Welcome to the Peaks Island Radio podcast, where I talk with islanders and people of interest to the island about arts, culture, current events, and more. In this episode, I speak with Adrian Sutherland, an Indigenous Roots Rocker from Attawapiskat. I discovered Adrian's latest album, Precious Diamonds, on Bandcamp and was immediately captivated by its freshness and depth of feeling. As his website says: "One listen to Adrian Sutherland and you'll know he's unlike anyone else...he melds rock, roots, folk and blues, drawing inspiration from his life, the land, and his language and culture. Adrian's sophomore solo album Precious Diamonds was recorded in Nashville with former GRAMMY winner Colin Linden, and released in 2024. It won Best Americana Album from the 2025 World Entertainment Awards in Los Angeles, is nominated at the 2025 JUNO Awards, and was selected one of the “Top 100 Albums of 2024” by CKUA Radio. It features two songs in Cree, making the first time Adrian is making music in his first language. Lead single Notawe (Father) reached #1 on the internationally recognized Indigenous Music Countdown, and was named one of the “Top 100 Songs of 2023” by CBC Music. Adrian is presently writing a book for Penguin Random House Canada about his extraordinary life in the North. One of the only professional recording artists who lives in a remote fly-in First Nation, he carries authentic and insightful first-hand perspective on many important issues. During this time of reconciliation, Adrian is hopeful for Canadians to walk together in love and respect.Adrian and I cover a lot of ground in this conversation, touching on his rise in music along with the challenges he faced, what it is like to live on his ancestral lands while also having a recording career, and the many social issues Adrian is passionate about. Yola is a singer/songwriter and actress. She released her solo debut album in 2019, which was nominated for 4 Grammys, including Best New Artist and Best Americana Album, and Rolling Stone named it one of the best country albums of the year. But the thing is, Yola's music career wasn't new, and her background wasn't in country music. She's from Bristol in the UK, and starting back in the early 2000s, she was a vocalist recording tracks for DJs and electronic music producers. In January 2025, Yola put out an EP called My Way. And as you'll hear her explain in this episode, a lot of her new music is motivated by wanting to assert her identity beyond the Americana and country music boundaries. In addition to her music, she's also acting – she played Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the 2022 film Elvis, and she starred on Broadway in the musical Hadestown. For this episode, I talked to Yola about her song “Symphony,” along with co-writer and co-producer Sean Douglas. Yola and Sean trace the journey of the song “Symphony,” and, along with it, Yola traces her own journey, too.For more info, visit songexploder.net/yola.

Rhiannon Giddens returns to SHEROES exactly three years since host, producer, and creator Carmel Holt launched the show as a syndicated radio hour for public radio (November 17, 2020) with her as its very first featured interview guest. As SHEROES Radio celebrates its third anniversary, Carmel welcomes the multi-Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, artist, composer, author, and activist Rhiannon Giddens back to discuss her third solo outing You're The One, a week following its Grammy nominations for Best Americana Album and a second for Best American Roots Performance for a song from that album, making her a 10-time Grammy nominee. In this wide-ranging conversation, Rhiannon reflects on the non-linear path taken from opera student at Oberlin to becoming a Pulitzer Prize-winning opera composer, what all the accolades and awards mean to her, and the importance of being a good ancestor in all she does.
What is Americana music? Is it a genre? A community? A refuge? Twenty four years after the founding of the Americana Music Association and thirteen years since the first Grammy was awarded for Best Americana Album, defining “Americana” remains tricky. In our experience, the most common answer has been “you know it when you hear it.” However you define it, however, there is one thing everyone agrees on: Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell are Americana legends. In this episode, recorded in front of a live audience in Nashville, TN, Emmylou and Rodney discuss their musical careers, how they became associated with Americana music, and what Americana means to them. Bob too shares his musical journey both before and after joining the Avett Brothers and the ways that genre (Americana and otherwise) has been part of that story. Bob, Gary and I would like to thank Paul Lohr at New Frontier Touring for helping us get such incredible guests for the show, Adam Botner at Riverside Revival for making both the live show and the audio on this episode sound so good, Austin Sawyer of Drumming Bird & Annie DiRusso for opening the show with their incredible talent, and everyone who came out to make this such a special night. We'd also like to give a special thanks to Jefferson Cowie for helping us prepare for the show. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher. Live audio recording and mixing by Adam Botner.
