The environmental recording for Oak Island Rain Soundwalk was recorded April 30th 2024. It's a really gentle soundscape; dewy and hushed. I chose this photo for the cover because, if you look closely, it captures the fine rain drops that fell that morning. It's hard to take a picture of rain. I got lucky here. I've gave Oak Island quite a bit of attention last year, initially surveying the soundscape without ornamentation:Later, I visited the spur road that leads to the area in the winter, basking in the sound of skeins of geese overhead and croaking Sandhill Cranes foraging in fallow fields. Finally, I used a recording made peering in the heart of the 100 acre Oak Savanna preserved at Oak Island for my sophomore Listening Spot effort: So we're back, and even though it captures an out-of-season sound for this part of the world, I thought it might be a soothing addition for summer programming. The weather here in the Pacific Northwest has been idyllic. Meanwhile, headlines land in my news feed about heat waves on the US East Coast and in Europe. If you're feeling the heat, this one goes out to you.In this season of open windows and being outside, our cities become a little noisier. Sometimes that can be exciting Sometimes it can be unwanted. I make no pretenses about what my soundwalks are for, what purpose they serve, but if this one can quell any thirst for peace, quiet, and tenderness out there, I'm all for it.In this landscape we hear migratory Bullock's Oriole, Rufous Hummingbird, Orange-crowned Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Western Tanager, Purple Finch, Tree Swallow, Black-headed Grosbeak, Savannah Sparrow, Red-wing Blackbird... The interesting thing is they are all singing lowkey, as the kids say, as in quietly. The rain seems to have a subduing effect. Thanks for listening and reading! I'm making this one available in its entirety here on Substack, because I think there is probably someone new-to-me it could be useful to. If you enjoy what you hear, please consider telling just one person about it. As per usual, Oak Island Rain Soundwalk is available on all music streaming services today, July 4, 2025, Happy Independence Day! This is a public episode. July 3rd, 2025 MADISON -- First up, be greeted by WLRN's founder, Thistle Pettersen before she hands the baton to WLRN's newest member, Ms. Cat Bradfield, who delivers the world news segment. After enjoying Tracy Chapman's song "The Promise", hear Arianne of LGB Alliance USA speak with Thistle about Pride 2025 just before Arianne hopped into the woods for a RadFem summer camp in the Pacific Northwest this June and July. Then, hear a rendition of aurora linnea's first piece she turned in to WLRN in 2021 that April Neault loved so much, she made into this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiJGYYpXhWo After the reading of aurora's essay entitled "Pride: Corporate Patriarchy's Celebration in the Streets", we end our show by thanking our guest, Arianne of LGB Alliance USA, and signing off. This month's artwork is by WLRN's graphic designer and artist, Margaret Moss. Edition 111 Artist's Statement : "I started the featured image with an oil sketch Berthe Morisot created in 1885. The drawing/painting she made is a self-portrait that includes a portrait of her daughter. All loosely rendered. I kept the background of Berthe Morisot's oil sketch, and I digitally sketched an image of our guest Arianne of LGB Alliance USA, and Tracy Chapman, whose song, ‘The Promise' is included in this month's podcast. I included purple and green because I especially like those colors - and I appreciate that they have a connection to (British) suffragists. I enjoyed interacting with Berthe Morisot's artwork. Even though she created her painting in 1885, it has a modern feel. I expect that Morisot had a greater influence on Modern Art than she is given credit for. I appreciate women such as Berthe Morisot, all the suffragists, Arianne, and Tracy Chapman for their contributions to our culture. And I appreciate WLRN for lifting up women so their voices can be heard more widely."
Staying safe on a boat means: prepare before you goNothing says summer like the 4th of July, comin' right up. In a world grappling with escalating societal challenges, the iChange Justice podcast pulls back the curtains on the intricate dance between local realities and national implications within the criminal justice system. Hosts Joy Gilfilen and Karen Ball invite listeners to journey into Whatcom County, Washington—a seemingly small corner of the Pacific Northwest that, as they meticulously reveal, serves as a powerful microcosm for the struggles and solutions facing communities across the entire nation. From the unique pressures of border security to the pervasive influence of the prison industrial complex, Gilfilen, with decades of on-the-ground experience, paints a vivid picture of the "Snaggletooth Dragon" of conflicts and paradoxes that erode public safety and economic well-being. Ball, a seasoned veteran in criminal justice and social change, expertly guides the conversation, prompting Gilfilen to distill complex global issues into tangible local impacts. But this episode is not merely a lament; it's a call to action rooted in hope. As they delve into the origins and application of the "Joy Triangle Model," Gilfilen and Ball underscore the profound power of local engagement, authentic leadership, and the conscious pivot from fear-based thinking to regenerative action. They remind us that true change, like law enforcement itself, begins at the local level, where neighbors once helped neighbors and communities cultivated profound care. Through their impassioned dialogue, listeners are left with a renewed sense of possibility: that by understanding and addressing the nuances of a place like Whatcom County, we can indeed change justice, not just for one community, but for all.
