"Nathan Jones: Southampton permitted to speak to Luton Town boss after sacking Ralph Hasenhuttl Southampton have been given permission to speak to Luton Town boss Nathan Jones about their managerial vacancy after sacking Ralph Hasenhuttl. Hasenhuttl left the club earlier on Monday in the wake of the Saints' 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle. Southampton have won just one of their past nine matches and are in the Premier League relegation zone. Luton will allow the club to speak to Jones after their Championship match at Stoke City on Tuesday. Visit our Southampton page for all the latest Saints news, analysis and fan views You can now get Southampton news notifications in the BBC Sport app - find out more ""We would like to place on record that the Premier League club have approached the board in the correct manner, for which we are grateful, and that the whole situation is extremely amicable with Southampton and with Nathan,"" said the Hatters, who are eighth in the Championship table. ""We would also like to urge all supporters travelling to Stoke to show him and the team your support on what we hope will be yet another memorable away day."" Former Brighton and Yeovil player Jones is in his second spell as Luton manager, having taken the club from League Two to League One in his first three-year tenure between 2016-19. In 2019, with Luton on course for promotion to the Championship, he replaced Gary Rowett as Stoke boss, but returned to the Hatters 18 months later. ADVERTISEMENT First team coach Ruben Selles will take charge of Southampton for Wednesday's Carabao Cup third round home game against League One side Sheffield Wednesday. Hasenhuttl, who was appointed in December 2018, is the fifth Premier League manager to be sacked so far this season. Scott Parker, Bruno Lage, Thomas Tuchel and Steven Gerrard were dismissed by Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, while Graham Potter left Brighton to take over as Chelsea boss. Analysis Former Southampton defender Francis Benali on BBC Radio 5 Live Clearly Nathan Jones is in a good position to be the next Southampton manager. But it could be that things don't work out and it doesn't actually happen for whatever reason. There are a number of managers who will look at this job as a great opportunity - a young group of players, potential to spend in the January window and it's a Premier League job. It's not just Nathan Jones who will be interested in Southampton - there are a lot of managers who will be champing at the bit to have this position. The World Cup break could help clubs like Southampton. Making this decision [to sack Hasenhuttl] gives the new manager, whoever it is going to be, the opportunity to work with this exciting new, young squad. It´s been a while, but PodSaveTheBall is back! Ralf Rangnick has been appointed interim manager for Manchester United in an effort to rebuild and steer the club in a new direction. In this chat with my son Markus as the designated interviewer, we attempt to address some of the biggest questions tied to this spectacular appointment. Who is Ralf Rangnick, and why is he held in such high regard in Germany and by the likes of Klopp, Tuchel and Hasenhuttl? What does it say about the direction Manchester United is going in: is Pochettino less likely? What will their transfer policy look like? What will happen to Ronaldo? And will he take the job permanently if given the chance?
Ralph Hasenhuttl could be close to losing his job at Southampton according to a recent report. Saints are struggling, but is it a surprise? (Part 2, 13:27) Raheem Sterling has hinted he may be open to a new challenge abroad, away from the Premier League. (Part 3, 26:25) Liverpool allegedly were interested in Leeds' Raphinha this summer.