This week, we call into Nashville to speak to one of the preeminent and most prolific singer-songwriters of our time, Courtney Marie Andrews. Born in Arizona, Andrews first started singing at Phoenix-area karaoke bars with her mom before setting out to see the country in Greyhound busses as a teenager, finding a place in bands like Jimmy Eat World with her signature high-aching voice and talent on guitar and piano. Writing in fiery spurts (she mentions on the taping that thirty new songs emerged just last month), Andrews has put out eight records and counting, beginning with 2008's Urban Myths and culminating in 2022's lush and cautiously hopeful Loose Future. “These Are The Good Old Days” finds her trying to be present in a world of relentless distraction and hidden pain – and while the chord changes and harmonies harken back to 1950s girl group vibes, there is always a searching, aching energy roiling underneath. If you feel like you missed out seeing touchstone genre-defying singers like Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris in their 1970s roots-pop primes, fear not: it can be argued that Andrews is leading the newest wave of honey-voiced performers who just happen to be writing the most honest, heart-stopping work in the expanding Americana universe. Many first heard her with the acclaimed, gorgeously direct Honest Life in 2016 which helped develop her following, especially in Europe, and the mournful and cathartic Old Flowers which earned her a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. We all go through painful breakups and have to learn how to process the fallout. But what Andrews can do with the thorny moments most of us would want to forget, may be her superpower. “I'm not used to feeling good,” Courtney Marie Andrews sings with a weary smile on “Change My Mind” towards the finale of Loose Future. And yet, as she penned many of these timeless tunes in a small cabin on Cape Cod during the height of the lockdowns, sometimes realizing that you can be happy after all is that big first step that can get your future to start opening up. Today my friend Marcus King stops by the show to talk all about his new album Young Blood coming out Aug 26th on American Recordings. I have loved this mans music from the first day I heard him and can not stop telling people about him. Marcus and I dive into whats been going on with him over the last couple of years including working with Dan Auerbach again in the studio, co-writing with Desmond Child and our Rock and Comedy tour that is about to start in Sept. King has been an outlier from the very beginning. A fourth generation musician from Greenville, SC, who learned guitar at age 3 from his blues rock musician father Marvin King. He navigated troublesome school years to quickly become known as one of the most promising young artists of our time. He followed breakout success with The Marcus King Band, with his Auerbach produced 2020 solo album debut, El Dorado. It garnered a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Americana Album” and critical praise from The New York Times to NPR's Weekend Edition. With unparalleled performance prowess and a dynamic live show, King has sold out historic venues from The Beacon to The Filmore. He has opened for Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet and Nathaniel Rateliff and graced the bills of Stagecoach, Fuji Rock, Rock Werchter and more. He also recently launched his own custom Gibson guitar and signature Orange guitar amplifier, the MK Ultra, which sold out before it even hit the stores. King recently announced a massive headline US tour, with dates through September and October 2022 supporting the release of his forthcoming solo album, Young Blood. He will be taking his stadium sized sound to esteemed venues across the U.S, including two nights at venues such as New York's Beacon Theatre and Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Neal Francis and Ashland Craft support select dates, and the tour features comedy by Dean Del Ray. Tickets on sale now.

Allison Russell has been writing incredible folk-rooted songs for around 20 years with her bands Po' Girl, Birds of Chicago, and Our Native Daughters. But it was her solo debut in 2021, Outside Child, that finally broke through and gained her a taller platform and a wider audience. Coming up on this year's Grammy Awards, where Russell is nominated in three categories—Best American Roots Performance, Best American Roots Song, and Best Americana Album—we decided to share a special Grammy edition of the Why We Write podcast. This conversation about songwriting, and all the parts of life that touch and influence it, was recorded at the end of 2021. Russell's internet was interrupted, so she had to run to a nearby coffee shop for the recording, which explains some of the background noise. In a way, the bustle around her as she talks about what inspires her incredible songwriting, makes sense. Much bustle has been swirling around her for the past year. Whether or not she takes home Grammy Awards, Outside Child was widely lauded as one of the best recordings of last year, and we look forward to what else she has to bring over the next 20 years. So press play an enjoy this episode of Why We Write with Allison Russell.
