Episode 311: On October 21, 2021, a tragic accident occurred on the set of the low-budget old-west movie Rust, filmed on a New Mexico ranch. Wife, mother and Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, was fatally shot, and writer/director Joel Souza, 48, was injured. It was the lead actor and producer, Alec Baldwin, who was holding the prop gun that killed Hutchins and wounded Souza. Somehow, it contained a live round. Investigations also revealed other live rounds on set, which is never supposed to happen. Baldwin and the film's inexperienced armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 24, were charged with involuntary manslaughter. Dave Halls, 63, serving as the first assistant director on the film, entered a no-contest plea per a deal made with prosecutors, accepting responsibility for the misdemeanour offence of negligent use of a deadly weapon linked to the death of Halyna Hutchins. Numerous civil suits have also been filed, with accusations of negligence being levelled against several parties, including the production company, Hannah Gutierrez and actor Alec Baldwin. Ana Amortegui, ADFC DP, is a Colombian Director of Photography with a string of credits, including Resident Alien, Black Lightning, Into the Dark, Twenties S2, Gentrified, the web series, Heal and Quantum Leap S1 and S2 which is currently in production. Ana defines passion, determination and focus in her ambitions never letting anything or anyone stand in the way of her goals. And her journey from being a dancer in Colombia has taken her to the heart of Hollywood where women have to fight extra hard to break into the tough world of running camera. But Ana set herself a goal which she never lost sight of and worked her way up from Camera Assistant to DP. Born in Medellin, Colombia in 1979, Ana lost her mother Miriam when she was just seven years old so she was raised with her father Santiago and two brothers Jose and Javier. She proved herself a natural sportswoman, even playing softball for her country, but it was dancing that became an early passion and one that grew into her first career. Undeterred by her father's opposition to her dancing ambitions she appeased him with being a diligent student and studying electrical engineer. Her talent soon drew the attention of casting directors and producers and she was hired on Protagonists de Novela as their dance teacher. Whilst on set Ana began to develop an interest in camera work and would take every opportunity to learn new skills. Following Electrical Engineering School, Ana graduated from video production and filmmaking at the Art Institute of California in 2010. While she was in school she would work a variety of jobs to make a living until she established herself in the industry. Her determination and passion on set led her from one job to another and she recalls that the turning point coincided with getting pregnant with her daughter Mila. Her friend and fellow Cinematographer Gretchen Warthen says: “Within four years, she achieved everything she told me she was going to do. Ana's will and positive attitude is amazing. She inspires me always and I am so very proud of all she has accomplished.” During the actors strike Ana made use of the time studying a model of responsible parenting, as well as photography skills and face painting. Darby Irrgang is a Cinematographer, Camera Operator and Camera Assistant based in Philadelphia and New York. I first met Darby on the set of Soul Glo's music video for ‘Driponomics' directed by Dan White, Assistant Director by friend and guest of the show Marisa Dabice of Mannequin Pussy and Director of Photography our lovely guest, Darby Irrgang. We run in similar circles. 1 degree of separation. The music scene in Philly is one of the best music scenes I have ever seen. It is so supportive. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone used to work at the same coffee shop or restaurant and everyone who has a music project makes a music video. Darby has worked for many of your favorite musicians such as Kurt Vile, Soul Glo, Tigers Jaw, Sadie from Speedy Ortiz Her film photos are bomb too. Her photos of Rivka from Spirit of the Beehive for Radmad Jewelers are lit. In the words of Dan White and everyone in the photo and video industry, couldn't have done it without the best team. Richard moved to filmmaking, first as Production Designer, later Key Grip, Camera Assistant, and finally as a Cinematographer. Richard has shot over 25 feature films, usually European co-productions, both arthouse and more mainstream productions. His breakthrough came with the multi award-winning feature, Rosie. Richard's film work over the years included: Guernsey, Wolfsbergen, Nowhere Man, Little Black Spiders, Farewell To Fools, and Love & Friendship. Richard is president of the NSC and a member of the SBC and the EFA. Additionally, he is the initiator and co-editor of a book on contemporary cinematography called, Shooting Time.
Markus Mentzer (This is the End, Neighbors, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Garfunkel & Oates) has one of those jobs that when you explain it to someone who doesn't work in the film business it sounds both bizarre and insanely impossible...which it is. He's a 1st Camera Assistant (commonly known as a "Focus Puller") and among many other things he keeps the image you see in the movie theater in focus. I consider it to be the hardest and most thankless job on a film set and when you find someone like Markus (who is simply masterful at it) you can't help but wonder about how he does it. Makus's story is emblematic of what this podcast is all about. He's got one of those ludicrously tangential career paths that we love to hear about and will, no doubt, inspire those of you out there who want to follow your dream (or run away from your nightmare). Enjoy.
