Darkness Radio Presents: Cryptid Creatures: Learning to Draw Mysterious Beasts From Around The World w/ Podcaster/Artist, BallyRaven! Have you ever watched a TV show or movie and wished you could sketch out one of these scary monsters on paper? Have you ever wanted to turn that art into something more? Cryptids are animals whose legends are spread far and wide at slumber parties, sleepaway campfires, or on internet webpages you stumble across at 2 a.m. Their existence has never been confirmed by science but that doesn't make them any less fascinating! In Cryptid Creatures, learn how to draw 35 different types of cryptids from all around the world and pick up a thing or two about their origins as well. For artists of all skill levels, this step-by-step drawing book will show you how to sketch basic shapes and forms as well as use shading techniques to help your drawings come alive. Learn to draw such creatures as: Bigfoot, aka Sasquatch, the iconic cryptid said to inhabit the Pacific Northwest of North America The Loch Ness Monster, the underwater sea creature said to lurk in the depths of Scotland's Loch Ness. Affectionately known as Nessie. The Mongolian Death Worm, a gigantic worm that allegedly lives in the most remote reaches of the Gobi Desert. Probably wants a friend. The Bunyip, a creature of ambiguous description stated to haunt bodies of water in Australia. Mothman, the classic harbinger of doom. . . . And more! This book also provides guidance on cryptid anatomy so you can create your own, unique cryptids. With both drawing instruction and tales of global folklore to engage your mind, Cryptid Creatures will transport you to a world of shadows and spookinessthat will have you producing "realistic" illustrations with a touch of the fantastical in no time flat. On Today's Show, Ballyraven tells us how to go about drawing some of these scary beasts! She also tells us about some of the lore behind them! And, about her experiences at the Mothman Festival, her podcast, and much much more! Today we discuss the reasons not to stay in your lane, wildlife in the Pacific Northwest, and whether Americans want a handout, or to be left alone. First: Bret responds to critique from Geert Vanden Bossche on his characterization of intramuscular vaccines and their capacity to produce mucosal immunity. Then: how science discovers reality, the risks of reductionism, and a hypothesis that generalists are more immune to corruption than specialists. Then: bald eagles and foxes compete to scavenge seal meat on the shores of the Salish Sea. Meanwhile in Canada, people are told they can't go into the woods. Finally: young, and urban, Americans are more likely than older, or rural Americans, to want a handout from the federal government.*****Our sponsors:Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club: Scrumptious & freshly harvested. The Pacific Northwest is known for its towering trees. Douglas-firs rank as the second highest tree species in the world and can reach heights of over 300 feet, about as tall as the Statue of Liberty. Whether chasing a bird or escaping predators like coyotes, some terrified cats get stuck high up in trees. In Oregon and Washington, arborists aid cats crying for help. The nonprofit Canopy Cat Rescue helps cats throughout Washington. The Oregon Humane Society offers a list of arborists who can safely remove cats from trees. Rick Bunch frequently helps felines in Portland and beyond. Bunch, and Tom Otto, the co-founder of Canopy Cat Rescue, join us with details.
What if everything you've been taught about preparing clients for retirement is only half the story? Fritz Gilbert spent a decade writing over 400 articles about life after work on his blog The Retirement Manifesto. But the real transformation happened after he actually retired. In this episode, Fritz reveals the surprising emotional challenges retirees face — from losing structure and identity to silently wondering, “Is this all there is?” If you want to help clients move from simply retired to truly thriving, this conversation will teach you how to guide clients through the non-financial side of retirement. You'll Learn: The 4 psychological phases of retirement The 90/10 rule of retirement no one prepares you for How Fritz shifted from a saving to spending mindset The #1 mindset that helped him create a thriving life after work The emotional transition most retirees go through and how to prepare for it *To sign up for Brendan's newsletter packed with resources to master the human side of advice → Click Here Resources: Book: Keys to a Successful Retirement by Fritz Gilbert Book: Control Your Retirement Destiny by Dana Anspach Book: Purpose Code by Jordan Grumet Charity: Freedom for Fido Connect with Brendan Frazier: RFG Advisory LinkedIn: Brendan Frazier Connect with Fritz Gilbert: LinkedIn: Fritz Gilbert Website: The Retirement Manifesto About our Guest: Fritz Gilbert