In this episode, plastic smiles and perfectly coiffed doppelgängers are a veneer of perfection obscuring suburban darkness in Bryan Forbes' The Stepford Wives (1975). Based on the novel by Ira Levin (1972), the film follows a woman named Joanna (Katherine Ross), who moves to a seemingly perfect suburban town only to discover that the women are being replaced with emotionless, submissive robots created by their husbands. Blending social commentary, satire and suspense, the film has been criticized for its “vision of feminism.” But given the current political landscape, does its themes deserve reconsideration? We're breaking it all down today with spoilers, so stay tuned.

Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're exploring a classic blend of horror and satirical science fiction with The Stepford Wives (1975). Directed by Bryan Forbes and based on the novel by Ira Levin, this film delves into themes of feminism, identity, and the dark side of suburban conformity. The Stepford Wives follows Joanna Eberhart, played by Katharine Ross, who moves with her family from bustling New York City to the seemingly idyllic suburban community of Stepford, Connecticut. Joanna, a photographer and independent woman, soon becomes uneasy about the submissive and domestic behaviour of the other wives in town.As Joanna's discomfort grows, she befriends another newcomer, Bobbie Markowe, portrayed by Paula Prentiss. Together, they begin to investigate why the wives of Stepford seem so eerily perfect and compliant. Their investigation leads them to a chilling discovery about the men of Stepford and their disturbing vision of the “ideal” wife. The movie tackles themes of feminism and autonomy head-on, depicting a society that literally tries to manufacture the perfect wife, stripping women of their independence and individuality. It raises questions about gender roles and the extent to which societal pressures enforce conformity at the expense of personal freedom. The Stepford Wives is an excellent film for viewers interested in classic horror with a strong message. It's suitable for families with older teenagers, providing a springboard for discussions about individuality, societal expectations, and gender dynamics. It offers both thrills and an opportunity for insightful dialogue about the themes it portrays. Why It's a Must-Watch For fans of psychological thrillers, classic horror, or films that offer a critique of society, The Stepford Wives is a must-watch. Its combination of suspenseful storytelling, strong acting, and meaningful commentary ensures it remains relevant and impactful even decades after its release. So join us as we revisit the eerie perfection of Stepford and peel back the layers of one of cinema's most chilling tales about the quest for the “ideal” life. The Stepford Wives promises not only to entertain but also to provoke thought and discussion about the dark corners of societal norms.

This is a classic from the 70s that both ghouls love, The Stepford Wives! From wiki: “The Stepford Wives is a 1975 American satirical psychological thriller film directed by Bryan Forbes. It was written by William Goldman, who based his screenplay on Ira Levin's 1972 novel of the same name. By 4pm she'd been diagnosed with grade III Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma.Sarah's brilliant new book – Dancing With The Red Devil – tells the story of what happened next. It's an account of facing down cancer and chemotherapy during those dark days of COVID but also the most wonderful, valuable memoir of family, of love and the power of friendship in crisis.Sarah is someone who loves to laugh but who also tells it like it is. Recipe for a riotous sixties romp? Take two aging thespians, mix in a dozen dependable character actors, add three or four comic geniuses to bind it all together and season with a generous pinch of psychedelic Victoriana. Top it off with a rising young star and the director's wife and the result is a complex confection full of surprises which the whole family can enjoy! Joining Tyler this week is writer, podcaster and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington to talk about a film which he (rightly) argues is unfairly underappreciated: Bryan Forbes' 1966 ensemble comedy The Wrong Box. It qualifies for this podcast owing to a film-stealing turn by Peter Sellers as Doctor Pratt, but he is only one of many delights - it also features Peter Cook & Dudley Moore as a pair of hissable villains, Wilfrid Lawson as a butler on the verge of collapse, Michael Caine as the dashing, if naive, romantic lead, Tony Hancock as a rheumy-eyed troubled 'tec and Ralph Richardson as an increasingly erratic epistemophilic uncle! Also in 'blink-and-you'll-miss-'em' terms, Valentine Dyall, John Junkin, Leonard Rossiter and Graham Stark! (Graham Stark appears by kind permission of Mr Sellers). And, of course, the Lovely Nanette Newman as Miss Julia Finsbury. It's a fun, rambling conversation which, like