The Interagency Bison Management Program partners met at Chico Hot Springs Resort in early November. The partners include tribal representatives, state and federal officials. When the Park Service attempted to change some language in the group's adaptive management plan, the executive officer of the Montana Department of Livestock protested. But, there's a lot more to this story than this one meeting. At play are simmering tensions between the State of Montana and the Park Service over managing the migratory bison that call Yellowstone National Park home for most of the year. With me today is Brett French, outdoors editor at the Billings Gazette, who attended the gathering and has reported on Yellowstone bison for years. There were many exciting things at this year's National Western Stock Show, but one of the highlights was the group meeting up on the side pens of the Event Center. The Bison people were there in force, and the critters they came with stole the show, even if it was 25 degrees and snowing. Especially since it was that cold, because in the frigid air the already impressive and feisty beasts were breathing out steam from their nostrils like something out of The Hobbit. Today, we're sharing a conversation we had with Chad Kremer, President of the National Bison Association, Herd Manager for Custer State Park in South Dakota, long-time bison ranch owner, and title holder of the National Western's Most Interesting Mustache. He was also a super nice guy, and a true representative of All Things Good about South Dakota. After speaking with him, it looks like another roundup might be in our filming future -- Buffalo style, so it looks like we're going back.Done with capitals yet? Wild, Wooly, and Untamed. With that, we'll put our foot down (but gently)(And as a side note – how many people can legitimately say they're president of the NBA? How cool is that?) Bested Adapted Podcast stumbles back into your feed with the iconic and super-well-known and easily streamable Where the Buffalo Roam. Based on the writings of Hunter S. Thompson, the film stars Bill Murray as the gonzo journalist and follows his relationship with Chicano activist Oscar Acosta. Pitched as both a slapstick comedy and meditation on the death of counter-culture, Where the Buffalo Roam presents a boozy rendition of American pop-culture and history. But does this adaptation live up to the wit and irreverence of Hunter S. Thompson's writings? Or is it simply a gonzo-goofout? Joined by scholar, labor organizer, and journalist Omari Averette-Phillips, Caleb and Frank discuss the NFL (bad), Bill Murray (good), and Bruno Kirby (the best). Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam. This 19th-century poem line turned western song lyric evokes days past when wild bison covered wide open spaces across North America. But these days, the only place wild American plains bison can be witnessed in large, free-roaming herds is within Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone bison are the descendants of just two dozen animals who found refuge in Yellowstone's high interior during the mass extermination of bison that took place in the late 1800s at the hands of European settlers and the American military. Today, nearly 6,000 bison roam Yellowstone, but you may be surprised to learn that unlike other wild animals that are free to move in and out of the park, bison are largely confined to Yellowstone. In Episode 10, we'll sit down with the Greater Yellowstone Coalition's own senior wildlife conservation associate, Shana Drimal. Shana is a wildlife biologist by training who spends her days working to restore bison to the American west and make it easier for people and bison to coexist. We'll discuss why she thinks bison are the coolest, hear a remarkable story about a mother bison devoted to her calf, and learn about some of the challenges we face in trying to restore bison to their ancestral habitat beyond Yellowstone National Park itself. So, get ready to learn a whole lot about North America's largest land mammal, the bison.Voices of Greater Yellowstone was created by the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, a conservation nonprofit dedicated to working with people to protect the lands, waters, and wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, now and for future generations. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is the land of 49+ Indigenous Tribes who maintain current and ancestral connections to the lands, waters, wildlife, plants, and more.> Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get podcasts.> Join our bison advocate list or email Shana at sdrimal@greateryellowstone.org> Learn more about GYC's bison work> Sign-up for our podcast supporter email list> Support the podcast and give a gift to GYCPodcast Artwork > Rachel Dunlap ArtMusic >Redwood Trail by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...)Artist: http://audionautix.com/Support the show

Lea Jones (of Buffalo Romeo) joins the podcast as an interview guest. Jones has been making music around the country for many many years. Mixing folk, Americana, country, blues, and more. After teaming up with guitarist Keenan Dorn to form Buffalo Romeo something magic happened. A duo emerged of singer/songwriters that have an age gap of over 40 years (Jones age 67, Dorn age 26). Proving generational divides are breakable and age is just a number, they mesh so well that Jones has been quoted as saying “He knows where I'm going in tunes before I do”. Strange anomalies arise when viewing the latest shooting in Buffalo from a distance. Initially, the shooter was identified as someone completely different. Strange syncs and twilight language emerges. Echoes of the Buffalo shaman from Jan 6th, all the way back to Buffalo Bill (see yesterdays show) and the scripting of the American West with his traveling western shows that lead right up to the beginning of cinema, where Tom Mix becomes America's first cowboy star, whose cabin is located in the infamous, Laurel Canyon, where the freak scene of the 1960's is born. Of course, Tom Mix would have to be born on Jan 6th to bring it all back home.
Bills Talk, Perfect Pull, 3 Times as Nice - Episode #493
Phil & Jake rank iconic comic actor Bill Murray, BIC lighters, and cake sprinkles on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil talks about how he uses antiquated stoner terminology to describe the workings of asthma inhalers. It's not that he's committed to the stoner lifestyle but that they have the best terms for describing things like that. "This albuterol is cashed." "You can have green hit on this Xopenex." Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn starred in Foul Play which is pretty good and is set in San Francisco. When Phil lived in NYC he was homesick and made it a point to watch movies set in SF. Jake surmises the name of the movie is Lucky Chances Casino, which is the name of a Bay Area casino. We talk about a lot of Bill Murray movies, including Caddyshack, Meatballs, Stripes, Ghostbusters, The Razor's Edge, Little Shop of Horrors, Ghostbusters 2, Groundhog Day, Quick Change, Mad Dog and Glory, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Lost in Translation and Where the Buffalo Roam (which is the one we couldn't remember the name of, where he plays Hunter S. Thompson). We also discuss Scrooged, which screenwriter Michael O'Donoghue considered his greatest work. It was directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, Superman, the Twilight Zone episode where William Shatner sees a gremlin on the side of the plane) who had much broader sensibilities. "We wrote a fucking masterpiece. We wrote It Happened One Night. We wrote a story that could make you laugh and cry. You would have wanted to share it with your grandchildren every fucking Christmas for the next hundred years. The finished film was a piece of unadulterated, unmitigated shit." Bill Murray voiced the titular role in the Garfield movie (and the sequel Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties). He agreed to do it because he saw it was written by Joel Cohen and thought it was Joel Coen (who made– with his brother– Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, the Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo). The documentary that Jake watched about Murray's real-life antics is called The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man. Bill Paxton rules as Chet in Weird Science. Producer Steve does a deep dive into what the makeup of the Rochester Amerks roster could look like next season
Have yourself a very Spidey Christmas with everyone's friendly neighborhood webhead and his very first cinematic outing from Sam Raimi and company in 2002. But before we dig into the biggest present under the tree, we sort through the Blue Plate Special-themed stocking stuffers, ranging from discussions on the forgotten gem Where the Buffalo Roam and contemporary classic The Matrix, inspired in part by the latter film's recent sequel/reboot The Matrix Resurrections. We finally tear through the Tobey Maguire-adorned wrapping paper to parse the myriad ways in which the character of Peter Parker and his various iterations remains among the greatest creations of comic book storytelling, mull how superhero films have evolved (or arguably devolved) over the past two decades-plus, and in general take multiple trips down memory lane to gloriously relive a childhood favorite. 'Tis the season, right? Feel free to skip to 2:43:21 for the beginning of our audio commentary.