Last week, stakeholders from the Upper Mississippi River toured the Columbia and Snake River to see what is similar and different from the two water systems. Last year, stakeholders from the Pacific Northwest visited the Mississippi in this continued collaboration between the two rivers. Michelle Hennings is the executive director of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers. Gary Williams is the executive director of the Upper Mississippi Waterway Association. They both join us to share what the Columbia and Mississippi River can learn from each other.

There is no forever solution to nuclear waste, and humanity is doomed to always live with its drastic consequences. With underserved areas always getting the small end of the stick, Dr. Sarah Fox helps to elevate their voices by putting community storytelling in the spotlight. In this conversation with Corinna Bellizzi, she shares how she underscored the disproportionate impact of environmental contamination on marginalized regions by highlighting the stories and activism of ordinary people. Dr. Sarah also explains why the lives of everyday individuals must not be treated as less important than in-depth scientific researches, which both aim to build healthier and more sustainable communities.About Guest:Seattle-based author and historian Sarah Fox is drawn to the stories we tell about places, bodies, and the relationships between them. Caroline Fraser grew up in the shadow of Ted Bundy, the most notorious serial murderer of women in American history, surrounded by his hunting grounds and mountain body dumps, in the brooding landscape of the Pacific Northwest. But in the 1970s and '80s, Bundy was just one perpetrator amid an uncanny explosion of serial rape and murder across the region. Why so many? Why so weirdly and nightmarishly gruesome? Why the senseless rise and then sudden fall of an epidemic of serial killing? As Murderland indelibly maps the lives and careers of Bundy and his infamous peers in mayhem—the Green River Killer, the I-5 Killer, the Night Stalker, the Hillside Strangler, even Charles Manson—Fraser's Northwestern death trip begins to uncover a deeper mystery and an overlapping pattern of environmental destruction. At ground zero in Ted Bundy's Tacoma stood one of the most poisonous lead, copper, and arsenic smelters in the world, but it was hardly unique in the West. As Fraser's investigation inexorably proceeds, evidence mounts that the plumes of these smelters not only sickened and blighted millions of lives but also warped young minds, including some who grew up to become serial killers.Murderland transcends true-crime voyeurism and noir mythology, taking readers on a profound quest into the dark heart of the real American berserk. In this episode of the Modern Day Sniper Podcast, Caylen Wojcik sits down with Pacific Northwest shooter, craftsman, and all-around salt-of-the-earth human Corson Piper for an honest conversation on performance, pressure, and finding purpose behind the rifle. The episode opens with a comparison between skydiving and shooting—two crafts where experience compounds quickly when the reps are tight, the focus is sharp, and feedback is immediate. Corson breaks down how the curve steepens when you're doing eight jumps a day or shooting hundreds of rounds over a few days, and how momentum accelerates mastery. From there, they get into Corson's roots: growing up on commercial fishing boats in Homer, Alaska, working on oil rigs by the time he turned 18, and eventually racing motorcycles before immersing himself in the competitive precision rifle world. His blue-collar background and high-stakes life experience shine through in every lesson—whether it's knowing how to manage fatigue, making fast wind calls, or being brutally honest about your mistakes.Topics Covered:How to train like a competitor, not just a shooterThe dangers of practicing only what you're good atWhy stress inoculation matters—and how to build itHow Corson shot over 12,000 rounds in one season and what he learnedMental stamina: how to stay in the zone for a 2-minute stage without burning out all dayWhy wind calls are less about speed and more about margin and memoryThe evolution of PRS and NRL Hunter and how each shape the modern marksmanEgo vs. execution: showing up underprepared and owning your outcomesThe therapeutic side of recoil, focus, and full presence in the shotWhy positional shooting is undervalued and how Corson uses a set of dice to randomize practiceYou'll also hear stories of helmet-smashing motorcycle crashes, broken fingers before big matches, and what it means to shoot for joy—not just trophies. Corson is proof that resilience, repetition, and showing up with intention matter more than any hack or gear upgrade.Whether you're a seasoned competitor or just getting started, there's something in this episode that will hit home. Step into the shadows between worlds... This week on Drew Blood's Dark Tales, something ancient is stalking the forests of the Pacific Northwest—and it doesn't belong in our reality. When the veil between dimensions wears thin, only one guardian stands between humanity and horrors not meant for this world. From the mind of Cesly1987 comes a savage, genre-bending tale that blends myth, magic, and menace into an unforgettable descent into interdimensional terror. Join Drew by the fire as he spins a story where nothing is as it seems, the hunters may be the hunted, and the line between protector and predator blurs