Jared shares how the new season was built, why they focused on credible first person witnesses, and how they tried to keep the tone objective without turning encounters into cheap sensationalism.      Clark County resident Wayne Sutton was only 7 or 8 years old, he says, when his father, who worked in the logging industry, helped him buy his first chainsaw. That was 60 years ago. Today, Sutton is the founder and curator of Wayne’s Chainsaw Museum, a private museum located a few miles outside of Amboy in Clark County that is free and open to visitors by appointment.    The Columbian recently profiled Sutton and his museum which is big enough to display only about half of the 4,000 or 5,000 chainsaws he has amassed over the years and continues to collect, or have donated to him. Sutton opened the museum in 2000 when he started working for Stihl, the world’s leading maker of gas-powered chainsaws.    Sutton retired from Stihl in 2024. Although his museum boasts hundreds of models made by his former employer, it also showcases other brands and rare, decades-old examples that serve as a time capsule of the evolution of this power tool that is inextricably tied to the logging history of the Pacific Northwest. Sutton joins us to share his love of chainsaws and future plans for sharing his massive collection with more enthusiasts.

Larry Gross | The Intermodal Industry – Past, Present, and Future

    Freightvine

In this podcast, Larry Gross, a long-time industry expert and 2024 Silver Kingpin Award winner, reflects on a career that began before the deregulation of the transportation industry in 1980. Gross spent over two decades developing Road Railer technology, which featured reinforced 53-foot trailers that could act as rail cars through the attachment of detachable rail running gear. Although this innovation was eventually supplanted by the 53-foot domestic container on double-stack rail, Gross notes that "ignorance is the mother of innovation," as he likely would never have started the project had he known the true nature of the obstacles ahead. Gross describes the current relationship between freight modes by stating that truckload is the "dog" and intermodal is the "tail," meaning the health and movements of the trucking market inevitably govern the domestic intermodal sector. Currently, the industry is split between international ISO containers and domestic 53-foot containers, with approximately 60% to 65% of all U.S. intermodal volume tied directly to international trade. While intermodal service is currently as good as it has ever been, its market share has remained stuck in the 6% range for domestic moves. This stagnation is partly due to Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR), a strategy focused on reducing costs and operating massive trains, which often restricts intermodal service to only the largest, longest-haul markets. Looking toward the future, Gross is excited by autonomous, battery-powered rail cars that move in platoons. This technology could allow intermodal to reach shorter-haul markets by removing the need to accumulate giant trainloads. However, he warns that autonomous trucking poses a significant threat to rail; by removing the driver, trucking could offer team-driver service levels at costs lower than a single driver, making it even harder for intermodal to compete. Ultimately, Gross views intermodal as a "good enough story," where the service must be reliable and roughly 15% cheaper than trucking to remain an attractive alternative for shippers. Top Three Takeaways 1. The Two-Thirds Rule of Competitiveness: As a practical rule of thumb, intermodal can typically compete with trucking if the rail portion of the trip represents at least two-thirds of the total door-to-door miles. This ratio determines the "drainage area" around a terminal where rail remains economically viable despite drayage costs. 2. Diversified Port Strategies: Importers have shifted from a West Coast-centric model to a "four-corner" or "five-corner" strategy, diversifying volume across the Pacific Northwest, Southern California, the Gulf, the Southeast, and the Northeast. This shift has hurt intermodal because the shorter lengths of haul from East Coast ports naturally favor trucking. 3. The Tension Between PSR and Growth: While Precision Scheduled Railroading has significantly improved railroad profitability and operating ratios, its focus on cost-cutting and large-scale operations acts as an impediment to gaining market share. By restricting service to major long-haul corridors, the railroads may be hitting a ceiling for potential growth. Larry Gross suggests that major shifts in the supply chain are like tectonic plate movements: they are incredibly slow and inexorable, meaning you cannot fight them but must simply learn to accommodate them. James Cook is one of those explorers where upon hearing his name, you gotta take a beat and try to decide if he's a real person or if you're thinking of Captain Hook from Peter Pan or Captain Cook from Breaking Bad. But don't sleep on Jimmy cause the man knew how to quest. Starting out from humble origins cutting his teeth in the coal shipping game, he learned his way around a ship and around the water. Eventually the Royal Navy came calling and he was sent to the new world during the Seven Years War and found he had a talent for cartography. A few years of honing his skills later and James found himself charged with locating the great southern continent that balanced the hemispheres. His voyages would take him around the world several times, seeing places like Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, the Pacific Northwest of the United States and Canada, both circles (Antarctic and Arctic), and many others. Compared with other explorers of his era he was on the lighter side when it came to the mistreatment of indigenous people so he's got that going for him, which is nice. This week, Cole and Bryan head to the Pacific Northwest with a seriously impressive pour from Woodinville, Washington — Woodinville 8yr 100% Rye Whiskey. It's a high-age, all-rye release that's been a long time coming, and the boys are more than ready to see what it's all about.   Before diving into the glass, they warm things up with talk of trips without kids, the eternal debate between Cuban sandwiches vs. Reubens, and a little background on Pacific Northwest rye whiskey and why the region deserves more love.   On Whiskey World News, Bryan breaks down the Breaking Bourbon release calendar, giving a look at what's coming down the pipeline and what might be worth keeping an eye on.   And for “What Whiskey Would You Choose?”, things take a hard left turn away from whiskey altogether with a very important question: Which theme park would you rather go to — Disney or Universal?   Grab a pour, pick a side, and settle in for another fun, flavor-packed episode.

