Belief from former Black Cap Chris Cairns that Will Young should be playing over Devon Conway in New Zealand's test series against England. The Central Districts batter - who was named player of the series in the historic 3-nil whitewash of India last month - made way for a returning Kane Williamson in the red-ball squad. Cairns says coach Gary Stead made a rare error by axing Young. The second test in Wellington begins on Friday. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I first met Tony Lee when I had the honour to be guest commentator at the 1996 Wellington Cup meeting. In preparing to call a couple of races on the big programme, I received every possible courtesy from the NZ ace. Tony went out of his way to help me through a plethora of strange colours and horse names. I tuned in to hear his description of the recent Wellington Cup won by Mary Louise- his broadcasting swan song after four decades of wonderful service to NZ racing. I called Tony a few days after his Trentham send off to record this tribute to a man whose race calls whetted the appetites of generations of racing fans. He recalls the warmth of the farewell afforded him by the racing industry. Tony says his last Wellington Cup was a tricky race to call. He pays tribute to trainer Robbie Paterson and jockey Craig Grylls who bagged a Gr 1 double on the day. The veteran caller outlines the reasons for his surprise retirement. Tony reminisces about the 1996 Wellington Cup meeting when he and I worked together for the first and only time. The 65 year old looks back on childhood days on the family farm at Rongotea near Palmerston North. He says his late brother Craig was the one to introduce him to horse racing. Tony goes back to early days as a sound recordist with a local news crew. He says he loved the buzz of the media world. He talks of his admiration for the late Peter Kelly, New Zealand's favourite race caller of the day. Tony looks back on his race calling debut at the Hutt Park trots. Lee became famous for the passion he generated in his race descriptions. He talks about the development of his style. Tony talks about Castletown's third Wellington Cup win in 1994. The words he used in the closing stages of his call are still repeated by racing fans of all ages. He pays tribute to the remarkable two miler Castletown, one of the country's greatest ever stayers. The ace commentator talks of Xcellent's memorable win in the 2005 Mudgway Stakes, and the call that people still talk about. Horse lover Lee says he fell in love with Starcraft the moment he first saw him in the Hastings parade yard before the 2004 Mudgway Stakes. Tony talks of his affection for the Hastings track and runs through some of the other racecourses in the Central Districts. Regrettably he saw little of northern trained Sunline, but he did get to call her final race in NZ- the 2002 Mudgway Stakes. He says local fans gave her an unforgettable send off. Tony acknowledges the deeds of a handful of other special horses. He talks of the 2012 disagreement with TAB Trackside which saw him walk away from his plum role. Eager to test the water out of NZ he spent two years with the Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia. He enjoyed the experience. Tony recalls the twist of fate that would send him back to his old job. He pays tribute to some of the NZ trainers he's admired over the years. In talking about jockeys he relates a funny story about the day at Otaki when he and trainer Alexander Fieldes put on an exhibition gallop. Tony talks about a business venture outside of racing. He and wife Briar run the Trax Bar and Cafe at Wellington railway station. It's a laid back trip down memory lane with a man who's been a great friend to NZ racing.

