The topic of "What SEO success looks like in 2025" is a fascinating one, especially in the context of evolving search engine technologies and user behaviors. In the TechSEO Podcast episode where Dan Shure joins host Dan Taylor, several themes are likely discussed based on current trends in SEO.

Voices of Search // A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Content Marketing Podcast

Dan Shure, Podcast Host at Experts on the Wire and SEO Consultant at Evolving SEO, talks about 80/20 growth for SEO. When browsing through sites like Semrush, you'll see stories of companies growing their web traffic to 50,000 visits. Oftentimes, the majority of this traffic is coming from a small number of pages as a result of the implementation of the 80/20 growth principle. Today, Dan discusses the 80/20 growth rule for SEO. Voices of Search // A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) & Content Marketing Podcast

Dan Shure, Podcast Host at Experts on the Wire and SEO Consultant at Evolving SEO, talks about why he ignores E-A-T. Despite the emphasis placed by some SEO professionals on optimizing for E-A-T signals, it is still possible for websites to rank without them. This raises questions about the actual significance of E-A-T as a ranking factor. Today, Dan discusses why you should ignore E-A-T. Our final podcast of 2022 doesn't fail to deliver as we tackle content optimization with an analogy: treating it like you would if you were a comedian! Dan Shure, the host of Experts on the Wire podcast, joins Erin again in the second segment of his interview in 2022. Dan has some great examples of success that he has seen for the consumer intent focus before anything else. The connection between music theory and digital marketing is also explored, focusing on two main concepts:  Understanding the Large and Small concepts of content integration  and the perspective of Patterns. SEO is often presented as a huge checklist of things that need to be done before you can even consider hitting publish. Miss a step and your content will be dead on arrival. But the truth is some of those things can make a big impact on how content ranks, but some of it is just noise. Dan Shure, founder of Evolving SEO and host of Experts on the Wire, said good SEO comes down to paying equal attention to both the big picture of content—the structure and purpose—and the small details that make a difference. Getting too bogged down by one or the other will lead to content that flops. In this episode, Dan explains how he handles that balance and tunes out the rest. SEO is a deep and nuanced discipline. This is evidence in no small part by the fact that the book I co-authored, The Art of SEO, is nearly a thousand pages. And the complexity is only increasing as Artificial Intelligence plays a bigger and bigger role in Google's ranking algorithm. But don't let that deter you from working to optimize your website, because there's undoubtedly a lot of low hanging fruit there, even if you've done a lot of SEO work already.  Today, I have Dan Shure joining us. Dan is an SEO consultant who's worked with Sumo and WGBH in Boston, and he's the host of the Experts on the Wire Podcast. It's always fun to geek out with someone who's also passionate about SEO. In this episode, we'll be covering everything from understanding the psychology of searchers, to entities versus keywords, to biases, and Google's machine learning algorithms, and so much more. Stay tuned as Dan and I share some of the most valuable SEO strategies for this new decade.

Google announced that in the coming weeks broad match modifier and phrase match keywords will also begin matching to words within the search query that share the same meaning as the keyword. The SEM/PPC community is not surprised but still very frustrated by this news. It is Google Ads (formerly AdWords) expanding the keywords you want to match on for your ads to even more types of keyword phrases. That ultimately can lead to your ad showing more often but also it can lead to your ad showing for queries that you do not want your ads to show for. This has been the trend Google Ads has been going with since 2014 and has been a huge frustration point for the SEM industry. Google has published official guidance on Core Updates that goes beyond anything published before. The guidance covers four areas of content and recommends becoming acquainted with Google's Quality Raters Guidelines to learn how to judge your own content. The guidance additionally mentioned that updates could affect Google Discover.

