An important fishing village in Senegal is on the verge of disappearing as sea levels rise

The city of Saint-Louis, in northern Senegal, is grappling with a dire reality: rising sea levels. The former administrative capital of French West Africa, Saint-Louis sits between the Senegal River and the Atlantic Ocean. Its highest point stands just 13 feet above sea level, and it gets waves from both fresh and seawater that have become a growing threat. Fishing is one of the main industries in Saint-Louis. But the city's fishing village of Guet Ndar is now on the verge of disappearing.“We had to walk very far to reach the ocean, but now we have it right in front of our houses.”Cheikh Badiane, retired fisherman“Growing up, what we used to see is not what we're seeing today,” said Cheikh Badiane, a retired fisherman who grew up in the neighborhood and still lives there with his children and grandchildren. “We had to walk very far to reach the ocean, but now we have it right in front of our houses.” Several decades ago, Badiane recalled, the water was half a mile away.  Now, it washes up to the houses on the shore, sometimes seeping through the windows. In 2018, a high-tide event destroyed many houses, mosques and schools in Guet Ndar. About 1,500 people were forced to move to Diougop, a displacement camp funded by the United Nations that's 5 miles away inland. Most of them still live there. Back in 2018, a school was destroyed by a high-tide event on the coast of Saint-Louis, Senegal. Credit: Maria Elena Romero/The World All the tents at the camp look identical, with white walls, a blue roof and little plastic windows. There are a few trees and everything is surrounded by sand. “We are here, but that's not what we truly want. We really miss the beachside,” said Sailo Boufal, a mother who has lived in the camp with her kids for four years, after their house was destroyed. She said the relentless heat is the worst part of it.“We don't have electricity. We are already dead because of the heat, nobody can go in the tents before 10 p.m.” Sailo Boufal, a mother at the displacement camp who says she and her kids miss the beachside, lies down on the floor of a grocery shop where she works. Credit: Maria Elena Romero/The World Boufal said she doesn't see a future for her family at the camp, even if the government builds new houses for them. So, she said she's considering getting on a smuggling boat and trying to make it to the Canary Islands, in Spain, like many of her neighbors have already done. Cheik Badiane, a retired fisherman in the vibrant fishing village of Guet Ndar. Credit: Maria Elena Romero/The World And even though retired fisherman Badiane's house was not destroyed at the time, he and his neighbors have received notice from local authorities warning them that they might also have to relocate soon.Badiane said, though, that he's reluctant to leave.“We have decided to become a coalition and stand strong against the government who wants to take us away from here,” he said. “This is all we know, and all we have.”But Mandaw Gueye, director of the Regional Agency for Development in Saint-Louis, said that in the next few years, about 15,000 more fishermen and their families are expected to move into the area close to the Diougop camp.“Even if they don't want to,” he stressed. He said the government is building a more permanent housing solution there, and arranging to provide shuttle buses for fishermen to reach the coast. There are also plans to build a new sea wall, scheduled to be completed by 2050, after previous ones failed to prevent floodwaters from reaching the village. But that might be too late. It's estimated that in West Africa, over 40 million people in these lowest-lying zones, will be exposed to sea level rises by 2030 — less than a decade away. The sea walls that have been previously built have not been effective in preventing flooding and erosion. Credit: Maria Elena Romero/The World Natural barriers at riskSome of the biggest and fastest-growing cities in African countries are on the coasts and vulnerable to rising seas, said Mark Duerksen, a researcher with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, and an expert on urbanization on the continent.“It's an open question whether they will all survive and find strategies to host all the people who want to live and work along these bustling shorelines.” The Diougop camp, where some 1,500 people were displaced by sea level rise, is surrounded by sand. Credit: Maria Elena Romero/The World Frequent flooding, storms and coastal erosion are also destroying natural barriers like wetlands, coastal dunes and barrier islands, which create more vulnerability to sea level rise.“This is compounded in many African cities where there are relatively weak environmental protections and significant shortages of existing and affordable housing,” Duerksen added. The United Nations predicts that, over the next couple of decades, around 200 million people could be displaced as a result of flooding and shoreline erosion. The situation is particularly bad in West Africa, where a large percentage of the population lives on the Atlantic shore. Many young people in Saint-Louis have decided to leave for Europe by sea. "No Barca-Barsak" is a common phrase written on walls and ships in the fishing village of Guet Ndar. It roughly translates to “Don't go to Barcelona because you will end up in the cemetery.” Credit: Maria Elena Romero/The World An important cultural legacy that is also threatened by rising seas in Saint-Louis is the city center — a UNESCO World Heritage site, full of colorful architecture, where important jazz and dance festivals take place every year. It includes historical buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, which could all disappear with the rising waves.Local journalist Borso Tall contributed to this story.Related: Is it time for Senegal to end its romance with the French baguette?