On this episode of the show, Binksy, Baldy and Stu look back at an action-packed week at the IPL, which saw plenty of runs, some very fast bowling and, unfortunately, too many injuries. We also discuss the Black Caps v Sri Lanka series, the conclusion of the Plunket Shield and New Zealand's upcoming tour to Pakistan. The IPL has started with a bang - Virat Kohli sixes, Mark Wood rockets, Jos Buttler catches and incredible crowds - but a serious injury to Kane Williamson looks likely to rule him out of the ODI World Cup later in 2023. We discuss the implications for the Black Caps, whether Hardik Pandya should be seriously considered as India's white-ball captain, if Kyle Mayers has springs inside his bat and whether the Punjab Kings can maintain their impressive start to the tournament. In the second segment of the show we discuss the white-ball series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, which has so far been dominated by a largely second-string Black Caps' side. We talk about Rachin Ravindra's composure, tally up the gains from our skyrocketing Will Young stock and discuss the squads for the upcoming T20 and ODI tour to Pakistan. To round out the show, we touch on the strong finish to the NZ domestic season for Central Districts, a win for NZ A against the Aussies and wonder if Rory Burns running down the wicket is a sign of things to come in the County Championship. We'll be back again soon to discuss more news from the IPL and the Black Caps' tour to Pakistan. The Black Caps have named a left-arm orthodox, right-arm swing heavy squad to face England for two tests in June.As anticipated, 21-year-old Wellington all-rounder Rachin Ravindra is the closest thing to a bolter in the 20-strong touring party named by selectors Gary Stead and Gavin Larsen. He will join provincial teammate Devon Conway and Otago's Jacob Duffy as the only uncapped members of the squad.Earning recalls are Doug Bracewell and Ajaz Patel, with the former subject to a fitness test on his hip before being cleared to fly. It marks Bracewell's first return to the team since 2016. Colin de Grandhomme (ankle) and Ross Taylor (hamstring) have also been selected pending fitness tests that both are expected to pass. The unluckiest player to miss selection is Auckland's Glenn Phillips, a white-ball dynamo who rose to the red-ball occasion when scoring a half century on test debut against Australia last year.He has added some fairly raw off-spin to his repertoire but the selectors have instead opted for three left-armers in Patel, Mitchell Santner and Ravindra. If selected to play, Ravindra would be the youngest New Zealand test player since Ish Sodhi debuted at 20 against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2013.In this his third and most successful professional season, the left-hander notched twin hundreds for New Zealand A against the touring West Indies and recently returned from a dislocated shoulder to record his first Plunket Shield century, followed by six wickets in Wellington's final-round draw against Auckland."Rachin's been earmarked as a star of the future since his Under-19 days and we've been really encouraged by the advancement in his game this season, with both bat and ball," coach Gary Stead said. "He's obviously an opening option, but also has the ability to bat in the middle order which combined with his left-arm finger spin make him a great asset to our squad."Jacob's been a consistent performer on the domestic circuit and his ability to swing the ball made him a particularly compelling option with a Dukes ball in English conditions."Swinging the ball away from the right-handers is seen as a critical component in English conditions, hence the selection of a posse of right-arm fast-medium pacers, including Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson, de Grandhomme, Duffy, Bracewell and Matt Henry, with Daryl Mitchell also capable of finding movement in the right conditions. The out-and-out pace of Lockie Ferguson must have been tempting, but Stead said it was too early after recovering from a stress fracture and his primary focus would be on the T20 World Cup in India later this year. All 14 players who featured in the home test summer have been selected, while Conway comes in after a prolific start to his international white-ball career.De Grandhomme and Patel return after injuries robbed them of chances this season, while Central Districts' Bracewell, listed as an all-rounder, returns close to five years after his last test against South Africa at Pretoria.Bracewell enjoyed a consistent Plunket Shield, where he averaged 26 with the ball and 43 with the bat, and claimed nine wickets for New Zealand A at 19.6."We're confident he'll enjoy bowling on English pitches in June," Stead said."Colin's injury is progressing well and we're hopeful he will begin running again shortly. We'll monitor him closely over the next few weeks to ensure he's on target."It's been pleasing to see Ajaz back playing consistently since missing the early part of the season and he's proven in the past what he can do if the ball is turning."The squad will hold two training camps in early May before departing for England in two groups on May 16 and 17.Players involved in the IPL will be managed on a case-by-case basis depending on when their team exits the tournament. The two England tests take place at Lord's starting June 2 and Edgbaston on June 10. The squad will then be trimmed to 15 for the World Test Championship Final at the Ageas...
