On Today is the Greatest, CJ proposes a new national holiday for bringing Super Bowl party leftovers to work. Spenny gets to work assembling a submission for an official new holiday. Madeline from Austin Monthly magazine stops by the show to discuss their annual singles' party. CJ explores his sordid past and how he ended up in the magazine himself. And has Madeline ever attended one of these events herself???? FIND OUT. LISTEN. Oh, and CJ finds a list of most expensive LEGO figures and kits. Apparently he owns some of them. Not sure why you'd announce that to the world, but okay. Let's rob him (let's please not do that)! Support the show: https://www.101x.com/cjSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Megan Kimble is the former executive editor of The Texas Observer and has written for The New York Times, Texas Monthly, and The Guardian. Her new book is City Limits: Infrastructure, Inequality, and the Future of America's Highways. “I have never lived in a city that was not wrapped in highways. It's hard for me to imagine anything else. And I think that's true for a lot of people today. ... [But] we have known since the origins of the interstate highways program that building highways through cities doesn't fix traffic. And yet we keep doing it. To me, that really fueled a lot of the book. In this special edition, we talk round-table style with three of the hard-working volunteers behind making the 10th Anniversary Celebration a success: Jamie Beck, heading up the Agent Pitch and Query Letter happenings, Wendy Rossi, interim co-chair of the event (which means her fingerprints are pretty much everywhere), and Erin Quinn-Kong, in charge of our great line-up of guest speakers and workshop facilitators. We discuss what's in store for the attendees, the long-term planning as well as behind-the-scenes details (nametags, anyone?) that went into making an event like this happen, and what each is most looking forward to next week as 350 members meet in real life in Chicago. Jamie Beck is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of 18 novels, which have been translated into multiple languages and have sold more than three million copies worldwide. Critics at Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist have respectively called her work "smart," "uplifting," and "entertaining." In addition to writing novels, she enjoys dancing around the kitchen while cooking and hitting the slopes in Vermont and Utah. Above all, she is a grateful wife and mother to a very patient, supportive family. Erin Quinn-Kong is an award-winning writer and editor based in Austin, TX. Currently the managing editor of Texas Highways, Erin has also been an editor at Austin Monthly, Us Weekly, and Allure. She's been writing fiction since 2019, and her debut novel, HATE FOLLOW, will be released in October 2024 by William Morrow. Born and raised in Missouri, with a three-year detour to California, Erin is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. When she's not writing, you'll most likely find her on an adventure with her foodie husband and their two delightful children. Wendy Rossi is the Membership Director for WFWA, a role she's been in for almost three years. Prior to joining the Board, Wendy helped to facilitate several online activities for the organization, which led to the opportunity to be nominated for Board service. Alan Keith Barley is the Co-owner and Principal of Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture. Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture was founded in 1989 by principals Alan K. Barley and Peter L. Pfeiffer. Bringing different strengths to bear, Alan's ability to hear what clients want and his ability to use innovative ideas to create elegant spaces compliment Peter's strong building-science background and practical approach to construction. BPA is a LEED-certified firm that practices Green By Design. Believing that 90% of effective green building decisions happen in the first 10% of the design process supports the importance of regionally appropriate design decisions and building systems integration. Rather than simply making sustainable material choices we go beyond the present green building paradigm.Alan's career began in San Antonio, working for local firms while an architectural student at San Antonio College. He was fortunate to work with well-known architects Richard Mogas and Joe Stubblefield who mentored him for several years. Under their tutelage, he developed a keen appreciation for utilizing regionally appropriate natural materials which has imbued his work with a distinctively central Texas flare. This background reinforces the Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture commitment to the number one premise of sustainable architecture – regionally appropriate design.Alan continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1985 