Speed limit increase not 'desirable or appropriate' - Councillor

A speed limit increase near a beachside town north of Auckland is being described as dangerous and hugely confusing. The chunk of road on the Hibiscus Coast Highway has gone from 50 kms back up to 70kms. It's part of the government's policy to reverse Labour's speed limit reductions that it said slowed Kiwis and the economy down. Some locals have complained saying the stretch of highway between Orewa village and Hatfields beach is a busy spot with pedestrians and beachgoers. In a letter to locals Auckland Transport said it doesn't think the speed limit change to 70kms is "desirable or appropriate", but it is legally obligated to make the change. Auckland councillor for Albany John Watson spoke to Lisa Owen.

"What we expect is as soon as we get the high intensities on those saturated soils, we will see quick flooding and slips happening." South of Orewa, Griffiths is saying there'll be possible localised flooding. She said she has not seen rain like Friday's downpour in Auckland before. Heather du Plessis-Allan: Judith Collins raised good points but her speech was desperate

Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive

Play Episode Listen Later May 3, 2021 2:23

On Judith Collins' so called race baiting speech at the weekend: I think it is fair to say that this speech smacks of desperation. I'll explain why I think that, but can I just say at the outset that this is a legitimate subject to raise. If you haven't caught up on the speech, on Saturday Collins basically accused the government of possibly introducing “two systems” based on race by stealth. She referred to a document called He Puapua, which has been sitting with the government since 2019.And the documents outlines what the government needs to do in order to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by 2040.He Puapua makes a number of recommendations, including Māori wards on councils, making New Zealand history compulsory in schools, and setting up a Māori health authority – all done.  It also recommends a separate Māori parliament, and a separate Māori justice system based on Tikanga Māori.I think it's entirely plausible that Labour might well consider implementing more of these recommendations given the size of the Māori caucus and the pressure it'll be putting on the PM, and the fact that they've already introduced one of these recommendations without any warning ahead of the election, and that's the Māori wards on councils. But, as legit a subject as this is, and as much as the Prime Minister does need to face questions on this, this just feels like desperation from Collins. It feels like they rushed this speech or wrote it at the last minute, because there was no heads up to media that this was coming so there no political editors at the conference.  It was on a Saturday. It came out of the blue entirely. And, given the subject matter, it was always going to be compared to the Orewa speech which propelled Don Brash up the polls. There are strategies for how to get a topic like this up and running in the media, and this was not one of them.On the contrary it feels like Collins is clutching at anything to get her polling up and keep any leadership challenges at bay.So while I think she raises some good points that need answering, the overwhelming sense of desperation around the speech might drown that out. It might be that we end up talking about that, not the substance of it.

Tim Beveridge: Government seems preoccupied by optics

The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2021 5:04

It's been an interesting week, hasn't it? But a bit of a bad week for the government on one of its core values.Of course, it's been a good week in the end, with the outbreaks which we were all concerned about. We maybe have got on top of that. But in terms of one of the core values of the government – transparency – I think it's been a bad week.Today, there's a story in the Herald on Sunday about WorkSafe having taken enforcement action against four hotels over physical distancing issues, training, donning and taking off PPE, and contractor management.WorkSafe having taken enforcement action in August.  However, it's only been made public now.How many months is that?Do the maths on that: five months later. It's only been made public now after repeated questions to WorkSafe from The Herald.Of course, problems are going to arise, but it seems that the transparency issue is still something the government and its agencies have yet to get to grips with.Let's not forget the Roche/Simpson report, which was a report looking at the government's handling of Covid and was a fairly brutal and blunt assessment of the health ministry's control of our response to Covid-19 leading up to the August outbreak. That report – delivered to the government in September – was only publicly released just before everyone went on break for Christmas! In my view that is one of the most egregious failures in their stated aim of everything being transparent. It's worth remembering because the government want you to forget it.Remember, this government campaigned on their response to Covid-19, and yet that key report which was critical of the government's response was kept from the public. Then there was last week. The two cases identified in Orewa. How did we find out?  Hone Harawira - on Heather Du Plessis-Allan's Drive Show on NewstalkZB.In response to a conversation around roadblocks, the reason Hone was following through with those was that he had on good authority - I think in his words – “multiple and impeccable sources” confirming two new positive cases in Orewa.I don't know when the Health Ministry were going to tell us. Was it because they were going to wait until they had had time to dress it all up and line all their ducks in a row, so it didn't look so bad?So, what exactly is the core value driving some of the decision-making of the government and the ministry? For me – it's all about the optics. It's all about how it looks, and it seems that the government doesn't trust us with information. It appears to me that the government and its agencies are more consumed with presenting information in a way that doesn't make them look bad. They're worried about our reaction to it – whether we're going to panic and so their claim of transparency is just words, words, words. And it's led to the situation the government found itself in the last few days with the Wiggles, having sold 40,000 tickets, magically being given last minute places in mandatory isolation.Look, you can imagine that's a lose-win-lose-win situation for the government because here we have 40,000 tickets sold; they entertain children; it's the kids - and the government could imagine themselves on a PR hiding to nothing if they had ended up having to cancel those concerts. But then you get the case of Trev Ponting. A Japan-based Kiwi with terminal brain cancer and all he wanted to do was get home to see his mother. But the initial application for emergency spots in managed isolation for him and his family were turned down. Well, there's another core value that they're missing as well, which is the kindness thing.Thankfully, it's been reversed. But you might wonder what would have happened if the media hadn't revealed that story as well as the news through Hone about the other positive Covid cases. It now starts to look like, maybe, if you're trying to appeal to the government to get a decision in your favour – don't appeal to kindness, don't appeal to their hearts or to...