Slightly later than scheduled this week the Whistleblowers trident return to look forwards rather than cast their eyes back over the prior weekend, which is of some relief to those not wanting to remember Spurs’ tepid attempts at winning a trophy again. Instead we look to Liverpool’s do-or-die potential Champions League place decider against Manchester United and ask whether a United fan would rather win the Europa League or watch Liverpool have to compete in it themselves next year. Thoughts then turn to whether City and Chelsea can fulfil their Champions League ambitions following positive midweek results and why on earth Chelsea’s policy of dumping managers at the drop of the hat manages to provide continually good results. Throw in a soupçon of summer movement chat involving Haaland, Hasenhüttl, Brendan Rodgers and Kane, and it really is an informative, action packed and insightful episode of the Whistleblowers. As the Premier League almost ceremoniously take the time to react to another Chelsea manager losing their job, Arsenal creep slowly up the table. Arsenal struggled to find the back of the net earlier in the season but Arteta has improved the team’s creativity by harnessing the fearlessness and hunger of the Arsenal youth in place of the seasoned and more expensive players in the Arsenal squad. Southampton have generally performed exceptionally since Hasenhuttl took over and sit high in the table. Both have been in good form recently, but this was a test for both given the mid-week fixture congestion. It was fascinating to see how each team adapted the team to deal with these demands and the questions posed by their opponents.Enjoy! Newcastle United's loss to Sheffield United has brought even more pressure onto Steve Bruce, but is he, in fact, doing exactly what he is being asked, keep the club in the Premier League? We discuss Newcastle and the position they find themselves in currently, who is truly responsible for the situation they are in and is this a never-ending cycle until Mike Ashely finally sells the club? A huge win for Everton this week leads us into a debate about Alex Iwobi's recent form and comparisons drawn between Nicolas Pepe and Wilfred Zaha bring up the question of Arsenal and the state of the club's financial dealing yet again. Speaking of finances, we spend a lot of time on this show preaching that every club spends money, well we've got the information at hand and there are some shocking outcomes! We also discuss the difference between being a manager and a head coach, the relationship between a manager and a sporting director, the Salford city documentary, the fallout from Spurs vs Fulham and much much more! See how you can get involved at kickitout.org. It’s not everyday Saints knock off Liverpool in the League. In fact, it’s not even every year or every other. In fact, it hadn’t happened since a 3-2 come from behind win under Ronal Koeman’s watch. There were a number of reasons Saints should not have won on Monday night, but none of them matter. The squad depth, the injuries, illnesses, and other calamities that reduced the squad to what it was, Hasenhuttl’s record against Klopp. But, none of those mattered. Saints took 3 points from the defending champions and current league leaders, shooting themselves to 6th in the table, and putting in a performance that brought the big man to tears. Joining me this week to discuss the match and address your questions is Prost International’s, Jacob Tanswell. Jacob is a longtime Saints fan and journalist and it was a real pleasure to have him on the show. Because of the Monday night fixture we spoke on two occasions. During part 1 we looked at listener questions and discuss the disappointing end to Saints 2020 calendar year, and in part 2 we look back at Saints 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Monday night.
Run down - Preamble Champions League recap and the weirdness of COVID-19 Football. And players are human! Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea. Both teams in their own minor crisis. Both focusing on defense. West Ham 1-1 Manchester City. Typical City is getting redefined as an insipid performance where we City have the ball forever... Liverpool 2-1 Sheffield United. Narrative is driving me nuts. Liverpool match was treated as heroic. For fucks sake. Arsenal 0-1 Leicester. Gunners huffed and puffed but couldn't break a resolute Foxes who had Vardy on the bench. Weirdly Auba was on the wrong side? Burnley 0-1 Tottenham Hotspur. Looked like a shithouse masterclass from Burnley, they were winning the longball battle and picking up second balls. Southampton 2-0 Everton. The Hasenhuttl heads were all over this. Big performance from the Saints and Everton missed Richarlison. Aston Villa 0-3 Leeds United Leeds DOMINANT. Bamford the story. Had two clear cut chances. Leeds fans moan... same old Bamford. Fulham 1-2 Crystal Palace. Fulham are bad and are going down. This was a Zaha game, scored 2 more goals. Wolverhampton Wolves 1-1 Newcastle United Ugh. Do I have to? Bad draw for Wolves. Brighton and