Welcome to Roadcase!! Madison Cunningham is a native of Southern California and a two-time Grammy nominated artist whose latest effort, "Wednesday," is in the running for Best Folk Album for the 2022 Grammys. And to further solidify her genre-spanning artistry, she was nominated in the Best Americana Album category for her "Where Are We Now" album in 2019. Her development as an artist -- having been homeschooled in a fairly religious household, and not having been exposed to popular music heroes until her late teens -- gave Madison a unique perspective to build her guitar skills and artistry from a place all her own. Her music -- an eclectic mix of rock, classical elements, folk, and jazz -- gains even further texture by the strength of her gorgeous voice. Telling her own story in her songs, and working with such greats as Chris Thile and Andrew Bird along the way, Madison continues to be an integral part of the "new Laurel Canyon sound" that has been influencing many amazing artists from within the heart of the Los Angeles music scene for years now. Madison is a true hard-working artist with an uber-strong work ethic and a heart of gold. So hop on the Roadcase bus for this episode and learn more about Madison Cunningham. It's gonna be a great ride!!For more information: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
Allison Russell & Aoife O'Donovan talk about the songwriting process as full-time moms. Hint: there's not a process.“We're working moms, so the best undisturbed time is between midnight and 4am.”—Allison Russell“I'm not the ‘lounge around' type of person. There's not one wasted hour in my day.” —Aoife O'DonovanRussell and O'Donovan are full-time songwriters of course, but they're moms first. So what you won't hear in our conversation is how wonderful it is to wake up, have a leisurely cup of coffee, lounge on the couch with a guitar, and write undisturbed. Songwriting ritual? What's that? What you will hear is the phrase “we're working moms” several times from both of them. You'll hear how Russell writes between midnight and 4am because it's often the only alone time she has. You'll hear how she develops melodies and plays beats on her body while she's in the shower—and how the shower was where she went to cry when she was a new mother. You'll hear how O'Donovan gets so many of her song ideas while she's running; sure, exercise spurs creativity, but it's also alone time. You'll hear how the practicalities of being a parent and full-time songwriter involve driving kids places and being without childcare and trying to help with schoolwork—all while trying to write an album. And you'll hear how during the early stages of the pandemic they were managing school lessons over Zoom, and how in the heck can you write songs when your kids are home and your time is someone else's? It's no wonder O'Donovan told me there are no wasted hours in her day and that she writes best while her body is in motion. Because when you're a working mom, when is it not in motion? Despite their limited time, both women have put out fantastic music recently. Russell's first solo album Outside Child has been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Americana Album, and the single “Nightflyer” has been nominated for two GRAMMYs in Best Americana Roots Performance & Best Americana Roots Song. O'Donovan has a fantastic new album Age of Apathy. The song “Prodigal Daughter” features Allison Russell.
SUMMARYOn this episode of Songcraft we're joined by three-time Grammy nominee and two-time Americana Music Awards nominee Allison Russell. She'll discuss her debut solo album, Outside Child, her long journey in the music industry leading to this moment, and her escape from childhood trauma to find resilience, joy, and healing through the art of music. PART ONEPaul and Scott discuss the worst songs they love, pay tribute to the late songwriting legend Dallas Frazier, and revisit the idea of musical discovery's happy accidents. PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with three-time Grammy nominee Allison RussellABOUT ALLISON RUSSELLCanadian-born singer-songwriter Allison Russell released her debut solo album Outside Child in 2021, but has been part of the music world for many years. She formed the band Po' Girl with Trish Klein of The Be Good Tanyas in 2003 before launching the duo Birds of Chicago with her partner JT Nero in 2012. In 2018, she joined the musical collective Our Native Daughters, which also includes Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Amythyst Kia. Outside Child is a highly personal album chronicling Russell's formative experiences as a survivor of physical and sexual abuse, while highlighting themes of hopefulness and resilience that have resonated with fans and critics. The project earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album, while the single “Nighflyer” earned Allison nominations for Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song. Additionally, she has been nominated for four Canadian Folk Music Awards, two Americana Music Awards, and has performed on stages ranging from the Grand Ole Opry to the National Museum of African American Music to Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Brandi Carlile. Allison recently inked a deal with Flatiron Books, a division of Macmillan, which will release her forthcoming memoir.
