If you are new to tapping or are curious about the proof of its efficacy then this is the episode for you! In today's episode, I am honoured to talk to Dr Peta Stapleton. Based in Australia, Dr Peta has become the world's leading expert in the science behind tapping and proving its efficacy for supporting and resolving key issues that impact our general health. She has compared EFT against Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for food cravings; EFT versus CBT for Depression in Adults; EFT for academic fear and resilience in 15-year-old students; and EFT for sufferers of chronic pain. She has also led the world's first trial examining neural changes after EFT for food issues (fMRI study). It was such a brilliant conversation and really interesting to hear where she thinks EFT/Tapping is going in the coming years from a standard and recommended perspective. Something that can be used for any future outcome - tap on your worry and you stop attracting it Big News: Dr Peta + her team are working on a paper for the American Psychological Association to get EFT listed as evidence-based on their website - with a huge impact for EFT as a result Great advice to keep a tapping journal to reflect back on your tapping journey Definition of Tapping - it's a stress-reduction technique by stimulating acupuncture points on the face on the top half of the body while thinking about the stressful situation you are experiencing EFT is a Somatic Therapy - it's a physical therapy with a cognitive element to it, its the 4th wave of psychology - watch her Ted Talk (link below) Philosophy separated the mind and body - Doctors should treat the body and Priests/Philosophers should treat the mind - we are trying to move the field to a more integrated approach Tapping is used in hospitals, GP surgeries, national disability scheme (Government funded), midwives in Australia - it is very accepted and normalised in culture More research coming out of USA, Australia, UK and more recently Iraq, Iran, Korea, Indonesia are pumping out EFT trials, as the more, it is researched or published the more credibility it will have, and it will then attract government funding. EFT International has recently put in a grant for NICE funding to support EFT for depression It takes a new therapy 17 years to be accepted into the mainstream, with EFT we're year 16/17! The American Psychological Association published Dr Peta's Cortisol reduction (43%) research paper (mainstream journal) giving EFT a huge acknowledgement and was a big win for the therapy - that paper is here CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) has over 800 randomised trials and allows the person to become aware of the emotion and then helps them work out the belief/thought behind them - they then rehearse that out to swap into a more functional thought process. It takes CBT groups about 6 months to show an outcome where the EFT works within 6 weeks, and CBT takes more effort and practice, and may not get to the root cause of the issue. EFT helps identify the root cause of a person's issue. Once the heat of the emotion has settled down, then the memory is able to come up to present the root problem and then different techniques can be used to release the energy from that event. Tapping gives the mind and body a sense of safety and we're changing DNA expression, cortisol reduction, EUG brain scans, heart rate variability, and blood pressure - the body's physical system is changing through tapping - paper summarises all changes here 3 studies published on EFT on gene expression - found that tapping changes gene expression (whether they are turned on and off). This links to ancestral trauma. Research is here and here Dr Peta discusses an EFT trial for patients undergoing their cancer treatment - read about that here and there is also a new book here New landmark study (Iran) for a trial for Nurses working with Covid patients and taught them EFT targeting burnout. The outcomes were statistically significant, and their burnout, anxiety, and depression were reduced - read about that here and another new nurses's study here New Australian study using EFT for Sub-Acute Pain during Covid funded by the Australian Government (to intervene before the pain becomes Chronic), the pre-released data shows a significant improvement (not published yet). Dr Peta's latest research on Chronic Pain during the pandemic will be released with significant outcomes. A recent study in Iran is about to be published where an EFT trial in a hospital setting for women who had had a spontaneous miscarriage, 12 individual sessions - full paper here UK researchers are looking to research the use of EFT for PTSD after birth trauma. US study is looking at the use of EFT in the area of autism and the mothers of autistic children to manage their anxieties etc - paper here About Dr Peta: Dr Peta Stapleton has 25 years of experience as a registered Clinical and Health Psychologist and is currently an Associate Professor in Psychology at Bond University (Australia). In 2019 she was named Psychologist of the Year by the Australian Allied Health Awards. Her research focuses on the 4th wave of psychological therapies that focus on the mind and body. Ready to drop out, Dave went to the library to learn everything he could about memory, to improve his grades and graduate. While still in high school, Dave began teaching memory improvement techniques to other students and teachers and they all loved it. In 1996, Dave Farrow earned the Guinness Record for Greatest Memory by memorizing and recalling the order of 52 decks of shuffled playing cards (2704 cards). In 2007, he broke his own record by memorizing and recalling the order of 59 decks of shuffled playing cards (3068 cards). Today, Dave Farrow is a successful speaker, author and entrepreneur. Did you know that a common spice could improve your memory? