Do you prefer multistory episodes, single story episodes, or a mix? Let us know! In this episode of Discover Daily, Sienna dives into the fascinating world of the Method of Loci, an ancient memory technique that's making a comeback in the digital age. The Method of Loci, also known as the memory palace technique, involves visualizing a familiar location in your mind and mentally placing the items you want to remember along a path through that space. By retracing your imaginary steps, you can easily recall the information in the order you placed it.Sienna explores the science behind this technique, revealing how it takes advantage of our brain's natural ability to remember spatial information and transforms abstract data into vivid, location-based images. She shares studies that demonstrate the method's effectiveness in improving both short-term and long-term memory, and discusses its wide-ranging applications, from students memorizing complex academic material to memory champions recalling thousands of digits of pi.While the Method of Loci has been around for centuries, Sienna highlights its relevance in the modern world. She shares creative ways to adapt this technique for various subjects and learning scenarios, from creating subject-specific memory palaces to using virtual reality to build immersive memory spaces. Sienna also discusses the importance of training our natural memory abilities in an age where information is always at our fingertips, emphasizing how the Method of Loci can help keep our minds sharp and allow us to engage more deeply with the information we learn. From Perplexity's Discover Feed: https://www.perplexity.ai/page/the-method-of-loci-lKScL8YTQkqwUKzeSSVc.APerplexity is the fastest and most powerful way to search the web. This episode kicks off my new Deep Dive series on "Learning How to Learn." This has been my most requested topic, and I wanted to share with you all of the lessons I've learned along the way. As a lifelong learner, I certainly don't think I've "arrived." But by sharing with you all of the mistakes, triumphs, and crucial lessons I've learned along the way, I believe this series can provide a significant impact in your own learning journey. In this episode, I bust some common myths about learning and challenge the assumptions many of us picked up in school. Too often, both positive performance and negative performance in school can place limiting beliefs on our abilities to learn as adults. Leading research has shown just how neuroplastic our brains can be as adults -- but it's all dependent on the core beliefs we have around learning. I'll explain why a growth mindset is crucial and how learning is about so much more than academics. Whether you're 25 or 65, this episode will change how you think about your ability to learn and grow. Get ready to unlock your potential.---P.S.: If you have a brand, and you want to learn exactly how to transform it into a game-changer in your industry, then Legendary Brands Academy was made with you in mind. She has compared EFT against Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for food cravings; EFT versus CBT for Depression in Adults; EFT for academic fear and resilience in 15-year-old students; and EFT for sufferers of chronic pain. She has also led the world's first trial examining neural changes after EFT for food issues (fMRI study). It was such a brilliant conversation and really interesting to hear where she thinks EFT/Tapping is going in the coming years from a standard and recommended perspective. Key takeaways: How EFT/Tapping made its way to Dr Peta in Australia EFT was first researched in a large food cravings trial against gold standard CBT the two papers are here and here and the first fMRI research is here Dr Peta's approach to managing potential negative outcomes of her research, or anyone's opinion or judgement of Tapping. Something that can be used for any future outcome - tap on your worry and you stop attracting it Big News: Dr Peta + her team are working on a paper for the American Psychological Association to get EFT listed as evidence-based on their website - with a huge impact for EFT as a result Great advice to keep a tapping journal to reflect back on your tapping journey Definition of Tapping - it's a stress-reduction technique by stimulating acupuncture points on the face on the top half of the body while thinking about the stressful situation you are experiencing EFT is a Somatic Therapy - it's a physical therapy with a cognitive element to it, its the 4th wave of psychology - watch her Ted Talk (link below) Philosophy separated the mind and body - Doctors should treat the body and Priests/Philosophers should treat the mind - we are trying to move the field to a more integrated approach Tapping is used in hospitals, GP surgeries, national disability scheme (Government funded), midwives in Australia - it is very accepted and normalised in culture More research coming out of USA, Australia, UK and more recently Iraq, Iran, Korea, Indonesia are pumping out EFT trials, as the more, it is researched or published the more credibility it will have, and it will then attract government funding. EFT International has recently put in a grant for NICE funding to support EFT for depression It takes a new therapy 17 years to be accepted into the mainstream, with EFT we're year 16/17! The American Psychological Association published Dr Peta's Cortisol reduction (43%) research paper (mainstream journal) giving EFT a huge acknowledgement and was a big win for the therapy - that paper is here CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) has over 800 randomised trials and allows the person to become aware of the emotion and then helps them work out the belief/thought behind them - they then rehearse that out to swap into a more functional thought process. It takes CBT groups about 6 months to show an outcome where the EFT works within 6 weeks, and CBT takes more effort and practice, and may not get to the root cause of the issue. EFT helps identify the root cause of a person's issue. Once the heat of the emotion has settled down, then the memory is able to come up to present the root problem and then different techniques can be used to release the energy from that event. Tapping gives the mind and body a sense of safety and we're changing DNA expression, cortisol reduction, EUG brain scans, heart rate variability, and blood pressure - the body's physical system is changing through tapping - paper summarises all changes here 3 studies published on EFT on gene expression - found that tapping changes gene expression (whether they are turned on and off). This links to ancestral trauma. Research is here and here Dr Peta discusses an EFT trial for patients undergoing their cancer treatment - read about that here and there is also a new book here New landmark study (Iran) for a trial