Enquanto Rony, do Palmeiras, e Rodrygo, do Real Madrid, erraram o alvo. Ficha técnicaMarrocos 2 x Brasil 1Marrocos: Bono, Hakimi (Attyiat Allah), Saiss, Aguerd e Mazraoui; Amrabat, Ounahi (Sabiri) e El Khannouss (Louza); Ziyech, Boufal (Ezzalzouli) e En-Nesyri (Cheddira) Técnico: Walid Regragui.Brasil: Weverton, Emerson Royal, Éder Militão, Ibañez e Alex Telles; Casemiro e Andrey Santos (Raphael Veiga); Rony (Antony), Lucas Paquetá (Yuri Alberto), Vinicius Jr e Rodrygo (Vitor Roque).

Carl Lewis and football writer Zach Lowy discuss players to watch in Group F of the World Cup in Qatar. Group F contains two sides who enjoyed good 2018 World Cup campaigns in Belgium – who finished third – and Croatia, who were ultimately beaten finalists. Canada are making only their second World Cup appearance, while Morocco have qualified for their second World Cup in a row.   Belgium World ranking: 2 Coach: Roberto Martínez Confirmed 26-man squad:Koen Casteels (Wolfsburg), Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid), Simon Mignolet (Club Brugge), Toby Alderweireld (Royal Antwerp), Zeno Debast (Anderlecht), Leander Dendoncker (Wolves), Wout Faes (Leicester City), Arthur Theate (Stade Rennes), Jan Vertonghen (Anderlecht), Yannick Carrasco (Atletico Madrid), Timothy Castagne (Leicester City), Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Dortmund), Thomas Meunier (Borussia Dortmund), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Amadou Onana (Everton), Youri Tielemans (Leicester City), Hans Vanaken (Club Brugge), Axel Witsel (Atletico Madrid), Leandro Trossard (Brighton), Dries Mertens (Galatasaray), Lois Openda (Lens), Michy Batshuayi (Fenerbahce), Eden Hazard (Real Madrid), Jeremy Doku (Stade Rennes), Charles De Ketelaere (AC Milan), Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan) The Red Devils landed a cushy-looking draw as they look to better their third-place finish in 2018. Martinez has a number of young players coming through, Everton's Onana among them, but Belgium look set to retain an experienced first XI.   Canada World ranking: 41 Coach: John Herdman Confirmed 26-man squad: Milan Borjan (Red Star Belgrade), James Pantemis (CF Montreal), Dayne St. Clair (Minnesota United), Sam Adekugbe (Hatayspor), Derek Cornelius (Vancouver Whitecaps – Panetolikos), Alistair Johnston (CF Montreal), Richie Laryea (Nottingham Forest), Kamal Miller (CF Montreal), Steven Vitoria (Chaves), Joel Waterman (CF Montreal), Stephen Eustaquio (FC Porto), Liam Fraser (Deinze), Atiba Hutchinson (Besiktas), Mark-Anthony Kaye (Toronto FC), Ismael Kone (CF Montreal), Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC), Samuel Piette (CF Montreal), David Wotherspoon (St. Johnstone), Tajon Buchanan (Club Brugge), Lucas Cavallini (Vancouver Whitecaps), Jonathan David (Lille), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Junior Hoillett (Reading), Cyle Larin (Club Brugge), Liam Miller (FC Basel), Ike Ugbo (Troyes). Herdman's biggest concern, one of the things “keeping him awake at night”, was the fitness of captain Atiba Hutchinson, Canada's most-capped player, who missed the friendlies due to a bone bruise suffered in pre-season with Besiktas.   Croatia World ranking: 12 Coach: Zlatko Dalic Confirmed 26-man squad:Dominik Livakovic (Dinamo Zagreb), Ivica Ivusic (Osijek), Ivo Grbic (Atletico Madrid), Domagoj Vida (AEK Athens), Dejan Lovren (Zenit Saint Petersburg), Borna Barisic (Rangers), Josip Juranovic (Celtic), Josko Gvardiol (RB Leipzig), Borna Sosa (Stuttgart), Josip Stanisic (Bayern Munich), Martin Erlic (Sassuolo), Josip Sutalo (Dinamo Zagreb), Luka Modric (Real Madrid), Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea), Marcelo Brozovic (Inter Milan) Mario Pasalaic (Atalanta), Nikola Vlasic (Torino), Lovro Majer (Rennes), Kristijan Jakic (Eintracht Frankfurt), Luka Sucic (Red Bull Salzburg), Ivan Perisic (Tottenham), Andrej Kramaric (Hoffenheim), Bruno Petkovic (Dinamo Zagreb), Mislav Orsic (Dinamo Zagreb), Ante Budimir (Osasuna), Marko Livaja (Hajduk Split) Dalic is likely to pick a familiar-looking XI, with Modric, Kovacic, Brozovic, Perisic and Lovren all still key players for the 2018 runners-up. Kovacic and Perisic have been joined by Old Firm rivals Barisic and Juranovic as British-based representatives.   Morocco World ranking: 22 Coach: Walid Regragui Confirmed 26-man squad: Yassine Bounou (Sevilla), Munir El Kajoui (Al Wehda), Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti (Wydad Casablanca), Achraf Hakimi (PSG), Noussair Mazraoui (Bayern Munich), Nayef Aguerd (West Ham), Romain Saiss (Besiktas), Achraf Dari (Brest), Badr Benoun (Qatar SC), Yahia Attiyat Allah (Wydad Casablanca), Jawad El Yamiq (Real Valladolid), Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina), Azzedine Ounahi (Angers), Belil El Khanouss (Genk), Abdelhamid Sabiri (Sampdoria), Ilias Chair (QPR), Selim Amallah (Standard Liege), Yahya Jabrane (Wydad Casablanca), Amine Harit (Marseille), Hakim Ziyech (Chelsea), Zakaria Aboukhlal (Toulouse), Walid Cheddira (Bari), Sofiane Boufal (Angers), Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla), Abde Ezzalzouli (Osasuna), Abderrazak Hamdallah (Al-Ittihad) The second-best team in Africa, according to FIFA rankings, will face two of 2018 semi-finalists in Qatar. Morocco look strong in the full-back areas, with Mazraoui and Hakimi, while Regragui has plenty of options up front to supplement a forward line likely to consist of Ziyech, Boufal and En-Nesyri.

