Marielle Heller directed this adaptation of Rachel Yoder's novel about an artist struggling with the monotony of stay-at-home motherhood. As her frustrations worsen by day, she transforms into a canine at night. Released in time for the holidays, is NIGHTBITCH the feisty underdog of awards season, or is this feminist fable for the dogs? Delve into our discussion of NIGHTBITCH that goes into some off-leash diversions on Miranda July's All Fours, Whole Foods, The Fly, Bob Dylan, Queer, and much, much more! Writer/director/actor Courtney Davis returns to the podcast to help us judge Alan J. Pakula's 1990 legal thriller PRESUMED INNOCENT starring Harrison Ford, Raul Julia, Bonnie Bedelia, Brian Dennehy, Paul Winfield and Greta Scacchi. Based on the best-selling novel by Scott Turow, PRESUMED INNOCENT spins the engrossing tale of a respected prosecutor accused of murdering a colleague. To give away any more of the plot would be a crime in itself. A box office hit upon release, the story has resurfaced in a new adaptation on Apple TV+ starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. For a movie of highly enjoyable twists and turns (including a still-discussed ending), we highly recommend you see PRESUMED INNOCENT before listening to our spoiler-filled discussion, where we also launch into unrelated sidebars on Casino, Flags of Our Fathers, The Perils of Pauline, Donald Sutherland, Kinds of Kindness, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard's Architectural Digest profile, and much, much more! PRESUMED INNOCENT (1990) is available for digital rental and purchase on most major platforms.

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Feb 22nd Publish Date: Feb 21st Commercial: From the Drake Realty Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, February 22nd, and Happy heavenly Birthday to MLB HOF Sparky Anderson. ***02.22.24 – BIRTHDAY – SPARKY ANDERSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. A Couple indicted for disposing of baby's ashes Five People Displaced After Fire Breaks Out in Marietta Marietta Council Tightens New Restrictions on Downtown Housing Plus, Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food longevity. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: A Couple indicted for disposing of baby's ashes A couple from Dallas, Anilus and Rosnie Frederic, were indicted last week by a Cobb grand jury on serious charges relating to the alleged theft and disposal of a child's ashes. The incident reportedly took place at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital's linen sorting facility where both were employed. The Frederics are accused of stealing a small gold and black urn containing the cremated remains of a baby from Carla Watson on January 25, 2023. The urn was reportedly located inside a teddy bear belonging to Watson. The couple allegedly took the urn home and disposed of the remains in an unspecified manner1. Initially charged with theft by taking and abandonment of a dead body, the charges were upgraded to include malicious removal of a dead body from a grave, removal of a dead body from a grave, and abandonment of a dead body, all felonies. They were arrested in April, and each posted an $8,470 bond after spending a day in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. The indictment was handed down on Tuesday, February 13, in Cobb Superior Court, presided over by Judge Henry Thompson. STORY 2: Five People Displaced After Fire Breaks Out in Marietta A fire that erupted in a multifamily home in Marietta on Tuesday morning left five people displaced. The incident occurred on the 9000 block of Whittington Parkway off Austell Road around 10 a.m. Over a dozen fire crews from Cobb County were quick to respond, successfully containing the flames. The blaze was primarily limited to one unit, though two other units suffered smoke damage. Cobb Fire Chief of Staff, Michael Cunningham, commended the swift and efficient response of the fire crews. "Our crews did a fantastic job getting the fire isolated to one unit," he said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and thankfully, no injuries were reported1. As a reminder to the community, Cunningham emphasized the importance of checking smoke detectors regularly and closing doors before bedtime. STORY 3: Marietta Council Tightens New Restrictions on Downtown Housing Marietta City Council has recently implemented stricter controls on downtown residential development by modifying zoning regulations1. Under the new rules, developers must now gain specific approval from the council for construction of residential buildings in the downtown area. This significant shift follows a series of heated debates, including a freeze on apartment construction and disputes over architectural designs. Prior to this change, residential construction was generally permitted in the central business district. However, the new regulations necessitate explicit council approval1. In addition to this, the amendment revises the definition of building height, retaining height restrictions but allowing certain exceptions for structures such as church spires. These modifications are intended to address concerns about preserving the historical and aesthetic integrity of downtown Marietta. This comes in the wake of previous legal disputes and disagreements over development projects1. As always, stay tuned for more local news and updates. Break: HENRY COUNTY SHERRIF STORY 4: North Cobb Christian Triumphantly Advances to Round 2 The North Cobb Christian Eagles soared to victory in the first round of the