Jackson Browne's "Downhill From Everywhere" has received a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. We revisit our conversation with Browne from July. And, this year's real estate market was a wild ride marked by low inventory, bidding wars and prices surging to historic highs. Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors, shares housing market predictions for 2022.
On this episode of Comes A Time, Mike and Oteil talk with Oliver and Chris Wood of The Wood Brothers! You'll hear about their familial musical roots and the unique artistic connection that they share as brothers, the importance of the collective healing process that our society must go through after COVID-19, and Oteil and Oliver talk about why they each think that their most recent tours were some of the best they've ever had. Gary Hector should be on your music radar. He's up for consideration for first round GRAMMY voting for his 'National Trash' album under the category of Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Performance for his single 'Today I Ride Alone'. It's an album that forges it's own path between the worlds of Americana, country and western and calypso music. The album was crowdfunded by Gary through support from the internet and worked with Martin 'Mice ' Raymond in Trinidad then off to Kansas to producer Sean Bartholomew a long time friend and someone Gary trusts with his music . For that unmissable pedal steel sound Gary was introduced to John Heinrich with truly stunning vocals from Nikki Nelson. Love the podcast? Then by all means feel free to share the news with your friends on social media and help the show grow!
SUMMARYOur guest on this episode of Songcraft is Yola. The acclaimed British singer and songwriter has released two albums on Dan Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound label, both of which were produced by the Black Keys' frontman. She was nominated for four Grammy awards for 2019, including Best New Artist, and is a sometime collaborator with the supergroup The Highwomen alongside Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Marren Morris, and Amanda Shires. Yola joins us to chat about her life as a songwriter and artist. PART ONEPaul and Scott discuss the history of the Best New Artist Grammy category, including a few surprising tidbits of trivia.PART TWO Our in-depth interview with YolaABOUT YOLASinger-songwriter Yola made a major splash at the 2020 Grammy ceremony with four nominations: Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song for her composition “Faraway Look,” and Best New Artist in the general category alongside Lizzo, Lil Nas X, and Billie Eilish. Dubbed by many as a "country soul singer," the British artist's breakthrough came when she teamed up with Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach in Nashville to write and record her debut solo album, Walk Through Fire, on which she and Auerbach collaborated with a roster of Southern soul songwriters including Dan Penn and Memphis studio legend Bobby Wood. She was subsequently nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year and Album of the Year at the 2019 Americana Music Honors & Awards. Though Yola's emergence might have seemed like an overnight success to some, she'd been working in music in the UK as a vocalist and collaborator with DJs and producers, including Massive Attack. In 2009 she was a writer on “Hopes and Fears,” a single by UK singer Will Young, and in 2013 she co-wrote the Top 10 UK hit “Turn Back Time” by Sub Focus, on which she also sang an uncredited vocal. Additionally, Yola sang lead on the Top 5 UK pop hit “Won't Look Back” by Duke Dumont. In the wake of her success with the Walk Through Fire album, Yola reteamed with Auerbach for her most recent release, Stand For Myself, featuring highlights such as “Diamond Studded Shoes” and “Dancing Away in Tears.” Her accolades continue, having won Artist of the Year honors at the 2020 UK Americana Awards and earning a 2021 nomination from the CMA for the International Achievement Award. Earlier this month she played a sold out show with Chris Stapleton at Madison Square Garden.

SUMMARY:Our guest on this episode of Songcraft is Georgia native and Best Americana Album Grammy nominee Brent Cobb. The self-described songwriter-singer joins us to chat about his dual career as an artist and as a behind-the-scenes tunesmith for Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, and others. PART ONEPaul and Scott dissect the difference between a guitarist and a guitar enthusiast. PART TWO:Scott's in-depth interview with Brent CobbABOUT BRENT COBB:Georgia native Brent Cobb began his music career in Los Angeles working with his cousin Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings. He later found himself in Nashville where he landed a staff songwriting deal and started getting his songs recorded by artists such as Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney, and many others. He eventually signed an artist deal with the Elektra Records imprint Low Country Sound, scoring a Top 20 country album with Shine On Rainy Day. The LP earned a Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album. His follow-up release, Providence Canyon earned Brent a spot touring with Chris Stapleton. His most recent release, Keep ‘Em On They Toes, marks his return to Georgia and his most personal album to date. We recently caught up with Brent via phone where he called in from a semi-quiet corner of a hotel hallway at Disneyworld where he was vacationing with his family.