the film itself, takes a lot of surprising turns! For this episode, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, blogger and podcaster movierob, who has chosen as his selection the David Lean/Alec Guinness epic The Bridge on the River Kwai, while I have chosen the more cynical Bryan Forbes angry young man film, King Rat, both about prisoners in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. And in this episode we answer such questions as: Who was the first actor considered for the Alec Guiness role in The Bridge on the River Kwai? What happened to George Segal's career? What mistake did Pierre Boulle make about the location of the river and what did the government of Burma do in response? Where was King Rat filmed? Where did the Corporal Bogey march come from and how did it end up in the movie? Are both films about being at war, or are they really about the British class system? What did William Holden have to do to his body to take the role in …Kwai? What game show host appeared at the end of King Rat? What horror film did author James Clavell write that launched his screenwriting career? Quatermass 2 (a.k.a. Enemy From Space in the United States and Canada) is a 1957 black-and-white British science fiction horror film from Hammer Film Productions, directed by Val Guest, that stars Brian Donlevy, John Longden, Sidney James, Bryan Forbes, Vera Day, and William Franklyn.Quatermass 2 is a sequel to Hammer's earlier film The Quatermass Xperiment, Like its predecessor, it is based on the BBC Television serial Quatermass II written by Nigel Kneale.Brian Donlevy reprises his role as the eponymous Professor Bernard Quatermass, making him the only actor to play the character twice in a film. It is considered as the first film sequel to use the ‘2' / ‘II' suffix within the title. The film's storyline concerns Quatermass's investigation of reports of hundreds of meteorites landing only in the Winnerden Flats area of the UK. His inquiries lead him to a huge industrial complex, strikingly similar to his own plans for a Moon colony. This top-secret facility is in fact the centre of a conspiracy involving the alien infiltration of the highest echelons of the British Government. Quatermass and his allies must now do whatever is necessary to defeat the alien threat before it is too late. The first Quatermass film had been a major success for Hammer and, eager for a sequel, they purchased the rights to Nigel Kneale's follow-up before the BBC had even begun transmission of the new serial. For this adaptation, Nigel Kneale himself was allowed to write the first draft of the screenplay, although subsequent drafts were worked on by director Val Gues who directed the first Hammer Quatrmass. Guest once again employed many cinema vérité techniques to present the fantastic elements of the plot with the greatest degree of realism. Nigel Kneale was critical of the final film, mainly on account of the return of Brian Donlevy in the lead role. Kneale was unhappy with Donlevy's interpretation of the character and also claimed the actor's performance was marred by his alcoholism.Although Quatermass 2 was financially successful, its box office performance was eclipsed by the massive success of another Hammer film, The Curse of Frankenstein, which was to be the first of their many Gothic horror films. (and the subject of our 2nd ever podcast episode) As a result it would be ten years before Hammer adapted the next Quatermass serial for the cinema with Quatermass and the Pit in 1967. Supposedly Quatermass 2 was originally shot in AnsaColor, developed by Agfa, but released in Black and White and it is said the colour negative still exists in the archives - although this could be a weird online hoax.Something Horrific:Whisper Down the Laneby Clay McLeod Chapman https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/55671294-whisper-down-the-laneCornish Horrors: Tales from the Land's Endby Joan Passey (Editor)https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58320855-cornish-horrorsWhere Furnaces Burnby Joel Lanehttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16299282-where-furnaces-burn$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Book Vs Movie The Stepford Wives  Ira Levin’s Terrifying 1972 Novel Vs The 1975 William Goldman’s Screenplay (Or is it?) Also, the really bad take by Roger Ebert in 1975 (and the sequel!) The Margos are heading back to the Burbs with our long 70s flowing hair and obsession with waxing kitchen floors in the Ira Levin classic novel The Stepford Wives that was turned into a film in 1975 and directed by Bryan Forbes. Stepford, Connecticut is the fictional setting where families move in and within four months--the wives turn into robots who love, sex, cooking, and cleaning  Joanna Eberhart leaves her beloved NYC for Stepford because her husband wants to experience life in such a surreally lovely setting. He also joins the local men’s group and stays every night. Joanna knows something is messed up but can’t figure out exactly what is going on to the women of Stepford--until its too late.   