“I believe that every great brand should evolve its look and feel about every five years,” said Katherine Power, serial entrepreneur and the founder of Versed skin care. “Since our launch in 2019, we've seen that our core customer, who is primarily an older millennial or young Gen X — I call them Xennials — has really grown along with us, and we wanted to continue to grow with them and to create something fresh and modern.” This included a refresh of packaging, visuals and language overseen by Lola Gonzalez Marra, Versed's longtime creative lead. Power and Marra have worked together for more than a decade on Power's many entrepreneurial projects, including editorial sites WhoWhatWear and Byrdie — which Power launched with Hillary Kerr in 2006 and 2013, respectively — as well as color cosmetics line Merit, which Power founded in 2021. “We decided we needed to evolve enough that it's a change, but not so much that you go on Versed one day and it's a completely different brand,” said Marra. As Power and Marra explained on this episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, the refresh has been in the works for over a year. Versed was launched in 2019 from data and insights learned at Byrdie and WhoWhatWear, which Power and Kerr have since sold to publisher Dotdash in 2019 and publisher Future Brands in 2022, respectively. Thanks to Versed's omnichannel strategy where 75% of its sales are through Target, switching over merchandise has required a unique strategy. Hint: Versed is selling off older products DTC for 30% off right now. The team also rolled out tweaks to its social media aesthetic and naming formula for products. The brand also used this as an opportunity to fine-tune the assortment by making product cuts. But perhaps the biggest change is in its packaging colors, which Marra desaturated and leveraged into category IDs, all of which the duo discusses in the podcast episode.

Dotdash Meredith's Lindsay Van Kirk says the cookie-based buying tools she helped develop in her early career at AppNexus placed too much value on unreliable third-party audiences. But contextual tools like DDM's D/Cipher, which she now oversees, can build a better ad ecosystem for buyers and sellers.
School is back in session in many parts of the world, which is the time when struggles often begin to surface. On episode 241, Emily Kircher-Morris talks with Amanda Morin about the complexities of advocating for neurodivergent children, including utilizing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and the services they require. They explore the qualification process for IEPs, the importance of understanding behavior as communication, and the distinction between medical and educational diagnoses. The conversation emphasizes the need for advocacy, and the importance of tailored support for each child's unique needs. Takeaways IEPs provide specialized services and instruction for struggling students. Qualification for an IEP involves a comprehensive evaluation process. Twice exceptional children may have giftedness that masks their disabilities. Behavior can be a form of communication for children. Medical diagnoses do not equate to educational diagnoses. Labels do not define a child's abilities or potential. Accommodations can be provided in advanced placement classes. Advocacy is crucial for ensuring children receive appropriate services. Understanding the difference between IEPs and 504 plans is essential. Support services can vary widely and should be tailored to individual needs. Register here for our free annual fall event we've created specifically for educators who are passionate about creating neurodiversity-affirming learning environments for students. The event will be held on Monday, September 23, and you can sign up to join Emily and a live panel of experts, who will be discussing ways to best support students of all neurotypes. Amanda Morin has most recently served as the Vice President of Learning & Knowledge for The Jed Foundation (JED). She headed teams of committed researchers, subject matter experts, and learning and development professionals in efforts to build knowledge about mental health, neurodiversity, and disability, to ensure all the work she's engaged in is evidence-based, and includes the most up-to-date thinking in the field. She's a certified teacher who provides unique expertise, and innovative perspectives to mission-driven education and family-facing organizations and coalitions. She works in print and digital media as a writer, editor, and content creator, empowering parents and educators to affirm the pivotal roles they play in education. In a spotlight episode of The Rebooting Show, I spoke with Affinity Global CEO Lavin Punjabi for his view of how publishers adapt their affiliate operations. Affinity operates NucleusLinks, an affiliate operations platform that serves as something akin to Google Ad Manager for affiliate operations. Some takeaways:Many publishers are playing catch up. Affiliate marketing is one of the oldest internet business models, with its growth turbocharged by the ease and rise of e-commerce. Many legacy publishers were behind in adopting affiliate models, seeing performance ads as scraping the bottom of the barrel compared to impression models. “The biggest publishers in the world are scrambling to compete in this area that they kind of ignored for a generation,” Lavin said.Affiliate stresses silos. The entire idea of affiliate runs contrary to the notion of church and state. At one of The Rebooting's dinners focused on commerce, I heard a large publisher lament how the editorial team would battle to control personal finance reviews rather than the commerce team. They were basically working against each other internally. "Some publishers it's the main thing, but for a lot of marquee publishers, it's a department, and they have to figure out where it fits because it's not really editorial, but it's not really sales."Dotdash Meredith is an anomaly. Dotdash Meredith is the manifestation of these worlds colliding, with the internet-native Dotdash taking over the legacy Time Inc publications. It's telling that as publishers sound the alarm over AI, DDDM has weathered this storm and returned to growth. "They came from a commerce first angle, which is operated with CPS for a large degree. And then eventually with Meredith, which was CPM, they tried to find middle ground."