Class AA state tournament, defeating North Murray with a solid 77-56 score. The team's strong start set the pace, leading them to host either Providence Christian or Columbia in round two. Guard Gabe Bolden was a standout, netting 14 of his 19 points in the first quarter. As a collective, the team demonstrated exceptional offensive prowess, contributing to their success. North Murray's Isaiah Morrison led his team with 16 points and seven rebounds. Stay local, stay informed, and watch for updates on the Eagles' tournament journey. STORY 5: Fannin County too much for NCC The Fannin County girls' basketball team delivered a commanding performance against North Cobb Christian, securing a 65-37 victory in the first round of the Class AA state playoffs. The game, which took place in Kennesaw, saw Fannin County take an early lead, scoring the first five points and maintaining their advantage throughout the match. This win propels the Rebels into the second round of the playoffs, where they will face off against the winner of the Providence Christian and Columbia match. North Cobb Christian, despite having won 13 out of their last 14 games, experienced their second consecutive loss, bringing their season to a close. Despite the loss, North Cobb Christian coach Ray Gutierrez expressed pride in his team's accomplishments and optimism for future improvement. North Cobb Christian relied heavily on Addie Johnson, who led the team with 18 points, while Ava Garner contributed with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fannin County, on the other hand, was propelled by Courtney Davis, who scored 22 points, including five 3-pointers. Davis played a significant role in establishing the Rebels' early lead, scoring 11 of her points in the first quarter. We'll be back in a moment. Shivam catches up with an old friend after 25 years. Courtney is acclaimed as the best known contemporary Celtic art designer in the world, His work has been exhibited far and wide in Europe, the US, Japan and Australia. Born of Welsh, Irish and Scottish descent in 1946 in Blackwood, South Wales, Courtney Davis has built a worldwide reputation as the artist who has re-awakened the exquisite artwork of the ancient Celtic masters in a contemporary style that is uniquely his own. For over 30 years, designs of his art have been applied to mediums such as cards, posters, fabrics, glass, jewellery, carpets and even in the form of body art. Many of his original pieces can be located in private and institutional collections, in chapels and museums. Entirely self-taught, Courtney's career began in the late 1960's as an engraver and designer in one of the UK's largest jewellery manufacturers, where his designs became popular and in high demand. His life was to change dramatically in 1974 when he had major spinal surgery and during his hospital stay he experienced a series of mystical visions. Those experiences, along with a deep feeling of personal loss following the death of his father soon afterwards, led him to begin an ever developing spiritual journey. He did not return to engraving and instead began to draw, adding Celtic inspired borders to his pictures. Soon, as his art become popular he created a range of cards and prints that became ever more in demand. Then, in 1984 he caught the imagination and spirit of the time when his work Merlin the Immortal was first published, igniting once again an interest in Arthurian legend. Inspired, he began to create a series of black and white prints which would go on to become the book that he is most associated with, Merlin Awakens. As he gained increasing recognition, Courtney went on to illustrate over 50 published books, such as Celtic Borders and Decoration, The Art of Celtia, The Celtic Tarot, St Patrick – A Visual Celebration and The Celtic Source Book that have become iconic Celtic Art classics. Summer visits to her parents homeland led Julia Wijesinghe, now 23, to a deep appreciation of Sri Lanka, a small island nation in South Asia. One of the great things about Black Cannabiz Expo & Conference is that so many of the people you may follow are standing there right in front of you. I found myself many times over the span of 3-days being met face-to-face with someone I've admired from afar but never had a chance to meet. One of those people was Courtney Davis. Davis serves as the executive director of the cannabis advocacy group Marijuana Matters. She was in town to host a fireside chat. It wouldn't be long after that she would sit down with CashColorCannabis to talk about her life in politics, working with Marijuana Matters, the need for conferences like this, and more.
Writer/director/actor Courtney Davis joins to discuss the 1991 comedy-fantasy DEFENDING YOUR LIFE starring Albert Brooks, Meryl Streep, Rip Torn, and Lee Grant. This was Brooks' fourth feature film as writer and director and his most ambitious comedy yet, depicting the afterlife as an efficient and religiously-unaffiliated destination called Judgment City, where highly intelligent bureaucrats prosecute, defend, and ultimately judge the lives of the recently dead. DEFENDING YOUR LIFE was a box office disappointment upon release, but has since grown in reputation as a singularly inventive and thought-provoking comedy of the '90s. In this episode, we render the definitive judgment on Brooks' pleasant purgatory, but not before some diversions into Universal Studios, The Fast and the Furious, Texas geography, Norman Mailer's Maidstone, Sizzler, remote education, social media woes, Don't Worry Darling, facing our fears, and much much more!