New Zealand named their squad to play the season-ending T20I series against Bangladesh and as was widely tipped, it will see a potential debut for explosive Wellington opener Finn Allen. The right-hander was at home in Auckland with extended family who gathered to say goodbye before he prepared to leave for the Indian Premier League, when he saw he had a call from Black Caps selector-coach Gary Stead. He left the room to take the call."I came out with a pretty big grin on my face," he said. "It's awesome to get that opportunity. I mean, who doesn't want to play for their country?"It caps a meteoric rise for the 21-year-old who a year ago was languishing on the fringes of the Auckland squad. Since then he has signed for Wellington, set records in the Super Smash, was called up as injury cover for Martin Guptill in the Black Caps, earned an IPL contract and now has a chance to prove himself at international level ahead of the World T20 in India this year."I'm so grateful to Cricket Wellington for giving me the opportunities," he said. The gratitude would be mutual.Allen was a pivotal part of Wellington's successful Super Smash side, scoring a competition-best 512 runs at an average of 56.9 and an eye-popping strike rate of 193.9.His approach is based on aggression, so he likes to call it "intent" and putting the new-ball bowlers under the cosh from ball one."For me [the key] is the simplicity of what I'm trying to do when I'm out there," he said. "Keeping my head as clear I can and literally just focusing on watching the ball and trying to hit it as hard as I can."His numbers paint a very modern picture. While Allen averages a touch over 48 in T20s, he hovers around 25 in List A cricket and under 20 in limited first-class opportunities since making his debut in 2018. This month he was signed by Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Australia's Josh Philippe. At a shade under $40,000 his contract will not put him in the millionaire's club but it was still a stunning opportunity for a player yet to wear national colours at senior level.Adam Milne will be more familiar to fans, having played 61 times for his country across the white ball formats.Milne, 28, made his debut for the Black Caps in 2010 as a teenage tearaway but the rigours of flat-out fast bowling on a slight frame have meant that injury has been a constant companion.Of late Milne has become a specialist T20 bowler, turning in consistent performances for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash. He has a $670,000 contract with the Mumbai Indians for the upcoming IPL and has been training with Central Districts since leaving managed isolation.Six regulars, including Kane Williamson are missing. He is joined on the sidelines for this series by Mitchell Santner, Kyle Jamieson, Jimmy Neesham, Tim Seifert and Trent Boult.Devon Conway will have the added responsibility of taking the gloves, while Will Young has been included as a top order option.Speedster Lockie Ferguson has recovered from a stress fracture and returns."It's certainly been a season like no other and once again we've had to be pragmatic in our approach," selector Gavin Larsen said."The six guys who will miss this series are incumbents in our T20 side and the decision to give them some time at home with family before they embark on a long stint in India was principally made with their welfare in mind."We're also very aware of the need to give others opportunities in a World Cup year."NZ squad to face Bangladesh: Tim Southee (c), Martin Guptill, Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Will Young, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi, Todd Astle, Hamish Bennett.text by Dylan Cleaver, NZ Herald

Will Young will become New Zealand test cricketer number 280 in the first test against the West Indies in Hamilton tomorrow.Long touted as one of the unluckiest players never to don a black cap in any format, the Central Districts batsman appears set to finally get his chance tomorrow. He will open and Tom Blundell will drop to number six in place of B-J Watling who did not train with his injured hamstring.Meanwhile, West Indies cricket captain Jason Holder has been presented with the “New Zealand illusion” when it comes to pitches. The latest example comes courtesy of an emerald Seddon Park ahead of today’s first test of the series starting at 11am.Holder’s done his homework and expects the pitch will flatten out.Listen above as Lesley Murdoch previews the game with Kate Hawkesby