At last week's Media Product Forum, which The Rebooting held in collaboration with WordPress VIP, I had a discussion with Dotdash Meredith chief product officer Adam McClean and The Daily Beast svp of product Samantha Winkelman about their respective product strategies. While both owned by IAC, the publishers are at vastly different sizes, with The Daily Beast having three people in product to DDM's 75. The connective tissue of both: A focus on audience needs.

At Dotdash Meredith, CEO Neil Vogel remembers sitting around with his management team, after $2 million in “incremental” ad revenue appeared, and wondering, “Have we hit peak Dotdash?” “We had a really great formula: make incredible content, make really great sites and experiences, and have fewer ads that work better,” Neil said. Which brings me back to late 2021, because that's when IAC plunked down $2.7 billion to buy the storied Meredith brands: People, Entertainment Weekly, Better Homes & Gardens, InStyle. It was something of a minnow swallowing the whale, and indicative of the prevailing winds of publishing that were moving against glossy brands and toward performance workhorses. “We had this incredible ability to serve users and to make advertisers happy because we had lots of intent,” Neil said. “What we were lacking was brands.” Of course, soon after the deal took place, Jerome Powell decided he'd seen enough with the normalization of $7 coffee and started hiking interest rates. The repricing of markets isn't fun. And the now re-re-re-rechristened Dotdash Meredith has been no different. As it has integrated the Meredith properties, it has also dealt with a soft ad market it can do little to mitigate. You are not going to sell as many mortgages when interest rates are high. In the first quarter, Dotdash Meredith revenue declined 23% year over year, including 15% in digital advertising. “We bought at the frothiest point in the market,” Neil allowed. “The market is going to go up, the market is going to go down. If you look out at a long time horizon, it doesn't matter.” Neil and I discussed the deal (“I would do it again in a heartbeat”), the demise of the third-party cookie (“We don't need cookies to deliver scale and performance”), and WTF AI (the whole market is going to change).

Sup up your beer and collect your, um, elk bagels (???) and meet us down at The Eatin' Rifles, as we gab about one of the greatest artists of the O3L era, Paul Weller with the marvelous Terry Banks from Dot Dash! Terry followed The Jam's career in real time and counts them among his biggest influences. Brett is a Weller uber-fan, and Uncle Gregg is a casual fan who is diving deep into the Weller-hole. Whether it be with The Jam, The Style Council, or his long, prolific solo career, Paul Weller is an icon who has maintained a restlessly creative and unfathomably successful career for 45 years, racking up a staggering 65 Top 40 singles in the UK, including 21 Top 10's, and 38 Top 10 albums, including his two most recent studio albums landing at #1. His career serves almost as a microcosm of pop culture - from Class of ‘77 punk rock to being the driving figure behind the ‘79 mod revival to the evolution and sophistication of British pop in the ‘80s by incorporating elements of soul, jazz, synth pop, rap and acid house to a solo career that found him sharing the charts with the Britpop artists he influenced, eventually settling into his current role as a rock n' roll survivor who staunchly refuses to become a legacy act. In a recording career spanning more than 30 years, Terry Banks has played as/with St. Christopher, Tree Fort Angst, Glo-Worm, The Saturday People, Julie Ocean, and has released six albums to date with Dot Dash. We play a few cuts from Terry's past, plus a glimpse into the future, with a rough mix of a brand new track called "Space Junk, Satellites." Dot Dash's releases can be found on previous O3L guest Wally Salem's wonderful label The Beautiful Music...and thanks to Wally for making the introduction! #musicpodcast #musicpodcasts #podnation #thejam #paulweller #weller #stylecouncil #punkrock #sophistipop #heavysoul #70smusic #80smusic #90smusic #newwave #1stwave #classicalternative
Neil Vogel's mantra: Best content, fastest sites, fewest ads
