Found a great pair of posts that I wanted to share with you to start off this week. First, Inspiration & More (@LifeWithJohn) comes at us with a very simple yet powerful reminder: “People wait all week for Friday, all year for summer, all a lifetime for happiness. Be happy today!” No sense in putting things off to wait to have some joy and happiness in your life. Set it up today!! We see too many examples of how fast time goes. On the second one from Coach Hines (@CoachKurtHines) where he reminds us to “Wake up each day, with the goal of leaving things (and most importantly, PEOPLE), better than you found them!” To me this goes with the idea of no sense of putting off being happy & doing things right in life. We all need more of this for sure, so why don't we be the ones looking to do it. Thanks for listening. It's the most wonderful time of the year...it's football time in the Mountains! You can smell it in the air! In our annual kickoff to football episode, Neil and Will sit down with an icon in High School Mountain Football lore - Coach John Hines. In a turn of events of the past year, Coach Hines left a storied tradition he built in one small community in Appalachia to now lead another mountain community - in hopes they to can make it to the "promise land" of Kroger Field (or Commonwealth Stadium as some would say)! He'll explain why the change of scenery and what gives him motivation to keep coaching. He'll share with the guys the significance of sport on small town communities and how it just hits a little different in Appalachia. Take a listen as he goes into his own career and how, if given the chance, he would still be playing the game he still most passionately loves. If you're a fan of football, or just small town community in general, he speaks to the heart of all Appalachians - and wears "a big hat." You might even hear Neil explain why one person may be the reason for an entire sport to be "cancelled." Also, don't forget the #AppBiz of the week: Martin's (Truck Parts/Peterbilt)! It is difficult to think of a more challenging job, with the tremendous time demand and constant pressure to perform, than that of a head football coach. The number of families destroyed because husbands and fathers spend all their time coaching is heartbreaking. Yet, it seems the only way to succeed in that career is to dedicate your entire life to it. Coach Kurt Hines is currently the head football coach at Coronado High School in California and has been a successful high school football coach for twenty-five years. He has won multiple championships and was the 2012 Head Football Coach of the Year. And he has done it on his terms. In our conversation, Coach Hines shares why and how he has kept his faith and family as his top priorities throughout his career. He is a man who knows exactly who he is, stands for what he believes, and is relentlessly unwavering in pursuit of the life he is meant to live. Show highlights: Mentality of coaching football How to transition from the intensity of the football field to home life The greater purpose of love Keeping faith at the forefront throughout the entire day The decision to choose family over football The importance of having a strong “why” in life Why he does not hold coaches' meetings on Sunday The value of emphasizing the wedding ring over a championship ring Where to find Coach Hines: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachkurthines/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/CoachKurtHines?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Web Site: https://www.coachkurthines.com/ Follow Mike Bellini on IG: https://www.instagram.com/realmikebellini/ Ultra Marriage Resources Book: www.theultramarriage.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/ultra_marriage/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100011729101170 Youtube: Ultra Marriage https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsoiUBRBK9BsZ8FDxj3kZ_w

Coach Kurt Hines joins us today on the podcast sharing some of his favorite and most successful culture building lessons. As a coach, it’s important to be authentic with our players, and even more important than that, focusing on our why and reevaluating our driving factor for coaching athletes every day. Coach makes the distinction between fear and respect and gives us examples of what to do and what not to do! As a coach, how do you start a great culture? • People, people, people!! • Love people and they aren’t part of an agenda for your own success. What should you do in your 1st Coach Staff Meeting? • Share your “Why” • What do you want to hold on to from the previous culture? How do you connect with your athletes? • Intentionally teach and use the word “love”. • Be mindful of your ACTIONS. (Actions affect their perception of your more than your words!!) • Communicate that our love is not dependent on their ability. Possibly one of the most important takeaways, which will drive you towards both success in the game and in life is be true to yourself and others. We cannot substitute a strategy of behavior for a needed change in our way of being towards others. “My goal isn’t to get rings, it’s to change lives.” Keys to Maintaining Strong Relationships with Players on a Large Team: • Workout with players… • Asking questions about their lives and family. • Look for non-verbal cues to detect- challenges and struggles in their lives. • Not always going to be with you and the player- facilitate relationships with other coaches and players. • Intentionally help leaders to reach out to certain players. Small group workouts.
