropolitan Life? Jim Cuddihy: Yeah. MetLife owned it, yeah. That's right. That's right. A Ockershausen: I know a lot about it because my brother-in-law was a firefighter. He was a fireman then. After the war, when he came back, there was no place to live. They lived out, someplace at Floyd Bennett Field. Jim Cuddihy: Yeah. Right. A Ockershausen: There's little Quonset huts out there. They couldn't find a place. Jim Cuddihy: Stuyvesant Town is rent controlled and my parents moved into a five-be...
