If you're a teacher, you're a dendrite grower, according to today's guest Dr. Marcia Tate. Growing dendrites is a piece of brain science Dr. Tate shares in many of her books and workshops to help educators understand the context of brain-based teaching and learning. Dr. Tate talks with 3Ps host Josh about how, after years working as a teacher and an administrator, she learned about the brain science behind teaching and wanted to share that understanding with others. She has now been in education 49 years and has taught about half of million people as an educational consultant. Along with other tips and snippets about brain-based teaching, Dr. Tate shares a few of her favorite strategies, including incorporating movement and music, into the classroom. Josh also invites Dr. Tate to share about her most recent book, Happy Teachers, Happy Classrooms, which she wrote during the COVID-19 pandemic. This book addresses how to avoid burnout and increase teacher health and wellness. Dr. Tate has been facilitating the Arizona K12 Center's events for beginning teachers through this school year and will also be the lead facilitator at this summer's Beginning Teacher Institute. In this episode, Shellee and Deanna discuss: How brain-based learning can help your child learn mathLearning math through other areas of lifePutting together a village of support for your children Key Takeaways: Math can be learned more effectively with brain-based learning, which uses cognitive science to identify how each student learns best. Nothing beats the experience of learning math from experts who make you feel engaged and empowered.Students sometimes struggle with math, not because they lack the ability to grasp it, but because they are not willing to do the gymnastics of thinking. Engage them in other areas where they aren't always excelling, it strengthens their capacity to think, solve problems, and strive to be better.Make sure your children have a village of support around them; when they are supported, they feel more inclined to learn things and gain confidence. “If you don't tap into the student's full potential and keep them engaged, they can lose those games because they lose that interest and motivation to really maximize their potential.” — Deanna Hurn About Deanna Hurn: Deanna is an educational consultant, thought leader, credentialed teacher, and CEO and founder of the Miracle Math Coaching Brain-Based Learning Center in Fairfield, California. She combines neuroscience, psychology, mathematics, statistics, and cognitive science to equip students with their unique code for learning. You know those things you’ve heard that seem true? I mean, they sound plausible. Plus, if enough people say it, it must be true, right? Before long, we find ourselves buying into the hype, retelling the story, believing something we’ve heard without stopping to ask questions. This is how myths begin.Sometimes, there’s simply a lack of information—nothing to disprove this theory or that idea. Other times, they sound good on paper but are only surface-level with no substance to back them up.Whatever the case may be, we’ve all encountered myths (big and small) in various parts of our lives. But have you ever stopped to think about myths related to teaching and learning? What stories are being told out there that affect our work and how we approach things? What’s being shared as fact when there isn’t research to back it up?It's time to debunk five teaching-and-learning-related myths you may have heard before. For show notes, click here.Resources mentioned:*Disclosure: I get commissions for purchases made through some of these links.Democracy and Education (John Dewey)The Art of Music Teaching & Learning — A comprehensive online course for music educators in all types of settings. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, episode #79 with Eric Jensen, a leading authority on the science and applications of brain research in education for more than 20 years. Watch the interview on YouTube here. For those who are new here, my name is Andrea Samadi, I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience and educational research, matched with social and emotional skills, with interviews from experts who have risen to the top of their field with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, to take your results to the next level.Thank you so much Eric, for coming on this podcast today. Where have I reached you?Just to give some background of Eric Jensen and his work:Dr. Eric Jensen is a former teacher and Top 30 Global Guru. He co-founded an academic enrichment program, held in 16 countries with over 85,000 graduates. Jensen has authored over 30 books[i] including 3 bestsellers with his 2 most recent being Brain-Based Learning (in its 3rd edition)[ii] and Poor Students Rich Teaching[iii]. He is also member of the invitation-only Society for Neuroscience.