This is episode 34 of the Love, Hope, Lyme podcast. Fred Diamond's popular book, "Love, Hope, Lyme: What Family Members, Partners, and Friends Who Love a Chronic Lyme Survivor Need to Know" offers those who love someone with persistent or chronic Lyme ideas and tips to support this beloved person. It also helps Lyme survivors know how to ask for support. On today's episode, Fred interviews Dr. Neil Nathan to discuss his new book "The Sensitive Patient's Healing Guide: Top Experts Offer New Insights and Treatments for Environmental Toxins, Lyme Disease, and Emfs." When Fred was first discovering the trauma related to tick-borne diseases, one of the first books he read was Dr. Nathan's classic "Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Chronic Environmental Illness." It helped him understand how difficult mold allergies can be to treat and how much interplay there is with Lyme disease. Dr. Nathan discussed many of the complications sensitive patients go through in finding treatments to get healthy. Fred digs deep so that Lyme survivors can find some peace and suggestions on how to get treatment, and, as he always does, how those who love and want to support someone they love with Lyme disease can support them. If someone you love has been afflicted with Lyme disease, watch this podcast now. If you have Lyme disease, listen for ways to get the support you need. The e-version of Fred's book is always free for Lyme survivors. Just reach out to Fred on Facebook or LinkedIn. Back in the 80s, he began seeing an increasing number of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue cases, but because the medical world was unfamiliar with this condition, patients were sent to therapy. From there, he started connecting the dots to conditions such as mold toxicity and started helping his clients, even though it wasn't the "norm" in the medical world. From there, his journey into mold and understanding how it affects the body took off. This includes studying with Dr. Shoemaker. 6:00: Dr. Nathan goes through his other books and what sparked his desire to keep releasing information about mold, healing, and treatments. 9:30: Dr. Nathan discusses his idea of how many individuals are suffering from mold exposure, his experience in treatment, and the common symptoms he's seen. He goes over mold allergy and mold toxicity as well as the difference between the two. He discusses the influence of genetics and the various other components that result in adverse health reactions. 14:00: Dr. Nathan addresses the misconception that since mold exists in nature, it's no problem for our health. He also discusses mycotoxins, a toxic byproduct of some mold species.16:30: Dr. Nathan discusses why he agrees to disagree with Dr. Shoemaker on the idea that it's not mold growth in a home that's causing health issues, but actinomyces. Michael discusses his related experience and opinions as well. 21:45: Dr. Nathan discusses his new book, Energetic Diagnosis, and the motivation behind writing it. 24:00: Dr. Nathan discusses his short ebook, Mold and Mycotoxins, and its recent rewrite. 34:45: Dr. Nathan discusses his experience with a urine analysis being inconclusive even though the individual is suffering from toxicity and delves into the explanations behind it. 37:00: Dr. Nathan explains how crucial remediation and mold avoidance are in helping patients heal from exposure. You can get better, but you can't heal in the environment that's making you ill. 46:30: Dr. Nathan discusses the need for more studies, technology, and research funding to help better understand mold exposure and the impact it has on health.53:00: Dr. Nathan explains the importance of being patient while healing from mold toxicity because it can take years. But, it is treatable. To Learn More About Dr. Neil Nathan:https://neilnathanmd.com/https://www.amazon.com/Neil-Nathan/e/B004IW6A5A%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_shareThe Mold Medic https://www.themoldmedic.com/https://www.allamericanrestoration.com/

Why You Should Listen:  In this episode, you will learn about the evaluation of personal energies using intuition and medical devices to diagnose and treat complex medical illnesses. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Neil Nathan.  Neil Nathan, MD has been a Board-Certified Family Physician and is a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Holistic Medicine.  He recently retired from clinical practice after nearly 5 decades of patient care.  From the time that he began medical school at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine, it has always been his passion to try to help as many of his patients as possible.  He was never satisfied with sending patients home with the cliché: “Sorry, we just don't have any answers for you.” For him, and for his patients, conventional medicine had many answers, but sometimes they weren't enough.  Starting his 50-year medical career as a family physician, he delivered babies, did some minor surgery and worked in the emergency room, providing the most comprehensive care that he could.  Over the years, he found that other disciplines held the promise of providing useful answers for those patients who did not respond adequately to conventional medical care.  