Ashley Bloomfield: No positive tests yet but too early to rule out community transmission

Hundreds of concerned Aucklanders have swamped Covid testing stations today - with so far no further positive tests, says director general of health Ashley Bloomfield.More than 600 Covid tests had been conducted at the Orewa station alone, Bloomfield told Newstalk ZB's Heather du Plessis-Allan, following the discovery of three positive cases in the community - one in Northland and two on Auckland's North Shore - in the past week. The two confirmed cases on the North Shore - a father and daughter - have been moved into quarantine.Bloomfield said it was still too early to say whether Aucklanders should be staying put for anniversary weekend."There's been a lot of testing - so it's been great to see the response. The more tests we get back that are negative, the more confident we can be that we have headed off community transmission. We can give firm advice tomorrow."Bloomfield announced earlier today that all returnees in managed isolation would now be required to stay in their rooms for the last two days of their time in quarantine after the three new Covid-19 cases were discovered in the community.Bloomfield said he could not confirm reports out of Australia that 12 people had left the Pullman Hotel - where the three community cases originated - and since travelled to Australia."I can't confirm that," he told du Plessis-Allan. "I do know that of the 354 people who we have followed up from the 9th (of January), that three of those people had subsequently travelled overseas - I do not know where to."There's been a lot of testing - 600 in Orewa and no further positive tests. So that's good news so far."No more former Pullman guests had tested positive either. Health officials were chasing the 52 remaining former guests - from a total of 354 guests - to ensure they had not only had a test, but had come back negative.Bloomfield said the latest two community cases, who were re-tested yesterday and announced last night, were a father and his young daughter from Auckland's North Shore. They had been moved into quarantine and the child's mother is isolating at home for 14 days. It's been confirmed the father and daughter also have the South African variant. They recently returned to New Zealand and left managed isolation at Auckland's Pullman Hotel on January 15.Bloomfield said there was still no evidence of community transmission. New Zealand would have a "very good picture" tomorrow as to whether there had been community transmission, he said.Interviews have been carried out with the family who tested positive and the list of the locations they visited is on the Ministry of Health website and Bloomfield said this would continue to be updated.Bloomfield said he didn't know the detail of why Albany Farmers - which one of the cases visited on January 24 between midday and 1pm - was identified as a location of interest and not the entire Westfield mall it sits in but said he had confidence in contact tracers' ability to identify locations. The father was not at work and the child was not at an early childhood centre.Bloomfield said the long exposure events was to "cast the net wide" as a precaution, he said.Close contacts of the family have been identified and are isolating and being tested.Bloomfield said the queues at the pop-up testing stations in Ōrewa and Albany have now reduced to about 30 minutes. There is also now food, water and sunscreen at the sites and traffic management.Bloomfield said he wanted to see even more people using the Covid Tracer app and thanked Kiwis for the surge in scanning in recent days.