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Turmeric a plant from the ginger family contains curcumin. Most people know it from its orangish color, but did you know that its has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. A new study showed that daily consumption of a certain form of curcumin improved memory and mood in people with mild, age-related memory loss. Researchers at UCLA looked at 40 adults ages of 50 and 90 years who had mild memory issues. Participants were randomly given either placebo or 90 milligrams of curcumin twice daily for 18 months. People taking curcumin improved by 28 percent on their memory tests. So, next time you are on the spice isle, pick up some turmeric and cook yourself to a better memory. How To Use Your Emotions To Memorize More Instead Of Letting Them Take Over Your Life And Make A Big Fat Mess Of Everything You're an emotional person, aren't you? Those uncontrollable feelings well up from time to time, perhaps even taking over the show. In other words, emotions replace the you that you know with someone quite different. At least, that's one way of looking at it. Emotions are different versions of ourselves. The self that becomes overwhelmed by laughter is different than the self who drowns in sorrow and misery. But then eventually you find your way back. You become you once again. The Only Problem Is That You Don't Become You! Strong emotional states change you, and I'll bet you remember at least a couple of times that you've been changed so strongly by an emotional state that you've had no means of going back. You're as chemically changed as toast is to bread. The question is, to what extent is this change due to memory? Has the experience of emotion changed you as such, or does it impact your memory so much that you literally remember to be a different person. Certainly, post traumatic stress disorder provides some examples of people affected by memories so strongly that constant recall of the traumatic event causes that new version of the person to hold fast. But that state does have to be renewed. Even if the person feels that the memories are coming back of their own accord, they must at some level be participating in the reconstruction. And such events don't mean that trauma has improved memory in that instant so much so that the person remembers everything in sparkling detail. Traumatic memory in no way ensures accuracy and it can also lead to the repression of memory. The Return Of The Repressed Repression and suppression of memory is really intense because it is essentially an attempt to obliterate memories from the mind. But as Sigmund Freud made himself famous for saying, what we repress returns, usually in the form of a monster. Post-Freud, we have some interesting research about the suppression of memory. For example, test subjects asked to repress feelings of disgust while watching a horror movie remembered far less about the story and with much less accuracy than those not asked to repress their feelings. And plane crash survivors who remain calm have been said to remember more than people overwhelmed by hysterics. I've experienced this memory effect myself following a near miss trying to land in Toronto. I was going there from New York to sit for a field exam when the plane suddenly pulled up and circled over the city. We late learned that another plane had still been on the runway ahead of us, and thank goodness the pilot pulled us out of there in time enough to avoid a fiery collision. Although I didn't go crazy in terms of screaming or crying out, my inner life went nuts, something that affected my memory for days and days after. While sitting for the exam, for the first time I felt a real disruption in accessing my Memory Palaces and mnemonics. All the more so because one person on the committee was in the warpath and doing her best to see me fail. But luckily, I had relaxation on my side and calmed myself. I reminded myself of the combined power of memory and relaxation and without suppressing or repressing the feelings of terror I remembered from the previous days's adventure in the sky, I managed to handle that remembered stress and the current stress at the same time. And this is interesting because I could have broken down into tears or hysterics in that examination room because I was so fragile. But according to some theories, memories and the emotions tied to them don't force us to act in particular ways. But these emotional memories do influence our actions. I usually find something cool there, often old cards with interesting buildings are memorable art that helps