with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree. To add depth to his commercial experience, Alan joined the Austin Group Architects in 1986 where he helped design and produce several commercial offices, warehouse structures, business parks, and apartment complexes. He was one of the principal designers in the Cedar Park City Hall competition, winning first place.Venturing on his own in 1987, Alan completed projects for noted games software designer Richard Garriott, and the World of Pentecost Sanctuary expansion. He joined forces with Peter Pfeiffer in 1989 to form Barley|Pfeiffer Architecture. On Wednesday, January 9th, 1980, in the North Loop neighborhood of Austin, a man witnessed a young woman's abduction. The following day, the body of that woman, 25-year-old University of Texas student Susan Leigh Wolfe, was found slain in an alley more than 4 miles away. Because the witness to the abduction was in the auto business, he was able to give Austin Police Detectives what might have been the best vehicle description the department had ever seen. But it didn't matter; though the car had been seen by folks in the neighborhood before, as well as elsewhere in town, it was apparently never seen again. Susan Wolfe's murder case went cold. When Austin Police pinned a few of their murders on Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Elwood Toole, murders they could not have committed, the witness in Susan's case had made it virtually impossible to pin her murder on them, luckily. But unfortunately, her case faded into obscurity as the years and decades passed. If you have any information about the murder of Susan Leigh Wolfe, please contact the Austin Police Cold Case & Missing Persons Unit through the department's homicide tipline at (512)477-3588 or by calling the capital area crime stoppers hotline at (512)472-8477To show your support for Fort Worth cold case victims and their families, please consider joining Thaw the Cold Cases on April 29th, 2023 in the city's downtown. On Thursday, November 27th, 1986, 28-year-old Connie Jane Bibb returned home after a holiday dinner at a friend's house. It was her senior year at the University of Texas Austin as a special education major, and the religious woman looked forward to a life of teaching and missionary work. But senselessly, her life was cut short. All nine of Connie's roommates were either attending the Longhorns V. Aggies game on campus, or out of town for the holiday, leaving her alone at the house Thanksgiving night. An intruder broke in, his intentions unknown, and after a violent struggle, Connie Bibb was murdered. It was a time when the cops were doing everything they could to suppress information about the Hyde Park Rapist, endangering North Austin's female population, and the troubling rise in the city's crime rate. They could not, of course hide Connie's killing, but the local media's attention span turned away quickly, and the case has been seldom reported on since. If you have any information about the murder of Connie Jane Bibb, please contact the Austin Police Cold Case & Missing Persons Unit through the department's homicide tipline at (512)477-3588 or by calling the capital area crime stoppers hotline at (512)472-8477Please consider donating to the go fund me for Leon Laureles. Welcome back to the Period Chats Podcast! Today we talk with Madeline Hollern about her experience with egg-freezing. Madeline is the Executive Director and Brand Ambassador at Austin Monthly, and I had the privilege of meeting her at a Free People Movement event where we struck up a conversation about fertility and egg-freezing. Madeline has known for a long time that she wants kids. After a recent break-up, she began to look in to the science behind egg-freezing. Egg-freezing is also known as mature oocyte cryopreservation, and is a method that's usually used to preserve a person's ability to become pregnant in the future. Eggs are harvested from the ovaries so they can later be used in the process of in vitro fertilization as needed. I was interested to hear the details of how Madeline's journey was emotionally, financially (her health insurance didn't cover any of it) and physically. She shares that in some of these ways it was taxing, but that she would absolutely do it again. First, she was tested for her AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) levels, then given an ultrasound, and eventually given the opportunity to sign up when she was ready. Madeline had a best friend that had just gone through the process, and some chips seemed to be falling in to place, so on 2-22-22 she felt like it was the perfect time to sign up and get started. People born with eggs have a set amount of them for life. They usually release once a month, and things like being on birth control don't preserve them. While we can support the health of the eggs we have by nutrition and lifestyle, we can't