Listen above as political reporter Katie Bradford and commentator Ben Thomas join Francesca Rudkin to discuss the news of the weekGreen Party co-leader James Shaw is full of disdain but unsurprised at Winston Peters' "politics of division", which he calls a desperate plea for votes.Peters yesterday delivered a blistering race-relations speech in Orewa that recalled then-National leader Don Brash's "one law for all" speech in 2004, which saw National surge in the polls.Peters said that too many Māori were "stuck in the past and they want you to pay for it", and that he had threatened to upend the coalition in order to block a deal over Ihumātao."If Labour governs after the election, by themselves, heaven forbid, or with the Greens, God help us all, then they will do a deal at Ihumātao," Peters said yesterday.Peters said a deal would see a flood of settled Treaty of Waitangi claims being re-opened, even though the occupants say it's not a treaty issue but one of cultural heritage.Grant Robertson, the minister leading negotiations around Ihumātao, has also said there is no intention to do anything that could unravel full and final treaty settlements.Shaw said today that Peters was up to his old tricks by misrepresenting the issue."That's his shtick. He's trying to use the politics of division to drive up his vote and get back into Parliament. I don't like it, I never have liked it."I was completely unsurprised. A bit saddened."Shaw said Peters' tactic wouldn't resonate because people had moved on from "that view of the world"."He's just desperate for votes, to tell you the honest truth, and he's falling back on an old formula that's worked for him in the past, and I just hope that people see through it."Shaw and Peters have become increasingly critical of each other in recent months as the campaign neared, and today Shaw pitched a Labour-Greens Government at a public meeting at the East Harbour Women's Club in Eastbourne. He outlined three crisis issues at the meeting - poverty, climate change and biodiversity. He talked through the Greens' wealth tax on net assets over $1 million, the next phase of climate action to target specific industries - agriculture, heating and transport - and greater protections for marine life and oceans."Transport is the one I'm really worried about," said Shaw, who will release policy about this next week."We've completely fallen in love with Ford Rangers. For every electric car, we bring in 16 Ford Rangers. Transport emissions are frankly out of control."He also took a shot at National Party leader Judith Collins, who he said was "harvesting grievance" for saying that Labour and the Greens hated farmers.Sustainability issues around food and fibre production were being led by the farmers themselves, Shaw said."They want to solve that problem, and want support for that transition. It really irritates me when I hear people saying that we hate farmers. What we want is better for farmers."Green co-leader James Shaw told a public meeting in Eastbourne that the best way to make Jacinda Ardern PM again was to party vote Green. Photo / Derek ChengIt was "counter-intuitive", he said, but the best way to make Jacinda Ardern Prime Minister again was to party vote Green, which would ensure the centre-left bloc is bigger than the centre-right.If the Greens didn't make it back to Parliament, there would be more than 100,000 wasted votes on the left; there were 162,000 Green voters in 2017.Afterwards, he told the Herald that messaging around strategic voting needed to sharpen as October 17 inched closer."It's around when we're hovering on the [5 per cent] threshold. New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says a "dangerous settlement" at Ihumātao is just around the corner and only his party will stop it. During a speech at Orewa to around 100 people today, Mr Peters said any deal over the disputed land would trigger a landslide of treaty claims at enormous taxpayer expense. He then went on to deny race-baiting or staging the event at Orewa - the site of one of the country's most controversial speeches. RNZ reporter Anneke Smith filed this story.