Everyone loves a comeback, but few companies get them in the consumer internet business. ( Most companies have peaked and then set course on inevitable decline, with new owners either milking the asset on the way down or floundering unsuccessfully to reinvigorate the asset. That's why it's noteworthy what IAC has done with Internet 1.0 stalwart About.com. It was a company long past its peak in the first phase of digital publishing, having begun all the way back in 1994 as a place to find “expert” answers. Some takeaways from our conversation: Having a good user experience doesn't have to come at the expense of the business. Media is hard. I always mention how difficult it is to satisfy different constituencies: audience, advertisers, algorithms. Dotdash has proven that you can have fewer ads, faster sites and better content and still make more money. Print still has an important role. Everyone likes to call things dead, and print isn't going to be the driver of many media businesses going forward. But it still plays a role. I think it's a good sign that someone like Neil is bullish on print, run efficiently, doing the job of being a statement of the brand. Driving transactions is critical, but maybe not building products. There's lots of talk of commerce media here in Cannes. Publishers have seen their commerce businesses as bright spots. Dotdash has a large chunk of their business in driving transactions. Still, Neil strikes a note of caution when discussing turning that into actually making products versus passing on customer to product companies. These are often different businesses.
The Interview Discusses: How Dotdash in a relatively short period of time became the largest publisher in the United States.IAC's recent acquisition of Meredith and why he believes they now have the scale to effectively compete against Facebook and GoogleLessons learned from working with media mogul Barry Diller. The future of print magazines and why Dotdash is intentionally shrinking their subscriber base. The tremendous licensing opportunities they intend to take advantage of.A potential spinout of Dotdash from parent company IAC.Biography:Neil Vogel is the CEO of Dotdash Meredith, the largest digital and print publisher in America. Prior to its acquisition of Meredith in December 2021, Mr. Vogel was the CEO of Dotdash, where he led the company's transformation from a general information website (then About.com) to a vibrant collection of branded properties and one of the largest and fastest-growing online publishers. Before joining Dotdash, Mr. Vogel was the Founder and CEO of Recognition Media, a creator and producer of award shows and media properties for digital, creative, and advertising communities including the Webby Awards and the Telly Awards. Prior to starting Recognition Media, Mr. Vogel was Chief Corporate Development Officer at Alloy Media + Marketing, a digital content and marketing services company focused on the teen and youth market. Mr. Vogel is a member of the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the largest newspaper in America operated as a public-benefit corporation and serves as a venture partner at FirstMark Capital. He received a BS in Finance from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
My guest on the show today is Joey Levin, CEO if IAC/Interactivecorp. IAC is a $12.4 billion market cap holding company that has a long history of investing in disruptive digital businesses, helping them grow, and then spinning them off to shareholders. In fact, the company's Chairman, Barry Diller, has been influential in the success of a number of well-known public companies, including Expedia, TripAdvisor and LiveNation. In more recent times, the company has separated from Match Group and spun off Vimeo. Joey Levin has been CEO since 2015 and is tasked with creating value with the remaining group of businesses that IAC either controls or has minority stakes in. With that as the backdrop, I was excited to talk to Joey about: Spinning off Match, which now has a $35 billion market cap, during the tumultuous summer of 2020; What needs to go right with ANGI for the stock to be a good investment from here; The investment process and how IAC decides which opportunities to pursue; The merit of the DotDash acquisition of Meredith; How Joey decides on which companies to spend his time This episode of Compounders: The Anatomy of a Multibagger is sponsored by Tegus, an innovative and disruptive company that is changing the way professional investors work. "First name 'Dot' second name 'Dash'. Joe (DotDash) is new resident of the Ibizia stardust family. He has the skillset and determination to convey good music and seamless sounding mixes. From a young age, electronic dance and house music has always been in DotDash's ear. Participating in deep raves by Loop, Warehouse project, Mint and festivals up north, has moulded his music taste to be rather unique. Starting off playing in local York underground club-style Mansion as a support act, Joe now operates south UK holding a 2 night residency in London's West End. ""Secret Sounds of Ibizia is a concept of surfacing music from big name artists around the world and UK artists of all levels that I believe has; 1. Been overlooked by a bigger exposed release 2. Unheard, unreleased or has slipped through the cracks and deserved more recognition The mix is full of energy, anticipation and saucey drops to get your feet moving. I'll let the mix do the rest of the talking. Enjoy x"""