Burnley came to St. Mary’s and brought with them the weather and a bit of misery as Saints’ fans fought the wind and rain to watch what amounted to a very forgettable match. Other than Danny Ings scoring again (to make it 18 in all comps this year and 15 in the PL), nothing good happened. Redmond was injured in training, Boufal went off early, we let in a goal directly from a corner and had all kinds of possession but no real chances. Burnley had a higher Xg than we did, and even Carl Anka will tell you that’s not supposed to happen.  Anyway, Dan was kind enough to join me to fill me in on all that he and his father have been up to recently. From doing the 92 to being interviewed by the Guardian and raising money for a couple of local charities along the way. Host Ricky Sacks was joined by Lee McQueen along with Richard White MBE and Jamie Weir from Sky Sports as we reviewed the FA Cup draw against Southampton. Sofiane Boufal's late equaliser gave Southampton a fully-deserved FA Cup fourth-round replay against Tottenham after an entertaining encounter. Saints' manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and Spurs counterpart Jose Mourinho made FA Cup statements of intent by selecting strong line-ups - and their teams delivered a game high on quality, chances and passion. Spurs looked on their way into the fifth round just before the hour, when Son Heung-min crowned a superb break with a low finish from the excellent Giovani lo Celso's pass. Southampton, however, had a succession of chances to equalise, with man of the moment Danny Ings having a rare off day in front of goal and squandering several opportunities. Ings never let his head drop for a second and his tireless approach was rewarded when he set up Boufal for a thumping finish high past Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris with three minutes left. We also discussed Steven Bergwijn still expecting to complete a transfer worth around €30M to Spurs during the upcoming week despite the commotion around his PSV departure. #THFC #COYS #TOTTENHAMHOTSPUR #TOTTENHAM#HOTSPUR #SPURS #LWOS

Timeline:  Intro- 2:10 William joins the show- Welcome and Film Talk- 7:27 Saints Talk- 38:20 Outro- 1:14:45 Saints failed, for the 4th time running, to avoid a loss at St.Mary’s. It wasn’t 0-9 this time, but in all honesty, it wasn’t that much better. After going down early Saints simply meandered, seemingly directionless and without much passion, towards halftime. Saints started with a back 3. The same back 3 that stood so firmly for so long against Manchester City just a week ago, but by allowing the early goal, and with Stuart Armstrong stuck in as a Right Wing-Back, it was all going wrong for Saints. Halftime brought changes and the Boufal created Saints first shot just moments after coming on. He then provided the assist for Danny Ings. After that, Saints settled back into the all-to-familiar and slowly let the game slip away from them. Richarlison eventually gave the visitors the lead, and Everton secured their first away win of the season. The result has left Saints in the relegation zone and Saints fans particularly flummoxed. That’s the context for this week’s show. Another poor performance, another relegation fight, another match where the players seem to be coasting, another season where the manager doesn’t seem to know his best side. It’s crushing to all of us, and it definitely makes doing things like this show harder. This week, though, I’m joined by a familiar voice. Not to this show, but around the Saints FC community. He’s appeared on the Saints FC Podcast, The Ugly Inside, on this week’s Total Saints Podcast and here. He writes and talks he gardens and he’s all around just pretty great. We spend a lot of this week talking about his new film, The Name, written by William and shot in a single day in three locations in England. It’s a lot of fun and well worth 20 minutes of your time. William and his team have more coming and we discuss that as well. We discuss pretty much everything because I did not want to talk about the match, but we eventually did.