add to the specific number our bodies have. Ever the journalist, Madeline audio recorded the instructions during her visits to make sure she was doing her self-administration correctly. This included shots in the stomach area twice a day. She also went in for blood testing every 3 days and ultrasounds to check the follicles (eggs) which have to be the right size to be used in the freezing process. Madeline ended up having to go through the preparatory stage twice, because the first time only 2 retrievable eggs were visible in the ultrasounds. The second attempt included pre-treating with estrogen, and the day of the procedure they ended up with 8 eggs. In this episode, we also touch on the topics of bedside manner, the importance of having community and support, and the dedication and schedule diligence it takes to keep up with having your eggs frozen. Madeline shares that she now has more peace of mind knowing she has more options for the future. I'm super thankful for this educational and inspiring conversation! We are thrilled to talk with author May Cobb about planning your author financial life, working with multiple agents, writing lifelike sociopaths, and the changing trends of “likability” in characters. We loved reading My Summer Darlings—it really is the perfect summer read—and hearing about the story behind the story. May says: I grew up in the piney woods of East Texas where MY SUMMER DARLINGS, THE HUNTING WIVES and BIG WOODS are set. After college, I moved to San Francisco where I studied Victorian Literature for my Master's, and gravitated towards that era's detective novels, known as "sensation novels", such as Wilke Collins' THE WOMAN IN WHITE. I then lived in Los Angeles for a few years where I worked for filmmaker/writer Ron Shelton and his wife, the actress Lolita Davidovich. I currently live in Austin, Texas, with my husband and son where we enjoy traipsing around the area's many beautiful parks. I also enjoy napping, staring into space, making to-do lists for my to-do lists, shoveling cookies down my throat when I'm writing a particularly difficult scene (and even when I'm not), wearing my PJ's as often as I can get away with and collapsing into bed at the end of a day with a great book. I'm currently finishing a book about the late, jazz great, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a project which has been in the works for twenty years. Kirk was a human phenomenon—a multi-instrumentalist who was best known for his miraculous ability to play three saxophones simultaneously. During his brief life, he defied staggering odds—from blindness, to prejudice, to a paralyzing stroke—in order to play the music that came to him through dreams. His story is what made me want to become a writer. My writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The Rumpus, Austin Monthly, and Texas Highways Magazine. My proudest achievement remains clinching 1st place in the UIL competition for Personal Writing when I was in the 4th grade. Learn more about May here: https://www.maycobb.com/

Austin-based guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl “Buffalo” Nichols wants to remind folks of the value of the blues as a cultural art form. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” The self-described music nerd considers Delta blues, Chicago blues, West African Malian guitar rhythms, and the African ancestry of the clawhammer banjo in his sonic experimentation and ongoing study of chords and riffs. Nichols, who lived in Milwaukee for most of his life save for his overseas travels, is Fat Possum Records' first blues signing in nearly 20 years and “is grateful to be part of the label's legacy of blues music that also includes Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside,” (Austin Monthly). For his remote performances, Buffalo Nichols wields both a hollow body Fender guitar and a resonator-style guitar, as he plays tunes from his self-titled record. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “These Things”, “How to Love,” “Lost and Lonesome” “These Things”: “How to Love”: “Lost and Lonesome”:

My guest today is thriller writer May Cobb, author of The Hunting Wives. Samantha Bailey, author of Woman on the Edge, says, "Wickedly dark, juicy, and addictive, as if the characters from Big Little Lies and Desperate Housewives moved into the same upscale, twisted neighborhood." AJ Finn, author of The Woman in the Window, says, "This fearless, faultless novel confirms May Cobb as one of the most original crime novelists at work today." With an MA in literature from San Francisco State University, her essays and interviews have appeared in the Washington Post, the Rumpus, Edible Austin, and Austin Monthly. Her debut novel, Big Woods, won multiple awards. A Texas native, she lives in Austin with her family. Please welcome an up-and-coming superstar thriller writer and my new friend, May Cobb.