For the entire 20th Century, you’d be hard pressed to find a better business than an American newspaper — Warren Buffett famously described them as “franchises” — and no American newspaper stood taller than the New York Times. Controlled by a single family bound by a legal oath “to maintain the editorial independence and integrity of The New York Times and to continue it as an independent newspaper, entirely fearless, free of ulterior influence and unselfishly devoted to the public welfare”, the Times served as the paper of record for generations of Americans and people around the world. But no good thing lasts forever, and the dawn of the 21st Century saw both the Times and this once-mighty industry devastated by the dual disruptive forces of the internet and the 2008 financial crisis. And yet by 2021, The Times, essentially alone of its former peers, has reemerged from the American newspaper wreckage and transformed itself into a thriving digital business with an order of magnitude more subscribers than its print heyday. Curious how it all happened? We dive into 170 years of history to find out! When you find yourself sitting in front of a big approaching demand wave... ride it!! The New York (Daily) Times was founded during the newspaper boom of the 1850s, and similarly Adolph Ochs took over the local Chattanooga paper at the start of that city’s mining boom. The NYT made huge investments in its reporting during the two World Wars as the public’s appetite for news exploded, while its rivals missed the ball worrying over preserving advertising space. Likewise NYT launched The Daily (which would become the biggest podcast in the world) immediately following Trump’s inauguration in early 2017. Arguably NYT’s biggest business mistake was missing the cable wave -- which Rupert Murdoch leveraged brilliantly to build Fox News into the most valuable news media franchise in the world. 2. Where there’s an entrepreneurial will, there’s an entrepreneurial way. Adolph Ochs bought the Chattanooga Times with $250 and sellers’ notes, and then acquired The New York Times out of bankruptcy with no personal money down and $100k of real estate debt. And turned them both into successes on a level no one (even himself at times) believed possible. 3. Recurring Acquired theme: the media business is still the second-best business of all time, behind technology. Media’s ability to generate dual revenue streams (advertising and subscription) from the same content product generates enormous leverage on investment, AND most of those costs are fixed vs. variable (especially in a digital environment). 4. This is why “content is king” has always been true in the media industry. NYT’s version of this strategy has always been to invest more in high-quality journalism than any of its peers. It was true in 1896 when Ochs took over, true during the World Wars and the Pentagon Papers, and perhaps has never been more true than today when NYT employs 1,700 journalists around the world and pays them an average of >2x the rest of the industry. 5. That said, distribution is critical as well. To build a world-class media organization you must be great at both content AND distribution. In the old media landscape, NYT built great distribution through its printing and delivery operations, as well as savvy investments like the Index which led to libraries and researchers across the country relying on the Times as the “paper of record”. However in today’s media landscape, the task of building great distribution falls on the newsroom and journalists themselves. The job is no longer finished once you hit publish -- reporters and editors must own the responsibility of getting their work in front of readers via social media and shareable story elements. Well, this was a big episode on many accounts. For one, we moved the rock that one of the Snakes was hiding under and uncovered some deep archeological alternative music history. It was great to hear Simon Jacobsen's stories of DC lore and lore of wild, studious prep school punk rock mischief. The Snakes were an anomaly in the scene and especially on Dischord. So what better episode to celebrate the month that marks the 40th year or Diischord records. We also talk to Dot Dash's dashing articulate epicurean bassist and author, Hunter Bennett. Finally, Ben Merlis chimes in on why the Snakes matter. Of course there's also many side roads in Brian and Jeff's crazy train conversations and both also share their top five releases for the year the world lost it's collective shit. See you next year, kids!