Dan Shure posted on his podcast his audio notes from after a private dinner with Gary Illyes of Google from April 4th 2017. Basically, they had a dinner with several SEOs, after the dinner when Dan got into his car, he took audio notes of what he remembered from that dinner. Today's Commexis Cast discusses an anecdotal report of YouTube's increase ad serving on longer videos, as well as creators tweaking their content length to better match YouTube's algorithm. For more, visit our blog: https://goo.gl/FUpTjx -------------------------------------------- Sources: Tim Peterson on Digiday: https://digiday.com/media/creators-making-longer-videos-cater-youtube-algorithm/ Amy Gesenhues on Marketing Land: https://marketingland.com/is-youtube-serving-up-more-pre-roll-mid-roll-video-ads-243505 -------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media for more! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Commexis1/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/commexis1 Twitter: https://twitter.com/Commexis -------------------------------------------- Amy Gesenhues on Marketing Land reported that Dan Shure, SEO consultant and podcast host, found that 6 ads were being served on a 17 minute long YouTube video. The ads consisted of two skippabled pre-roll, two mid-roll ads a third of the way through the video, and two mid-roll ads two-thirds of the way through the video on the Maschine Master's channel. You can find a link to a video showcasing the increase in in ads here. When Marketing Land reached out to YouTube for comment, they received the following response: "Our goal is to ensure ads are useful and relevant to users. The amount of ads that a user sees will vary based on a number of factors including ad preferences and the dynamics of auction and advertiser demand." The increase in video ads isn't just being noticed by SEO experts, either. YouTube creators have been modifying their content to best react to YouTube's algorithm shifts. Tim Peterson on Digiday spoke with many popular YouTube creators who say they've been lengthening their videos for that exact reason. Not only does the algorithm prefer longer videos, as retention rates tend to be better with that content, but there's an increased likelihood of having ads placed on that video. Furthermore, users may be less inclined to bounce away from an ad halfway through a 12 minute video, while the same ad halfway through a six minute video would fair worse. That said, Phillip and I discussed our displeasure with having six ads on one YouTube video. Phillip noted that he'd likely abandon the video if presented with that many ads. While I'm not so sure I would, as four mid-rolls ads reminds me a lot of traditional TV, I can't image investing that much into a video and then abandoning it. Perhaps that's just because I don't tend to watch traditional TV anymore (hello Twitch and Youtube) and therefore my alternatives would just be other videos. Today's cast: Phillip Brooks (Commexis Lead Strategist) and Matthew McGrorty (Commexis Videographer/Podcaster). Join the Commexis team as we add context to these stories for the busy CMO. Dan and his wife Sarah run Evolving SEO together in Worcester, Massachusetts and he's also an associate at Moz. We had a great conversation with Dan about SEO which focused on how to find gaps in content, which he called "Opportunity Gaps." Plus, we discuss how branding/advertising and SEO can intersect and can you make improvements to your homepage's meta description? You bet you can! Listen to Dan talk about how Macy's fails at this but gives several examples of who has great meta descriptions! We also spend some time in the show discussing podcasting with Dan and talk about lessons we both have learned from doing our podcasts. Strangely enough, we also find out that the initials of both of our podcasts are "E-O-T-W." Weird... It was a fun conversation and we hope to have Dan on again in the near future! Thank you for listening to episode 27 of Branch out with Evin Charles Anderson. The past few weeks have been filled with some amazing guests, so Tatiana and I wanted to create a special for you all. We have taken the words of wisdom segment from each of our recent interviews and have compiled them all together for you. We have Dave Gerhardt of Drift and Tech In Boston, Kaite Rosa of VentureFizz, Dan Shure of Evolving SEO and Moz and finally Shawn LaVana Marketing Professional and writer for VentureFizz. Dave: I think the biggest thing to remember is that at the end of the day that is no marketing cure for sucking. What that means is that customer experience really is the new marketing. So if you have a product or service that people don’t genuinely love, no marketing tactic or campaign with save you from that. I would start with having an awesome product and an amazing team and then worry about the marketing tactics. Kaite: I am partnered with a high school student. When she was starting to enter her junior year and was thinking about a possible career path, she thought she knew where she wanted to go. I really encouraged her to have real meaningful conversations with people doing what she wanted to do. She thought she really wanted to become a personal trainer. We sat down and talked to someone who was a personal trainer. And we also sat down and talked with someone who was a nutrition professor. Her perception was completely flipped. So I think it is really important to sit down and have conversations with a broad scope of people in the industry you want to be in. It is also important to take a variety of opportunities to help expose you to different areas that you could go in. Dan: A lot of people want to jump into social or get into blogging but you have to set up the core product and services on your website. You need a strong foundation from the very beginning. So the mistake a lot of people make is they hire a web designer, they get a developer, they build the website, they launch it and then 3 months later they call me ask if I can put the SEO into the website. That really isn’t how it works. The best SEO is done from the beginning. The SEO is one of the first people involved doing keyword research, helping to determine the architecture of the website (what the pages are, the URLs, the hierarchy, the menus, the navigation). And especially when you are dealing with e-commerce. You want to look at that aspect of SEO from the very beginning. From beyond that, now you need great content. I am not saying blog articles; I’m talking about your core product and service content. Not only should that be optimized for search but also is it at least good for users. Does it help show what your product and services are. An episode (Experts On The Wire) people can listen to is Amy Harrison, who talks about copyrighting and about great things like umbrella terms, contrast and putting humor in your copy. Or you can look at UnBounce or ConverstionXL that talk about great copyrighting and CRO. Shawn: To crib on Ben Horowitz’ product market fit being everything…I was in an early stage company, PostWire, where my main task was – they were getting signals from 5 different areas that their product could be applicable to. I think that is one of the first things you need to do as an evolving company. Figure out where your product best fits, who it is solves problems for and what messages work for that. I think one of the other key things that comes up is the focus on the user experience. It used to be an afterthought but now people are hiring UI/UX people. Once you find your product market traction, sort that out as well. If you are making a product, make it a great interface. If it isn’t a product, make every engagement with a prospect or client delightful. Seek ways to make their lives better. More information about us: http://www.WaverleyKnobs.com/about