What a disheartening and disappointing week that was, eh?Particularly so after the crescendo which was the return of Super Rugby last weekend. The world seeing stadiums full of New Zealanders celebrating and revelling in our Covid 19 banishment and the return of normal life.  We were on a roll.  We were on fire.  We were leading the world. But the balloon was quickly burst by the saga of the 2 Karens from the UK and their tiki tour of the North Island, full of virus that should have been tested for before they were released from their quarantine early.  Covid was back after taking a 24 day holiday.Oh, how the world enjoyed that, particularly the Aussies. Our false pride deflated. What followed next were tales of quarantine parties in hotels. There was mass mingling of quarantined residents, some at the end of their quarantine some at the beginning, worst practice scenarios.  Escapees.  Weddings held in quarantined virus hives of hotels without the bride's knowledge. Then the ignominy of gang associated family, let out of their 14-day isolation to go to a funeral of a relative, a 57-year-old who had been gangland-style executed. Who then violated the trust put in them by allowing a teen and an eight-year-old child to go walkabouts and not return to isolation. What part of that wasn't completely predictable? What a storm this all created.  People, who only weeks before criticised the government for being heartless for not allowing compassionate exemptions. People, who praised the judge who flew in the face of Ashley Bloomfield and granted the son of a judge a compassionate exemption. These people suddenly changed their tune, pivoted 180 degrees and screamed at the Director-General of Health, “Why on earth did you allow these compassionate exemptions?” The Director General. Saint Ashley. Who then turned round and said he had no idea but apologised and said he'd tell the frontline off.Random question. Have you ever seen the Minister of Health or the Director General touring the quarantine facilities to check they're up to standard? Or to tell the frontline off? It has happened but obviously not enough. There were the rabid revenge seekers who demanded Ashley's head. Guy Body did a great cartoon of a statue of Saint Ashley being pulled to the ground by an angry mob.Oh, it was ugly. But it got worse. At the same time, a report came out highlighting how misguided and inefficient our entire health system is. A report that highlighted the ideological devolution into a million and one bureaucracies that started 20 years ago under Annette King and a Labour Government that means we have more middle managers that health staff. It made the tales this week of how the head and the hands of our health system seem to have no idea of what each other need and demand from each other make total sense. In Ashley Bloomfield's hapless interview with Mike Hosking, I heard him plaintively cry, “We have a devolved system”.Yes, we do. We have reaped what we sowed. You can buy as many flu vaccinations as you want but the local DHB will still lose them.Next thing we know the GDP figures came out. Not as bad as Canada. Way worse than Australia. All unpleasant. And then some feral shot a police officer dead. Just as phase two of our arms legislation came up. This was gutting. A 28-year-old from Orewa who sounds fantastic, who always wanted to be a cop. This story made me cry for the first time in a long time.It was a bad week for aspirational world-leading New Zealand. A New Zealand that boasted to the world it was fighting gun crime and defeating viruses. But amongst the ashes were embers of hope.My boss told us that our company is doing better than expected. So much so that the voluntary pay reductions we all took will be reversed this week. A story I've heard a bit. The Recovery is better than expected – which means we're still in a horrid position but not as horrid as some say. Then Grant Robertson told Mike Hosking on Friday that the ap...

Val Wright: Natural Frequency Healer and her inspirational song ‘Peace to the World, is a global finalist