Neil Vogel is CEO of Dotdash, a series of brands across verticals like food, technology finance and others. What started as About.com has morphed into an incredibly profitable, fast-growing media company. Although Neil has poor taste in sports teams, when it comes to running this network, I have to tip my hat. In this episode, we discussed a variety of topics, but a few things jumped out to me… On ad strategy at Dotdash We all have been to that website that causes the fans on our laptops to go into overdrive. Whether it's popups, pre-rolls, interstitials… You name it, we've likely all experienced it. Dotdash bet that by reducing the number of ads on the site—2/3rds of what their competitors might have—that the sites would load faster and that would make people happier. That, in turn, would result in people engaging with the content and ads more. The other part of the strategy is focusing in on contextual advertising. An example Neil shares is if someone is coming for the site on July 2nd and looking for BBQ recipes, they know exactly what type of advertising to deliver to them. On creating great content & SEO There is no denying that Google drives a decent percentage of traffic to the various Dotdash sites, though Neil qualified that it's no more or less than most other publishers on the web. However, the way he sees it, the only real “secret” to SEO is doing exactly what Google wants: delivering the absolute best content out there. That's Google's business. And so, Dotdash invests millions in creating the absolute best content. But it's more than just that… In his mind, creating great content is fundamental to the quality of the brands they're building. https://www.amediaoperator.com/p/would-your-readers-miss-you-if-your (I wrote about this on Friday), but because of the quality of the brands built on the great content, he believes people would miss the brands if they went away. On not chasing the shiny things Some of the biggest mistakes that they made early on at Dotdash was seeing what other people were doing, knowing that it was the wrong approach, but still trying to do them anyway. The advice that Neil has for prospective operators is to stay focused on what you know works. It's easy to get distracted by the shiny things and the press other people are getting, but it's about staying focused on what works.

Welcome back, Dischord aficionados, this music both shaped and changed my life, and hopefully these audio travelouges will deepen your appreciation of the house that Ian built, plus all the great music made in the surrounding areas. This week we tackle the raging blast called Youth Brigade. On this exciting episode of The Triple Po, I talk again to my old friend and fellow podcaster Tucker Drake. We talk a bit about the upcoming American Atheists Convention coming up in Cincinnati, and then it's on to juicier fare. We talk about the awesomeness that is AOC, as well as other political topics such as the Democratic presidential field for 2020; the Electoral College; and wherever else our ramblings lead us. I thought it was a great stream of consciousness conversation regarding political topics of the day. I hope y'all agree! Music by Dot Dash, cdbaby.com/cd/dotdotdash

Nearly two years ago, About.com turned into Dotdash. Since then, they've made tweaks to their approach to platforms that have garnered over $100 million in revenue and almost 80 million uniques a month on comScore, which is twice the amount that they started out with. Dotdash, CEO Neil Vogel shared this change of approach and strategy for About.com's reinvention in a session from the Digiday Publishing Summit held in Key Biscayne, Florida.
We have samples from 3 songs this week. The first is from a pop/singer/songwriter with a BIG voice, who writes BIG powerful emotional ballads. Her name is Rachelle Rhienne. We also have a pop/punk/indie band called Dot Dash. They’ve gotten to play with some really cool bands. We also have TGC (The Green Children). They’re an electro-pop duo who has worked with legendary producer Paul Oakenfold.

How do you give new life to an old company? Bring new vision to a place that lost its own? And how do you bring your team -- and your new audience! -- along for the change? Neil Vogel, CEO of Dotdash (formerly About.com), brings a much-needed dose of optimism on why digital media companies that are making high-quality content are doing OK—and have a pretty bright future.
Since 2014, Neil Vogel has led the transition of About.com into Dotdash. Under his stewardship, the IAC-owned company has gone from an all-things-to-all-people approach to a publisher of discrete, focused verticals including Verywell (health), the Spruce (home), Lifewire (tech), the Balance (personal finance), Tripsavvy (travel) and Thought Co. (life hacking). We discuss the challenges and opportunities of that transformation – but first he talks about the life-changing experience, early in his career, when he hit the road for a year with the sole intent of getting bored. We also dig into his time at the Webby Awards, which he had a hand in founding and making the cultural touchstone it is today.
According to Heraclitus, the only thing that remains constant is change. The internet itself has evolved exponentially over a relatively short amount of time. Few relics from the early days of the web remain, and those that have, have been forced to change. Adam McClean is the SVP of Product at Dotdash. Dotdash was once About.com. The very same About.com that has been around for 21 years. Adam and his team were increasingly aware that the landscape around them was changing, and that they needed to evolve. They made the switch to a new brand, Dotdash, and a new process, to keep up with technological and market changes. Dan Mall, who runs SuperFriendly out of Philadelphia, joins the podcast to share his views on the evolution of dotDash’s process in support of their new brand. Dan will also be teaching one of the daylong workshops at UI22 this November 13-15 in Boston, MA. He’ll show how to develop workflows for the multi-device world we live in.