Tom Blundell has gone down in the record books for becoming just the second batsman in New Zealand first-class history to be given out for obstructing the field. The dismissal, for 101, came after a long wait for both teams to get on the park on the final day of the Wellington Firebirds-Otago Volts Plunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve, after stormy weather stalled play until almost 5pm.The Volts had been kept waiting for the chance to take the final three wickets to win their first Plunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve since 2003, while the Firebirds still had two top order batsmen in Black Cap Blundell and concussion substitute Andrew Fletcher to attempt to chase down a further 94 needed for a home victory. But just seven balls into the resumption, Blundell's rare dismissal triggered a quick demise for the hosts as Jacob Duffy snatched eight wickets for the match in a special 84-run victory for the side. The denouement was also remarkable for the sights in the middle, the Volts wearing blue and gold beanies in the frigid conditions, following horizontal rain earlier in the day.The sole previous instance of an obstructing the field dismissal in the scorecard of a New Zealand or Plunket Shield first-class match was in December 1953 when Canterbury tailender Johnny Hayes was dismissed at Christchurch's now demolished Lancaster Park against Central Districts; and yesterday's instance was the first since the handled ball rules were tweaked in 2017.For the Volts, it was a well executed victory that catapulted the southerners from fifth to third equal on the points table. It was also their second Plunket Shield victory in four matches, after having beaten the Stags in Dunedin at the tail of last summer. It left the Firebirds as the only side yet to pocket a win heading into next week's fourth round, an egg the defending champions will be hoping to break against the undefeated Auckland Aces who will be next up at the Basin Reserve. The Volts now head south for their first home match, at Alexandra's Molyneux Park, against unbeaten competition frontrunners Canterbury.

It was a lot of fun this week when we were joined by Doggies veteran and their current skipper, Luke Habel. We spoke about what it's like being the leader of a young group, his thoughts on the season so far and how the team can improve, what it was like living with close mate and Doggies premiership star, Andrew Hayes and Luke dishes the dirt on some of his teammates and new coach, Jeff Andrews.
Andrew Bensley catches up with Central Districts trainer Chrissy Bambry about her five runners at Hawera on Saturday.
In this episode of the show we speak with incumbent Black Caps Test spinner Ajaz Patel. You'll hear about his journey from Auckland age-group seamer to international spinner in a relatively short amount of time, the hard work he put in with Dipak Patel and others to make that happen, his move to Central Districts, his dream debut against Pakistan and how he navigates the variety of roles a spinner can play in different locations and even within a game. We knew Ajaz was a hard worker, but came away from this chat with an enormous amount of respect for what he's achieved and the way he goes about his business - it really is a must listen for fans of the Black Caps and spin bowling in general. If you like what you hear, give us a like, follow, share or subscribe on all our channels (@toporderpod on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram) and a (5-Star!) review at your favourite podcast provider. It really helps others find the show. Thanks for listening.
Dipak Patel had a first-class career spanning more than 20 years, including over a decade for Worcestershire before moving to NZ and playing 37 Tests and 75 ODIs for his adopted country. Perhaps best known for opening the bowling in the 1992 World Cup, Dipak repeated the dose in 1993 to help spin NZ to a rare Test victory against Australia. Since his playing days, Dipak stayed in the game as a coach, including stints with Central Districts, NZ U-19 and Papua New Guinea. We talk about coming through the grades predominantly as a batsman, England ambitions, the move to NZ, a tough introduction to international cricket against an incredible West Indies side, the NZ tour to Pakistan in 1990, cutting off Dean Jones and opening the bowling at the 1992 World Cup, plus plenty more. Note: We recorded this interview in two sessions, and unfortunately the audio quality drops for the final 15-20 minutes.