[iv]Eric, I know that your background has been focused around students and poverty, and how poverty impacts the brain and learning, specifically as it relates to trauma and stress. While our stress levels seem to keep jumping up to new levels each month as new stressors arise, we’ve got it handled here, as we have both parents working together with our children. I can’t help but think of those families who don’t have the resources or support that they need and would like to hear your thoughts of solutions that teachers and families could be looking at to better support students at this critical time in our world.Q1: Can we start off with a brief overview of what stress does to the brain, specifically when we are trying to learn (if we are a student) or complete our work (if we are in the corporate space) as well as to think about the dangers of emotion contagion. What can we do these days to prevent stress from wreaking havoc on our lives, and improve our resiliency with a mind/body integration?Q2: Right now, it’s such an odd time in the world with this global pandemic, but this podcast audience reaches into over 110 countries, and I know that the tips you have for us in the US, will be relevant to those around the world. Can we talk about the topic that I know you focused on with your doctoral dissertation, the fact that 1/5 children grow up in poverty? How does poverty impact a child’s brain?Q3: I mentioned in the beginning, that many children are preparing to go back to school (at least virtually in my State) this week, and I did just interview authors Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey on their book about Distance Learning which provided some great suggestions for transitioning to 100% online learning. I still can’t help thinking of low-income families, and how they are coping. Our stress levels are high here as we are adapting to our new schedules, creating new workspaces, (suddenly we realized I need to buy 2 new desks with chairs) new routines, and expectations. What support or words of encouragement would you have for teachers serving low income students who might not have everything they need and their parents as we transition back to school virtually?Q4: How does exposure to stressors in the home (that we’ve heard of from children with ACES—Adverse Childhood Experiences) influence a child’s working memory? What strategies do you have to teach students with poverty in mind to help students with impulse regulation, visual/spatial skills, language skills, cognitive skills, social and emotional skills and conflict resolution?Q5: I heard you say that “our DNA is not our destiny” and I just loved hearing this because we don’t choose our parents. Next week I’m speaking with the Founder of the 16 Strong Project, created out of Harvard’s Grad School of Education to show other young people that ACES can be mitigated. In your 20 years of working with schools, and students, with a focus on low income students, what success stories have you seen where students were able to change their brains for the better? How do you think they did this?Q6: What are your final thoughts, or advice to teachers who are looking for new strategies to engage students in effective teaching this fall and upcoming year?Thank you so much Eric, for taking the time to speak with me. If anyone wants to learn more about your books, and programs/workshops for schools, they can go to https://www.jensenlearning.com/ or find you @EricJensenBrain on Twitter. The human brain provides several natural methods that, when used well, can create high motivation, interest, and diligent learning. These include a child’s inherited learning style, brain functions children are born with, and several natural learning methods—such as logic, problem solving, creativity, etc. Teach these to your children, and help them progress toward mastering their own minds.

Most people think being an entrepreneur means you’ll be the boss, taking control and choosing when and how much you want to work. In reality, being an entrepreneur can be one of the most difficult tasks in the beginning. It’s far easier to just work a traditional J.O.B. As you start your own business, it feels like you’re doing everything. Then as you figure it out, you can start to pass your duties on to other people. It takes time. The success of a company takes a lot of time, but unlike a traditional J.O.B. being an entrepreneur has no limit to your success or your salary. If you have the dedication to stick through all of the setbacks you’ll hit a point where you can’t ever imagine working for someone else again. On that note, the biggest mistake I’ve seen people do is give up. Generally, when you feel like you’re about to give up that’s right when success is around the corner. You need to keep pushing past that point, and trust that it will happen. To discuss this more I brought on a very special guest today, Dave Farrow. Dave Farrow is the Guinness World Record Holder for Greatest Memory - he memorized the exact order of 59 packs of shuffled playing cards and recalled them with only one card error - that's 3068 cards! Dave began his career as a failing ADHD and Dyslexic student in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Ready to drop out, Dave went to the library to learn everything he could about memory, to improve his grades and graduate. While still in high school, Dave began teaching memory improvement techniques to other students and teachers and they all loved it. In 1996, Dave Farrow earned the Guinness Record for Greatest Memory by memorizing and recalling the order of 52 decks of shuffled playing cards (2704 cards). In 2007, he broke his own record by memorizing and recalling the order of 59 decks of shuffled playing cards (3068 cards). Today, Dave Farrow is a successful speaker, author and entrepreneur. His Farrow Method for Memory Improvement and Brain Based Learning is the top learning program of it's kind in the world. Dave and the Farrow Method have been featured on over 2000 interviews on TV, Radio and in print publications. Download this episode today and learn what it takes to find your own world record.