Slowly his practice evolved into something new, that did not really have a name, and he called it Complex Medical Problem Solving.  Over time, he found himself working mostly with those unfortunate patients who had not received a clear diagnosis from conventional medicine and were suffering with persistent and debilitating illnesses including Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Lyme disease with its coinfections, Autism, and all varieties of Chronic Pain, amongst others.  He is the author of several popular books including his 2018 book "Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Chronic Environmental Illness" and his 2021 book "Energetic Diagnosis" and 2022 update “Mold and Mycotoxins: Current Evaluation and Treatment 2022”. Key Takeaways: Why is conventional medicine not open to many tools in the energy realm? What is the ideal balance of biochemistry vs. physics in a treatment protocol? Is intuition a form of energetic diagnosis? Are empaths more likely to develop physical illnesses? What are energetic cords? What is an energy vampire? Are energy medicine tools necessary as a counterbalance to the increasing levels of EMFs in our environment? What are tools like FSM and LENS? How does one become a healer? What is the piezoelectric effect? Can energetic stagnation be felt using palpation? What can be learned about healing from interactions with plants? Can physical illnesses originate in the spiritual realm? Dr. Ann uses a combination of functional blood chemistry analysis, nutrition, applied kinesiology, and other natural remedies with a functional medicine approach to help people with a host of brain/body issues. Let’s get started as there’s so much to cover, including practical ways that you can start at home to optimize your neurotransmitter levels, reduce stress, and feel better! Episode Highlights With Dr. Ann-Marie Barter What neurotransmitters are and the areas of health they affect (hint: most things!) Dr. Nathan has been treating chronic complex medical illnesses for 25 years now, and Lyme disease for the past 15 years. As his practice has evolved, he finds himself increasingly treating the patients who have become so sensitive and toxic that they can no longer tolerate their usual treatments, and his major current interest is in finding unique ways of helping them to recover. The recent findings that mast cell activation and porphyria are more common than has been appreciated by the medical profession are of particular importance in this regard.

Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and Chronic Environmental Illness and while he is certainly known for his expertise in these domains, his passions and skills as a healer extend far beyond than that of just chronic environmental illness.   In this discussion, we start off with a exploration of Dr. Nathan's early childhood, hearing about his spiritual upbringing with Orthodox Judaism and his eventual journey into numerous other spiritual traditions and practices. Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about healing your body from toxic illnesses such as Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Chronic Environmental Illness. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Neil Nathan. Neil Nathan, MD was introduced with a more formal summary of his bio in podcast episode #19. For this podcast, I want to be more informal and just say how much I value and respect Dr. Nathan and the work that he does to help his patients. Dr. Nathan has been a mentor to me over the years, and I am always grateful when there are more opportunities to learn from him. I appreciate that Dr. Nathan has never accepted the toolbox that he has available and that he has continued to look for new and better options to help his population of chronically ill patients. While his toolbox is quite large, he’s still looking, still searching, still open to new and different approaches. Until we have all the answers, this is the type of doctor I think most of us would want. In his new book “Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Chronic Environmental Illness”, Dr. Nathan shares his wisdom, experience, and toolbox with all of us. It is profoundly enlightening. Key Takeaways: - What is the difference between toxicity and sensitivity? - What is a binder? How are absorption and adsorption different? - How does one determine which binders to use? - Can binder effectiveness be maximized with a focus on the liver and gallbladder? - How are intracellular toxins detoxified? - How important are HLA-DR genetics in terms of being a predictor of illness and a predictor of treatment outcome? - What screening tests might be used to evaluate an environment for the possibility of mold? - How are urine mycotoxin tests helpful? - How can mold from a water-damaged building vs. mold from food consumption be differentiated in urine mycotoxin tests? - How often is colonization a consideration in recovering from mold illness? - Does treating MARCoNS make a positive shift for patients clinically? - How do Bartonella and Babesia differ in their symptom presentation? - What is provocation testing? - Can Bartonella be treated without antibiotics? - What is Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and how is it treated? - How might various body systems be rebooted? - What is Polyvagal Theory, and what role does it play in recovery?