Listen as Sonya Coté, Executive Chef and Kayce Braden, Projects Manager tell us about the farm to table experience of their restaurant Eden East Austin, why it is important for consumers to care about where their food comes from, and how they are doing their part in building a better food system. About Eden East Austin: Located in East Austin, Eden East is a true farm-to-table dining experience. The restaurant serves a monthly prix fixe menu every weekend and an a la carte brunch on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Thursday, Eden East offers an a la carte dinner paired with live music or a DJ. Each month, chefs develop a menu based on the most vibrant seasonal ingredients from the farm, as well as local farms and ranches. Website: https://edeneastaustin.com/ About Sonya Coté: Sonya Coté is a perfect blend of chef, artist and storyteller. With a background in art and graphic design, Coté has had quite a vibrant career. Even as her culinary endeavors expand, she remains an artist. Each new plate is her canvas that tells its own story. As many Austin diners know, Coté is the free spirit behind Hillside Farmacy and Eden East, the latter being located on an urban farm that her and her partner David are currently maintaining. At Eden East, patrons can dine al fresco under the stars on a menu that is based on what’s in season on the farm and as well as shop produce and local goods at farmers market. Coté’s story begins in a coastal community in Rhode Island, where she grew up with a love for camping and an affinity for cooking. Her restaurants reflect her love of the outdoors and all things local. She first left Rhode Island for Dallas in 1989, being “fascinated by the Wild West and its stereotypes, but living in the city, I was surprised that people didn’t know their neighbors.” Since then she has planted roots in Austin and created an amazing community. Coté has received numerous accolades, including recognition as one of Marie Claire’s “Women on Top. She competed on Food Network’s “Chopped”. Her restaurant Eden East was named one of Austin Monthly’s “Best New Restaurants.” Soon after, Coté was named one of Tribeza’s “People of the Year.” About Kaycee Braden: Kaycee Braden has a passion for food. From her earliest memories to her current daily activities, she knew she could find an outlet for her passion and how food is shared, sold & grown, within the food community. The recent “Farm to Table” movement became a way for Kaycee to share what she had learned through her travels & help grow this community in Austin by bringing healthy food resources & alternatives to “big ag”. Fresh faced & starry eyed, she started her journey into the food scene by earning her Permaculture Design Certification with an emphasis on community development and ethno botanical horticulture in her early twenties. Wanting to dig deeper into learning more about food justice Kaycee found herself traveling across the globe study in depth small agriculture and the effects of the green revolution in Rajasthan, India. She then went on to graduate with her BA from Evergreen State College in sustainable agriculture & community development. She then set out to begin her life pursuing her passion. Kaycee is a proud Texas native, a world traveler who has resided in many places. She has recently come back home to Texas to bring us her experiences and love of food culture to the everyday operations of a restaurant located in the heart of Austin. Austin Texas has quickly become a busy, thriving food community with deep roots. Through the years, she worked through each department of the restaurant including kitchen, then ultimately ending up as the General Manager of Eden East.
Striking a Balance Between Business and Creativity It’s pretty safe to say that one thing Danielle Benson does not lack, is drive. Beginning her career as a professional stylist, over ten years ago, Benson put herself through cosmetology school — while working full time. As a locally renowned stylist, her work has been on display at numerous fashion shows. She been named a “Best Stylist” in the Beauty Issue of Austin Monthly and a finalist for Austin 40 Under 40. And … It wasn’t quickly after having her first child that she recognized her life lacked a measure of balance. So, what did she do? Well, she bought her own salon, of course. Danielle negotiated a deal for the rights to the Downtown location of Wild Orchid Salon. That one location quickly blossomed into two salons and then three. Has Benson achieved work-life balance? You’ll have to listen to this interview to find out. But one thing is certain, Danielle is committed to blazing her own path. In this episode of Voices of Impact, we discuss the idea of living your dreams out loud. We talk about the importance of creating an environment of acceptance and growth. And Danielle shares why she is so passionate about supporting local organizations like Lifeworks and Dell Children’s Blood and Cancer Center. Grab the audio, links and show notes for Danielle’s interview at: http://www.VoicesOfImpact.com/Danielle-Benson

Damon Orion interviews Rak Razam, experiential journalist and the writer-producer of the critically acclaimed shamanic documentary, Aya: Awakenings. They discuss the nature of the indigenous shamanic realm that is coming back into the Western understanding, the role of jaguars in the archetypal landscape, and the difference between the two world paradigms and how they define altered states. The role of western media makers in mapping the invisible landscape is defined, as is the healing benefits of entheogens and re-connecting to spirit, and the deep mystical profundity of the 5-Me0 immersion.