Hove Albion 1-1 West Bromwich Albion These are games the Seagulls HAVE TO HAVE. Warning: the only thing longer than this episode is the time it takes for Vestergaard to turn and try to cover a right-winger bursting down the channel… I hope you enjoy it. Saints secured their third successive away win (and our 3rd league match with one team ending the match with only 10 players on the pitch), away at Bramall Lane on Saturday. The game had it all. It was open, entertaining, and almost nobody would have thought it would finish with only a single goal. Djenepo went from wayward left wing-back to Malian Messi in the space of 1 change of formation, and gave us all a moment we won’t forget when he gave a kid in the crowd his shirt after the match, producing one of the most passionate fist shakes since my mom caught my brother and I blowing up lemons with firecrackers (like 2 years ago). The in-game management from Hasenhuttl was brilliant. The starting lineup, maybe not so much. Trying to put the game in perspective was difficult for me. I was so enthralled with the contest that I was afraid I missed some critical points of the match. Luckily, I had Lucy Highnett on the show to join me. First clean sheet of the season. First goal for Djenepo. A debut for Danso. A back post tap in for Redmond. An assist for Boufal and a win for Hasenhuttl. Saints made difficult work against 10 man Brighton on Saturday. But, at the end of the day, a win is a win and 3 points on the road is nothing to sneeze at. Joining me to discuss the match, the arrival of the new opposition video analyst/assistant coach, Forster’s return to Celtic and more, is Ben Hernandez-Stroud of the Archers Road End. Ben is on Twitter @archersroadend as well as on Instagram and Facebook. Ben is currently taking a break from writing the blog, but when he comes back, you’ll want to make sure you are in touch with the blog. Until then, Twitter will have to suffice. What a fantastic start to the week. Before I was even awake on Monday morning, Saints had taken care of some serious business in the transfer market, bringing in Che Adams from Birmingham and shipping Matt Targett off to Aston Villa. Not long after that, Danny Ings was officially announced as a Saint after his loan spell from LFC ended. That makes two signings under Hasenhuttl and two attacking options added to the team. It’s also the first major departure of Ralph’s tenure. Targett played a significant role last season when Bertrand was out, but was going to be short of the first team football he craves and was coveted by several clubs according to rumors on the internet (where everything is true). Joining my this week to discuss all the movement, on and off the pitch, is Jay of @southamptonpage (Instagram). From Adams to Targett to the backroom shuffle, and social media mishaps, we break down what’s going on at Saints. If you don’t follow the @southamptonpage (Twitter), go do that. We’ll be back with a newsletter on Friday. Alex and Rebecca are back for an extended podcast to chat about some major finals and take a closer look at the seasons for some of the clubs outside of the Premier League top six. Manchester City destroyed Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup Final to secure the domestic treble / quadruple - it was pure dominance and an impressive performance but we ask whether this is a worrying portent of things to come, if Man City are "sportswashing", and how much Vincent Kompany leaving may affect them. We also look back at Watford's season as a whole, as well as delving into the likes of Wolves, Burnley, Newcastle, Southampton, Everton and Crystal Palace. How will Wolves get on in the Europa League? Will Rafa Benitez get money to spend in the summer? How much has Hasenhuttl improved Southampton? Can Everton push for top six next season? We delve into Lyon's dominance of women's football as they claimed their fourth consecutive Champions League title - as well as some of the sexist responses to their achievement, to Ada Hegerberg's performance, and to reports of Emma Hayes being in the frame to manage Chelsea's men's team. Plus, a closer look at Fulham's recruitment policy, Allegri leaving Juventus, and UEFA setting a new low as Mkhitaryan confirms he won't play in the Europa League final for safety reasons. **Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts, as it makes it easier for other potential listeners to find us. In this @EPLRoundTable segment we speak with @MrSamECox about Southampton's season on the whole, the high and low points, the Player and Young Player of the year, the best goal scored at the club, if Hasenhuttl will be able to restore Saints' identity, positions that need to be filled in the summer, potential outgoings, and what to expect for 2019/20 and beyond. The 2018/2019 Premier League season is over. A 16th place finish, some wins against the top 6, 29 points dropped from winning positions (if my counting is correct), a new coach, a load of players out on loan, 2 executive openings, and a second place trophy for LFC. Was it successful? I’m