Aside from having one of the most exquisitely flamboyant names, Giovanni Carnuccio III packs a truly imaginary vision to the picnic. Based right here in Austin, the drummer-producer’s provided percussion for the likes of Turnpike Troubadours and John Fullbright, even racking up a “Best Americana Album” Grammy nomination for the latter. But looking past his […]
Beyond being the final guest of season 1 of The Load Out music podcast, who is John McEuen? He's one of the founding fathers of the alt-country movement, which largely stemmed from a collection of immensely talented southern California musicians in the mid-1960s such as Merle Haggard, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Roger McGuinn, Gram Parsons, Jackson Browne and many others. As co-founder of the Grammy-winning Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB), McEuen has been continually performing since 1964, making more than 40 albums and appearing on some 25 others. Throughout his 55-year-career, he's earned four platinum and five gold recognition awards, numerous Grammy nominations and wins, CMA and ACM awards and an Emmy nomination. He not only taught legendary comic Steve Martin to play the banjo – but produced Martin's album The Crow which won a 2010 Grammy award. Arguably, McEuen's greatest accomplishment may be his instigation of what Rolling Stone called “The most important record to come out of Nashville” and what a 2004 ZAGAT survey called “the most important record in country music”- NGDB's 1972 album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which is in the Grammy Hall of Fame as well as The Library of Congress. In our interview, we cover a range of topics – from the transference of musicians to comics as leading cultural political voices to teaching Steve Martin how to play the banjo, meeting his fellow Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founders in McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, Calif., his relationship with Grateful Dead founders Garcia and Bob Weir, and we even get a lesson on D-tuned "double thumbing" of the five-string banjo The host of the popular “Acoustic Traveler” show on Sirius/XM's The Village, we also discuss McEuen's newest solo record Made in Brooklyn, which won an Independent Music Award for Best Americana Album of 2017, and his book “The Life I've Picked”. So sit back and enjoy a conversation with a legend: John McEuen.
With a long, community-driven career in music, Courtney Marie Andrews’ Grammy nomination for her latest album, ‘Old Flowers,’ feels more than well earned. The eighth studio album from the Nashville-based, Phoenix-born (and at one point Washington-dwelling) singer-songwriter is nominated for Best Americana Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. A breakup record, through and through, the songs on the album convey the heartbreak and loneliness following the end of a relationship. For Live on KEXP, Troy Nelson dives deep into Andrews’ rich musical biography, which traces back to when she was just 15 years old and playing in coffee shops. While the stages may have eventually grown bigger from there, Andrews’ focus on collaboration and community has remained strong. It’s a great reminder that music builds community and community builds musicians. Recorded 10/06/2020. In this conversation William Bell talks about Stax, its collapse and the effect upon the artists, his relationship and sense of loss with regard to Otis Redding and the rest of his career. William Bell( born July 16, 1939) is one of the great soul singers, but is even more prolific as a songwriter. His hit songs include his first hit You Don't Miss Your Water"; 1968's top 10 hit in the UK "Private Number", a duet with Judy Clay. A s a close friend of Otis Redding he also wrote the amazing "A Tribute to a King", which as he sates during the conversation was written for Otis's family and only released as a single because they insisted upon it.As a songwriter he has written many great tracks including the soul/blues cross over Born Under a Bad Sign, a hit for everyone from Cream, B B King, Jimi Hendrix, Etta James to Homer Simpson. In 2017, Bell was awarded a Grammy for Best Americana Album for his record This Is Where I Live. He performed his hit “Born Under a Bad Sign” alongside Gary Clark Jr. at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Bell was also featured on Rolling Stone's “Best of the Grammys” for that year.