under moonlight. "I'm a Warden Between Realities" by Cesly1987 – Lawk isn't your typical lawman—he's a peacekeeper from a hidden realm, tasked with policing the fragile borders between dimensions. When a monstrous fugitive crosses over into our world to harvest forbidden magical ingredients, Lawk must intervene before an entire community is torn apart. What begins as a covert mission spirals into a brutal confrontation with ancient enemies, dangerous spells, and horrifying truths about what hides in the woods. A bold fusion of cosmic horror, dark fantasy, and supernatural noir, this story redefines the meaning of monster hunting. In this episode of Conceptually Speaking, I sit down with Marcus Luther, a 13th-year high school English teacher and co-host of The Broken Copier podcast. After spending his first eight years teaching in Arkansas, Marcus recently returned to the Pacific Northwest, bringing with him a wealth of classroom experience and a passion for teacher-centered conversations. Our discussion explores the evolving landscape of teacher community-building, from the early days of Teacher Twitter to the current fractured digital spaces where educators seek connection and growth.Key Concepts from the Episode:The Digital Teacher's LoungeHow online spaces can recreate the collaborative spirit of in-person professional learning communitiesMoving beyond transactional networking toward authentic relationship-buildingThe role of digital platforms in sustaining teacher enthusiasm and preventing isolationCommunities of PracticeUnderstanding teaching as fundamentally community work that extends beyond school wallsThe "generosity journey" of sharing resources and learning from fellow educatorsBalancing local collegial relationships with broader professional networksStorytelling and ResistanceAddressing the vacuum of positive narratives about classroom possibilitiesThe urgent need to highlight what's working in public educationUsing authentic teacher voices to counter deficit-based reform narrativesNavigating Professional BoundariesManaging the relationship between classroom practice and public educator identityThe ethics of sharing experiences while maintaining privacySetting sustainable limits on development and growth outside the classroomMarcus brings a refreshing perspective on how educators can remain committed to the classroom while recognizing the power of broader professional community. His conviction that we need to tell better stories about the transformative potential of teaching offers hope in an era of educational uncertainty. Whether you're an early-career teacher seeking community or a veteran educator looking to reinvigorate your practice, this conversation demonstrates how authentic professional relationships can sustain both individual growth and collective advocacy for the teaching profession.Links:https://thebrokencopier.substack.com/https://web-cdn.bsky.app/profile/marcusluther.bsky.social Support the show

Within the audiobook of The Trail of Ted Bundy: Digging Up the Untold Stories, you'll hear the voices - many for the first time - of some of Ted Bundy's friends as they bring to light the secrets of what is was like to know him while he was actively involved in murder. The stories of his victims are here as well, as told by their friends, including the information and anecdotes that didn't make it into the investigative files and are being published here for the first time. Two of the former detectives who worked with author Kevin Sullivan during the writing of his widely acclaimed book return to aid listeners in fully understanding Bundy's murderous career, its ripple-effect impact on those who came into contact with him in one way or another, and dispelling commonly held myths. The Trail of Ted Bundy is a journey back in time, to when Ted Bundy was killing young women and girls in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. It's told by those who knew him, and you'll hear their revealing stories, many being voiced for the very first time. Friends of the victims are here as well, and they, too, share their insights about the victims, and some of what they tell here had been held back from the investigators, such was their commitment to their deceased friends. It's also the story of those who hunted Bundy, those who guarded him, and those who otherwise were parts of this strange case one way or another.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
A new high school program in Oregon teaches students the ins and outs of seafood butchery and the state’s "blue economy." The program was in the pilot stage last year at six schools but has grown to 15 and now has a new curriculum that focuses on seafood caught in the Pacific Northwest. A major goal of the program was to get local seafood in the hands of students, as a study commissioned by the Oregon Coast Visitors Association found that 90% of Oregon-caught seafood is exported. Maggie Michaels is the program coordinator for the program. James Byrne is a science teacher at Clatskanie Middle and High School. Cora Evenson is a sophomore at the same school and took the class last year. They all join us to share more about what students are learning in the program.V