not sure I’d call it that, but it’s definitely on something to build on. This week I’m joined Jay Grant (@fataljaay), who owns the partner account to the show, @southamptonpage. Because he was at the match on Sunday, and Sunday was also Mother’s Day here in the US, we recorded on Monday morning, shortly after the club announced the new main sponsorship deal with LD Sports (so that’s fun). We also discuss Saints’ 1-1 draw with Huddersfield on the final day of the season, the looming transfer window and more. Natalie Sawyer and Gab Marcotti are joined by Matt Dickinson and Bill Edgar after another Premier League weekend where the top two were victorious. We look at the run-ins of Liverpool and Manchester City for any potential slip-ups. Will Rafa Benitez have something to say about the destination of the title? With City and Liverpool continuing to rack up the points, is this title race good for the Premier League or does it show the disparity between the haves and the have-nots?Ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second legs, we try to second-guess Pep and to make any kind of argument for a Manchester United victory in Barcelona. And elsewhere this weekend, is Hasenhuttl heading for greater things? Plus Andre Gomes – handsome but horrible. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It’s game day as Liverpool look to go back to the top with victory at Southampton. And given the Saints are fifth from bottom and still in danger of being relegated, you would not back against the relentless Reds from doing just that. But the Saints have been transformed under their new manager – and Jurgen Klopp’s big friend – Ralph Hasenhuttl and they will go into tonight’s game as one of the top-five performing Premier League teams in the calendar year. And, if that wasn’t warning enough, the special guest of this podcast explains why Southampton will be particularly fired up this evening. Adam Leitch is the chief sports writer for the Southern Daily Echo and he speaks to Paul Wheelock about the Hasenhuttl revolution, the Austrian’s similarities with Klopp, the fitness and form of Danny Ings, the return of Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk to St Mary's, and where the game could be won and lost. Enjoy – and fingers crossed. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Spurs stole our song, got (most of) the calls from our most recent enemy referee, and controlled the first half. But, we took all three points in a dramatic and impressive second half display. We did it with no striker on the pitch, relying on a teenage right back to crash the back post and poke home the equalizer before JWP beat the World Cup winning goalkeeper from a dead ball. It was truly a rollercoaster of emotions, but it was so nice to finish on a high. So often we’ve conceded late and lost some of the momentum or (more importantly after 38 weeks) the points. This week, though, we turned it around and we now walk into the three week break with our heads held high. Joining me to breakdown the match, JWP’s right foot, Josh Sims face, and Hasenhuttl’s adjustments is Rob Maddox. Rob is a photographer, sport enthusiast, and Saints fan from Bath. In addition to analyzing the match, we discuss how Rob became a fan of the team, his photography process, some memorable moments from his time supporting Saints and more. Just sign up here if you’d like to give it a try. _________________________________________________________ All things considered, this week was a good week. Saints took three points from Fulham, pulled themselves out of the drop zone, and pushed one of the hottest teams in the league to the brink away from home, and were unlucky not to come away with at least a point. The goals, the grit, a bit of glamour, and some questionable refereeing, and you basically have the week in a nutshell. Joining me this week to talk about his coaching journey, his love of Saints, and the match against United (we did the Fulham match during the week for Patreon members) is Jody Rovers. Jody is the director of coaches at Matt Le Tissier Natural Coaching (Web, Twitter) as well as his newest coaching venture, Jody Rivers Coaching. Jody’s passion for youth and the sport of football are undeniable, and I really enjoyed getting to hear his perspective on football, coaching, and the turnaround in the team since Hasenhuttl took over. I hope you enjoy the episode and give Jody a follow on Twitter @riversjodycoach. Adam Smith is joined by both Dion Dublin and Matt Le Tissier to discuss the latest talking points from the football world including whether Liverpool can continue to sustain their title challenge. Manchester United have made their worst start to a season since 1990 so the panel are asked what needs to change? Ralph Hasenhuttl secured Southampton's first home win of the season by ending Arsenal's unbeaten run but is this a turning point for Saints?

There's also a lot of talk about the state of Man Utd with the return of the Mourinho-ometer, as well as a closer look at the Champions League and Europa League draws.