is a writer focused on helping people achieve a great retirement. Following his 33-year career in Corporate America, he has dedicated his retirement to writing on the topic and has become one of the leading bloggers on the subject of retirement, with a focus on both the "harder" (financial) and "softer" (lifestyle) issues that are critical to success after crossing "The Starting Line". His award-winning blog, The Retirement Manifesto, captures "the present before it becomes the past" as it chronicles his journey to and through retirement. His large following is primarily comprised of people approaching, or living in, retirement. His first book, Keys to a Successful Retirement, is a summary of the 24 keys he has identified and experienced in his own successful transition to retirement and is a "must-read" for anyone within five years of retirement. Fritz and his wife, Jackie, reside in the mountains of Blue Ridge, Georgia with their four rescue dogs. They enjoy cross-country travel in their RV to visit their daughter and her family in the Pacific Northwest and are active in charitable work in their local community. When he's not writing, Fritz enjoys a focus on physical fitness and spends as much time as possible in the mountains surrounding their retirement cabin. – Content here is for illustrative purposes and general information only. Hello to you listening in Tillamook, Oregon!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. Our Pacific Northwest summers are a generous Mother Nature break from the cold, damp darkness of the November to May Rain Festival here on the island. Don't get me wrong: we know how to keep ourselves warm, dry, comfortable, and engaged in the 6 months of fall and winter; but we appreciate the summer months to the fullest even when rain showers interrupt our plans.Something Miguel de Cervantes wrote about squalls and good weather reminds me that all is impermanent, nothing endures forever and we will see our way clear - in time: “All these squalls to which we have been subjected are signs that the weather will soon improve and things will go well for us, because it is not possible for the bad or the good to endure forever, and from this it follows that since the bad has lasted so long the good is close at hand.” [Miguel de Cervantes - Don Quioxte]Question: How are you inviting the good that is close at hand? You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! You will have wonderful company as we continue to walk our lives together. I was thrilled to interview Themba Dayton, whom I was introduced to by Elena Joy Thurston, a past guest of the show and a friend. When I learned about Themba's track record in building and guiding diverse teams, I immediately had a ton of questions for him. This conversation is a treasure trove of sage advice around the power of diversity in professional environments and why diverse teams will always have a leg up, no matter the state of the world. Themba Dayton is a 30-year insurance professional in the employee benefits industry, living in the Pacific Northwest. In an industry that is known for being overwhelmingly male, Themba has been a part of and has had the honor of leading extremely diverse and dynamic teams that have been innovative and successful in their roles. Teams at their best are varied, have full engagement, and the group is committed to the success of the whole more often than the success of the individual. In his current role, Themba looks for opportunities to ensure all voices are allowed to be heard, to allow for more robust discussions, and to pave the way for more meaningful outcomes. Listen in to hear Themba share: How to leverage diversity to build effective and successful teams His secret in helping each member of diverse teams feel seen, heard, held, and valued - getting to know each person individually, developing strong 1:1 relationships How he is sensitive to his industry being “pale, male, and stale” and how he, as a Black man, leads with this sensitivity in mind How he looks for opportunities to amplify women's voices How highlighting someone else not only amplifies their voice but also helps you shine brighter as a strong leader Links Mentioned: Connect with Themba on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/themba-dayton-ab956b5/ Register for Sara's October Influence & Ignite Retreat for Women Business Owners: saradean.com/retreat Hire me to speak: saradean.com/speaking Coach with me: https://saradean.com/executive-coaching-services Connect with me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/saradeanspeaks Watch Shameless Leadership episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@saradeanspeaks Interested in becoming a sponsor of the Shameless Mom Academy? LAZARUS BLACK Writers of the Future Winner – Biography Lazarus Black is an American author of genre fiction living under the shadow of a Pacific Northwest volcano