My guest this month is Dan Zehrer, founder of the paint company described as a sleeper hit of Adepticon 2025, Bear Cavalry Paints! This ecologically conscious paint company operates out of Oregon State here in the great Pacific Northwest and have been making some fantastic paints for about a year now. I picked up their original set this past winter and was really impressed with the quality so I was excited to talk with Dan about everything that goes into their products. Dan shared some titbits about the career path that led him to found Bear Cavalry, discussed a little of the chemistry behind making paints, and teased some future collaborations with games and companies like Trench Crusade and others! As usual, this podcast was exclusive to Brush Wielders Union members for a few days before being released to general audiences.brushwieldersunion.com
What happens when everyday life collides with something that—according to everything we've been taught—shouldn't exist? In this spine-tingling episode, we bring you three firsthand accounts from the misty forests of the Pacific Northwest, each told by witnesses who never sought the spotlight yet can never forget what they saw. These aren't campfire yarns or shaky-cam curiosities. Story One – “The Trail Cam”A quiet suburban homeowner in Washington sets up a motion-triggered camera to catch whatever's overturning his garbage cans at night. The footage he captures upends his sense of safety and pulls him into a months-long game of cat-and-mouse with a creature that seems to be studying him just as closely.Story Two – “The Logging Road”Deep in the Cascades, two seasoned loggers begin finding outsized footprints, catching echoes of guttural calls, and sensing an intelligence tracking their every move. When they finally meet the eyes of what's been shadowing them, they realize the woods they've worked for decades may never have belonged to humans at all.Story Three – “The Night Shift”On patrol outside an isolated research facility, a security guard hears strange knocks and vocalizations drifting in from the treeline. His curiosity evolves into a groundbreaking—and chilling—attempt at back-and-forth communication with an unknown primate species that refuses to stay hidden. These encounters will challenge your assumptions about what roams beyond the trailhead and what it wants from us.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Show Notes:Amy's Links:Fifth Class ClimbingEpisode Intro:Dear listeners of the Female Guides Requested Podcast, happy Wednesday! I'm your host, Ting Ting. I'm currently working and playing in the Pacific Northwest, escaping the heat of Las Vegas. Early this year, I finally caught up with Amy Shore from Fifth Class Climbing, based in Bishop, California! And I'm excited to share our conversations with you.Amy grew up in North Dakota and spent her young adult years traveling the world while pursuing her college degree in International Studies. After finding climbing at the age of 21, it became her life's passion and has been a main focus of her life for almost two decades.Bouldering, sport & trad climbing, establishing big wall first ascents in the Sierra and Patagonia, guiding 14,000 ft peaks… Amy loves the vast array of disciplines that climbing allows one to pursue. Establishing Fifth Class Climbing School in 2016 allowed her the freedom to guide what really inspired her, which was not big mountain objectives, but rather women's events and courses that focus on teaching women to be independent climbers. In 2021, Amy became the lead safety manager for a National Geographic TV show, combining guiding with rigging and logistics, and traveling the world to do it.Most recently, Amy became a mom and now has a 20-month-old son. She still runs and guides for Fifth Class and is currently most interested in a new pursuit: projecting sport climbs. The day after our interview, Amy sent her first 5.13.Things We Talked about:From Whitney Base Camp to Fifth Class ClimbingWanted to work with different clientele to focus more on instructionsInstructed before she became a climberUpbringing – explored outdoors and tried different sportsTravel and then Travel & ClimbFrom pebble wrestling to big wallsMom & projecting single pitch sport climbsTraining entered her lifeGuiding is an empowering professionStarted her own business in 2016 – Fifth Class Climbing and SchoolRigging for TV showsChanges and transitions after having a kidWhy Amy loves logistical challenges Quotes:There's a small amount that is a part of me that likes to suffer and push myself and see what I can do.When you're in that kind of mindset of doing big wall first ascents and alpine climbing and then guiding, you're in a very much no fall territory.I get to be the places I love being. I get to teach and I get to give people an amazing experience that is maybe once in a lifetime for them. maybe get them hooked so that they're doing this all the time. and it was empoweringIt's nice to be able to facilitate programs that people are excited about offering and helping them make that happen through the permitting and stuff. As adults, we kind of take ourselves seriously and as a kid, you just do what you want to do. That risk tolerance thing changing [has] been a really interesting part of it for me. And sometimes I think it's good guiding wise because I do have a lower risk tolerance than I used to. And I think that I see things and maybe this is from spotting my son too, but I think I see things preemptively better than I used to.That's why I really like doing the rigging work and the TV work as well is that I think I logistics is kind of my jamI love hearing that kind of feedback after guiding. And it's a special industry we're in. we get to help people realize their dreams.