James Maddock (born 1962) is a British singer-songwriter and performing musician. Originally from Countesthorpe, Leicester, UK, Maddock has been based in New York City since 2003 after signing with Columbia Records. Maddock's first public success in the U.S. was with his band Wood, whose album "Songs from Stamford Hill" produced multiple songs appearing on the hit TV show "Dawson's Creek," including the Top 5 single "Stay You." Maddock, though British, is largely associated with the Americana music style and has performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile and David Immerglück of the band Counting Crows. Maddock has since become a solo artist with several albums, including "Sunrise on Avenue C" (2009) which won the 2010/11 NY Music Award for Best Americana Album. His latest album "No Time to Cry" (2020) is out now. jamesmaddock.net

Brandi Carlile speaks with host Beth Behrs about spirituality and wisdom found through horses and nature, performing the album 'Blue' for Joni Mitchell, the joy and connection of live music, and singing with Dolly Parton at the Newport Folk Festival. To a lot of folks, the first time they heard of Brandi Carlile was during her showstopping performance of "The Joke" at the 2019 Grammy awards. Brandi walked away with three trophies that night for her record 'By The Way, I Forgive You' (including Best Americana Album), but she's been honing her distinctive voice and building a dedicated audience for over twenty years, all the while staying committed to building a family and community with her band and team. That commitment has made her the godmother of modern American roots music - as a curator of festival stages, interpreter of the legendary artists who came before, and producer and collaborator for a whole new generation of female artists.
Not only is his journey through kidney cancer and depression a powerful story to be told, he continues to inspire lives daily through his music and non-profit, Band Together Pittsburgh. He has learned to powerfully overcome his challenges in life with a positive attitude and holistic approach. John Vento is often called a chameleon in the Pittsburgh music scene; and, while his critics may use the term as a pejorative, Vento views it as a compliment. He understands that they’re motivated by the frustration of their inability to lock him into a specific musical style. After all, the front man for the high-energy, hard-rockin’ bands, The Businessmen, and the Nied’s Hotel Band, is also known for his introspective, brooding solo recordings. John’s 2019 MTS release is “Love, Lust and Other Wreckage.” The album received the IMEA Award for Best Americana Album. His single, “Rainbows And Lightning” reached the Top 20 on iTunes Canada charts, receiving national and international airplay and charting. His follow-ups, “Baby Blues,” “Humble Way,” and “I Hope I Don’t Fall in Love with You” (Tom Waits cover) have also received national airplay chart attention. His latest single, “Well Yeah Maybe” reached #1 on the South African iTunes charts. The videos for his singles have all been selected for film festival inclusion, around the globe. John is a January 2019 Billboard Magazine Emerging Artist and a Communitas Award Winner for his work with non-profit, Band Together Pittsburgh. It’s no surprise to those who know him, as he truly is a humble, loving, and grateful person, who treasures his family and friends. Certainly, that comes across, loud and clear, in his honest, from-the-heart songs; and that, undoubtedly, is another quality which endears him to his fans. Rather than a drawback, however, Vento considers such diversity to be among his strengths; and his fans agree. They relish sharing his tumultuous trek toward achieving his artistic vision, which he accomplishes by channeling a blend of eclectic influences through his own, raw emotions. Helping to engineer the roller coaster ride is a stout core of collaborators, including John Randall Fox, Buddy Hall, Tim Hadley, and Frank Ferraro, along with renowned playwright/lyricist, Amy Hartman. Many members of this crew have been with him for more than a decade; and it’s easy to understand why, as Vento consistently showers them with appreciation and accolades. Though a one-of-a-kind performer, he professes a great distaste for the word, “solo,” insisting that, “Without my collaborators, I would not have accomplished anything.” That’s no surprise to those who know him, as he truly is a humble, loving, and grateful person, who treasures his family and friends. Certainly, that comes across, loud and clear, in his honest, from-the-heart songs; and that, undoubtedly, is another quality which endears him to his fans. As he puts it, “If just one person is touched in some small way by one of my songs, that’s the greatest reward that I could receive.” Of course, it’s purely logical that Vento would find a great following in this town. His steely resistance to categorization is the very essence and backbone of Pittsburgh. Built by a veritable melting pot of blue-collar workers, the once-gritty city has risen from the slag heap, through the smoke and haze, to