Grab your sandals and sword and get philosophical with Jason, Tony, and our guest Paul Klein, as we unpack the wonders of Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus (1960). The film was adapted from Howard Fast's novel of the same title by Dalton Trumbo, and it is considered a major step in the end of the notorious Hollywood blacklist. The film is also read as an allegory for civil rights stuggles, the HUAC hearings, and "Third World" struggles. All of this and more is discussed in the episode.  Books and articles mentioned: Who Paid the Piper: The CIA and the Cultural Cold War by Frances Stonor Saunders The Final Victim of the Blacklist: John Howard Lawson, Dean of the Hollywood Ten by Gerald Horne Aesthetic Theory by Theodor Adorno “Fascinating Fascism” by Susan Sontag As always, please suscribe to the podcast, and don't forget to leave a review! And follow Jason on Twitter (X) at @JasonAChristian, Anthony at @tonyjballas, and Paul at @ptklein, and the same handles at BlueSky. EPISODE 107 | Traces of Reality: Abstract Art and the CIA (World Is Weird 13) Guest: Mandy Theis, founder and director of the School of Atelier Arts, academic director and professor at the Florence Academy of Art Maybe you've walked into a museum or gallery and seen a big white, blank canvas, or a huge circle, and thought, "So, this is art, eh?". But why is there so much of this abstract stuff around? The answer might be surprising - because the CIA promoted it as part of the Cold War. And then it rather got away from them. Today, the art market is the most unregulated in the world, and aesthetics and skill take a back seat to branding.  Like what we do? Does the ability to produce great art depend upon living in a free country? For a time the rhetoric emanating from the United States—including from President John F. Kennedy himself—suggested it did. Classical music expert Joseph Horowitz delves into the sources of this Cold War-era hyperbole in his new book, The Propaganda of Freedom: JFK, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and the Cultural Cold War (https://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/?id=c045271). He joins host Richard Aldous to discuss Soviet-era cultural achievements, cultural diplomacy, and more.

Congress For Cultural Freedom Code Name-QKopera Frances Stonor Saunders https://youtu.be/FYLoyyR1qtI Spawned out of group humanist, & Fabian John Dewey formed In 1939 called the "American Committee for Cultural Freedom” which continued on even after the Congress For Cultural Freedom was formed. Founded: 26 June 1950 Dissolved: 1979 (as International Association for Cultural Freedom) The CIA wanted to influence other parts of the world in order to combat the growing sentiment towards Communism, focusing especially on artists, play-writes, musicians as well as intellectuals. Both of whom they knew would go on to influence many others. Many members were former Communist Party members. Trotskyites specifically who'd turned against Stalin, & his totalitarian measures. Most were not pro-American by any means. They were generally Democratic Socialist types. Like modern Libs, they believed America was backwards, & lacked culture. Quite a few top members were of Eastern European Jewish descent. Obviously, they had no intentions of spreading traditional American rugged individualistic, or patriotic ideology. They were all about "dumbocracy" aka, the Liberal World Order. Ben Norton was invited to give this talk about the fake left and imperialism. He discusses how the CIA's "woke" recruitment ad is not new; it is rooted in an "intersectional imperialist" history going back to the first cold war, in which the CIA poured money into cultivating anti-communist, pro-imperialist progressive groups, using fronts like the Congress for Cultural Freedom and billionaire-funded foundations like Ford and Rockefeller. Ben goes through the book "The Cultural Cold War," and talks about supposed "leftist" CIA assets like feminist leader Gloria Steinem and Trotskyite civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, then analyzes examples of astroturfed, Nonprofit Industrial Complex-backed pseudo-left campaigns in the US, Western Europe, and Latin America. The United States is a pop cultural superpower. One can debate if this is for good or for worse – but what is almost indisputable is the amount of resources government institutions ranging from universities to the military and intelligence services place on steering the direction of cultural icons such as musicians and movie stars. Today Jay Dyer, known for his incisive analysis on propaganda embedded in American films and music, joins us for a discussion on the so called counter-cultural revolution in the 1960s music scene centered around Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles. What appears to be an organic, anti-establishment movement led by artists such as Jim Morrison of The Doors is, upon closer examination, co-opted and steered by the very organizations that they publicly condemn. In America, controlled opposition would appear to take many forms.— Brought to you by —Very special guest Jay Dyer @Jay_D007Jay’s Site: https://jaysanalysis.comJay’s Book: https://jaysanalysis.com/jays-book/Jay’s Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/JayDyerJay’s YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/jaydyerJay’s TV Show: https://www.gaia.com/series/hollywood…— References —– The Witch-Cult in Western Europe, Murray (1921)– Tragedy and Hope, Quigley (1966)– Libido Dominandi, Jones (2005)– Agent 666, Spence (2008)– Dark Shadows, Burton (2012)– Cultural Cold War, Saunders (2013)– Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon, McGowan (2014)– Drugs as Weapons Against Us, Potash (2015)Member Login HereSubscribe to get more: Only $4.95/mo full talks & audio interviewsOr subscribe yearly: $60.00 for full talks and audio interviewspatreon-become-my-patronfollow_twitterFollow_us_on_Facebookyoutube-subscribe-button-psd-photoshop-july-2013To support my work, become a member at JaysAnalysis for 4.95 a month, or 60.00 a year, for my full talks and interviews, as well as purchasing signed copies of my book, Esoteric Hollywood: Sex, Cults & Symbols in Film.