for Nurses working with Covid patients and taught them EFT targeting burnout. The outcomes were statistically significant, and their burnout, anxiety, and depression were reduced - read about that here and another new nurses's study here New Australian study using EFT for Sub-Acute Pain during Covid funded by the Australian Government (to intervene before the pain becomes Chronic), the pre-released data shows a significant improvement (not published yet). Dr Peta's latest research on Chronic Pain during the pandemic will be released with significant outcomes. A recent study in Iran is about to be published where an EFT trial in a hospital setting for women who had had a spontaneous miscarriage, 12 individual sessions - full paper here UK researchers are looking to research the use of EFT for PTSD after birth trauma. US study is looking at the use of EFT in the area of autism and the mothers of autistic children to manage their anxieties etc - paper here About Dr Peta: Dr Peta Stapleton has 25 years of experience as a registered Clinical and Health Psychologist and is currently an Associate Professor in Psychology at Bond University (Australia). In 2019 she was named Psychologist of the Year by the Australian Allied Health Awards. She is a world-leading researcher in EFT and has established herself as one of Australia's leading Health Professionals. Her research focuses on the 4th wave of psychological therapies that focus on the mind and body. On this weekly episode, natural selection and ‘survival of the fittest,' does it still play a dominant role? There was a time when only the strongest could survive in the wild. Is the quote still true despite the fact that it has been hindered for years due to our greatest fear of being food for wild animals? Nowadays, with the availability of better healthcare, food, heating, and hygiene the number of ‘hazards' we experience in our lives has dramatically reduced. With technology leading the way, my biggest pondering is are we adapting to it in such a way that our humanity is becoming an afterthought. According to Yale researchers, 26 percent of American adults admit to not having read even part of a book within the past year. Reading is a love of mine that has been nurtured since I was a child. During the summer break, my mother would require one book to be read with a written or verbal book report in order to go outside and play. Reading has so many benefits such as: Mental Stimulation, Stress Reduction, Knowledge, Vocabulary Expansion, Memory Improvement and, Tranquility. There is a phrase that is so common; you may have heard it twice last week, ‘Know thyself!' The phrase has a serious philosophical pedigree: Self-knowledge is important for one's central reason: because it offers us a route to greater happiness and fulfillment. A lack of self-knowledge leaves you open to mishaps and mistaken ambitions. Armed with the right sort of self-knowledge, we have a greater chance of avoiding errors in our dealings with others and in the formulation of our life choices. Most people think being an entrepreneur means you’ll be the boss, taking control and choosing when and how much you want to work. In reality, being an entrepreneur can be one of the most difficult tasks in the beginning. It’s far easier to just work a traditional J.O.B. As you start your own business, it feels like you’re doing everything. Then as you figure it out, you can start to pass your duties on to other people. It takes time. The success of a company takes a lot of time, but unlike a traditional J.O.B. being an entrepreneur has no limit to your success or your salary. If you have the dedication to stick through all of the setbacks you’ll hit a point where you can’t ever imagine working for someone else again. On that note, the biggest mistake I’ve seen people do is give up. Generally, when you feel like you’re about to give up that’s right when success is around the corner. You need to keep pushing past that point, and trust that it will happen. To discuss this more I brought on a very special guest today, Dave Farrow. Dave Farrow is the Guinness World Record Holder for Greatest Memory - he memorized the exact order of 59 packs of shuffled playing cards and recalled them with only one card error - that's 3068 cards! Dave began his career as a failing ADHD and Dyslexic student in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Ready to drop out, Dave went to the library to learn everything he could about memory, to improve his grades and graduate. While still in high school, Dave began teaching memory improvement techniques to other students and teachers and they all loved it. In 1996, Dave Farrow earned the Guinness Record for Greatest Memory by memorizing and recalling the order of 52 decks of shuffled playing cards (2704 cards). In 2007, he broke his own record by memorizing and recalling the order of 59 decks of shuffled playing cards (3068 cards). Today, Dave Farrow is a successful speaker, author and entrepreneur. His Farrow Method for Memory Improvement and Brain Based Learning is the top learning program of it's kind in the world. Dave and the Farrow Method have been featured on over 2000 interviews on TV, Radio and in print publications. Download this episode today and learn what it takes to find your own world record.

The Neurogenesis Diet and Lifestyle; Ugrade Your Brain, Upgrade Your Life with Brant Cortright Only recently has it been discovered that the brain produces new brain cells throughout our entire lives, a process called neurogenesis. The rate at which we form new brain cells has a profound influence upon every aspect of our life. When the rate of neurogenesis is low, we see cognitive deficits and memory problems, anxiety and stress, depression, and lowered immunity. Life is difficult. This book spells out the symptoms of dementia, the stages of dementia, signs of cognitive decline and stages of Alzheimer's. The plan presented in The Neurogenesis Diet and Lifestyle will help to ward off cognitive decline and avoid dementia stages. This lifestyle is the only lifestyle for which there is scientific evidence supporting it, based on a late 2014 research study by the Buck Foundation. The Neurogenesis Diet and Lifestyle is aimed at improving how your brain functions. Your rate of neurogenesis may be the most important factor in your brain health. And increasing your rate of neurogenesis by three to five times can result in powerfully improved memory, learning, cognitive enhancement, as well as improved immunity and protection against stress and depression. Brant Cortright, Ph.D., is a highly respected clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies. His consulting practice specializes in cutting-edge brain health and neuroscience-informed depth therapy. He is the author of two previous books and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