It’s peak harvest time for sweet cherries in Oregon and Washington. Growers in the Pacific Northwest are anticipating a strong crop this year, with a higher yield than last year’s harvest. But what they weren’t anticipating was a workforce shortage that’s being driven by the fear of immigration enforcement raids. KUOW reported earlier on how this issue is threatening the livelihoods of cherry farmers in Washington. The immigration crackdown is also clouding the outlook for cherry growers in Oregon, according to Ian Chandler, chair of the Oregon Sweet Cherry Commission and the co-owner of CE Farm Management, a cherry orchard in The Dalles. Chandler said he’s not aware of any recent immigration enforcement raids on farms in the Columbia Gorge. But he says the fear of potential enforcement activity led to a 50% reduction in available workers for most cherry farmers in the region at the start of harvest two weeks ago. Some migrant farm workers whose employers obtained H-2A visas for them have also been stuck at the border in Mexico and unable to help with the harvest in The Dalles, according to Tiffany Davis, business manager for K&K Land and Management. Chandler, Davis and Monica Zipprich, an orchard manager at K&K Land and Management, join us to talk about the toll federal immigration enforcement is taking on the Oregon sweet cherry industry.
This week on the TLC: Tend Life Community Podcast, we're tearing down the idea that fences and decks are just background features. We're joined by the dynamic duo behind Heilman Deck & Fence, Andy, and Amanda Heilman, for a conversation that goes beyond the picket line. From design trends that turn your yard into a personal paradise to practical tips that could save you thousands, this episode is stacked tighter than a cedar deck board with must-know advice. We kicked things off with a crisp 2023 Sauvignon Blanc from Barnard Griffin, bright, zippy, and perfect for sipping while dreaming of your next backyard upgrade. Then we dove into a full-bodied discussion on everything from when to repair vs. replace, how to weatherproof like a pro in the Pacific Northwest, and which DIY dreams are best left to the professionals. Plus, we uncovered the latest outdoor living trends and even peeked over the fence to see what the future holds for home exteriors. Whether you're planning your next project or just want to spot contractor red flags before it's too late, this episode nails it. And don't miss our signature Real Estate Roundup, where we shine a light on the rise of wire fraud in real estate transactions, and why email-only communication is a risk you can't afford. So, grab a glass and join us for a conversation that's equal parts education and inspiration. Your backyard will thank you.
In the mid-60s, an Oregon family was thrust into a supernatural gauntlet involving UAPs, dazzling indoor light shows, cycloptic beasts, dancing aliens, a smoking dome, possible poltergeist, an ominous (and evidently bulletproof) shadow stalker and—to cap it all off—a pack of spider-like tree stumps roaming the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. In fact, this onslaught of metaphysical mayhem got so intense that it sent this poor family fleeing from their home… never to return again. A new book examines the theory that lead and arsenic poisoning may have affected the brain development of serial killers like Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway. Childhood exposure to these poisons might provide a partial explanation for these horrific crimes. The book is “Murderland: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers.” It’s part memoir; part examination of anthropology, criminology, and also the ecological history of the Pacific Northwest. Guest Caroline Fraser, author of “Murderland: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers.” She grew up on Mercer Island and won the Pulitzer Prize for her biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder in 2018. "Miss, you'd better look at that note. I have a bomb."In November 1971, a man in a suit boarded a flight from Portland to Seattle, calmly handed a note to a flight attendant, and claimed he had a bomb. He demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck on standby. Hours later, somewhere over the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest, he opened the rear stairway of the plane and vanished into the night. Was it a fatal leap, the perfect getaway, or the birth of a new identity? Fifty years later, no one knows who Dan Cooper really was, what became of him, or if he ever touched the ground alive. But the theories haven't stopped... and neither has the obsession.Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanAdditional research & writing by Amelia White and Ira RaiLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.
