Like most people on the internet, we here at the CuJo love a good food-centric social media account. But our arguable favorite at the moment is Snaxshot, a Substack, Instagram, and online community run by journalist and snack oracle Andrea Hernández. Through analyzing products like Graza olive oil and adaptogenic cookie dough and the bold colors and chunky fonts that make every new food brand look vaguely the same, Andrea probes the vast culinary zeitgeist in search of what it tells us about both our generation and this moment in culture. This week, she joins us to crack open the fascinating and often disorienting cultural politics of what she calls “gentrification food.” We get into the culinary and aesthetic hallmarks of this genre of food and beverage, what we millennials are broadcasting about ourselves when we consume it, and how our consumption choices became a form of status signaling in the first place. We also talk about the differences between how Millennials and Gen-Z relate to food (and how it's marketed to them accordingly); how artisanality became a mass-market concept; and why chain restaurants like Olive Garden and Cheesecake Factory are having a moment among young people. Join us as we uncover the economic and technological forces percolating beneath the surface of contemporary culture.Subscribe to Snaxshot on Substack Follow Snaxshot on IGRecommended reads by Andrea“American Snaxboi” “Millennial Metamucil”“For the love of chains” This is a public episode. You love where you live and locals are worried the suburb's about to be ‘gentrified'. It can be a good thing and a bad thing. Great news if you own your home, but not good news if you rent and rents are about to skyrocket. You'll be forced to move to a suburb further away from your friends, work and social network. In this episode of the Briefing we're joined by William Thackway, who has worked on a machine learning model to predict gentrification with UNSW City Futures Research Centre. He'll tell you how to know if your suburb is about to be gentrified. TFG crew is together again, discussing artisanal coffee spots... Nah, we are talking about gentrification, the loss of the third place, and your current buying opportunity. Since change is a universal constant, why not get in on the front end and enjoy? Can gentrification be a good thing? First, let's define it.Gentrification is a housing, economic, and health issue that affects a community's history and culture and reduces social capital. It often shifts a neighborhood's characteristics (e.g., racial/ethnic composition and household income) by adding new stores and resources in previously run-down neighborhoods. This structure allows the wealthy to put their children in their well-funded public schools while leaving low-income families and students concentrated on their own, usually under-resourced schools. Among a myriad of other issues which include displacement, cultural erasure, and a spike in the cost of living, especially for underserved communities. Some of the benefits of gentrification include reduced crime rates, improved infrastructure and economic growth.

Ana Amortegui, ADFC DP, is a Colombian Director of Photography with a string of credits, including Resident Alien, Black Lightning, Into the Dark, Twenties S2, Gentrified, the web series, Heal and Quantum Leap S1 and S2 which is currently in production. Ana defines passion, determination and focus in her ambitions never letting anything or anyone stand in the way of her goals. And her journey from being a dancer in Colombia has taken her to the heart of Hollywood where women have to fight extra hard to break into the tough world of running camera. But Ana set herself a goal which she never lost sight of and worked her way up from Camera Assistant to DP. Born in Medellin, Colombia in 1979, Ana lost her mother Miriam when she was just seven years old so she was raised with her father Santiago and two brothers Jose and Javier. She proved herself a natural sportswoman, even playing softball for her country, but it was dancing that became an early passion and one that grew into her first career. Undeterred by her father's opposition to her dancing ambitions she appeased him with being a diligent student and studying electrical engineer. Her talent soon drew the attention of casting directors and producers and she was hired on Protagonists de Novela as their dance teacher. Whilst on set Ana began to develop an interest in camera work and would take every opportunity to learn new skills. Following Electrical Engineering School, Ana graduated from video production and filmmaking at the Art Institute of California in 2010. While she was in school she would work a variety of jobs to make a living until she established herself in the industry. Her determination and passion on set led her from one job to another and she recalls that the turning point coincided with getting pregnant with her daughter Mila. Her friend and fellow Cinematographer Gretchen Warthen says: “Within four years, she achieved everything she told me she was going to do. Ana's will and positive attitude is amazing. She inspires me always and I am so very proud of all she has accomplished.” During the actors strike Ana made use of the time studying a model of responsible parenting, as well as photography skills and face painting. The Bureau of Queer Art, Contemporary Queer and Allied Artists from Art Gallery Studios Mexico City
Adam David Bencomo is a photographic artist currently based out of Baltimore, Maryland. Adam came to us in 2020 presenting a unique perspective on the queer bodies of larger men. His humor and light are threaded throughout his different series of photographs and give a perspective that welcomes all types of men into the queer world. Adam identifies as male-ish. Adam uses both they/them/their and he/him/his pronouns. They are in the process of dismantling toxic masculinity and all the negative traits that have come with what it means to “be a man.” Their work deals with a variety of subjects including but not limited to queer identity and subcultures, memorialism, gentrification, public art interaction, human consumption, and human usage.Currently, Adam has been focusing on queer subcultures and what it means to identify as a queer person of color. Additionally, they have come to celebrate radical body acceptance in queer culture by humanizing bodies that do not fit the mold of what is considered traditionally “good-looking.” They create queer art by humanizing their subjects while preserving the unique cultures to which they belong. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/micheal-swank/message

Laugh and learn in a collage of conversation with 'Chef' - Matthew 'Chef' Kwatinetz, Senior Director of Nevada Operations and Board Member of Burning Man Project. He shares with Stuart about the ongoing work to convert our Nevada properties into year-round hubs for bringing Burning Man culture into the world. So much more than an infrastructure project, Chef's team is busy upgrading Gerlach's power and internet, helping locals and staff develop skills, opening up new employment opportunities, and visioning a maker space for Black Rock City creators. They examine the art of urban planning. They celebrate tradition. They explore what's possible beyond our ephemeral city. They imagine what it could look like when Black Rock City spills out of its physical and temporal borders into places beyond the dry lakebed, engaging year-round with art, convenings, and teachings, and living life more secure and expressed.