Courtney Davis Curtis is the Assistant Vice President of Risk Management and Resilience Planning at the University of Chicago. She was also named RIMS Risk Manager of the Year 2022, 2020 Business Insurance Women to Watch, 2017 Business Insurance Break Out, and received the 2015 Risk & Insurance Power Broker award. In this episode, Courtney shares her journey as an insurance professional, what a risk manager has to think about when there's a university under their care, and her next steps as a seasoned insurance and risk professional. Key Takeaways: A little bit about Courtney and her role at the University of Chicago. When COVID-19 first hit, what was Courtney's approach to keeping her students safe? How did Courtney find herself in insurance? Higher education institutions can end up being the highest employer in a city. If you think about it, they're like mini-cities in themselves. Protesting can be part of a university's culture. How does a risk manager think about protests in terms of risks? When it comes to risk managers, the answer is often “no” when you want to do something new. However, it's important to work with partners to get to a “yes.” Everything we do has an inherent risk to it. Why is Courtney so passionate about the insurance industry? Has Courtney ever thought about going back to being a broker? Courtney recommends really diving deep into a topic and getting your hands dirty so that you can shorten the gap and become an expert in that field quicker. How important are CPCU certifications and what has Courtney's experience been like so far with it? Is the insurance industry still a male-dominated field? Mentorship and support are critical pieces of getting more diversity into the insurance space. What do younger generations need to be mindful of? Courtney won the risk manager of the year award. What was that like? What's next for Courtney? What gets her the most excited? Over the past two years, social equity programs have become noticeably commonplace in all sectors of the cannabis industry. While committing time, capital and resources to addressing the lasting consequences of the War on Drugs is a necessary first step, the onus is now on industry stakeholders to tangibly deliver on their promises. In this episode, we speak to Marijuana Matters Executive Director Courtney Davis about the importance of developing social equity programs around lived experiences and the entire industry ecosystem. Courtney also examines what measures companies can take to set attainable goals and deliver social equity outcomes.
Courtney Davis joins us to discuss her meaningful work.
In this episode of Cannabis Unlocked, Courtney Davis (Executive Director of Marijuana Matters) and KEY Founding Partner Jordan Youkilis discuss social equity legislation in the cannabis industry. The two discuss Courtney's career background and how she got involved in cannabis social equity. From there, we discuss the history of the War on Drugs (which Courtney explains was truly a War on People) and the collateral consequences of that failed policy - particularly for communities of color. From there, we discuss the various legislative reforms passed at state and local levels, and why these social equity reforms have unfortunately lagged behind laws focused on developing the business of cannabis. We then discuss the specific initiatives Courtney and the Marijuana Matters team are employing to rectify these injustices, and how individuals and/or businesses can support these initiatives. Please enjoy!

Courtney Davis is committed to loving her students well. In her role as Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Azusa Pacific University, Courtney helps her students realize the importance between communication and its impact on their own work and participation in the world. In this episode of the CFWLA Podcast, Courtney chronicles her inspiration for work in the higher-education space, speaks on the piety that accompanies a robust theology of work, and unpacks the challenges educators face in this cultural moment. COURTNEY BIO Courtney Wong Davis, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of communication studies at Azusa Pacific University, where she teaches organizational, small group, and professional communication. Her research interests include organizational socialization and assimilation, specifically focused on organizational entry and exit, in addition to intergenerational communication and organizational identification. Her scholarship has been published in the Western Journal of Communication, Communication Quarterly, and The Handbook of Intergroup Communication. Having fully enjoyed her collegiate experience at the University of Southern California and doctoral work at UC Santa Barbara, Davis is passionate about teaching and mentoring both in and outside the classroom, equipping undergraduate students for their post-collegiate endeavors, and encouraging personal and professional growth in her students. On Discerning Career Callings: (14:50-15:22) “If God is sovereign, then he'll have complete understanding and providence over all these pieces move. But (he) also ordains every single one of our days, the very mundane and ordinary ones, and the very mundane and ordinary conversations and layer the mundane and ordinary to some really extraordinary things, both vocationally and otherwise and the opportunities to do what we get to do. We just forget sometimes.” On Embracing and Implementing a Theology of Work: (25:09-25:58) “As those of us who get to teach and work in this space about a theology of work we've got opportunities to encourage those who might not be affirmed by the world and that is a way in which we get to articulate our set-apartness. To speak to the receptionist, because they are actually the great gatekeepers of organizations, they have so much more power than the fact that they don't even appear on organizational charts. There are just so many people that you get to see and inherently value by seeing them that is more distinctive because of a more robust theology of work. On Pushing Back Against Darkness in Education: (38:41-39:24) “There is a lot of work to be done there, to say, ‘You guys, if your grades are the most important thing you're getting out of this class, you've missed it and I've failed you.' There is a real working-against-the-culture of the education system to say it's not just about checking boxes, but you get to decide what you are taking with you. It turns out that your college diploma will get you five bucks and a cup of coffee. But education is what you can actually articulate and live out once you leave the university space.”
Courtney is brilliantly vulnerable and open throughout this interview. She discusses being bullied, clinical depression, divorce, unplanned pregnancies, and career difficulties. This is a story of how resilience, faith and self care help you recover and set one on a course toward fulfillment and happiness. Be inspired and enjoy this episode!