Whether you are ready to sell tomorrow or five years from now, understanding the mechanics of a successful exit is crucial for every founder. This week on The Exit, Steve sits down with Gregory Kovsky, President and CEO of IBA, the Pacific Northwest's oldest business brokerage firm. With over 25 years of experience and thousands of transactions under his belt, Gregory breaks down the complex game theory of M&A. We dive deep into the specific timing of when to sell, how to "run through the tape" to maximize your multiple, and why selling a business actually requires making four separate sales to four different stakeholders. If you want to avoid leaving money on the table or getting killed in due diligence, this episode is your playbook. In This Episode, You'll Learn: The "Four Sales" Theory: Why you aren't just selling to the buyer—you also have to sell the CPA, the Attorney, and the Bank. The Two Prime Windows: Why Jan-June and Labor Day-Thanksgiving are the golden seasons for M&A activity. Valuation Multiples 101: How to move the needle from a 4x to a 7x multiple by diminishing risk. The Fatal Mistake: Why failing to disclose material facts (like a competitor moving in across the street) is the fastest way to invite litigation. Pre-Exit Hygiene: Simple fixes—from website refreshes to cleaning up the "boneyard"—that create a strong first impression. The "Marathon" Mindset: Why you must keep your foot on the gas even during negotiations. Timestamps: (02:00) From veterinary clinics to M&A: Gregory's journey. Mr. Kovsky has successfully negotiated the purchase & sale of over 300 privately held companies and family businesses in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, California, North Carolina, and Massachusetts since joining IBA as a mergers & acquisitions intermediary in 1994. Hops have dominated the beer conversation for decades. Modern beer culture has been built on the back of their vast trellises, the majority of which today stand in Yakima, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Many North American hops, including Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe, could arguably be called legacy varieties, such has been the length and size of their impact on the beer industry. Even Citra, which was first commercially released in 2007 and is now the most cultivated hop variety in the world, is approaching 20 years of production. Without them, the beer we know and love today would smell and taste very differently indeed. But as much as these hops have shaped beer as we know it, there has been no rest for hop merchants, or indeed the brewers who use their products day in, day out. There is a constant demand for new varieties offering up new flavours and aromas. This demand comes in part from drinkers, and indeed brewers themselves, but largely this constant development of new hop varieties—which can take up to a decade, sometimes more—is driven by the hop industry itself.Think about it—every year sees billions of pounds worth of hops harvested across the hop growing regions of the word, encompassing hundreds, if not thousands of different varieties. Hop merchants are not only seeking that x-factor in terms of flavour, but they're also looking for agronomic viability, and, indeed, strong profit margins. Hops can be notoriously difficult to grow, so while breeders are trying to figure out what's going to make a new variety taste great, they're also looking at other qualities like disease resistance, how much water input a variety needs to survive in a changing climate, and so on.Krush—which until recently was known under its development name: HBC586—is a great example of this. In terms of its flavour and aroma it's a riot of ripe mango, juicy peach and sun-ripened orange, but in terms of its agronomics it also requires less inputs than older varieties, making it more economical and more sustainable to produce. If the sound of this has got your interest piqued, then you're going to love our latest podcast. Recorded live at FyneFest 2025, in this episode Matthew chats to Robbie Harrigan, a UK-based sales representative for Yakima Chief Hops, plus Mark Cotterill of Beak Brewery in Lewes, and Brett Pemberton of Manchester's Pomona Island. Together we chat about some exciting new hop varieties, including Krush, and taste the exciting results alongside a live audience. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Get ‘Er Brewed. Kate Wolf and Eric Newman speak with Caroline Fraser about her new book, Murderland: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers. Taking an ecological approach to true crime, the book explores how decades of industrial pollution from large smelting plants in the Pacific Northwest may have shaped the social and environmental conditions that coincided with an unusually high number of serial killers in the region during the 1970s and 1980s, including Ted Bundy, Randall Woodfield, and others. Fraser discusses how she came to draw connections between environmental contamination and these terrifying killers, while also considering the wider human costs of unchecked corporate power and deregulation on vulnerable communities.