The Black Caps have been hit by a double injury blow ahead of their second test against England, with Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme both being ruled out due to injury.Boult, who could only bowl one over on the final day of the Black Caps' win by an innings and 65 runs in Mount Maunganui, went for an MRI scan yesterday, which confirmed he had strained one of the muscles overlying his ribs on his right hand-side, but cleared him of any bone stress. He will miss the test starting on Friday at Seddon Park, as will de Grandhomme, who sustained a tear to his left lower abdominal muscle during the second innings, which saw him not bowl after lunch. The pair will begin rehabiliation with an aim to be fit for the Black Caps' first test against Australia in Perth on December 12, and Black Caps bowling coach Shane Jurgensen was hopeful both can recover in time."It's as good as what it could be, and hopefully they won't be out for too long."[Boult's injury] is quite a unique bowling injury that's not been seen much before, but fingers crossed it will be a quick rehab."We want them to be on the plane to go to Perth, so we're certainly working towards that, but the initial plan is really just rest and rehab."Northern Districts all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has been called into the test squad as de Grandhomme's replacement, and will join the Black Caps today along with Lockie Ferguson and Todd Astle, who have rejoined the test squad after being released to play domestic one-day cricket.Colin de Grandhomme (left) and Trent Boult (middle) have both been ruled out of the Black Caps' second test against England. Photo / GettyMitchell, who has played nine Twenty20 internationals for the Black Caps, hit an unbeaten 170 for Northern Districts in his last Plunket Shield match, and played for New Zealand A against England in their warm-up match, taking 2-34 and contributing scores of 19 not out and 22 with the bat.He most recently took 3-54 and hit an unbeaten 62 from 54 balls to lead ND to a one-day win over Central Districts on Monday.A powerful batsman with good technique who likes to hit the ball straight, Mitchell averages 35.6 with the bat in first-class cricket, and 33.5 with the ball, having taken 61 first-class wickets with his medium-pace offerings.Daryl Mitchell is in line for a test debut. Photo / PhotosportHe would be a like-for-like swap with de Grandhomme, though Black Caps coach Gary Stead could opt for an extra batsman in Tom Blundell, or play four seamers or two spinners, with Mitchell Santner promoted to bat at No 7.Jurgensen was certain Mitchell has the skills to replace de Grandhomme's all-round production."It's a really fantastic opportunity for Daryl, if he's selected for this test he'd probably take a similar role – I certainly think he's got the capability to do what Colin's been able to do."Boult's ailment seemingly opens up a spot for Ferguson to make his much-anticipated test debut in a seam bowling trio alongside Tim Southee and Neil Wagner, but with Matt Henry also an option, Jurgensen wasn't keen to make any assertions just yet."All options will be considered – [Henry] has done a really good job for the team and is a genuine new-ball bowler, and so is Lockie. We'll look at the pitch and see what our best lineup is."

Corporate compliance is increasingly becoming an important part of corporate culture and existence. However, there is a great deal of mystery around what compliance truly means, why it’s important, and what needs to be done to meet legal guidelines. I’m joined by Jim McGinnis, a member of the Antitrust and Competition Practice Group in Sheppard Mullin’s San Francisco office. Jim was formerly an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern and Central Districts of California, serving in the Criminal Division from 1984-1988. He specializes in complex litigation and white collar criminal matters with a focus on antitrust issues, often in the international arena. What We Discuss in this Episode: What does compliance mean in the corporate setting? What areas of corporate existence does compliance touch upon? Why is it important for corporations to have compliance plans? The Yates Memo and what it aimed to achieve How can a compliance program help protect against exposure to liability? Is there greater compliance when the consequences of noncompliance are criminal penalties as opposed to civil ones? What is the biggest challenge facing multinationals when it comes to compliance programs? Are companies expected to understand the laws and regulations of every country they’re doing business in? How clear is the framework and guidelines for setting up a compliance program? What are certain actions an organization must establish in order to meet the compliance requirements? What is “tone at the top” and how does it affect corporate compliance? Some mistakes Jim has seen throughout his years working in this space Resources Mentioned: The Yates Memo Department of Justice – US Sentencing Guidelines Section 8B2.1 – Effective Compliance and Ethics Program Contact Information: Jim's Sheppard Mullin attorney profile jmcginnis@sheppardmullin.com Thank you for listening!