become a sparkling, spectacular hub of culture and learning. Yet, it remains true to its deeply-forged identity. John’s 2019 MTS release is “Love, Lust and Other Wreckage.” The album received the IMEA Award for Best Americana Album. Who are Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers? Music lovers the world over continue to learn about this band that’s earned a nationwide following and international fans with its honest, original music fused with synergy, sugar, sweat and soul. The 14-year-old four-piece combo plays an Americana that encompasses Texas honky-tonk, Bakersfield twang, Memphis rockabilly, Western swing and good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll. Ruby Dee’s is a tale of unbelievable resilience and drive in the face of struggles that would foil someone with less determination. Her latest album Little Black Heart is a tour de force of exemplary musicianship. Ruby wrote every song on it, with the exception of a Jack Scott chestnut that was a favorite of the band. This is amazing in itself, considering the aftermath of a terrible accident that left her with significant brain damage. Eight years ago, she was involved in a scooter accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury and other trauma: vertigo, memory loss, nausea, mental confusion and language challenges. “I could picture an image in my mind, but couldn’t think of the word. I couldn’t finish thoughts or sentences or conversations, let alone write songs.” Providing the rock-solid honky-tonk groove backing Ruby and Jorge are Rick Watson on doghouse bass and Michael Bahan on cathouse drums. Together, they have played fourteen successful European tours and a few rockin’ Australian tours, as well as a variety of dates across the United States. The band’s release Live From Austin Texas came out mid May 2011 on both CD and vinyl, showcasing a few new songs and fans old favorites cranked up with that live jumpin’ sound for which the Snakehandlers are so well known. Songs from the CD charted for three months on both the AMA and Texas Third Coast Music charts, and the CD earned the band a 54th Grammy consideration for Best Americana Album. Their release Rockabilly Playground came out May 2013 on both CD and vinyl, and is a roots and rockabilly album for the whole family. With all mature instrumentation (no kazoos or funny voices) and lyrics for the kids: songs about homework, naptime, why we have to follow all the rules, super best friends, and more. Ruby wrote the record when she saw how many of their fans have children and when they can bring them to shows, how many of those kids LOVE this style of music! So rather than sing achy breaky ‘he’s gonna get it’ type songs to them, she wrote new ones with the kiddos in mind. Songs from the album charted on both AMA and FAR charts, and earned the band a 56th Grammy consideration for Best Children’s Album. “Risky — and perhaps just a bit risqué — Ruby Dee and The Snakehandlers conjure forth all sorts of visions of another time,” said Metro Santa Cruz after a California show. “Rooted firmly in the classic country and rockabilly tradition, the band is an authentic backdrop for lead singer Ruby Dee’s blend of Wanda Jackson sass and Patsy Cline pathos. The band holds it down with the insistence of a chugging train while Dee, a pinup heartbreaker of yesteryear with thoroughly modern attitude, commands the stage.” Media Contact: Western Publicity Heather West, 773/301-5767; westernpublicity@gmail.com RUBY DEE AND THE SNAKEHANDLERS www.rubydeemusic.com www.reverbnation.com/rubydeeandthesnakehandlers www.facebook.com/rubydeeandthesnakehandlers

While it's commonplace for mentors and musical influences to get thanked in a Grammy-acceptance speech, Sadler Vaden made sure to pay homage to his father's physical record collection when, as lead guitarist for Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, the group took home this year's award for Best Americana Album. Since joining the group after the release of Isbell's 2013 breakthrough "Southeastern," Sadler has performed worldwide in one of the busiest and most critically-acclaimed bands working today, even playing side-by-side with some of the classic rock heroes that his dad first spun around the house. On top of his production techniques and overall approach as a solo artist, today Sadler discusses the band’s new live album, his delicate balance between improvisation and structure as a guitarist, and the urge to release non-album singles as quickly as they come. We even examine some vinyl gems and first pressings from his dad's collections on-air! Find Sadler Vaden's 2016 self-titled debut album, as well as Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit's "The Nashville Sound" and "Live from the Ryman," however you get music. He championed to bring the recording studio back to its origin, working hard to find, install and use the same period equipment that Sam Phillips engineered with in the 1950s. His 11 years of dedication to Sun and its signature sound garnered national attention when he was featured by Lester Holt for NBC’s Nightly News and the Today Show.