with three Goddesses, his wife and two daughters. “Psychic Poker” is Lazarus's first sale, but hardly his last. It juxtaposes poker, the synthesis of probability and human behavior, with psychic powers, the solution to both probability and the chaos of free will. What if every player is psychic? What if no player has an advantage? What if their lives are at stake? But the strength of the story is in the reluctant main character: Tyson Young, a middle-aged Aussie with an acute wit. Lazarus writes from life. His stories are inspired by the diverse communities he has lived in, plus friends and family across the globe. He specifically attacks stereotypes and reinvents tropes to reflect authentic experiences that are sometimes stranger than fiction. He once earned a free funeral until the mortician learned his name was Lazarus and a good laugh was had by all (bystanders included). A true lover of learning, Lazarus has traversed North America dozens of times, has been a professional artist, advertising creative, software developer, database designer, epigrapher, executive, educator, inventor, game designer, pool hustler, heathen clergyman, machinist's apprentice, glass blower, scholar, actor, many other roles, and now published author of fiction. He hopes you enjoy “Psychic Poker” and look forward to reading more from him in the future. For more about Lazarus go to www.lazarus.black ROBERT J. In this episode, we talk with New York–based visual artist Dakota Gearhart about her four-part animated video series Life Touching Life, currently featured in the Projected Ecologies program within the exhibition Pulsar at MUCA in Mexico City. We discuss the show's algae femme host Tiffany—part toxic bloom, part human—who travels through time to interview scientists, poets, and caretakers about reimagining relationships between human and non-human life. Dakota shares how humor, multiplicity, and collaboration shape the series, blending found footage, analog techniques, and diverse animation styles into speculative, eco-futurist narratives. We also dive into her sculptural practice, the challenges of large-scale installation, the translation of Life Touching Life into multiple languages, and her upcoming public art commission for Flushing Meadows Park. Plus, we hear about the zine that brings the series off-screen and into readers' hands.Dakota Gearhart is a New York-based visual artist born in Arizona, raised in Florida, and educated in the Pacific Northwest. At the dawn of the twentieth-century, major advances in science and technology brought incredible change to the field of medicine, enhancing and extending the lives of millions. Yet at the same time, a lax regulations and minimal oversight made it possible for countless medical grifters to get rich offering quack medical solutions to everything from whooping cough to cancer, sometimes at the expense of their patient's lives. When Linda Hazzard opened her sanitarium, the Institute of Natural Therapeutics at Wilderness Heights, in Olalla, Washington in the first decade of the 1900s, she claimed her rigid fasting and elimination approach to dieting was a miracle cure for a variety of illnesses, both trivial and serious. For years, Hazzard operated what amounted to a health retreat for the wealthy, without any oversight from the state or federal agencies. In the end, Hazzard's starvation cure resulted in the deaths of over a dozen people and her arrest and trial for manslaughter, but through all of it, she maintained it was a viable treatment—standing by her methods up until they ended her own life.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesHines, Terrence. 1997. Jason Rantz, host of The Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red 770AM and author of What's Killing America, joined The Guy Benson Show today to discuss his station's brand-new rebrand to "Seattle Red" and why it reflects a pushback against the Pacific Northwest's clear left-leaning media bias. Rantz broke down how radical voices like New York's Zohran Mamdani aren't outliers but emblematic of a national trend among Democrats, including in his own city of Seattle. Guy and Jason also torched the latest woke initiative to force self-driving cars to account for "intersectional equity" - listen to the full interview below! Learn more about your ad choices. Hello to you, Annie Jesperson & Nathaniel Talbot listening from Deep Harvest Farm on Whidbey Island!