stimulate creativity. Anyhow, I was stopped at a light when all of a sudden two guys ran into the street in front of a car. They asked a group of maybe three people, "This one?" and the group of people said yes. Rage-Fuelled Vengeance On The Streets Of Berlin! Then the two guys approached the doors of the car. One went to the passenger side, the other to the driver's side. I think the car was blue, but I don't quite remember. It may have had four doors. What I do remember is that the guys opened the doors and started yelling. The driver and the passenger were clearly in shock and didn't know what to do. Finally, the passenger pulled out a wallet and in a Russian accent, the guy standing in the street said, "Give it me!" He ripped the wallet out of the guy's hand and slammed the door. As the other guy slammed the driver's door, the colliding air created a puff of ash from the ashtray. After the two men got back onto the sidewalk, the light turned green and the car sped off. It might seem amazing that I remember all these details, but actually stress and memory can fuse together to help you remember more in certain circumstances. A lot of people suffer from a "bad memory." Me too. If I don't use the simple memory improvement techniques I've learned, my memory has about the same chance as a dog hearing "sit" once without a shred of repetition. It doesn't do much good for improving memory. But we're not dogs. And we have memory techniques. We can hear something once and memorize it forever. And without being dramatic or theatrical (a rare thing for me, dear Memorizers), I can tell you that I think that not developing the skill to do so is a crime against humanity. Failing to memorize using the simple techniques I teach robs not only yourself, but many others of the benefits of this powerful skill. Plus, you get to share information that you've placed in your mind. Valuable knowledge that you can produce at will. Change the world kind of stuff. Or it can be the memorize of simple things that makes a huge difference. Like when you're boarding a plane and you keep forgetting your seat number, holding up the line to look at your ticket for the umpteenth time. Or when your child asks you what year some important event took place for his or her exam at school (major). Or when you're playing Blackjack and you have no idea how many cards are out (could be major, could be minor depending on your pot). Or when you're talking to someone and you have to ask them for a second time what their name is, sometimes just 30 seconds or less after the first time you heard it ... This final point is a real doozy. Memorizing names is a moral obligation because it tells the person you're meeting that you care about who they are, that they're someone worth knowing, that their name has value. Some names are easy. You don't need a special method to memorize Tom, Dick or Harry (at least most of us probably don't). But the world is becoming more and more internationalized. We're meeting more and more people with name structures that we're not familiar with. And we need to be able to remember them in to be more sociable and to ensure that people know we value them in the daily interactions we make. It's not that difficult. Hear a name, make a bizarre, exaggerated, big and bright picture filled with zany action and you'll have that name memorized in a Magnetic second. That's the basics of one of the techniques. As you know, there are many others. And a lot of fine details that structure each. It makes a huge difference if you know what they are and how to use them. Abstract: Recent investigations have implicated the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in higher-order executive functions. These actions are purported to occur through ANS modulation of the prefrontal cortex, with parasympathetic activity during wake associated with working memory ability (WM). Compared with wake, sleep is a period with substantially greater parasympathetic tone. Recent work has reported that sleep may also contribute to improvement in WM. Here, we examined the role of cardiac parasympathetic activity during sleep on WM improvement in healthy young adults. Participants were tested in an operation span task (OSpan) in the morning and evening, and during the inter-test period subjects either experienced a nap or wake. We measured high frequency heart rate variability (HF HRV) as an index of cardiac, parasympathetic activity during both wake and sleep. Participants showed the expected boost in parasympathetic activity during nap, compared with wake, as well as greater WM improvement after a nap compared with an equivalent period awake. Furthermore, parasympathetic activity during sleep, but not wake, was significantly correlated with WM improvement. Together these results indicate that the natural boost in parasympathetic activity during sleep has substantial benefits to gains in prefrontal executive function in young adults. We present a conceptual model illustrating the interaction between sleep, autonomic activity, and prefrontal brain function, and highlight open research questions that will facilitate understanding of the factors that contribute to executive abilities in young adults, as well as in cognitive aging.