GreenplanetFM Podcast

Val who has been a natural healer for over 50 years has had her intuitively written song reach the last 10 finalists in the Global Peace Song Awards. Yet, she says it’s a collaborative work with her Canadian travelling friend Lorna Eastman and especially Cameron Barclay, of the Ten Tenors who agreed to sing ‘Peace to the World’. Also friend Paula Feather who wrote the music, which was arranged and produced by Mike McCarthy of Manuka Studios in Orewa. This was a light-hearted laughing - interview - that was both entertaining and softly enlightening. Val in her natural healing practice has devoted her life to health, happiness and wellness. Early Life Val took up a nursing career but was unable to complete her training as she left to nurse her mother for the last few years of her life, who became critically ill as a result of a contaminated vaccine. She took her mother to Dr. Murdock Ross, a colour therapist who diagnosed her condition (with no background knowledge) as the result of the vaccine and by using colour therapy he assisted her mother where orthodox medicine was not able to help her. Going back 60 years, colour therapy was a method of dispensing what is essentially sunlight and the colours of the spectrum to assist in healing. This experience sparked Val’s interest in natural therapies. She became Murdock’s practice nurse and trained under his guidance. Also, she studied reflexology and used this modality to alleviate her own migraine headaches. Later on, with her husband she bought the hot mineral water thermal springs in Parakai near Helensville. For many years as an adjunct to her healing practice, used warm to hot water to sooth bodies and allow them to take in minerals to relax and heal the self. All this time she was open to assistance from higher energies and when she wants assistance she asks and invariably - the answer and solution comes. EAV 'electro acupuncture according to Voll.’ Professor Reinhard Voll from Germany devised this method to be able to measure human frequencies back in 1958 and Val experienced 30 years of practice with these machines - especially when she moved into Orewa House where she practiced for 22 years. https://www.biontologyarizona.com/dr-reinhard-voll The EAV bio energy machine was computerized in 2008 - and things became far more extensive, not only does this technology scan every cell, it checks for chemicals and even emotions that affect your health then corrects the underlying imbalances. People who ended up seeing Val invariably came by word of mouth (with no advertising) and so her relationship with her patients was far more personal. As Val evolved her understanding of healing she became more known as a practitioner of frequency medicine ... because we humans though made up of cells, tissue plus blood and bone, we - at a deeper level of being - consist of a subatomic field of energy that vibrates. Thus, Val is passionate about raising one’s frequency so as to oscillate to a higher and lighter level of being. Writing a song for humanity. Over the years she has realized that humanity is still challenged by the difficulty of living in peace and understanding. So in looking at the world today she intuitively thought that we needed a song to sing, that lifted our vibes and one that centered on the human heart and brought humanity together. We now know that every word we speak, or sing and every thought we think has a frequency, and Val, knew she could make a difference in the wider world by sharing the frequency of Love and Peace in a song.                    And from this intent she started to ‘download’ words that came to her in the middle of the night so she wrote them down and made them into a song, and with the help of her friends brought about a collaborative effort that is simply called 'Peace to the World.' This song was entered into the global peace song awards and is now in the finals - out of ten finalists. Cameron Barclay one of the 'Ten Tenors' agreed to sing the song with his beautiful voice. If the song is successful Val wants to support the NZ’s Peace Foundation, which introduced the concept of Conflict Resolution to classrooms under the name of Cool Schools and guided by Yvonne Duncan’s work. There is a huge need for champions of this important skill - right across NZ and the greater world. Once learnt, the children will have unique and important life tools to then take home and teach their parents. The ripple effect will be a huge boost for World Peace’. In this interview, Peace to the World is played twice and if you enjoy it and it lifts your spirit, we ask you to please vote for it. Voting is being done on FB and you are encouraged to follow the link below and vote for this song. https://www.facebook.com/2018-PSA-Classical-Opera-A-Cappella- 298310317702500 The song is now in the finals for the Global Peace Song Awards so the next stage is the public vote, which is judged on the number of 'Likes' on FaceBook and its outreach. The good thing being you don't need a FB account to vote.                    Click on the link which takes you to the category “Classical, Opera & A Cappella”, scroll down to find the song. The finalists are in alphabetical order so towards the bottom, you will see Peace to the World. Please help spread these Words of Peace and Love as far and wide as possible by sending a ‘LIKE’ on the link. The purpose is to raise awareness that World Peace is possible if we all play our part and be kind to one another. The saying 'Be the change that you would like to see in the World' is very apt here and you can help by sending this link to all your family, friends and contacts. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Valemma Wright, I have been a Natural Health Practitioner for 50 years, specializing in frequency medicine for the last 30 yrs. We now know that every word we speak, or sing and every thought we think has a frequency. I knew I could make a difference in the wider world by sharing the frequency of Love and Peace in a song. That is why I wrote ‘Peace to the World’, (which was inspired of course). Then, in amazing serendipity, (and given there are no accidents) - I met Cameron Barclay of the Ten Tenors. Cameron agreed to sing Peace to the World and put his heart and soul, along with his beautiful voice into raising the harmonic frequency of Peace and Love. Click on the link below and please "LIKE" ‘Together we can make a difference.’ Thank you!!! Love and Light Valemma. https://www.facebook.com/2018-PSA-Classical-Opera-A-Cappella- 298310317702500 The next stage is the public vote, which is the number of likes on facebook and the reach throughout the world of the voting public. You don’t need to have a facebook account to vote. If you want to vote, then email valemma@xtra.co.nz and we will send you the link. When are the winners determined? Voting completes on the 22nd of April, a master number and Earth Day. The finalists will be announced in Los Angeles, on a date to be advised. Congratulations, Valemma, I am going to vote right away. Now you listeners out there, all over the world, yes, do vote. Vote for Peace to the World. Vote for the message of peace, carried on the beautiful voice of Cameron Barclay of the Ten Tenors.