The 1975 adaptation did modestly well and had some bad reviews by top critics like Paulene Kael and Roger Ebert (he was a bit of a sexist, y’all!) The screenplay was adapted by past Book Vs Movie subject William Goldman (The Princess Bride) and directed by Bryan Forbes who chose his wife as one of the first Stepford wives we meet--which therefore changed the proposed costuming of miniskirts to modest dresses. Many people think is a mistake in the telling of the story. They are wrong and we discuss that in the podcast. The film was nightmare fuel to so many kids who saw it on TV in the 70s and 80s and revisiting the book brought back was such a fun treat (we originally covered this in 2016.)  So which did we prefer between the book and the movie? Have a listen and find out.  In this ep the Margos discuss: The biography of author Ira Levin The main points of the story and the women’s rights movement of the 1960s & 1970s Changes between the 1972 novel and 1975 film Our theory as to why some top critics at the time (coughs, Roger Ebert, coughs) missed the whole point of the film The cast including Katharine Ross (Joanna Eberhart,) Paula Prentiss (Bobbie Markowe,) Peter Masterson (Walter Eberhart,) Nanette Newman (Carol Van Sant,) Tina Louise (Charmaine Wimpiris,) Patrick O’Neal (Dale “Diz” Coba,) Josef Sommer (Ted Van Sant,) Franklin Cover (Ed Wimpiris,) Carol Eve Rossen (Dr. Francher,) and Mary Stuart Masterson (Kim Eberhart) Clips used The Stepford Wives have a “consciousness-raising” discussion “The Stepford Wives” trailer (1975) Bobbie meets Joanna Joanna finds out what really happens to the women Music: Michael Small Join our Patreon page to help support the show! https://www.patreon.com/bookversusmovie    Book Vs.

Taken from http://www.nicolabryant.net Nicolas own site Nicola is probably best known to the public for her work in Television. Her first professional role was as the American companion Peri in Doctor Who opposite Peter Davison and Colin Baker. "I grew up in a small Surrey village just outside Guildford. My parents, Sheila and Denis had two daughters. I came along first and then three years later, my little sister Tracy arrived. Both sets of grandparents and many aunts and uncles all lived in the same village. It was a great way to grow up. It gave both my sister and I such freedom. Only once you reached your teens did the cosiness start to feel a little claustrophobic but that's all a part of growing up. I started dance classes at the age of 3 and piano a year later. When friends visited we would spend the day choreographing little shows that we would perform that evening for our long suffering parents. All I knew was that I wanted to be a dancer. I wanted to be on stage. I always wanted to go to ballet school and although at age 10 I auditioned and was accepted into several schools I couldn't go because I suffered so badly from asthma, which ran in the family. I was so upset by this that my mother got me involved in a local amateur dramatics company and I soon started to fall in love with acting. Once I had completed my formal education I auditioned for all the London drama schools eventually accepting a scholarship to the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. It was in my final year at Webber Douglas that a production of the American musical "" was staged. We all had to audition for the parts and I got the role of Nanette, much to everyone's surprise, including my own. Weeks later I had completed my diploma at Webber Douglas and I was out in the big wide world of professionals, searching for work. At that time of course there was the catch 22 situation that you needed to work to get your equity card but you couldn't get work without an equity card. To make matters worse there were very few jobs that would give you a card. Well, to cut a long story short, Terry Carney called me to audition for the part of "Peri" the new American companion in . I was incredibly lucky to get that chance and after 3 months of auditions in which the producer John Nathan-Turner saw literally hundreds of girls from the States and Canada, I finally got the part. It was a wonderful time, in which I made a lot of friends and worked with some amazing people. I then spent nine months in the West End with Patrick McNee at the Savoy Theatre in the thriller "" directed by Bryan Forbes. After a leading role in the West End and playing the companion in Doctor Who my career was well and truly launched. Since then I've been lucky enough to have had a very varied career, travelling the world and working with some wonderfully talented people in various mediums; stage, television, audio and film. This year I have made appearances in the soon to be released TV series 'Love in Hyde Park'; in the sit-com 'My Family'; and the controversial drama documentary on Princess Diana's inquest, 'There are Dark Forces'.