Ted Bundy is often remembered as charming, intelligent, and dangerously persuasive—a serial killer who outsmarted investigators and manipulated everyone around him. But how much of that story is myth?In this introductory episode of Ted Bundy for the Defense, we set the stage for a three-part series that examines Bundy not through the lens of legend, but through the courtroom—where his greatest gamble wasn't murder, but his decision to represent himself.Bundy believed he was smarter than his attorneys, smarter than prosecutors, and smarter than the system itself. That belief would lead him to take control of his own defense in multiple trials across three states—Utah, Colorado, and Florida—with consequences he never fully grasped. We'll begin by debunking some of the most persistent myths surrounding Ted Bundy, including his so-called charisma, his alleged brilliance, and the idea that he was always one step ahead of law enforcement. We'll also preview the most disturbing and surreal moments from his trials—moments where Bundy used cross-examinations to force witnesses to describe the aftermath of his crimes in graphic detail, stunning jurors and revealing far more about Bundy than he intended. This series isn't about glorifying a killer. It's about exposing how arrogance, control, and self-delusion helped lead Ted Bundy to the electric chair.Coming Up in This Series:Part One: We trace Bundy's crimes from the early 1970s through his 1976 Utah trial for the attempted kidnapping of Carol DaRonch—the first time Bundy insisted on defending himself in court, and the first major crack in his self-image.Part Two: As investigators in the Pacific Northwest quietly connect the dots between multiple murders, Bundy is arrested in Colorado for the murder of Caryn Campbell. Given access to a law library while preparing his own defense, Bundy makes a decision that allows him to escape—again—and flee to Florida.Part Three: We follow Bundy to Florida, where his violence escalates with the Chi Omega sorority house murders, the attack on Cheryl Thomas, and the murder of twelve-year-old Kimberly Leach. The series concludes with Bundy's capital murder trials in 1979 and 1980, where his courtroom performances ultimately become his undoing.Ted Bundy for the Defense explores what happens when a defendant becomes his own worst enemy—and when belief in one's own brilliance proves fatal.Sponsors: This episode was brought to you by:Completing the Puzzle - Go to CompletingthePuzzle.com and use code OUAC for $10 off your first puzzle subscription box or gift card.