In the last episode, Julie started breaking down some research on brain-based learning, or the science behind what it looks like to be a good learner. Today, we’re going to dig into the rest of that research so that we have a holistic understanding of how our children learn! When Julie started learning about home education, she read a lot of work by home educators. Of course this makes sense because she wanted to understand the philosophy behind home education. However, learning the philosophy didn’t teach her to understand how learning functions inside a person’s brain. So much of educational training is focused on organizational skills, but it’s also important to understand what’s happening inside our children's’ noggins! Eric Jensen is a former teacher with a PhD in Human Development from Fielding Graduate University. In 1981, he co-founded "the United States' first and largest brain-compatible learning program"[1], and he has been the head of Jensen Learning, a company that trains teachers what he calls "brain-friendly" or "brain-compatible" teaching and learning principles, since 1995. Brain-Based Learning is one of the first books that I read as I was getting into finding out more about education research several years ago. I am quite disappointed with this book. It's not very good. The problems with it are numerous. Firstly, it does not appear to have any central guiding principles. Generally, a good book will give you ideas in the form of kernels which will be applicable in many situations, and it will show you how those central ideas operate so that you can understand their power and generality. In Brain-Based Learning, Jensen sets out what he wants to tell the reader as essentially a list. This makes it difficult to make head or tail of the book as a whole. Secondly, there is a pervasive lack of references. This means that most of his assertions are stated just as bare-faced facts (with occasional "research has shown..." + random fact, which no reference), meaning that we are supposed to just take him on his word. In some cases, his references are highly dubious, such as when he cites a video produced by Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) inventor Richard Bandler as the only source for over a page of information and suggestions. NLP is generally understood by psychologists to have little scientific support (what science there is on it tends to show that it doesn't work), so this is obviously somewhat dubious. Thirdly, most of his suggestions are obvious in the first place. When he suggests that children need good nutrition or that people need to be hydrated, who is he arguing against? Who didn't think that, or was unaware of that, in the first place? There is a sense in which he is using the idea that his approaches are "brain-based" to lend extra authority to his statements, but the statements themselves were often already well-known and widely accepted approaches prior to his advocacy for them. There are many more criticisms that can be made of this book, and I do make them in the audio. I end up doing a mixture of pulling out the occasional interesting idea, enriching what he writes with context that actually makes it make sense, and pointing out the many places where his work is not useful, or is just confusing. I hope that, despite the rather negative nature of this episode, you will still find it worth listening to. Enjoy the episode. This is the second part of the episode about Brain-Based Learning. In the previous part, I discussed the chapters concerning relative lateralisation (left/right hemispheres), rhythms (such as circadian rhythms), gender, physical activity, stress and threat, and the senses (vision, touch, taste, smell, and sound). In this episode we look at the chapters on emotions, teacher communication, motivation, attention, teaching how to think, memory, meaning making, and enriching the brain. Enjoy the episode. If you think the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is about sex and a fall from grace, then Glynda-Lee Hoffmann's new book The Genesis Code: Your Key to Unlocking Hidden Genius will be a revelation! She believes that the primary story of Genesis is really a coded key to the workings of the human brain. Her research illuminates the give-and-take, balance and wholeness of nature and how that is played out physically in the brain. It's the mechanism behind our mental capacity and a clue to the realization that we can indeed access our greater abilities by recognizing and tapping our "hidden genius."
Susun Weed answers herbal health questions followed by a 30 minute interview with Glynda-Lee Hoffmann. As a young child in a turbulent home Glynda-Lee Hoffmann had a series of mystical experiences that fueled her desire to understand, to pursue truth in a way that others did not, to see things that others never perceived and look at things with a discerning and inquiring mind that yearned to touch a cosmic awareness that brought peace, serenity and wholeness. She also realized this information represented a revelation that pertains to the human brain that was historically understood and experienced by Abraham, Moses, Jesus and others.Glenda has written a groundbreaking book The Genesis Code: Your Key to Unlocking Hidden Genius. this episode- Q&A includes: • bioidentical hormones put your health at risk • explanation of heroic, scientific and wisewoman traditions • life is bumpy and gritty- no normal person- nourish whole unique person • cysts and possibilty of unexpressed emotions.. • red clover blossom for infusions not redclover leaf • solar keratosis?