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (& a bit more goodness) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. Every week I head over to Deep Harvest Farm from July through Thanksgiving to fill my basket with organic produce as a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) member. Early in day the CSA members get an email with a list of what's been harvested, a recipe or two and a musing by Farmer Annie like this one, The Fallacy of Sunk Costs. Maybe like me you'll recognize yourself in her words: The Fallacy of Sunk Costs [~ by Annie Jesperson]“Sometimes a benefit and other times a detriment of long farm days are the countless hours alone with one's thoughts. A morning spent pruning tomatoes and dragging irrigation lines offers opportunity to practice deep breathing, mindfully listen to the sparrow songs or to stew on last night's sub-optimal conversation with your sister while mentally spiraling about foreign affairs. There's time for it all! We spend many moments with the gentle coo of the wind but also keep our brains stimulated with a wide assortment of podcasts. A few of us love "The Gray Area with Sean Illing," which is a philosophy show that covers culture, politics, and other big conversation topics.I'm pretty sure it was here, I learned about one of my now favorite philosophical principles that comes in handy most farm days and in the rest of life, too. It's called “The fallacy of sunk costs.” Anyone else a fan?? This concept expresses the mental error in one's tendency to keep going on an endeavor just for the sake of finishing it. You've invested some time, money, and energy so you want to complete a task even if the costs of completing it outweigh the positives. It's knowing when to cut losses and till in those overly weedy carrots, shrug your shoulders and leave the last 10% of the giant fruit tree unpruned or close the book you're not loving and pick up something else. There's nothing to gain by doing otherwise!Every day, we look at our mammoth to-do list and decide what's a priority and what just isn't going to happen and not infrequently we kiss some hard work goodbye for the sake of future plantings and more vital tasks. Prioritizing and letting go might be a farmer's most important skills as well as life talents, too, aiding us in the efficiency, time, productivity and happiness of Life!”Click HERE to visit Deep Harvest Farm, learn about the farm & its farmers, sign up for the Seed Newsletter for hot garden tips, farm news and seed discounts, join the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm Share, AND shop the 170 varieties of Certified Organic, Open-Pollinated, & Non-GMO seed proven to thrive in the Pacific Northwest: FLOWER SEEDS ~ VEGETABLE & HERB SEEDSThank you for listening! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" In this STS special Host Joel Waldman brings us up-to-date on the latest emerging news in the 3 active manhunts. And Police need our help. A $17,500 reward is being offered for his capture. In Montana, 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown, a former Army veteran, is accused of walking into the Owl Bar in Anaconda and gunning down four locals in cold blood. Authorities believe he escaped into the wilderness with stolen camping gear. He remains at large, armed and dangerous. In Washington, 32-year-old survivalist Travis Caleb Decker is accused of killing his three young daughters — Paityn (9), Evelyn (8), and Olivia (5) — during a court-ordered visitation. Their bodies were found near his abandoned truck. He has military survival training and may be navigating the Pacific Northwest trail system. All three men are considered armed, dangerous, and capable of further violence. If you see them, call 911 immediately. Subscribe for the latest updates as these stories continue to unfold. Send us a textIn this illuminating episode, Matt the CEO of Chroma, shares how moving from sunny Florida to the Pacific Northwest led to a personal health crisis—and how that journey awakened him to the profound role light plays in mental and physical well-being.We dive deep into:
1997. While Brian frolics somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, Jason brings in cyber-sleuth Dave Bittner for a jam-packed episode covering everything from Gen X's slow descent into obscurity to furries, feds, and face-scanning your way into porn. The guys start with a salute to the late, great Tom Lehrer—a math nerd with a piano and zero tolerance for BS—before diving into the avalanche of cyber screwups plaguing today's digital circus. The biggest spill? The so-called “safe” dating app Tea just doxxed its entire user base—because who needs privacy when you've got bad Firebase settings from 2017? Meanwhile, teens are befriending chatbots, Microsoft is issuing pink slips via PowerPoint, and Meta might be training its AI on stolen porn. Add in farmers installing turnstiles in the Dolomites to keep influencers off their grass, age verification laws that Norman Reedus can bypass with a JPEG, and Tesla diners turning into 24/7 neighbor hellscapes, and yeah—it's just another week on the internet. If you're a Gen Xer feeling invisible, underpaid, and over it, congrats—you're not alone. This episode is a full buffet of schadenfreude, digital paranoia, and good old-fashioned grump. Pour a cup of whatever's not boiling, and tune in for the roast.
